Abstract The Fitzpatrick scale has been in use for skin colour typing according to the tanning potential of skin since its inception in 1975–1976. Thomas Fitzpatrick developed the scale to classify persons with ‘white skin’ in order to select the correct amount of UVA in Joules/cm2 for PUVA treatment for psoriasis. Since then, it has been widely used in Dermatology to gauge the skin's reaction to UV exposure, tanning potential, assessment of sunburn risk and amount of sun protection required for individual patients. However, the use of this scale has been of limited utility because of different self‐perception in different areas of the world, particularly among those with skin of colour. Skin cancer risk is loosely inversely correlated with the initial genetic/inherent amount of melanin (most research has focused on eumelanin) present in the skin, although the pattern of exposure and amount of UV radiation required causing DNA damage varies widely according to different cancers. In this review, we have shown that the Fitzpatrick scale is neither correct nor adequate to reflect sunburn and tanning risk for skin of colour. Therefore, it may give both patients and physicians a false sense of security that there is little risk that people of colour can develop skin cancers. We have reviewed the small but not insignificant risk of skin of colour developing skin cancers and emphasise that there remains much research that needs to be done in this field.

Abstract Bullous pemphigoid (BP) appears to be rising in incidence across the Western World, especially in the elderly. Some of the pathogenetic mechanisms involving antigen mimicry and antibody cross‐reactivity have been elucidated for cases associated with neurological disease and certain drugs. There have been reports of cutaneous manifestations of Covid‐19 (SARS‐Cov2 infection) as the pandemic has raged across the world. We report here a case of prolonged Covid‐19, symptomatic with dermatoses only, which was seen to evolve initially from a maculo‐papular exanthema with acral vesicular dermatitis, into classical BP disease. This was confirmed histologically by positive skin autoantibody serology, direct IMF on peri‐lesional skin and also salt‐split IMF. Although possible that the development of BP could be a purely co‐incidental finding during Covid‐19, we suggest that it is more likely that prolonged SARS‐Cov2 infection triggered an autoimmune response to the basement membrane antigens, BP 180 and 230. To our knowledge, this is the first case of BP developing during concurrent Covid‐19 disease. It will be necessary to continue dermatological surveillance as the pandemic continues, to collate data on BP incidence and to test these patients for Covid‐19 disease. Abstract Background Postpartum Depression (PPD) is a severe mental health condition that adversely affects mothers and their infants. The influence of PPD on maternal-infant bonding and breastfeeding practices has been scarcely reported in Nigeria. Therefore, we examined the prevalence of PPD, the associated factors, and the relationship with maternal-infant bonding and breastfeeding practices in Abeokuta, Nigeria. Method A descriptive cross-sectional survey was conducted among 600 mothers within the extended postpartum period (≤ 1 year) from three government-owned immunisation clinics at primary, secondary, and tertiary health facilities in Abeokuta, Ogun State. PPD was assessed using the Edinburgh postnatal depression Scale (EPDS ≥ 13), and maternal-infant bonding was evaluated using the Postpartum Bonding Questionnaire (PBQ ≥ 50). We also examined breastfeeding practices (i.e. the time to initiation by 30 min, exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months and early commencement of complementary feeding by 2 months). Data was analysed using chi-square and logistics regression models at a 5% significance level. Results The prevalence of PPD was 21.8%, 95% CI (18.7–25.3). Factors associated with PPD were maternal age: 25–34 years [AOR = 0.52; 95% CI (0.29–0.90)]; ≥ 35 years [AOR = 0.44; 95% CI (0.20–0.96)], being married [AOR = 0.43; 95% CI (0.21–0.85)], perceived stress increased the odds of PPD: moderate stress level [AOR = 8.38; 95% CI (3.50–19.9)]; high-stress level [AOR = 47.8; 95% CI (8.65–263.7)] and self-reported history of emotional problems [AOR = 3.25; 95% CI (1.43–7.38)]. There was a significant direct association between PPD and poor maternal-infant bonding [AOR = 3.91; 95% CI (1.04–4.60)]. PPD reduces the odds of early breastfeeding initiation [AOR = 0.43; 95% CI (0.28–0.68)], but no association was found between PPD and exclusive breastfeeding [AOR = 1.07; 95% CI (0.07–1.67)]. Conclusion The prevalence of PPD was high in our study population and associated with poor maternal-infant bonding and late breastfeeding initiation but not with exclusive breastfeeding. Promoting maternal mental health to foster stronger mother-infant relationships and better breastfeeding practices has become crucial.

