From the alpine region of India, a hitherto undocumented lichenicolous species of Didymocyrtis colonizing the thallus and soredia of Pertusaria species thriving on rocky substrates is meticulously described as a novel taxon (D. pertusariae), from the Indian subcontinent, and is compared with other lichenicolous Didymocyrtis species. A key to all known Didymocyrtis species known so far is also provided.

Lichens were investigated in Brazil in a small area along the Roosevelt River in Amazonas; 25 species are first reports for Brazil, and 190 additional species are first records for Amazonas state. During lichenicolous fungal studies in India, lichen genus Ochrolechia was found infected with a black lirellate fungus. Critical microscopical examination of the fungus revealed that it is a new species of Labrocarpon, which differs from L. canariense in having narrow exciple (15.0–20.0 µm vs 20.0–50.0 µm thick), 4-spored asci, 1-septate to submuriform, constricted ascospores with larger l/w value [(2.5–)2.9–3.4–3.9(–4.5) vs (1.9–)2.1–2.5(–2.8)], habitat preference (corticolous vs saxicolous) and host selection (Ochrolechia vs Pertusaria). Sphinctrina pertusa Falswal A. is described as a new species of lichenicolous fungus from India. It is characterised by eight non-septate, broadly ellipsoidal, uniseriate, ascospores with olive green tint and irregular ridge like ornamentations. This fungus is growing on known lichen host Pertusaria but differs from five closely related species i.e., S. anglica, S. leucopoda, S. tubaeformis, S. turbinata, S. paramerae with different taxonomic characters. Didymocyrtis xanthomendozae is reported as new to the USA. Arthonia peltigerina and Pertusaria oculata are reported as new to the contiguous 48 states of the USA. Arthonia clemens, Diplolaeviopsis symmictae and Lichenoconium xanthoriae are reported as new to northwestern North America and Epicladonia simplex as new to the western USA. The first typification of Lepra Scop. by Pertusaria discoidea (Pers.) Malme (= Lepra albescens (Hudson) Hafellner), made in the Paris Code (1956), is shown to be correct after studies of the original material in the Micheli Herbarium in FI. The crustose lichen genus Pertusaria comprises over ca. 800 species worldwide. In total, 20 Pertusaria species were localized to the Mt. Sorak and Jeju-do in Korea. To date, information regarding the distribution of Pertusaria species in the South Korean peninsula is scarce. In this study, we collected Pertusaria species across South Korea and identified them based on morphological, chemical, and molecular characteristics. Of the 387 samples collected, we identified 24 taxa and 1 variety, of which 17 were previously recorded, and 6 taxa were newly found in South Korea (P. leioplaca, P. leucosora var. violascens, P. texana, P. thiospoda, P. thwaitesii, and P. xanthodes), 2 known species were transferred to Varicellaria (Varicellaria lactea and V. velata), one species was transferred to Variolaria as a new record (Variolaria multipunctoides) and one was a new species (P. jogyeensis J. S. Park & J.-S. Hur, sp. nov.). Characteristics of the newly discovered species, P. jogyeensis, are as follows: smooth to bumpy thallus, scattered to crowded poriform apothecia, blackish ostioles, definitely sunken, thin yellowish green rims around ostioles, 8-spored ascus, and the presence of perlatolic acid and thiophaninic acid (chlorinated xanthone). Phylogenetic studies on P. jogyeensis based on the mitochondrial small subunit sequence revealed proximity to P. flavicans and P. texana, and supported its classification as a new species within the genus Pertusaria. The first account of the lichen genus Pertusaria (Pertusariaceae) on the island of Rarotonga (Cook Islands) is given. The lichenicolous species of genus Melaspilea has been studied. As a result, a new species Melaspilea amarkantakensis has been described and M. insitiva has been lectotypified. The new species grows on the thallus and ascomata of Pertusaria species in 'sal' forests of central India and is characterized by relatively small, blackish ascomata, I- and K/I+ pale blue hymenium, 4-spored, shorter, 25.4-33.2 × 14.3-20.2 μm asci and 1-septate, (12.1-)13.3-16.0(-17.5) × (5.0-)6.1-7.6(-8.9) μm ascospores lacking perispore. The new obligately lichenicolous fungus, Melaspilea tucumana Flakus, Etayo & Kukwa, inhabiting thalli of saxicolous Pertusaria s. lat. is described from Tucumano-Boliviano vegetation in Bolivia. The species is characterized by the gall formation and superficial, lirelliform to branched, aggregated apothecioid ascomata with widely exposed discs. The ascomata of M. tucumana are initially perithecioid