Abstract

Zebrafish (Danio rerio) is a valuable model for biomedical research because of its mammalian genetic similarities, rapid reproduction, and low maintenance costs. However, further investigation is required regarding their nutritional requirements and standardized laboratory diets. This study evaluated the metabolic and growth responses of zebrafish juveniles fed on diets supplemented with spirulina, Arthrospira platensis (SP) at different levels for 77 days. Six diets with SP inclusion levels of 0%, 2%, 4%, 6%, 8%, and 10% (SP0‐SP10) were formulated. A total of 300 zebrafish juveniles with an average initial weight of 0.113 ± 0.10 g (mean ± SD) were randomly distributed across six groups, with five replicates per group, each containing 10 animals. After 77 days, the SP6 group demonstrated significantly enhanced growth performance compared with the other supplementation levels. The condition factor was markedly higher in the SP6 and SP8 groups than in the SP0 group. No significant effects on total cholesterol levels were observed, but the SP4, SP6, and SP10 diets decreased triglyceride levels. Lipase activity was higher in the SP6 and SP8 groups than in the control group, whereas amylase activity showed no significant differences between treatments. Catalase and superoxide dismutase activities were significantly higher in the SP8 and SP10 groups than in the SP0 and SP2 groups. Glutathione S‐transferase activity was higher in the SP6, SP8, and SP10 groups than in the SP0 group. In addition, SP inclusion in zebrafish diets improved female gonadal development. In conclusion, this study indicates that SP supplementation has substantial potential as a growth promoter, positively influencing lipid metabolism and antioxidant enzyme activity without affecting zebrafish survival. Abstract

The oil spill that occurred in 2019 on the coast of Northeast Brazil significantly impacted fishing communities, including the community of Carne de Vaca in Goiana, Pernambuco. A study was conducted to analyze the effects of this event on the social reproduction of the fishermen's health in this community. Using the perspective of social reproduction and its relationship with health, the study adopted a hierarchical and complex approach to the phenomenon. Semistructured interviews, a literature review, and a systemic analysis of the collected data were conducted. Although Carne de Vaca was not directly affected, the impacts extended throughout the fishing territories. Fishermen suffered psychosocial damage due to the uncertainty caused by the lack of official information and inaccurate data regarding the quality of seafood products. Fishing activities were interrupted, resulting in significant income losses and food insecurity. The socio-environmental transformations affected the community's cultural, social, economic, and political aspects. The study highlights the importance of systemic approaches to understanding complex problems. The lack of assistance and health monitoring exacerbated the negative effects. Abstract

In the BM-C-33 area, divided into the Raia Manta and Raia Pintada development areas, reservoirs are arranged into three structural highs: Gávea, Seat, and Pão de Açúcar. These reservoirs consist of pre-salt limestones deposited on volcanic sequences and underwent complex diagenetic evolution. Successive post-depositional processes, including silicification, affected original mineral assemblage, modified pore textures, and caused intense fracturing. Based on borehole image logs (BHI), wireline data from four wells, and 2D and 3D seismic data, this study details natural fracture acoustic and resistivity properties. It also discusses the relationship of faults, fractures, and vugs with diagenetic and tectonic processes. The authors used the data to divide the pre-salt section (Cabiúnas and Macabu formations) into three informal stratigraphic units. The analysis of interpreted fractures within these units suggests that major fracturing occurred due to regional tectonic stress, with local aspects like structural positioning interfering. The results of the fracture analysis imply a direct relationship between fracturing and silicification. Additionally, fracture density, vug volume distribution, and the presence of dissolution features like enlarged fractures limited to specific units imply stratigraphic control on fluid percolation. Abstract

Simple Summary: Lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) is frequently consumed as an infusion because of its pharmacological properties, including suspected anti-inflammatory effects. In this study, we examined how lemongrass essential oil, a natural product, can help protect against inflammation and damage caused by stress in cells. We used zebrafish, a small fish often used in scientific research, to determine how different amounts of lemongrass oil affected their health. Our focus was on how the oil influenced the movement of certain immune cells (neutrophils), the healing of the fishes' tail fin, and the health of their cells. We found that lemongrass oil, at all tested levels, reduced the movement of these immune cells. Interestingly, higher amounts of the oil slowed down the healing of the tail fin. We also noticed changes in the activities of some of the fishes' protective enzymes, which are important for defending their cells against damage. Our study suggests that lemongrass oil could be useful for its anti-inflammatory properties and might help protect cells from certain types of stress. These findings are valuable because they can lead to a better understanding of natural remedies and their potential use in health and disease management. This study explored the protective capacity of the essential oil (EO) of Cymbopogon citratus against oxidative stress induced by hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and the inflammatory potential in zebrafish. Using five concentrations of EO (0.39, 0.78, 1.56, 3.12, and 6.25 μg/mL) in the presence of 7.5 mM H2O2, we analyzed the effects on neutrophil migration, caudal fin regeneration, cellular apoptosis, production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), and activities of the antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione S-transferase (GST) after 96 h of exposure. A significant decrease in neutrophil migration was observed in all EO treatments compared to the control. Higher concentrations of EO (3.12 and 6.25 μg/mL) resulted in a significant decrease in caudal fin regeneration compared to the control. SOD activity was reduced at all EO concentrations, CAT activity significantly decreased at 3.12 μg/mL, and GST activity increased at 0.78 μg/mL and 1.56 μg/mL, compared to the control group. No significant changes in ROS production were detected. A reduction in cellular apoptosis was evident at all EO concentrations, suggesting that C. citratus EO exhibits anti-inflammatory properties, influences regenerative processes, and protects against oxidative stress and apoptosis. Abstract

The Amazon rainforest and the biodiversity hotspot of the Atlantic Forest are home to fruit trees that produce functional foods, which are still underutilized. The present study aimed to select potential functional nut donor trees from two Brazilian chestnuts, by evaluating the nutritional and antioxidant composition of the nuts and the fatty acid profile of the oil. The nutritional characteristics, antioxidants, oil fatty acid profile, and X-ray densitometry of the nuts were evaluated, as well as the characterization of leaf and soil nutrients for each parent tree. The nut oil was evaluated through Brix (%), mass (g), yield (%), and the fatty acid profile. For L. pisonis, the most nutritious nuts were produced by L. pisonis tree 4 (N > P > K > Mg > Ca > Zn > Fe) and L. pisonis tree 6 (P > Ca > Mg > Mn > Zn > Cu > Fe), and for the species L. lanceolata, L. lanceolata tree 6 (N > P > Ca > Mg > Zn > Fe > Cu) and L. lanceolata tree 2 (P > K > Mg > Zn > Cu). In L. pisonis, the highest production of anthocyanins, DPPH, total phenolics, and flavonoids was obtained from the nuts of L. pisonis tree 4 as well as for L. lanceolata, from L. lanceolata tree 1, except for flavonoids. The Brix of the oil from the nuts of both species showed no difference between the trees and the fatty acid profile with a similar amount between saturated (48–65%) and unsaturated (34–57%) fatty acids. Both species have nuts rich in nutrients and antioxidant compounds and can be considered unconventional functional foods.
