Abstract

The article presents the author's reply to R. S. Khare regarding the criticism against his book "Rice as Self: Japanese Identities Through Time." According to him, Khare misrepresented one of the basic points of the book. Khare appears to feel that concept of the book is about the singular self of the Japanese, and forgetting the other of the Japanese under the umbrella of foreigners. The subtitle clearly indicates that the concept is about the selves and others of the Japanese, for whose self identities rice and rice paddies dished as the vehicles for deliberation.