and immersed in the host thallus, but become superficial and apothecioid when mature, and thus resemble the genus Buelliella. The new species, Sphinctrina paramerae, is proposed. Characteristics of ascospores (size, morphology and ornamentation), apothecia (morphology, size and chemical reactions) and ecological features revealed significant differences between S. paramerae and the currently known species of Sphinctrina with non-septate ascospores. The new species grows on Pertusaria paramerae, epiphytic on the bark of Juniperus thurifera, which occurs on well-exposed areas of parameras in the Iberian high plateau and other montane Mediterranean areas. The lichen-forming genus Pertusaria under its current circumscription is polyphyletic and its phylogenetic ailiations are uncertain. Here we study the species of the genera Pertusaria and Varicellaria which contain lecanoric acid as major constituent, have disciform apothecia, strongly amyloid asci, non-amyloid hymenial gel, 1-2-spored asci, and 1- or 2-celled ascospores with thick, 1-layered walls. We infer phylogenetic relationships using maximum likelihood and Bayesian analyses based on four molecular loci (mtSSU, nuLSU rDNA, and the protein-coding, nuclear RPB1 and MCM7 genes). Our results show that the lecanoric acid-containing species form a well-supported, monophyletic group, which is only distantly related to Pertusaria s.str. he phylogenetic position of this clade is unclear, but placement in Pertusaria s.str. is rejected using alternative hypothesis testing. he circumscription of the genus Varicellaria is enlarged to also include species with non-septate ascospores. Based on field trips between 1995-2007, rare and noteworthy lichens from the Altai Mountains in southern Siberia are described. Bacidia zerovii Oxner is recognized as a synonym of Scoliciosporum chiorococcum (Graewe ex Stenh.) Vézda. Lecidea brenneri H. Magn. is lectotypified and synonymized with Lecania cyrtellina (Nyl.) Sandst. The new combination Puttea exsequens (Nyl.) Prmtzen & Davydov is introduced for Lecidea exsequens Nyl. and is the oldest validly published name for Lecidea gibberosa sensu Th. Fr. non Ach. Of the 33 species reported here, five species Lecania croatica, Lecanora pseudosarcopidoides, Lecidea, L. sanguineoatra, Puttea exsequens and Rim ularia fuscosora are new for Asia and Russia, Buellia arborea is new to Asia, Lecanorafarinaria is new to Russia, Caloplaca herbidella, C. sorocarpa, Felihanera subtilis, Lecidea pullata, and Pertusaria coccodes are new to Siberia. This paper presents a study on a chemical variation of Pertusaria flavida in Poland. Six chemotypes were determined in the studied material, of which chemotypes IV, V and VI were never reported before. All of them produce thiophaninic acid as the diagnostic metabolite for the species and this is the only major substance in chemotype I. Chemotype II contains in addition also 2'-O-methylperlatolic acid (± confluentic acid), whereas chemotype III stictic acid complex (± minor or trace amounts of norstictic acid). Chemotype IV is characterized by the presence of 2'-O-methylperlatolic acid and stictic acid complex (± norstictic acid in minor to trace amounts). Chemotype V produce norstictic acid as a major additional substance and chemotype VI contains 2'-O-methylperlatolic acid together with norstictic acid. This paper lists 80 lichen taxa recorded for Risnjak National Park. Among the listed species, Candelariella reflexa, Chaenotheca brunneola, Placynthiella icmalea, Usnea diplotypus and Usnea subfloridana have been already first reported for Croatia. The field survey was carried out at 14 collection sites in the periods 1997-1998 and 2001-2002. Floristic composition, life form spectrum and substrate preferences are described. The most numerous genera are Cladonia, Pertusaria, Lecanora and Peltigera. Lichens growth on 16 various substrates, among which the deciduous trees, Acer pseudoplatanus and Fagus sylvatica dominate. Abstract: A focused and rapid microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) process was carried out and optimized for secondary metabolites from crustose lichens using Taguchi experimental design and quantitative analysis on TLC by a Camag® spectrophotodensitometer. The procedure was improved by quantitative determination of norstictic acid (NA), a common depsidone isolated from Pertusaria pseudocorallina (Sw.) Arn. Various experimental parameters that can potentially affect the NA extraction yields including extraction time, irradiation power, volume and the percentage of tetrahydrofuran (THF) were optimized. Results suggest that THF percentage and solvent volume were statistically