A lot of previous studies have reported ocular parameters and its relations before cataract surgery. However, despite ethnic differences in ocular biometry, few reports have dealt with Japanese. Hence, this retrospective cross-sectional study aimed to measure parameters of preoperative cataract patients and examines the correlations between each parameter in Japanese elderly people.Patients and Methods: The 210 subjects had their ocular axial lengths measured with OA-2000. The endpoints were ocular axial length (AL), central corneal thickness (CCT), average anterior corneal radius of curvature (CR), white-to-white (WTW), anterior chamber depth (ACD), and lens thickness (LT). Our analyses utilized the eye with the longer AL in each person. Each parameter was analyzed for correlations in a round-robin manner. Regression analyses were performed on parameters correlated with AL.Results: The parameters correlated with AL were CR (r = 0.33, P < 0.0001), WTW (r = 0.29, P < 0.0001), ACD (r = 0.59, P < 0.0001), and LT (r = − 0.30, P < 0.0001). These parameters related to AL in all simple regression equations (CR (P < 0.0001), WTW (P = 0.0002), ACD (P < 0.0001), LT (P = 0.0001)). In multiple regression analyses, CR, ACD, and LT might relate to AL (CR (P = 0.0002), ACD (P < 0.0001), LT (P = 0.018)). LT tended to be thinner as AL increased, while CR, WTW, and ACD tended to increase.Conclusion: This information may be useful in developing strategies for ophthalmic surgery, as it provides information on the location of intraocular tissues. Patients and methods: In the Department of Ophthalmology, Saitama Medical Center, Jichi Medical University, patients with idiopathic ERMs (23 eyes) and ERMs in eyes filled with SO (SO ERMs) after vitreous surgery to treat RRDs (nine eyes) were enrolled from July 2012 to March 2014. ERM tissues obtained intraoperatively were examined histopathologically. Besides the main outcome measure of the pathological findings of the ERM tissues, other outcome measures included the preoperative findings on optical coherence tomography (OCT) images and the surgical findings. Results: Eight (89%) of nine eyes with SO ERMs had bilayered membranes composed of a firm layer on the retinal side with glial cells and extracellular matrix and a fragile sponge-like layer on the vitreous side. The sponge-like layer was composed of emulsified SO surrounded by macrophages. Shinji Makino, Hironobu Tampo, Yusuke Arai, Hiroto ObataDepartment of Ophthalmology, Jichi Medical University, Shimotsuke, Tochigi, JapanAbstract: To evaluate correlations between choroidal abnormalities, Lisch nodules, and age in patients with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1), we examined ten cases with NF1 using near-infrared reflectance imaging. Patients ranged in age from 4 to 39 years. The angle used for near-infrared reflectance imaging was 55°. We counted the total number of choroidal abnormalities in an area within a 55° angle centered on the fovea and the total number of Lisch nodules on the iris by slit-lamp examination. No positive correlation was found between the number of Lisch nodules and patient age (Spearman's rank correlation coefficient ρ=0.117, P=0.7414). Choroidal abnormalities tended to increase with age (ρ=0.6150), but this difference was not statistically significant (P=0.0650). A positive correlation was found between the number of choroidal abnormalities and Lisch nodules (ρ=0.783, P=0.0267). Research indicates that concentrations of labile iron in Southern Ocean seawater are generally lowest in surface water columns and higher in deep water. Latitude, however, was found to affect iron profiles, with concentrations lower in the Antarctic Front and higher in the region south of the Antarctic Divergence.

Continental shelf sediments are an important source of iron (Fe) in the oceans. Observational data suggest that basin‐scale transport of sedimentary sourced Fe accompanies the ventilation of the intermediate layer in the North Pacific. Here we use a marine biogeochemical model to explore the Fe transport mechanism with a focus on the role of sinking particles. The lateral penetration of sedimentary sourced Fe was best simulated when we assumed a short desorption and disaggregation length scale of Fe from sinking particles. The simulation results indicated that Fe is laterally transported mainly through interactions with particles with sinking velocities of 180–460 m yr−1; these velocities are two orders of magnitude slower than typical sinking rates of marine aggregates determined from mass flux measurements. Slowly sinking particles drive the basin‐scale transport of Fe by prolonging its residence time and by injecting sedimentary sourced Fe supplied originally to less dense waters into the intermediate layer water across isopycnal surfaces. A large amount of Fe from shelf sediments of the Okhotsk and Bering Seas is exported to the North Pacific through this particle interaction. These results highlight a biogeochemical linkage between the marginal seas and ocean basins that has been overlooked in global ocean models. Plain Language Summary: Iron (Fe) is an essential micronutrient for marine phytoplankton, and understanding its source and cycle in the ocean is essential for understanding the future carbon cycle and thus climate change. Although continental shelf sediments have been thought to be a major Fe source, how Fe, which is hardly soluble in seawater, is transported to the open ocean is still unclear. We used a numerical model simulating marine biogeochemical cycles to investigate the transport mechanism and found that Fe is transported long distances in association with slowly sinking particles. Our results suggest that a large amount of the Fe in North Pacific waters comes from marginal sea shelf sediments. ABSTRACT Hyaluronic acid (HA), a high-molecular-weight natural polysaccharide, is often used in medical devices for regenerative medicine as it can undergo biodegradation via enzymatic action in the human body. HA exhibits both viscoelasticity and high biocompatibility and has therefore been used for ocular surgery. In particular, HA-based hydrogels have been utilized as cell scaffold materials and devices in ophthalmological