The focus of the study is the analysis and sizing of the air conditioning system on board the vehicle which operates in thermal transient for the duration of the typical mission, using “fan coil” type air conditioning devices powered by a hot or cold heat vector fluid loaded into “electro-thermal” charging station and the related ground cogeneration plant (at the BUS terminus). For winter air conditioning, it was assumed that a heat transfer fluid at a temperature of 90 ° C could be stored on board. This value allows the use of water as a heat transfer fluid without pressurizing the systems, minimizing costs and supply problems, and is compatible with the characteristics of ICE cogeneration systems. For summer air conditioning, it was assumed that ice or fluid at a temperature of -20 ° C could be loaded. Also in this case it was decided to operate with a common fluid, such as a solution of water and salt (e.g. calcium chloride CaCl2). A comparative analysis of two solutions was carried out: the first involves the standard solution with BUS air conditioning system with heat pump powered by traction batteries charged by the grid and the second one analyzes the use of a high temperature Fuel Cell in a trigenerative configuration with refrigeration unit absorption fueled by the fumes of the FC. The trigeneration plant produces 100 kW of electricity via SOFC (Solid Oxide Fuel Cell) and, through an exchanger, water at 95 ° C which is stored on board the BUS for winter heating and feeds an absorption refrigeration machine that produces fluid at a temperature of -20 ° C for summer conditioning. For the two solutions, the savings of non-renewable primary energy and the reduction of GHG emissions compared to the standard solution (recharging the electric BUS from the network with on-board air conditioning powered by the traction batteries) are calculated through a WTW analysis. Consumption and emissions of electric powertrains, potentially for consumption and zero emissions, are closely linked to the methods of production and distribution of electricity.

The growing adoption of renewable energy sources and the need for more efficient and secure energy grids are revolutionizing the energy sector. Electricity monitoring becomes an issue of utmost importance, as current traditional energy meters have several problems in terms of lack of transparency, very high operational costs, and the possibility of being easily tampered with. This paper proposes a new system for electricity production metering that leverages blockchain and IoT for decentralized and secure data recording while protecting user privacy and reducing operational costs. The architecture results in improvements over the traditional energy meter. The system also contributes to the generation of big data that is reliable, traceable, error-proof, and highly resistant to cyber attacks. The architectural project outputs are a smart energy meter, a smart contract on the Ethereum blockchain, and a decentralized application to manage the information recording. The experimental prototype outcomes confirm the use of these new technologies to improve energy metering, enhancing efficiency, transparency, and traceability, with reduced costs and increased user privacy. The real environment impacts the fuel and energy consumption of any vehicle: technology, physical and social phenomena, traffic, drivers' behaviour, and so on; many of them are difficult to quantify. The authors' methodology was used to test the real impact of vehicles in "standard" urban conditions, and many generations of hybrid powertrains are compared. One of the latest performance indexes is the percentage of time the vehicle runs with zero emissions (ZEV). For example, the hybrid vehicle tested ran up to 80% with no emissions and fuel consumption below 3 L per 100 km. A few energy performance indicators were compared between five vehicles: one battery electric vehicle (BEV), two hybrid gasoline–electric vehicles (HEVs), and two traditional vehicles (one diesel and one gasoline). Their potential to use only renewable energy is unrivalled, but today's vehicles' performances favour hybrid power trains. This paper summarises the most sustainable powertrain for urban use by comparing experimental data from on-road testing. It also evaluates the benefits of reducing emissions by forecasting the Italian car fleet of 2025 and three use cases of the evolution of car fleets, with a focus on Rome. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The term smart has been increasingly used to refer to a process of rethinking and modernization in different areas and contexts, covering the use of innovative technology solutions, sharing networks and data, and access to goods and services. That's all feasible thanks to multi-stakeholder participation at different levels, and access through the use of ICT. In the definition adopted in January 2014, the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) Committee of the European Parliament, has defined a Smart City as "a city seeking to address public issues via ICT based solutions on the basis of a multi-stakeholder, municipally based partnership". That definition is lacking of a crucial concept. It is scientifically incorrect to define "smart" any human expression in perspective without referring to sustainability. Smart means, therefore, sustainable. This work highlights the close link between art university and sustainability. In a parallel with smart grids, smart mobility, and Smart Cities, university, through the smartification of its essential components can be much more sustainable when evolved into a distance learning, networked and connected smart university pared to "traditional" fully physical university. Smart university shares physical elements, needs and moves less mass, being in one word, more efficient. As well as from the energy point of view, a sustainable future can be defined as the "Era of energy vectors" in which "an energy vector allows transfer, in space and time, a given