AbstractThis study explored the forms of domestic violence experienced by men in contemporary South Africa. Domestic violence is mostly portrayed as a crime perpetrated by men against women. The harsh reality, however, is that women are also culprits and active participants in the commission of the crime. Unfortunately, a heavy silence masks this assertion, and only a few studies give credence to this, particularly in South Africa. From the findings of a just completed doctoral study which utilised a qualitative approach, this article examines the various forms of domestic violence experienced by men in South Africa. The study was conducted in three South African provinces: Gauteng, Limpopo and KwaZulu-Natal. Thirty (30) participants were interviewed for the study. Findings indicate that the dominant forms of domestic violence against men are physical, verbal, emotional, financial and legal abuse. The implications of these findings for an inclusive campaign against domestic violence are discussed.

Here in, we reported the utilization of guinea corn husk (an agricultural waste) and aluminium can (a municipal waste) for low-cost and sustainable means of zeolite Y preparation. Sodium silicate and sodium aluminate precursors were prepared from guinea corn husk and aluminium wastes respectively. The obtained solutions of the precursors were directly and hydrothermally converted to zeolite Y at 100 °C crystallization temperature for 24 h. The resulting zeolitic material was characterized by its properties. In comparison with collected standard data and commercially available zeolite Y, zeolite Y was successfully prepared from the waste resources. The result of X-ray Diffraction (XRD) indicated zeolite Y with good crystallinity, especially at the characteristic 2θ of 6.23°, 10.9° and 11.86°. The elemental compositions observed from Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX) are in appropriate proportion and also confirmed the product. The Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectra showed the major characteristic absorption bands of zeolite in the mid-infrared region. It can be concluded that re-using agricultural and municipal wastes for the preparation of zeolite Y was achieved. This is a sustainable means of preparation of zeolite Y through a waste management approach for potential applications in adsorption, catalysis and ion exchange.

Introduction The underlying factors of oral squamous cell cancers (OSCC) have been elucidated, but studies have focused little on etiological differences in affected oral cavity sites. The aim of this retrospective study was to clarify the role of carcinogen exposure in OSCC of different oral cavity areas. Methods A cross-sectional study of patients with primary OSCC was conducted retrospectively, based on patient records from Helsinki University Hospital, Finland, between January 2016 and December 2020. The patients’ self-reported history of tobacco smoking and alcohol use was explained by tumor site, age, sex, tumor size, and lymph node status in a logistic regression model. The information on smoking and alcohol use was compiled from a patient background form. Results In 519 patients, tumors occurred most often in the tongue (51%), gingiva (21%), or floor of the mouth (FOM; 15%). Abstract Future revolution in photovoltaics will be hinged mainly on cost, health implication, and material stability and performance. Based on these criteria, lead-based inorganic photovoltaics, organic–inorganic hybrid, and silicon photovoltaics are screened-out. According to the literature, the lead-free inorganic perovskite solar cell is favorably disposed to cost and safe-health. However, the simultaneous solution to material stability, high defect density, and low power conversion efficiency (PCE) still remains a mystery that has not been solved. This research proposed the green-based modifiable CaZnBr4 as a potential candidate for lead-free solar cell application based on the principle of A-site cation with green-based additive incorporation. The green-based additive was obtained from Kola Nitida, Carica Papaya, Ficus Exasperata, and Musa paradisiaca. The elemental characterization of the green-based additives was performed using X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF). The optical, crystalline, and electronic properties were characterized using ultraviolet–visible (UV–Vis) spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometry, Quantum Espresso, scanning electron microscopy and SCAPS-1D. The green-base-modified CaZnBr4 showed significant PCE improvement by 3% with significant film and crystallinity formation. The stressed state of the parent compound CaZnBr4 shows that it may be better suited for thermovoltaics application. It is recommended that better results could be obtained when different synthetic routes and green-based additives are used to initiate the defect passivation protocols.

