An increase in the energy density on the cell level while maintaining a high power density can be realized by combining thick-film electrodes and the 3D battery concept. The effect of laser structuring using different pattern types on the electrochemical performance was studied. For this purpose, LiNi0.6Mn0.2Co0.2O2 (NMC 622) thick-film cathodes were prepared with a PVDF binder and were afterward structured using ultrafast laser ablation. Eight different pattern types were realized, which are lines, grids, holes, hexagonal structures, and their respective combinations. In addition, the mass loss caused by laser ablation was kept the same regardless of the pattern type. The laser-structured electrodes were assembled in coin cells and subsequently electrochemically characterized. It was found that when discharging the cells for durations of less than 2 h, a significant, positive impact of laser patterning on the electrochemical cell performance was observed. For example, when discharging was performed for one hour, cells containing laser-patterned electrodes with different structure types exhibited a specific capacity increase of up to 70 mAh/g in contrast to the reference ones. Although cells with a hole-patterned electrode exhibited a minimum capacity increase in the rate capability analysis, the combination of holes with lines, grids, or hexagons led to further capacity increases. In addition, long-term cycle analyses demonstrated the benefits of laser patterning on the cell lifetime, while cyclic voltammetry highlighted an increase in the Li-ion diffusion kinetics in cells containing hexagonal-patterned electrodes.

Mountain rivers provide habitat or refuges and create migration corridors for diverse aquatic and riparian organisms. River microhabitat heterogeneity (RMH), which plays a key role in ecological restoration, is sensitive to external disturbances in mountain rivers. However, the effects of RMH, induced by hydro-geomorphological processes, on local macroinvertebrates have not been quantitatively studied. To explore the ecological significance of RMH, we proposed a new RMH index (RMHI) for quantitative evaluation of RMH and selected five debris flow-dominated mountain rivers (DMR) and five equilibrium sediment transport mountain rivers (EMR) as contrasting examples based on the richness of sediment supply. We found that RMH supported macroinvertebrate α-diversity and functional richness in both DMR and EMR, but debris flow weakened the ecological role of RMH in DMR. The proposed RMHI should be ≥ 8.0 to maintain the ecological health of mountain rivers. Besides, the macroinvertebrate communities were mainly driven by species turnover in EMR, while species turnover and nestedness were balanced in DMR. And macroinvertebrate community shift from an R-strategy to a K-strategy due to deposition and erosion. According to the research results, we put forward the following suggestions. At the watershed scale, ecological conservation of mountain rivers requires a regional approach focusing on multiple sites in EMR. Priority should be given to protect the river with high macroinvertebrate species richness and close attention needs to be paid to multiple sites of DMR. At the river scale, we can protect the biodiversity of mountain rivers by maintain RMHI above its threshold.

Objective To investigate the incidence and possible risk factors of FMH among pregnant women in Changsha. Methods A total of pregnant women (6~42 weeks of gestation) who underwent prenatal examinations in our hospital from June 2019 to December 2020 were enrolled as subjects. In this study, the modified Kleihauer-Betke (K-B) test was used for preliminary screening and flow cytometry was applied to confirme initially positive samples to evaluate the incidence of FMH and estimate fetal blood loss. The logistic regression analysis was used to study the risk factors of FMH. Results The incidence of FMH in pregnant women was 10.45% (183/1 752), the average volume of fetal blood loss was (2.50±3.87)mL, and 0.11% (2/1 752) of the fetal losed blood > 30 mL. Univariate analysis showed that age, twin pregnancy, pregnancy complicated with uterine fibroids, in vitro fertilization, fetal growth restriction, preeclampsia, and number of pregnancies may be risk factors for FMH. For the first time, the laser structuring of large-footprint electrodes with a loading of 4 mAh cm−2 has been validated in a relevant environment, including subsequent multi-layer stack cell assembly and electrochemical characterization of the resulting high-capacity lithium-ion pouch cell prototypes, i.e., a technological readiness level of 6 has been achieved for the 3D battery concept. The structuring was performed using a high-power ultrashort-pulsed laser, resulting in well-defined line structures in electrodes without damaging the current collector, and without melting or altering the battery active materials. For cells containing structured electrodes, higher charge and discharge capacities were measured for C-rates >1C compared to reference cells based on unstructured electrodes. In addition, cells with structured electrodes showed a three-fold increase in cycle lifetime at a C-rate of 1C compared to those with reference electrodes.