the most significant factors. The optimal conditions were determined as follows: THF level of 100%, solvent volume of 15mL, microwave power of 100W and extraction time of 7min. Compared to the reflux method, MAE showed a drastic reduction of extraction time (7min vs. 3h) and solvent consumption (15mL vs. 30mL). The NA in total yield was 90% using the two methods. The optimal conditions were applied to other crustose lichens, Aspicilia radiosa, Diploicia canescens and Ochrolechia parella for the extraction of NA, diploicine (DP) and variolaric acid (VA), with 83%, 90% and 95% of recovery, respectively. The new species Miriquidica effigurata, M. squamulosa and Pertusaria stellata are described from the southern subpolar region from collections made by Henry Imshaug and co-workers in the early 1970s. All three species occur on Campbell Island, New Zealand, with M. effigurata and P. stellata also occurring on the Auckland Islands, New Zealand, and P. stellata also being reported from Isla Desolación in southern Chile. Miriquidica effigurata and M. squamulosa are similar to M. complanata but have apothecia with a dark (K+ purple-red) lower hypothecium and thalli containing confluentic acid and norstictic acid respectively. Pertusaria stellata is similar to P. macloviana, but has shorter ascospores and a smoother, generally paler thallus lacking papillate isidia. The article reports on the fieldwork in Siberia and Alaska concerning the Pertusaria species. This species has been identified as P. christae and has been described from a few localities in the Austrian Alps. Its distinction from P. saximontana is said to be unclear. The study interpreted the two chemotypes as chemical variations within one species.

Two new Pertusaria species with brown ascospores are described from southern California and Baja California, Mexico. The paper presents the results of lichenological investigations during the 16th Symposium of Mycologists and Lichenologists of Baltic States. Fifty three species were recorded; 27 of them are new to Latvia. The new species, Pertusaria huanicola Messuti & A. W. Archer (Pertusariaceae, Ascomycota), is described. It is distinguished from Pertusaria phlyctaenula Nyl., P. subambigens Dibben and P. suboculata Brodo & Dibben by the chemistry and the number of ascospores per ascus. A phylogenetic study using large subunit ribosomal DNA sequence data of several species of Siphula, representing all phenotypically recognized species groups, suggests that Siphula is not monophyletic. One lineage, including the core group related to S. ceratites and the S. decumbens group, is placed with members of the Icmadophilaceae, whereas a second distinct lineage, comprising S. complanata, S. fragilis and their relatives, has evolved within the Goccotrernataceae. To accomomodate these species, the new genus Parasiphula is described as new to science. Parasiphula consists of species restricted to cool to cold latitudes of the Southern Hemisphere. Abstract: Lichenized fungi synthesize a great variety of secondary metabolites. These are typically crystalline compounds, which are deposited extracellularly on the fungal hyphae. While we know a lot about the chemical properties and structures of these substances, we have very little information on the molecular background of their biosynthesis. In the current study we analyze the diversity of non-reducing polyketide synthase (PKS) genes in members of the lichenized Pertusariales. This order primarily contains fully oxidized secondary metabolites from different substance classes, and is chemically and phylogenetically well studied. Using a degenerate primer approach with subsequent cloning we detected up to five non-reducing PKS sequences in a single PCR product. Eighty-five new KS sequence fragments were obtained for this study. Analysis of the 157 currently available fungal KS sequence fragments in a Bayesian phylogenetic framework revealed 18 highly supported clades that included only lichenized taxa, only non-lichenized taxa, or both. Some Pertusarialean groupings of PKS sequences corresponded partly to phylogenetic groupings based on ribosomal DNA. This is reasonable, because a correlation between well-supported phylogenetic lineages and the occurrence of secondary metabolites in the Pertusariales has been observed before. However, no clear linkage was found between the PKS genes analyzed and the ability to produce a particular secondary substance. Several PKS clades did not reveal obvious patterns of secondary compound distribution or phylogenetic association. Compared with earlier phylogenetic analyses of KS sequences the increased sampling in the current study allowed