quantity of energy, hence making it available for use distantly in time and space from the point of availability of the original source", from a knowledge point of view, smart university allows to transfer, in space and time, a given knowledge, hence making it available for use distantly in time and space from the point of availability of the original source. Since the 1980s sustainability has clearly become the challenge of the 21st century. In a process toward a sustainable society it is crucial that different stakeholders start collaboration and exchange ideas with technicians and academics. To finalize the policy decisions on important issues such as energy sustainability, collaboration between policy makers, academia and the private sector is important. This work intends to give Italian policy makers concrete advice and solutions to develop energy systems for mobility. The analysis proceeds from the context of Sustainability Science, a new science, which has emerged as one of the most important disciplines of international scientific research. Using a new approach, trans-disciplinary and integrated, this research is oriented to study and understand the complexity of the interactions between economy, society and nature. This broad approach permits proposing concrete solutions to complex problems locally and globally. We propose a scheme of definition of Sustainability Energy, defining five pillars of reference, and we redefine the energy systems for mobility in the context of Sustainability Science. In this paper, we start from the idea that we are living in a crucial passage, we are moving from the era of petroleum to the era of energy vectors. This paper presents the performance analysis of a latest-generation hybrid vehicle (Toyota Yaris 2020) with a testing campaign in real road conditions and a comparison with the previous model (Toyota Yaris 2017). The study was conducted by applying the Real Drive Truth Test protocol, developed by the research group, validated and spread to other full hybrid vehicles: Toyota Prius IV (2016) and Toyota Yaris 2017 (2017). In the case of the 2020 tests, the co-presence on board—deemed unsafe in the usual ways given the ongoing pandemic—was achieved through precise and sophisticated remote control. An on-board diagnostic computer, video transmission and recording equipment guarantee the virtual co-presence of a technical control room and a driver. Thus, several engineers can follow and monitor each vehicle via a 4G modem (installed in each vehicle), analysing data, route and driver behaviour in real-time, and therefore even in the presence of a single occupant in the car under test. The utmost attention has also been paid to adopting anti-COVID behaviours and safety standards: limited personal interactions, reduced co-presence in shared rooms (especially in the control room), vehicle sanitising between different drivers, computers and technicians and video technicians working once at a time. The comparison between the two subsequent vehicle models shows a significant improvement in the performance of the new generation Yaris, both in terms of operation in ZEV (zero-emission vehicle) mode (+15.3%) and in terms of consumption (−35.1%) and overall efficiency of the hybrid powertrain (+8.2%). Microentrepreneurs contribute to the growth of electromobility, and hence to sustainable transport, by the purchase of alternative fuel vehicles (AFV). This article attempts to identify key factors that may affect the growth of interest in AFV among microentrepreneurs. To find the key factors, data from 181 Polish microenterprises was collected and analyzed by means of the factor analysis. The results showed that in contrary to the popular opinion, it is not the price of the car that is crucial for its purchase, but the information that leads to knowledge about technical and utility values, and to legal and economic predictability. Reducing fuel consumption and global emissions in the automotive sector has been a main focus of vehicle technology development for long time. The most effective goal to achieve the overall sustainability objectives is to reduce the need for non-renewable and fossil resources. Five vehicles, two conventional ICE, two hybrid-electric, and one pure electric powertrain, are considered. Non-renewable primary energy consumption and CO2 emissions are calculated for each powertrain considered. All data—including calculated values—are based on the experimental measure of fuel consumption taken in real driving conditions. The data were recorded in an experimental campaign in Rome, Italy on urban, extra-urban streets, and highway on a total of 5400 km and 197 h of road acquisitions. The analysis shows significant reductions in non-renewable fossil fuel consumption and CO2 emissions of hybrid-electric powertrains compared to conventional ones (petrol and diesel engines). Furthermore, a supplementary and very interesting comparison analysis was made between the values of energy consumptions measured during the tests in real driving conditions and the values deriving from the NEDC and WLTP homologation cycles. Abstract: This paper reports the preliminary experimental evaluation of a four wheel motors series hybrid prototype equipped with an internal combustion engine coupled to a generator and an energy recovery system (batteries plus ultracapacitors). The paper analyses global efficiency (energy dissipated to overcome the dissipative forces on energy dissipated in fuel), autonomy in electric configuration, and the efficiency of the regenerative braking system. The tests were carried out in a test cell equipped with a chassis dynamometer. The tests were performed according to the current regulated procedures. A constant speed test was performed in order to evaluate the autonomy of the vehicle in the electric configuration. The results show that the real tank to wheels efficiency is about 30% for HOST as a series hybrid and 79% for HOST as an electric vehicle. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