Abstract Sugarcane production supports the livelihoods of millions of small‐scale farmers in developing countries, and the bioenergy needs of millions of consumers. Yet, future sugarcane yields remain uncertain due to differences in climate projections, and because the sensitivity of sugarcane ecophysiology to individual climate drivers (i.e. temperature, precipitation, shortwave radiation, VPD and CO2) and their interactions is largely unresolved. Here we ask: how sensitive is sugarcane yield to future climate change, including climate extremes, and what are its key climate drivers? We combine the Soil‐Plant‐Atmosphere model with detailed time‐series measurements from experimental plots in Guangxi, China, and São Paulo State, Brazil. We first calibrated and validated modelled carbon and water cycling against field flux and biometric data. Second, we simulated sugarcane growth under the historical climate (1980–2018), and six future climate projections (2015–2100). We computed the ‘yield‐effect’ of each climate driver by generating synthetic climate forcings in which the driver time series was alternated to that of the historical median. In Guangxi, median yield and yield lows (i.e. lower decile) were relatively insensitive to forecast climate change. In São Paulo, median yield and yield lows decreased under all future climates projections (x¯ = −4% and −12% respectively). At Guangxi, where moisture stress was low, radiation was the principal driver of yield variability (yield‐effect x¯ = −1.2%). Conversely, high moisture stress at São Paulo raised yield sensitivity to temperature (yield‐effect x¯ = −7.9%). In contrast, a number of other modelling studies report a positive effect of increased temperatures on sugarcane yield. We ascribe the disparity between model predictions to the representation of key phenological processes, including the link between leaf ageing and thermal time, and the role of ageing in driving leaf senescence. We highlight climate sensitivity of phenological processes as a key focus for future research efforts.

Direct Laser Interference Patterning (DLIP) is used to texture current collector foils in a roll-to-roll process using a high-power picosecond pulsed laser system operating at either fundamental wavelength of 1064 nm or 2nd harmonic of 532 nm. The raw beam having a diameter of 3 mm @ 1/ e ^2 is shaped into an elongated top-hat intensity profile using a diffractive so-called FBS®-L element and cylindrical telescopes. The shaped beam is split into its diffraction orders, where the two first orders are parallelized and guided into a galvanometer scanner. The deflected beams inside the scan head are recombined with an F-theta objective on the working position generating the interference pattern. The DLIP spot has a line-like interference pattern with about 15 μ m spatial period. Laser fluences of up to 8 J cm ^−2 were achieved using a maximum pulse energy of 0.6 mJ. Furthermore, an in-house built roll-to-roll machine was developed. Using this setup, aluminum and copper foil of 20 μ m and 9 μ m thickness, respectively, could be processed. Subsequently to current collector structuring coating of composite electrode material took place. In case of lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide (NMC 622) cathode deposited onto textured aluminum current collector, an increased specific discharge capacity could be achieved at a C -rate of 1 °C. For the silicon/graphite anode material deposited onto textured copper current collector, an improved rate capability at all C -rates between C /10 and 5 °C was achieved. The rate capability was increased up to 100% compared to reference material. At C -rates between C /2 and 2 °C, the specific discharge capacity was increased to 200 mAh g ^−1 , while the reference electrodes with untextured current collector foils provided a specific discharge capacity of 100 mAh g ^−1 , showing the potential of the DLIP technology for cost-effective production of battery cells with increased cycle lifetime.

The selection of suitable indicators is the key to the development of multi-metric bioassessment. Here, we examined how taxonomic and functional structures of macroinvertebrate communities responded to the environmental gradients in ten mountainous streams in the Weihe River and Hanjiang River basins, two subtropical biodiversity hotspots in central China. Our main objectives were: 1) to examine whether trait-based metrics performed better than taxonomic compositions in differentiating environmental gradients; 2) to test whether indicators (species and traits) were more efficient than entire communities in discriminating three site groups subjected to different levels of human disturbances. Our results showed that both taxonomic and functional trait compositions, including species- and trait-based indicators, were all sensitive to environmental disturbance. Particularly, the trait-based variables responded more sensitive to human disturbances. Indicator assemblages can be effective surrogates of entire communities in response to environmental changes. Traits- and indicators-based metrics should be considered as useful supplements in the existent bio-monitoring schemes in China. We argued that the combination of taxonomic and functional indicators should be implemented in bioassessment, as they reflect different aspects of environmental changes and anthropogenic disturbances.