us to detect many new groupings within the fungal non-reducing PKSs. Eight species of the lichen genus Pertusaria (Pertusariaceae) are reported from the Juan Fernandez Archipelago (Chile). Pertusaria fernandeziana is described as a new species and two species, Pertusaria phlyctaenula Nyl. and Pertusaria dehiscens Müll. Arg., are recorded for the first time from the archipelago. Range extensions of the known distribution within the archipelago are reported for Pertusaria hadrocarpa Zahlbr., Pertusaria melanospora Nyl., Pertusaria pachythallina (Räsänen) Messuti, Pertusaria papillulata Nyl., and Pertusaria velata (Turner) Nyl. A new corticolous species belonging to the lichen family Pertusariaceae, Pertusaria grassiae Messuti & A.W. Archer, is described from Tucumán Province, Argentina. It is characterized by disciform apothecia covered by a white to greyish white pruina, single-spored asci, ellipsoid and double-walled ascospores and the presence of atranorin. The Opegrapha species with 3-septate ascospores growing on Pertusaria and Ochrolechia are revised. Two species are recognized: Opegrapha anomea (of which O. pertusariae, O. quaternella, O. wetmorei and possibly Leciographa weissii are considered to be synonyms), and O. blakii Ertz & Diederich sp. nov. described from a sterile lichen with an Ochrolechia-like thallus, known from Ecuador and Venezuela. Abstract: The potential feedback by intracellular nitrogen pools on maximum N uptake (NH[sup +, sub 4]) rate were determined for Gracilaria tenuistipitata var. liui and Ulva pertusa. The results of correlation matrix analyzing showed that the surge uptake of ammonium seemed related to rapid changes in small intracellular pools of inorganic nitrogen or small peptide and amino acids rather than to changes in TN content of the macroalgae. The assimilation rates of nitrogen of U. pertusa and G. tenuistipitata increased slowly during N starvation and were mainly regulated by amino acids and some incorporation of amino acids into macromolecules. From ecological point of view, the fast-growing and uptaking nutrient U. pertusa is more suitable to improve water quality in integrated shrimp culture ponds in which external nutrient supplies are usually high and constant during the culture period, while G. tenuistipitata var. liui is more suitable to be polycultured in a waters with intermittence supply of nutrients. The crustose lichen genus Pertusaria comprises over ca. 800 species worldwide. In total, 20 Pertusaria species were localized to the Mt. Sorak and Jeju-do in Korea. To date, information regarding the distribution of Pertusaria species in the South Korean peninsula is scarce. In this study, we collected Pertusaria species across South Korea and identified them based on morphological, chemical, and molecular characteristics. Of the 387 samples collected, we identified 24 taxa and 1 variety, of which 17 were previously recorded, and 6 taxa were newly found in South Korea ( P. leioplaca , P. leucosora var. violascens , P. texana , P. thiospoda , P. thwaitesii , and P. xanthodes ), 2 known species were transferred to Varicellaria ( Varicellaria lactea and V. velata ), one species was transferred to Variolaria as a new record ( Variolaria multipunctoides ) and one was a new species ( P. jogyeensis J. S. Park & J.-S. Hur, sp. nov.). Characteristics of the newly discovered species, P. jogyeensis , are as follows: smooth to bumpy thallus, scattered to crowded poriform apothecia, blackish ostioles, definitely sunken, thin yellowish green rims around ostioles, 8-spored ascus, and the presence of perlatolic acid and thiophaninic acid (chlorinated xanthone). Phylogenetic studies on P. jogyeensis based on the mitochondrial small subunit sequence revealed proximity to P. flavicans and P. texana , and supported its classification as a new species within the genus Pertusaria . Additionally, we describe the chemical composition and morphology of all listed species in detail and provide an artificial key for identification.

The article focuses on the proposed conservation of the name Lichen hagenii with a conserved type lichenized Ascomycota in pant classification. It in inferred that the epithet hagenii has often been applied to a common and widespread lichenized fungus in Fennoscandia, Central Europe, and eastern North America under the name Lecanora hagenii since it was introduced. However, Lichen hagenii was based on Lichen caerulescens, which was assumed as Pertusaria species in the Pertusaria hymenea group.

A correction to an article which incorrectly stated the nomenclature and typification of Pertusaria pachythalina that was published in the previous issue is presented.