African locust bean (Parkia biglobosa) is a multipurpose leguminous tree species of nutritional and pharmacological value. The plant is widely distributed in Africa and across Nigeria's major agroecological areas (AEAs). Amidst declining cultivation and production, P. biglobosa is genetically threatened in its natural habitats due to overexploitation, deforestation, wildfires and lack of improved tree management practices. Consequently, concerted research efforts directed towards germplasm collection and assessment of genetic relationships are imperative for conserving its genetic resources, sustainable management and selecting promising landraces for breeding programmes. The dataset presents rbcL intraspecific genetic diversity and population structure of 62 P. biglobosa landraces in Nigeria. A relatively high level of diversity and a low degree of nucleotide variability was observed among the landraces. Relatively high values of 642 total allele sites, 601 polymorphic sites, 504 parsimony information sites, 883 total number mutations, 9 haplotypes and 0.55 gene diversity were recorded for the sequence dataset. Low values of 0.35 nucleotide diversity and 5 InDels events were also recorded for the dataset. The gene flow in this dataset demonstrated an extensive exchange of genes between the three populations of P. biglobosa, which influenced the level of genetic differentiation (Gst) between the populations. Significantly low Gst (-0.01) was recorded between the Guinea and Sudan savannah populations, a moderate value (0.03) was recorded between the Sudan savannah and Rainforest populations and a higher Gst value (0.05) was recorded between the Guinea and Rainforest populations. The dataset highlights potential evolutionary dynamics that might influence variations relevant to the breeding and conservation of P. biglobosa in Nigeria and across its range in West and Central Africa.

The insertion of multicomponent photoactive guests into zeolite channels improves photoredox and photocatalytic efficiency. In this report, we present the synthesis of a variety of composites comprising Pd-doped TiO2 and zeolite NaY (ZeoNa-Y@TiO2/Pd) and investigate their photocatalytic efficacy. The zeolite NaY serves as a host for the active titanium dioxide phase, while the palladium nanoparticle acts as a co-catalyst. The zeolite NaY in the catalyst composition enhances the efficiency by hindering the electron-hole recombination. The most efficacious catalyst shows a hydrogen production rate of 3.5 mmol.g−1.h−1. The degradation of the methylene blue dye reaches discoloration and mineralization above 98%.

INTRODUCTION: Malaria in pregnancy is associated with a high rate of maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality. Utilization of preventive strategies during pregnancy is an integral part of controlling the burden of malaria in pregnancy. This study evaluated the malaria preventive strategies utilized and the prevalence of asymptomatic malaria among pregnant women at Adeoyo Maternity Teaching Hospital (AMTH), Ibadan, Nigeria. METHODS: A facility-based descriptive cross-sectional study among 223 pregnant women in Adeoyo Maternity Teaching Hospital, Ibadan, Nigeria. Information on socio-demographic and obstetric characteristics, malaria symptoms, and the preventive strategies utilized were obtained using a structured questionnaire. Descriptive and bivariate analysis using chi-square test and multivariate analysis at 95% confidence interval and p< 0.05 was used to determine the predictors of asymptomatic malaria infection in relation to socio-demographic characteristics and malaria preventive strategies utilized. RESULTS: The mean age was 30±5 years. More than half (53.4%) of them used insecticide-treated nets consistently, 49.3% sprayed the room regularly with insecticides, while the majority (88.3%) reported they maintained a clean environment. However, 11.7% tested positive for the malaria parasite. Consistency in the use of insecticide-treated net (ITN) and participants age were factors associated with malaria occurrence (p=0.01). The use of ITN and being >30 years of age are protective factors against having malaria infection among pregnant women (AOR= 0.34; 95%, CI=0.14-0.84) and (AOR=0.31; 95% CI=0.13-0.76) respectively. CONCLUSION: Irrespective of all other malaria preventive strategies adopted by pregnant women, consistent use of ITN was independently a protective factor against developing malaria in pregnancy.

