Abstract Studying superdiffusive thermal transport is crucial for advanced thermal management in electronics and nanotechnology, ensuring devices run efficiently and reliably. Such study also contributes to the design of high-performance thermoelectric materials and devices, thereby improving energy efficiency. This work leads to a better understanding of fundamental physics and non-equilibrium phenomena, fostering innovations in numerous scientific and engineering fields. We are showing, from a one shot experiment, that clear deviations from classical Fourier behavior are observed in a semiconductor alloy such as InGaAs. These deviations are a signature of the competition that takes place between ballistic and diffusive heat transfers. Thermal propagation is modelled by a truncated Lévy model. This approach is used to analyze this ballistic-diffusive transition and to determine the thermal properties of InGaAs. The experimental part of this work is based on a combination of time-domain and frequency-domain thermoreflectance methods with an extended bandwidth ranging from a few kHz to 100 GHz. This unique wide-bandwidth configuration allows a clear distinction between Fourier diffusive and non-Fourier superdiffusive heat propagation in semiconductor materials. For diffusive processes, we also demonstrate our ability to simultaneously measure the thermal conductivity, heat capacity and interface thermal resistance of several materials over 3 decades of thermal conductivity.

Surging and streaming of glaciers are modulated by meltwater availability and pressure which controls mechanical coupling at their beds. Using laboratory-scale experimental modelling and palaeoglaciological mapping, we explore how subglacial drainage landsystems control meltwater drainage efficiency and ice flow velocities for terrestrial-based ice lobes resting on flat horizontal and permeable beds. Two end-members regimes, surging and streaming, appear in our experiments. The surge regime is characterised by a rapid increase of drainage efficiency through development of tunnel valleys and their tributaries, thus reducing the duration of ice flow speed-up events by lowering water pressures and increasing ice-bed coupling. Tunnel valleys connected to ice lobe margins, submarginal thrust moraines, reduced ice lobe extensions and ephemeral shear margins are the most distinctive characteristics of this regime. The stream regime is characterised by disconnected channels of smaller dimensions unable to evacuate all the meltwater: this prolonged drainage inefficiency leads to sustained high ice flow velocity and steady shear margins. Small and rectilinear meltwater channels devoid of tributaries, often disconnected from ice lobe margins, and lineation swarms are diagnostic of this regime.

Ablation waves involve solid substrate such as ice or soluble rocks. Ablation by sublimation or dissolution under turbulent winds or liquid flows may lead to the development of transverse linear bedforms (ablation waves) on volatile or soluble susbtrates. In glaciology, geomorphology, karstology and planetology, these ablation waves may provide relevant morphological markers to constrain the flows that control their formation. For that purpose, we describe a unified model, that couples mass transfers and turbulent flow dynamics and takes into account the relationship between the viscosity of the fluid and the diffusivity of the ablated material, for both sublimation and dissolution waves. From the stability analysis of the model, we derive three scaling laws that relate the wavelength, the migration velocity and the growth time of the waves to the physical characteristics (pressure, temperature, friction velocity, viscous length, ablation rate) of their environment through coefficients obtained numerically. The laws are validated on terrestrial examples and laboratory experiments of sublimation and dissolution waves. Then, these laws are plotted in specific charts for dissolution waves in liquid water, for sublimation waves in N2-rich atmospheres (e.g., Earth, Titan, Pluto) and in CO2-rich atmospheres (e.g., Mars, Venus). They are applied to rock dissolution on the walls of a limestone cave (Saint-Marcel d’Ardèche, France), to H2O ice sublimation on the North Polar Cap (Mars) and to CH4 ice sublimation in Sputnik Planitia (Pluto), to demonstrate how they can be used (1) either to derive physical conditions on planetary surfaces from observed geometric characteristics of ablation waves (2) or, conversely, to predict geometric characteristics of ablation waves from measured or inferred physical conditions on planetary surfaces. The migration of sublimation waves on regions of the Martian North Polar Cap and sublimation waves candidates on Pluto are discussed.

