Abstract

We present the measured spin correlation coefficient C y , y for p- 3 He elastic scattering at 100 MeV at the angles θ c. m. = 46. 9 ∘ – 149. 2 ∘ in the center of mass system. The experiment was performed using a 100 MeV polarized proton beam in conjunction with the polarized 3 He target. Proton beams were injected to the target, and scattered protons were detected by using E- Δ E detectors which consisted of plastic and NaI(Tl) scintillators. The data are compared with rigorous numerical calculations based on realistic NN potentials as well as with the Δ -isobar excitation. The obtained results indicate that the C y , y expands the knowledge of the nuclear interactions with Δ -isobar or those including 3NFs that are masked in nucleon-deuteron elastic scattering. Abstract

Biosolids odour emissions can affect the ability of wastewater utilities to implement beneficial biosolids processing and reuse programs. Communities often become more sensitised and vocal about biosolids issues, once they experience odours emanating from a nearby site. Odour impacts from biosolids, including potential human health effects, have been targeted recently by many national and local newspapers, citizens' groups, and regulatory agencies, who have raised significant concerns, ranging from viable disposal methods/sites to outright bans. Many national and local regulatory agencies in the United States are considering biosolids disposal bans in their communities because of misinformation, poor science, and citizen pressure, but primarily because of odour impact concerns. The wastewater industry has a relatively poor understanding of the operations and treatment parameters that influence biosolids odour emissions. Thus, wastewater treatment plants are often unable to control the odour quality of the biosolids that are delivered into communities. A research study to demonstrate the influence of anaerobic digestion, mechanical dewatering, and storage design and operating parameters on the odour quality of the final product was performed and is the subject of this paper. Established and new sampling and analytical methods were used to measure biosolids odour emissions from 11 test sites in North America. By determining the impacts of these control variables on biosolids odour quality, design and operations of anaerobic digestion systems might be enhanced. This paper also summarises a corollary study performed as part of the WERF research study that addresses the health effects of biosolids odours.

Abstract

Background: A common and debilitating complication of low anterior resection for rectal cancer is low anterior resection syndrome (LARS). As a multifactorial entity, LARS is poorly understood and challenging to treat. Despite this, prevention strategies are commonly overlooked. Our aim was to review the pathophysiology of LARS and explore current evidence on the efficacy and feasibility of prophylactic techniques. Methods: A literature review was performed between [1st January 2000 to 1st October 2023] for studies which investigated preventative interventions for LARS. Mechanisms by which LARS develop are described, followed by a review of prophylactic strategies to prevent LARS. Medline, Cochrane, and PubMed databases were searched, 189 articles screened, 8 duplicates removed and 18 studies reviewed. Results: Colonic dysmotility, anal sphincter dysfunction and neorectal dysfunction all contribute to the development of LARS, with the complex mechanism of defecation interrupted by surgery. Transanal irrigation (TAI) and pelvic floor rehabilitation (PFR) have shown benefits in preventing LARS, but may be limited by patient compliance. Intraoperative nerve monitoring (IONM) and robotic-assisted surgery have shown some promise in surgically preventing LARS. Nerve stimulation and other novel strategies currently used in treatment of LARS have yet to be investigated in their roles prophylactically. Conclusions: To date, there is a limited evidence base for all preventative strategies including IONM, RAS, PFP and TAI. These strategies are limited by either access (IONM, RAS and PFP) or acceptability (PFP and TAI), which are both key to the success of any intervention. The results of ongoing trials will serve to assess acceptability, while technological advancement may improve access to some of the aforementioned strategies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This paper presents a finite volume-based simulation study on the effect of the fin valley's number on the thermal performance of a bus duct conductor. A numerical model that closely mimics the experimental setup was developed using ANSYS FLUENT. The experimental data were used as a benchmark and followed the IEC 61439-1/2 standards. Five fin valley numbers were considered: s1=2, s2=3, s3=4, s4=5 and s5=6. It was determined that the average surface temperature decreased as the number of fin valleys increased. From the analysis, it was observed that as the number of fin valleys increased, convection heat transfer improved as a consequence of enhanced surface Nusselt number. The best number of fin valleys was s5=6, exhibiting superior thermal performance over a lower number of fin valleys. This study is expected to provide a better understanding of the fin valley's effects on the thermal performance of a bus duct conductor's casing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This article presents a finite volume-based simulation study on the effect of fin length variation on the thermal performance of a bus duct conductor. The study was conducted by developing a numerical model using ANSYS FLUENT. IEC 60439-1 and IEC 60439-2 standards were employed as a guideline to conduct the experimental setup. It was found that increasing the fin length increases the total heat transfer rate. This is due to an increase in the surface area exposed to the fluid and a decrease in the thermal boundary layer thickness. However, it was observed that longer fin lengths contributed to greater frictional forces on the fluid that resulted in a drop in convective heat transfer coefficient. The current numerical study is expected to provide a better understanding of the effect of fin length on the thermal performance of a bus duct conductor. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Materials including two-dimensional systems have been widely investigated for potential hydrogen storage. In this work, hydrogen adsorption on planar hexagonal aluminene with boron, carbon, and nitrogen decorations was studied using density functional theory. Results showed that boron, carbon, and nitrogen atom can be chemisorped without barriers on aluminene sites: top, hollow, and bridge. Density of states (DOS) showed that these systems remained metallic and nonmagnetic except for adatoms on top site of aluminene but its ferromagnetism are passivated once hydrogen atoms are adsorbed. The p orbitals of the adatoms and aluminium atoms formed the chemical bonding as shown by the DOS and supported by the charge density difference. Potential energy barriers were found in hydrogen adsorption on all systems indicating additional energy is needed to adsorb hydrogen on all systems. Hydrogen is chemisorped on surfaces where adatoms are at the top and bridge site through its s orbital and p orbital of the adatom, while H2 is physisorped for adatoms on the hollow site. The presence of boron, carbon, and nitrogen atoms on aluminene can reduce the hydrogen capacity of pristine aluminene due to the potential energy barriers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