Background and Objectives: Water is crucial to human existence but may be contaminated with microorganisms, thus making it unfit for consumption. This study aimed to evaluate the physicochemical properties and bacterial loads of selected river waters in Ondo State, Nigeria. Materials and Methods: Ten major rivers were sampled between April and August, 2021. The pH, temperature, total alkalinity, colour, turbidity, electrical conductivity, dissolved oxygen, ammonium, aluminium, organic matters, nitrate levels including the microbial loads were determined according to standard procedures. Confirmation of identified isolates was achieved by API 20E and API 20NE. Results: The turbidity, colour, conductivity, ammonium, and aluminium ranged from 4.3 to 15.2 NTU, 4 to 20 NTU, 123.5 to 580.2 mgL-1, 0 to 3.5 mgL-1, and 0.05 to 1.7, respectively. Most physicochemical parameters showed no significant differences from the WHO permissible limits for drinking water (p > 0.05). The total viable bacterial count in the rivers ranged from 1.5 × 105 to 6.3 × 105 CFUmL-1, while the total coliform count ranged from 1.3 × 103 to 4.8 × 103 CFUmL-1. The predominant bacteria were Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Conclusion: This study revealed that the physiochemical properties of the waters were majorly within the WHO permissible standards but with significantly higher bacterial loads.

During its passing, money can get contaminated and may thus plays a role in the transmission of microorganisms to other people. Hence this study evaluates the mycological contamination of Nigerian currency naira notes in circulation at Badeggi Town, Niger State, Nigeria using appropriate standard techniques. The findings revealed that all samples contain fungal contaminants and higher contamination rates was recorded in low denominations naira notes. The fungi isolated in these studies include Aspergillus niger (16.9%) which was the most prevalent, followed by Mucor spp (13.8%) and Penicillium spp (13%), Aspergillus fumigatus (12.3%), Fusarium spp and Candida glabrata (10%), Rhizomucor spp and Rhinosporidiosis spp (8.4%) and the least Aspergillus flavus (6.9%). The currency notes are fomites, which serve as a vehicle for transmission of pathogenic organisms causing infections. Good hygiene and proper education of Nigerians on the public health risks posed by mishandling naira notes should be done to reduce the spread of pathogens and parasites through naira notes.

Background: Brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) is a sensitive biomarker that is valuable in the management of childhood heart failure. Studies have reported racial differences in the level of BNP, especially in the adult population. The level of BNP in healthy Nigerian newborn babies is unknown. Hence, we determined the level of BNP in healthy term appropriate for gestational age (AGA) newborn babies. Methods: This was a cross - sectional study,85 healthy term AGA newborn babies aged 24 to 72 hours. The babies had relevant demographic parameters documented in a proforma and BNP assay analysed using ELISA method. Results: The median IQR serum BNP level was 341.43 (313.39 to 425.45) pg/ml. The median level in females, was higher than males, {393.86 (296.97- 460.62) pg/ml vs328.05 (313.61-389.39) pg/ml, p >0.05}. There was no significant relationship between serum BNP and birth weight, chronological age, gestational age, or mode of delivery (p>0.05 in each case). Conclusion: The study demonstrated high BNP levels in healthy term Nigerian newborns. There was no relationship between BNP, the chronological age, birth weight, gender, gestational age or mode of delivery in babies between 24 to 72 hours of life.

