1. Transforming Student Outcomes through Mission-Aligned Investment: The Case for a National Graduate-Funded Endowment

Abstract

This essay, shortlisted for the AHUA Dr Jonathan Nicholls Memorial Essay Prize, addresses recent policy attention on student maintenance funding in the United Kingdom. It proposes the establishment of a graduate-funded endowment in lieu of other measures such as increased parental contributions or the imposition of a graduate tax. After discussing the relationship between maintenance funding and student outcomes, the essay then envisages how voluntary graduate contributions could be pooled into a national endowment, and how this endowment might address access and participatory inequalities relating to student expenditure on housing, energy, food and care. Although presented here only as a broad idea, the essay discusses how this could be achieved through investment in, as well as the incubation of, social enterprises aligned with the endowment's purpose -- to ensure that maintenance costs do not restrict access and impair student outcomes, and to do so in a sustainable and prudential way.

2. An Exploration of the Relationship between Educational Background and the Coaching Behaviours and Practice Activities of Professional Youth Soccer Coaches

Abstract

Background and purpose: Despite the proliferation in recent years of higher education establishments offering tertiary-level study in the field of sports coaching, there is a lack of research into the impact of such courses on coaching practice. The behaviours employed and activities used by coaches during practice sessions is an area where one might expect to see such impact, indeed certain studies have tentatively noted the educational qualifications of coaches and suggested that this may play a role in the application of behaviours more aligned with player learning. The purpose of this study was therefore to compare youth soccer coaches with and without tertiary-level qualifications, examining their coaching behaviours and practice activities. Method: The participants were 10 male professional youth soccer coaches aged 24-55 with an average of 13 years coaching experience. Five of the coaches had completed undergraduate degree courses related to sport coaching. All of the coaches worked with players aged under 9 to under 18 in the youth academy of an English professional soccer club. Systematic observation of coach behaviour and practice activities was carried out using the Coach Analysis and Intervention System (Cushion et al. 2012), while follow-up interviews were used to elicit the coaches' perceptions of, and rationale for, their behaviour. Findings: The observation data showed that graduate coaches used significantly more divergent questioning than non-graduate coaches, while the interview data revealed a general trend for graduate coaches to show greater self-awareness of behaviours and changes in behaviour between practice types. Graduate coaches also provided more comprehensive rationales, for example, seeing silence as a means of facilitating player decision-making as well as for observation. In contrast to previous research, sessions featured a higher proportion of playing form than training form activities and at over 20% of session duration, the 'other' practice state was a prominent feature of contact time with players. While some coaches saw 'other' as wasted time, graduate coaches identified this as an opportunity for group discussion and social interaction. The study adds to existing data about coach behaviours and practice activities, providing evidence that education background may indeed influence coaching practice.

6. Preventing Another Pandemic: How Changing the Legal Paradigm Governing Intensive Animal Agriculture Will Reduce the Risk of Future Zoonoses.

Abstract

The public health consequences tied to our relationships with animals are significant. The COVID-19 pandemic and previous instances of zoonotic disease emergence and re-emergence have demonstrated that human relationships with animals can have a profound impact on our health. In the US, the most prevalent human-animal relationship is the one we have with the animals that we eat. This relationship is defined and facilitated by intensive animal agriculture, a practice at high risk of causing zoonotic disease emergence. This Article explores the current regulatory regime governing intensive animal agriculture and argues that it is deficient in the context of zoonotic disease. It argues that this deficiency is a result of the legal anthropocentrism that manifests in practices inherent to intensive animal agriculture and demonstrates that such an approach is unable to adequately manage the risk of future zoonoses. This Article argues for a regulatory approach that acknowledges the interdependence of humans, animals, and the environment. It proposes Wild Law as the most appropriate framework to address the risk of zoonotic disease and concludes that intensive animal agriculture would not be permitted under a Wild Law approach due to its inherent inability to operate within the context of an interdependent human-animal-environment relationship. Abstract