treatments. In this study, four hydrogels have been synthesized from HA derivatives with methacrylate groups and modified with crosslinkers such as adipic acid dihydrazide, divinyl sulfone, and dithiothreitol. Each of the synthesized hydrogels exhibits high transparency and strength as well as biodegradability in vitro. Background: Conditioned pain modulation (CPM) is widely used to measure endogenous analgesia, and a recent study indicated that drugs that act on endogenous analgesia are more effective in individuals with lower CPM. Recent animal studies have indicated that pregabalin activates endogenous analgesia by stimulating the descending pain inhibitory system. The present study examined whether the analgesic effect of pregabalin is greater in individuals with lower original endogenous analgesia using CPM.Methods: Fifty-nine healthy subjects were randomly assigned to either a pregabalin group or a placebo group, and 50 of them completed the study. CPM was measured before and after pregabalin or placebo administration. The correlation of initial CPM to change in CPM was compared between the pregabalin and placebo groups.Results: Initial CPM was significantly correlated with the change in CPM in the pregabalin group (r = -0.73, p < 0.0001) but not in the placebo group (p = 0.56) (difference in correlation coefficients between groups; p = 0.004). Furthermore, the initial CPM significantly affected the change in CPM in the pregabalin group but not in the placebo group (pregabalin group: adj R2  = 0.51, p < 0.001, y = -0.54x + 2.98; placebo group: p = 0.56, significant difference in regression slopes; p = 0.015). These results indicate that pregabalin has a higher endogenous analgesic effect in individuals with lower original endogenous analgesia.Significance: The analgesic effect of pregabalin depends on the original endogenous analgesia status. Its effect on conditioned pain modulation (CPM) was stronger for subjects with lower original endogenous analgesia, suggesting that the mechanism of pregabalin involves the improvement of endogenous analgesia. Objectives:(1) To evaluate the learning potential and performance improvements during standing balance training with visual feedback (VBT) in individuals with incomplete spinal cord injury (SCI) and (2) to determine whether standing static and dynamic stability during training-irrelevant tasks can be improved after the VBT.Setting:National Rehabilitation Center for Persons with Disabilities, Tokorozawa, Japan.Methods:Six participants with chronic motor and sensory incomplete SCI who were able to stand for at least 5 min without any form of assistive device performed the VBT, 3 days per week, for a total of 12 sessions. During the training, participants stood on a force platform and were instructed to shift their center of pressure in the indicated directions as represented by a cursor on a monitor. The performance and the rate of learning were monitored throughout the training period. Before and after the program, static and dynamic stability was assessed.Results:All participants showed substantial improvements in the scores, which varied between 236±94 and 130±14% of the initial values for different exercises. The balance performance during training-irrelevant tasks was significantly improved: for example, the area inside the stability zone after the training reached 221±86% of the pre-training values.Conclusion:Postural control can be enhanced in individuals with incomplete SCI using VBT. PurposeTo assess the relationship between age and the incidence and severity (determined by a grading system) of pinguecula in contact lens (CL) wearers, and to compare the grade of pinguecula between CL wearers and non-wearers.MethodsA total of 600 CL wearers (94 wore hard CLs (HCLs) and 506 wore soft CLs (SCLs)) aged 11-60 years and 579 non-wearers aged 10-60 years were enrolled. The age, gender, medical history, ocular history, and grade of pinguecula at two locations (nasal and temporal) were determined in all subjects.ResultsThere was an age-related increase in the grade of pinguecula among both CL wearers and non-wearers. The grade of pinguecula at the temporal conjunctiva was higher in CL wearers than in non-wearers (P=0.01907), whereas it was higher in HCL wearers than SCL wearers at both the nasal and temporal conjunctiva (P<0.00001 and P<0.00001).ConclusionsThis was the first assessment of the severity of pinguecula in a large consecutive series of CL wearers. Background: Postoperative pain control contributes to quality of life. Activation of spinal cord microglia after peripheral nerve injury contributes to mechanical hypersensitivity. The contribution of spinal cord microglia to hypersensitivity after surgery, however, is not well understood. Here, the authors evaluated whether inhibition of spinal microglia reduced postoperative mechanical hypersensitivity, and if so, whether the effect differed from that in a rat neuropathic pain model.Methods: Male Sprague-Dawley rats underwent either unilateral plantar hind paw incision (postoperative pain model) or L5 spinal nerve transection (neuropathic pain model), and the development of mechanical hypersensitivity was assessed using von Frey filaments. The microglial inhibitor minocycline was intraperitoneally administered daily for either 3 or 7 days. Spinal microglial activation was evaluated by OX42 immunohistochemistry. We also tested the effect of intrathecal administration of a p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase inhibitor, SB203580.Results: In the postoperative pain model, minocycline did not suppress mechanical hypersensitivity, but did inhibit an increase in spinal OX42 expression. In contrast, in the neuropathic pain model, minocycline reduced mechanical hypersensitivity in a dose-related manner and inhibited spinal OX42 expression. SB203580 attenuated hypersensitivity in the neuropathic pain model, but not in the postoperative pain model.Conclusions: The results of the present study suggest that spinal OX42 expression has a more important role in the development of neuropathic pain than in postoperative pain, and that an increase in spinal OX42 expression does not contribute to postoperative mechanical hypersensitivity.