Herein, an adsorption study of congo red (CR) dye onto ZnO and Al2O3/ZnO is reported. ZnO was prepared using conventional chemicals by co-precipitation method and Al2O3 used in the composite was prepared through recycling of aluminium waste. Information about the materials was obtained through spectroscopic techniques. A batch adsorption method was used to obtain the adsorption data from which isotherm, kinetic and thermodynamic parameters were obtained. The result of the adsorbents characterisation revealed the expected properties of the prepared materials. The adsorption capacities at 250 mg/L of CR dye were 24.33 mg/g and 24.57 mg/g for ZnO and Al2O3/ZnO respectively. The isotherm study of the adsorption process revealed that Langmuir model fitted best the adsorption data with monolayer adsorption capacities (qm) of 27.67 mg/g and 33.39 mg/g for ZnO and Al2O3/ZnO respectively. The adsorption was rapid within the first 15 min and the equilibrium was reached at 45 min. The kinetic study followed a pseudo-second-order model with the rate constant of 0.049 and 0.093 g.mg-1.min-1 for ZnO and Al2O3/ZnO respectively. Experimentally, the process was endothermic and was supported by the positive values of enthalpy (ΔH) with positive values of entropy (ΔS). The change in free energy (ΔG) is negative at all temperatures studied, indicating spontaneity but more spontaneous for Al2O3/ZnO than ZnO. The adsorption of CR dye from an aqueous solution onto ZnO as an adsorbent can be slightly improved upon by the introduction of Al2O3 to form Al2O3/ZnO composite.

Heat shock protein 27 (HSP27) is a protein that works as a chaperone and an antioxidant and is activated by heat shock, environmental stress, and pathophysiological stress. However, HSP27 dysregulation is a characteristic of many human cancers. HSP27 suppresses apoptosis and cytoskeletal reorganization. As a result, it is recognized as a critical therapeutic target for effective cancer therapy. Despite the effectiveness of multiple HSP27 inhibitors in pre-clinical investigations and clinical trials, no HSP27 inhibitor has progressed to the anticancer phase of the development. These difficulties have mostly been attributable to existing anticancer therapies’ inability to target oncogenic HSP27. Highly selective HSP27 inhibitors with higher effective-ness and low toxicity led to the development of combination techniques that include computer-aided assisted therapeutic discovery and design. This study emphasizes the most recent results and roles of HSP27 in cancer and the potential for utilizing an anticancer chemical database to uncover novel compounds to inhibit HSP27.

Lipomas are relatively rare in the head and neck, and sialolipoma was described as an entity about 20 years ago as lipoma that entraps salivary gland tissue. Less than 10 cases have been described in the floor of the mouth not related to the major salivary glands. Here, we report a case of sialolipoma affecting the floor of the mouth in a 47-year-old patient and reviewed the clinical, histologic, and immunohistochemical characteristics of the lesion.