Abstract Practical applications of heat transport control with artificial metamaterials will heavily depend on the realization of thermal diodes/rectifiers, in which thermal conductivity depends on the heat flux direction. Whereas various macroscale implementations have been made experimentally, nanoscales realizations remain challenging and efficient rectification still requires a better fundamental understanding of heat carriers’ transport and nonlinear mechanisms. Here, we propose an experimental realization of a thermal rectifier based on two leads with asymmetric mass gradients separated by a ballistic spacer, as proposed in a recent numerical investigation, and measure its thermal properties electrically with the microbridge technique. We use a Si $$_{3}$$ 3 N $$_{4}$$ 4 nanobeam on which an asymmetric mass gradient has been engineered and demonstrate that in its current form, this structure does not allow for thermal rectification. We explain this by a combination of too weak asymmetry and non-linearities. Our experimental observations provide important information towards fabricating rigorous thermal rectifiers in the ballistic phonon transport regime, which are expected to open new possibilities for applications in thermal management and quantum thermal devices.

We report on the theoretical derivation of macroscopic thermal properties (specific heat, thermal conductivity) of an electrically insulating rod connected to two reservoirs, from the linear superposition of its mechanical mode Brownian motions. The calculation is performed for a weak thermal gradient, in the classical limit (high temperature). The development is kept basic as far as geometry and experimental conditions are concerned, enabling an almost fully analytic treatment. In the modeling, each of the modes is subject to a specific Langevin force , which enables to produce the required temperature profile along the rod. The theory is predictive: the temperature gradient (and therefore energy transport) is linked to motion amplitude cross-correlations between nearby mechanical modes. This arises because energy transport is actually mediated by mixing between the modal waves , and not by the modes themselves. This result can be tested on experiments, and shall extend the concepts underlying equipartition and fluctuation–dissipation theorems. The theory links intimately the macroscopic size of the clamping region where the mixing occurs to the microscopic lengthscale of the problem at hand: the phonon mean-free-path. This clamping region, which is key, has received recently a renewed attention in the field of nanomechanics with topical works on ‘phonon shields’ and ‘soft clamping’. We believe that our work should impact the domain of thermal transport in nanostructures, with future developments of the theory toward the quantum regime.

At low temperatures and dimensionality it has become possible to probe the quantum limits of heat transport. Tavakoli et al. show that heat transport through a one-dimensional device can be dominated by non-ideal transmission instead of reaching the regime of thermal conductance quantization.

To detect thermodynamic signatures of quantum fluctuations for quantum phase transitions is challenging. Here, Poranet al. report a significant increase in the specific heat when the thickness of granular Pb films approaches a superconductor-insulator transition.

Abstract  We report on the dynamic measurements of thermal properties of nanosystems at very low temperatures. These techniques are based on the modulation of the temperature and hence leads to highly sensitive measurements. We will discuss the intrinsic limitations of these methods when the thermal properties of nano-objects are studied at very low temperatures, much below 1 K. Firstly, we will present thermal conductance measurements using the 3ω method. This technique is limited at low temperatures due to the significant increase of the mean free path. Secondly, heat capacity measurements using ac calorimetry are outlined, and again restrictions occur due to the continuous temperature gradient inherent to that technique. Because it is located both on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and on a mantle plume, Iceland is a region of intense tectonics and volcanism. During the last glaciation, the island was covered by an ice sheet approximately 1000 m thick. A reconstruction of the ice flow lines, based on glacial directional features, shows that the ice sheet was partly drained through fast-flowing streams. Fast flow of the ice streams has been recorded in megascale lineations and flutes visible on the currently deglaciated bedrock, and is confirmed by simple mass balance considerations. Locations of the major drainage routes correlate with locations of geothermal anomalies, suggesting that ice stream activity was favoured by lubrication of the bed by meltwater produced in regions of high geothermal heat flux. Similar control of ice flow by geothermal activity is expected in ice sheets currently covering tectonically and volcanically active area such as the West Antarctic ice sheet.