The incoming water area of the Central Line Project of the South-to-North Water Diversion comprises the upper reaches of the Han River in China. Bacterioplankton are important members of river ecosystems. However, the mechanisms (deterministic or stochastic processes) regulating planktonic bacterial community structure in the upper Han River are not well understood. Herein, we documented the spatiotemporal patterns, assembly processes, and co-occurrence relationships of the planktonic bacterial communities in the Han River and its tributaries. Seasonal variations in bacterioplankton communities were clearly observed and were more obvious than spatial differences. The planktonic bacterial community showed a significant distance (dendritic distance) decay pattern during the two sampling periods, and the distance decay pattern was stronger in spring than in the other season. Network analysis showed that bacterial community networks displayed non-random co-occurrence patterns, and significant differences in the topological properties of empirical and random networks (average clustering coefficient, average path length, and average degree) were found. Compared to those of the tributaries, the network of the mainstem had the lowest modularity; this may be caused by the significant difference in biodiversity between the mainstem and the tributaries. Redundancy analysis revealed that pH exhibited significant effects on the planktonic bacterial community in both seasons. However, variation partitioning analysis showed that spatial factors (stochastic processes) contributed more to explaining community assembly than environmental factors during the two seasons. In addition, the neutral community model can also explain a large part of the community variation observed during the autumn and spring (R2 = 0.817 and 0.808, respectively). This study shows that seasonal variation in the bacterial community is greatly influenced by seasonal environmental variation. However, stochastic processes dominantly affect the structure of the bacterioplankton community within seasons. In order to effectively manage and protect microbial diversity, managers consider not only local species diversity, but also the effect of regional species dispersal.

There is a growing recognition that examining patterns of ecological communities and their underlying determinants is not only feasible based on taxonomic data, but also functional and phylogenetic approaches. This is because these additional facets can enhance the understanding of the relative contribution of multiple processes in shaping biodiversity. However, few studies have focused on multifaceted beta diversities in lotic macroinvertebrates, especially when considering driving factors operating at multiple spatial scales. Here, we examined the spatial patterns of multi-faceted (i.e., taxonomic, functional and phylogenetic) beta diversity and their components (i.e., turnover and nestedness) of macroinvertebrates in 50 sites in 10 streams situated in the north and south slope of the Qinling Mountains, the geographical dividing line of Northern and Southern China. We found that the streams draining the north slope showed significantly lower values of beta diversity based on all three facets than the streams draining the south slope. Such north-to-south increases of beta diversity were caused by the distinct climatic and local environmental conditions between the sides of the mountain range. Moreover, spatial variables generally played the most important role in structuring all facets and components of beta diversity, followed by local environmental and climatic variables, whereas catchment variables were less important. Despite the similar results of relative contribution of explanatory variables on each beta diversity facet, the details of community-environment relationships (e.g., important explanatory variables and explanatory power) were distinct among different diversity facets and their components. In conclusion, measuring functional and phylogenetic beta diversity provides complementary information to traditional taxonomic approach. Therefore, an integrative approach embracing multiple facets of diversity can better reveal the mechanisms shaping biodiversity, which is essential in assessing and valuing aquatic ecosystems for biodiversity management and conservation.

The Weihe River is the largest tributary of the typically sediment-laden Yellow River in China. Assuming that high sediment concentrations may increase the turbidity of water bodies, and therefore affect riverine ecosystem, in which the bacterioplankton are crucial components and serve as important indicators of environmental and ecological status through their structure and response to the environment change, it is essential to deep understanding the bacterioplankton structure and influencing factors in turbid and clear river ecosystems. Here, high-throughput sequencing was used to analyze the differences in bacterioplankton structure and major determinants in the typically turbid Weihe River and its clear tributaries from the northern foot of the Qinling Mountains from October to November 2017 and April to May 2018. The results demonstrated that bacterioplankton communities shared similar dominant subcommunities in the Weihe River mainstem and its tributaries, mainly consisting of Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes phyla and Flavobacterium and Acinetobacter genera. The Faith phylogenetic diversity (PD) index was significantly higher in the turbid mainstem than in the tributaries and was related to turbidity (Turb). Variation partitioning analysis (VPA) showed that geographical distance exhibited notable influences on the community composition in the mainstem; however, the communities in the tributaries had a much stronger response to local environmental factors. Bacteria exhibited a significant distance-decay relationship in the mainstem, whereas geographical distance was not correlated with community dissimilarities in the tributaries. Chlorophyll a emerged as the major determinant of the bacterioplankton structure in the turbid Weihe River, indicating the importance of phytoplankton-bacterioplankton relationships in the turbid river system. These results provide important insights into future research on microbial ecology, environmental monitoring and classified management in diverse river systems.