Background: Admission cardiotocography (CTG), a noninvasive procedure, is used to indicate the state of oxygenation of the fetus on admission into the labor ward. Objective: This study assessed the association of admission CTG findings with neonatal outcome at a tertiary health facility. Materials and Methods: A prospective, observational study of 206 pregnant women who were admitted into the labor ward with singleton live pregnancies. Information on the demographic characteristics, obstetrics and medical history, admission CTG tracing, and neonatal outcome was obtained using a structured data collection form. Data were analyzed using the SPSS software version 20.0 with the level of significance set at P < 0.05. Results: The admission CTG findings were normal in 73.3%, suspicious in 13.6%, and pathological in 13.1% of the women. The occurrence of low birth weight, special care baby unit (SCBU) admission, asphyxiated neonates, neonatal death, and prolonged hospital admission was significantly more frequent among those with pathological admission CTG results compared with normal and suspicious results (P < 0.05). The incidence of vaginal delivery was more common when the CTG findings were normal, whereas all women with pathological CTG result had a cesarean delivery. Conclusion: Admission CTG was effective in identifying fetuses with a higher incidence of perinatal asphyxia. Neonatal outcome such as low birth weight, APGAR score, SCBU admission, and prolonged hospital admission was significantly associated with pathological CTG findings. In the absence of facilities for further investigations, prompt intervention for delivery should be ensured if admission CTG is pathological. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To evaluate spectrum and resistance rates to antibacterial agents in causative pathogens of bacterial prostatitis in patients from Southern Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. Materials: 1027 isolates from cultures of urine or expressed prostatic secretion, post-massage urine or seminal fluid, or urethral samples were considered. Lateral periodontal cyst (LPC) is an uncommon developmental odontogenic cyst arising on the lateral surface of tooth roots. Commonly reported in mandibular canine-premolar or maxillary anterior regions, it presents as a well-circumscribed or tear drop-shaped radiolucency with a sclerotic border. Associated teeth are asymptomatic and vital, and roots may be displaced without resorption. Histopathologically, cystic lining resembles reduced enamel epithelium along with glycogen-rich clear cells and epithelial plaques. Unilateral variant of LPC has low recurrence and is managed by enucleation. A 43-year-old male patient reported with asymptomatic swelling in the left mandibular canine and first premolar region. Both teeth were vital, and radiographs revealed well-circumscribed radiolucency between the roots. Following consent, surgical enucleation and guided bone regeneration (GBR) with xenograft and resorbable collagen membrane were done under local anesthesia. The immediate postoperative period was uneventful, and complete bone fill of cystic cavity and healing of periodontal tissues was observed after a one-year follow-up. Histopathologic examination confirmed the diagnosis. LPC should be a differential diagnosis in cystic lesions lateral to the surface of a tooth and without any associated inflammation. Based on this case report, unicystic LPC can be successfully managed through surgical enucleation with GBR for better periodontal healing.

Lassa fever (LF), an acute viral haemorrhagic fever, is an endemic zoonotic viral infection in West Africa countries with up to 15% case fatality rate. Though a rodent-borne infection, it can also be transmitted from person to person during the care of sick relations or more commonly in health care settings as a nosocomial infection. Vertical transmission from mother to child has been documented. We report 2 cases of LF among pregnant women which were managed at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, between September and October 2014. Both patients were in their early 20s with only one surviving the disease. Both had supportive therapy but none had antiviral therapy. This report emphasized the importance of early presentation, high index of suspicion, prompt diagnosis, and early commencement of supportive therapy in the management of patients suspected with LF especially in the era of other viral haemorrhagic infections.