Over the past few decades, public concern for the interests of animals has grown. This concern is rooted in the capacity of animals to feel. Animal sentience research has made clear that many animals are sentient; they do experience pain and accordingly, human treatment towards them matters. State legislatures acknowledge this to varying degrees through the enactment of legislation that regulates and restricts human treatment of animals. This acknowledgement, however, is only implicit in most jurisdictions. This Article contends that the explicit recognition of animal sentience in animal welfare legislation would better serve to protect the interests of animals. In this respect, it advocates for animal welfare laws in all United States jurisdictions to expressly recognize animal sentience. While animal sentience is obvious to most humans, expressly acknowledging such in legislation will have important consequences, including implications for statutory interpretation of animal welfare legislation, providing animal welfare legislation with a scientific foundation, and promoting the intrinsic worth of animals. 15. Spiral Laminar Flow: a Survey of a Three-Dimensional Arterial Flow Pattern in a Group of Volunteers.

Abstract

Objective Spiral laminar flow was suggested as potentially the predominant arterial blood flow pattern many years ago. Computational fluid dynamics and flow rig testing have suggested there are advantages to spiral laminar flow. The aim of this study was to identify whether spiral laminar is the predominant flow pattern in a cohort of volunteers. Methods This study included 42 volunteers (mean age 66.8 years). Eleven arterial sites were examined, comprising bilateral examination of the common carotid artery, internal carotid artery, external carotid artery, common femoral artery, superficial femoral artery, and the infra renal aorta. The presence or absence of spiral laminar flow, the peak systolic velocity, and the rotational velocity were assessed by colour Duplex scanning. Results The incidence of spiral laminar flow ranged from 81% in the internal carotid artery to 90% in the common carotid artery and the infra renal aorta. Overall, in 58% of all right-sided arteries the rotation was clockwise and 42% anticlockwise. In all left-sided arteries these numbers were reversed. Analysis on the basis of volunteer rather than examination site showed that 41/42 (97%) had more sites with spiral laminar flow than without. Only one volunteer had more sites exhibiting non-spiral laminar flow. Conclusion Spiral laminar flow was the predominant flow pattern in the study population. This observation raises questions and suggests a need for further studies concerning the form and function of the left ventricle, the geometry of the arterial system, and the function of the arterial wall. Abstract

Abstract: Background: We sought to evaluate the role of balloon angioplasty as the primary modality in the management of vein graft stenoses. Methods: Patients who underwent infrainguinal vein graft bypass from January 2002 to December 2007 were enrolled into a surveillance program. Grafts which developed critical stenoses were identified and underwent urgent angiography with a view to angioplasty of the stenotic lesion. Lesions which were deemed unsuitable for angioplasty underwent urgent surgical repair. Results: Four hundred and eleven grafts were followed up for a median of 19 months (range: 2–61). Ninety-six grafts (22.6%) developed critical stenosis. Twelve grafts occluded prior to repair and one was not intervened upon electively. Eight grafts underwent primary surgical repair. Seventy-six grafts underwent 99 endovascular procedures. Technical success was achieved in 60 grafts (78.9%). Of the grafts in which technical success had not been achieved, eight underwent repeat angioplasty and three were surgically repaired. Twenty-four grafts underwent repeat angioplasty for re-stenosis with a technical success rate of 71%. No difference was observed in graft patency (P =0.08) or amputation rates (P =0.32) between the grafts requiring intervention to maintain patency, and grafts which did not. Smoking [OR: 2.61 (95% CI: 1.51–4.53), (P =0.006)], diabetes [OR: 2.55 (95% CI: 1.49–4.35), (P =0.006)], renal failure [OR: 1.89 (95% CI: 1.19–3.38), (P =0.040)] and recurrent stenosis [OR: 3.22 (95% CI: 1.63–4.69), (P <0.001)] were risk factors for graft occlusion. Conclusions: Balloon angioplasty of failing infrainguinal vein bypass grafts is safe and can be performed with an acceptable medium term patency rate, albeit with a significant risk of re-stenosis which can be successfully treated in most patients using repeat endovascular intervention.
