- Abstract
We examine the Pekka Himanen thesis: the emergence of a hacker ethic that promotes a radical and global social change because it undermines Protestantism, the foundation of capitalism (Weber). Himanen considers that free software, based on a passionate creativity and an intersubjective recognition of peers, questions the "Network-Society" (Castells). While the closed economy model privatizes information, hackers negotiate and, at the same time, freely share the goods. But the ambiguities and limits of this beta hackerism point more to the update of the original Protestant program via a new postmodern interface. Therefore, we actually need hacker politics.