The electrochemical performance of lithium-ion batteries is directly influenced by type of active material as well as its morphology. In order to evaluate the impact of particle morphology in thick-film electrodes, Li(Ni0.6Mn0.2Co0.2)O2 (NMC 622) cathodes with bilayer structure consisting of two different particle sizes were manufactured and electrochemically characterized in coin cells design. The hierarchical thick-film electrodes were generated by multiple casting using NMC 622 (TA) with small particle size of 6.7 µm and NMC 622 (BA) with large particle size of 12.8 µm. Besides, reference electrodes with one type of active material as well as with two type of materials established during mixing process (BT) were manufactured. The total film thickness of all hierarchical composite electrodes were kept constant at 150 µm, while the thicknesses of TA and BA were set at 1:2, 1:1, and 2:1. Meanwhile, three kinds of thin-film cathodes with 70 µm were applied to represent the state-of-the-art approach. Subsequently, ultrafast laser ablation was applied to generate groove structures inside the electrodes. The results demonstrate that cells with thin-film or thick-film cathode only containing TA, cells with bilayer electrode containing TBA 1:2, and cells with laser-structured electrodes show higher capacity at C/2 to 5C, respectively.

Lithium-ion batteries have led the revolution in portable electronic devices and electrical vehicles due to their high gravimetric energy density. In particular, layered cathode material Li(Ni0.6Mn0.2Co0.2)O2 (NMC 622) can deliver high specific capacities of about 180 mAh/g. However, traditional cathode manufacturing involves high processing costs and environmental issues due to the use of organic binder polyvinylidenfluoride (PVDF) and highly toxic solvent N-methyl-pyrrolidone (NMP). In order to overcome these drawbacks, aqueous processing of thick-film NMC 622 cathodes was studied using carboxymethyl cellulose and fluorine acrylic hybrid latex as binders. Acetic acid was added during the mixing process to obtain slurries with pH values varying from 7.4 to 12.1. The electrode films could be produced with high homogeneity using slurries with pH values smaller than 10. Cyclic voltammetry measurements showed that the addition of acetic acid did not affect the redox reaction of active material during charging and discharging. Rate capability tests revealed that the specific capacities with higher slurry pH values were increased at C-rates above C/5. Cells with laser structured thick-film electrodes showed an increase in capacity by 40 mAh/g in comparison to cells with unstructured electrodes.

In the past few decades, different data assimilation methods have been proposed to estimate soil parameters. It is not clear whether a straightforward sampling approach is sufficient or whether a linear filter or even an advanced nonlinear filter is needed to interpret the potential information carried by different data types (e.g., pressure head and water content data from multiple depths, easily available surface soil moisture data, and groundwater level data). In this study, three classical data assimilation methods, i.e., the ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF), the ensemble randomized maximum likelihood filter (EnRML), and the Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC), were investigated numerically in terms of the utility to cope with three different types of observations. Results show that, compared with the EnKF approach, EnRML is a superior method to extract the parameter information from observations. The MCMC approach performs well in homogeneous soil but not in heterogeneous soil. Regardless of the data assimilation methods and the soil heterogeneity, point-scale soil water pressure head data are the most valuable in terms of soil parameter estimation, followed by groundwater level data, which require a nonlinear filter to interpret. A smaller observation error for groundwater level data leads to obviously improved parameter estimates by using EnRML with a slight improvement by using EnKF. The stable performance of the EnKF method relies more heavily on a relatively large number of ensembles than the EnRML method, whereas only a few ensemble members are needed for EnRML in a homogeneous soil column.

Lithium-ion batteries have become the most promising energy storage devices in recent years. However, the simultaneous increase of energy density and power density is still a huge challenge. Ultrafast laser structuring of electrodes is feasible to increase power density of lithium-ion batteries by improving the lithium-ion diffusion kinetics. The influences of laser processing pattern and film thickness on the rate capability and energy density were investigated using Li(Ni0.6Mn0.2Co0.2)O2 (NMC 622) as cathode material. NMC 622 electrodes with thicknesses from 91 µm to 250 µm were prepared, while line patterns with pitch distances varying from 200 µm to 600 µm were applied. The NMC 622 cathodes were assembled opposing lithium using coin cell design. Cells with structured, 91 µm thick film cathodes showed lesser capacity losses with C-rates 3C compared to cells with unstructured cathode. Cells with 250 µm thick film cathode showed higher discharge capacity with low C-rates of up to C/5, and the structured cathodes showed higher discharge capacity, with C-rates of up to 1C. However, the discharge capacity deteriorated with higher C-rate. An appropriate choice of laser generated patterns and electrode thickness depends on the requested battery application scenario; i.e., charge/discharge rate and specific/volumetric energy density.

From the perspective of big data such as Baidu heat map and G1S kernel density analysis, this paper analyzed the gathering situation of residents of Dashiyuan at different times and the use of public service facilities, as well as problems existing in the old community of Dashiyuan in Nanchang City, and put forward targeted recommendations.