Pericopsis laxiflora (Fabaceae) is a savannah shrub used traditionally to treat headache, stomach ulcers, heart pain and abdominal pain. Air-dried leaves and stem of the plant were extracted by hydrodistillation and the oils obtained were characterized using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Antimicrobial assay was carried out by agar well diffusion method against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Klebsiellae pneumonia, (gram negative bacteria), Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella typhi, Bacillus subtilis, (gram positive bacteria); Candida albicans, Aspergillus niger, Penicillum notatum and Rhizopus stolonifer (fungi) while antioxidant activity was determined by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical method. Oxygenated monoterpenes (32.92%), monoterpenes (22.58%) and sesquiterpenes (21.63%) hydrocarbons dominated the leaves' oil and monoterpenes (33.63%), sesquiterpenes (18.42%) and diterpenes (21.48%) hydrocarbons dominated the stem' oil. The leaf oil showed better scavenging activity at 1.0 mL (60.56%) than the stem oil (46.58%) comparing activity with ascorbic acid and butylated hydroxyl anisole (BHA) in the antioxidant assay. P. laxiflora stem oil showed highest activity against K. pneumonia and E. coli at 100 µg/mL and 50 µg/mL with comparable activity to gentamicin and tioconazole which are antibacterial and antifungal standards respectively. This study therefore showed that the colourless volatile oils exhibited comparable bioactivity with standards thus, justifying the plant's ethno medicinal application. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: The study investigated Interleukin-6 expression pattern across all stages of cancer. The research questions raised in the study were: Is there differential expression of Interleukin-6 across all cancer stages? kin-6W hat relationship exists between serum Interleu level and cancer stage?. Methods: The prospective case-control study comprised sixty two (62) purposively selected cancer participants across all stages and age range 18 years to 72 years as well equal number of healthy volunteers from two medical centers in Nigeria. Three milliliters (3 ml) of blood samples was collected intravenously from the participants and centrifuged after 30 minutes of collection at 3000 rpm for 10 minutes to obtain serum. The serum level of Interleukin-6 was determined spectrophotometrically by Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA). Data obtained were expressed as mean and standard error of the mean. One way Analysis of variance and t-test were employed to test for significance difference between the groups and the significant level was considered at P<0.05. Results: Findings from the study revealed significant (P<0.05) higher mean serum Interleukin-6 levels in stage IV cancer participants as compared to other disease stages. In the same way, significant higher mean Interleukin-6 level of stage III cancer participants as compared to that of stage I cancer participants was observed. Furthermore, the study revealed a significant correlation (P<0.01) between serum Interleukin-6 concentration and cancer stage. Background: Waiting time is a significant feature in defining the quality of care. In a competitive health-care setting, long waiting time of patients in an outpatient department (OPD) badly affects the clients' satisfaction and the Hospitals reputation for patronage. This study sought to determine the patients' waiting time, satisfaction and their relationship in Lafia Nasarawa State. Methodology: This was a cross-sectional study amongst clients accessing care at the OPD of Dalhatu Araf Specialist Hospital, Lafia. Interviewer-administered questionnaire was administered to participants recruited consecutively over 6 weeks' period. De-identifiers were used to maintain privacy and confidentiality of data. The analysis was done using SPSS version 23. Patients waiting time in each unit, the cumulative time spent before accessing care and clients' satisfaction were evaluated. Correlation coefficient was determined. Significant P < 0.05. Results: Of the 783 participants, 61.7% waited for over an hour before seeing a doctor. More than half (50.6%) of these were on follow-up visits. 66.3% and 73.4% were satisfied with the care received at reception and the overall hospital services, respectively. Others were 66.4%, 81.0%, 84.4% and 81.3% satisfaction at the record, nursing, consulting room and pharmacy units, respectively. A third was dissatisfied with the long waiting. Reasons for the long waiting were; large patients turn-out, long folders search/poor record keeping, inadequate personnel and late arrival of doctors. Patients' satisfaction was significantly influenced by the waiting time across all units P < 0.001. Conclusions: Although the waiting period in this study seems long, there is a high level of satisfaction with the health-care services across units with a third of the responders dissatisfied with the long waiting time. Large patients, poor record keeping delaying folders retrieval, inadequate personnel and late arrival of doctors were reasons for the long waiting. Short waiting is associated with satisfaction. Different parts of Cola millenii have been used in traditional medicine and available information in the literature has highlighted some nutritional potentials of Cola millenii seed and pulp. Previous studies on the toxicity of the seed were conducted on the extracts and conflicting evidences were obtained. Therefore, this study assesses the health risk of consuming Cola millenii seed and pulp flour in Wistar Albino rats. The result obtained showed insignificant (p>0.05) difference in the organ weight of rats across the groups. Feeding of animals with the whole seed, pulp, and defatted seed flour showed no toxic effects on the food and water intake. Significant (p<0.05) increase was observed in the AST activity of group fed with whole seed and defatted seed flour while no significant (p>0.05) difference was observed in the ALT and GGT activity across the groups. Creatinine concentration decreased significantly (p<0.05) in the group fed with the defatted seed flour while urea concentration decreased significantly (p<0.05) in the group fed with the whole seed flour. Degenerative changes indicated by inflammation, necrosis and fibrosis were observed in the liver of group fed with the whole seed flour as well as in the kidney of groups fed with whole seed, defatted seed, and pulp of C. millenii. The result of this study showed that C. millenii seed might be slightly toxic. Therefore, there is a need for caution in the use of C. millenii as food. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Dysmenorrhea, a common gynecologic complaint among adolescent and young women is of public health importance because of its impact on their regular activities. This study aimed to determine the predisposing factors of dysmenorrhea, its effects, and health-seeking behavior among University students. Methods: This analytic cross-sectional study was conducted among 319 students selected through multistage random sampling technique from major halls of residence in the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. Information on respondents’ demographic characteristics, effect of dysmenorrhea on their daily activities, and their health-seeking behavior was collected using a self-administered questionnaire. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 22.0 with level of statistical significance set at P < 0.05. Results: The mean age of the respondents was 20.8 ± 1.91 years, and the prevalence of dysmenorrhea was 82.1%. The commonest symptom among those experiencing dysmenorrhea was low mood (51.9%). The length of cycle was the only factor associated with the presence of dysmenorrhea (P = 0.041). Ninety-two (35.1%) respondents sought medical attention. Severity and duration of pain, duration and heaviness of flow, and previous treatment for sexually transmitted infection were associated with their health-seeking behavior (P < 0.05). Class absenteeism, limitation to extracurricular activities, and restriction in relationship with others had significant impact on the students with moderate and severe dysmenorrhea (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Despite the high prevalence of dysmenorrhea, less than half of the students sought medical attention even though it affected their class attendance, extracurricular activities, and relationship with others.

Background: Radiation increases free radical from sub-toxic to toxic concentration in rats. Free radicals attack and transformed haemoglobin from biconcave to echinocyte structure (sickling), leading to haematological alteration.This study investigated the effects of n-butanol subfractions 1, 2, 3 and 4 of A. digitata and 1, 2 and 3 of C. olitorius leaves against irradiation-induced haematological alterations in Rats. Materials and Methods: A total of 54 rats (198 ± 5.00 g) grouped into 9 of 6 each; Group i were placed on animal feed and clean water only. Groups ii-ix were exposed to irradiation and groups ii, iii, iv, v, vi, vii, viii and ix were provided-with clean water only, 1000 mg/kg body weight subfractions 1, 2, 3 and 4 of A. digitata and 1, 2 and 3 of C. olitorius respectively for 7 days. Results: HPLC fingerprinting of the subfractions of both leaves contained catechin, luteolin, astragalin, eleagnin, quercetin, tocopherol and others. Irradiation significantly (p < 0.05) decreased haemoglobin concentration (HBC), red blood cell count (RBC), platelets (PLT) and white blood cell (WBC) of rats, when compared with the control. Administration of the subfractions of A. digitata and C. olitorius leaves significantly (p < 0.05) increased HBC, RBC, PLT and WBC when compared with non-administered groups. The concentration of bilirubin, Fe3+ and CO2 significantly (p < 0.05) increased in the irradiated rats, but were attenuated by the n-butanol subfractions of both plants. Conclusion: n-butanol subfractions of Adansonia digitata and Cochorous olitorius contained bioactive constituents that are heamato-protective.

Abstract Background The most recent WHO guideline on antenatal care (ANC) utilization reaffirmed the necessary and compulsory care and services a pregnant woman should receive to maximize the importance and gains of ANC. While most studies focused on the time of initiation and number of ANC contacts, emphasis was rarely placed on the components of ANC offered to women. This study assessed how complete the components of ANC received by pregnant women are as a proxy for the quality of ANC services offered in Nigeria. We also assessed the clustering of the components and state-level differentials and inequalities in the components of ANC received in Nigeria. Methods We used nationally representative cross-sectional data from the 2018 Nigeria Demographic Health Survey. We analysed the data of 11,867 women who had at least one ANC contact during the most recent pregnancy within five years preceding the survey. The assessed components were tetanus injection, blood pressure, urine test, blood test, iron supplement, malaria intermittent preventive treatment in pregnancy (IPTp), and told about danger signs. Others are intestinal parasite drugs (IPD)intermittent and HIV/PMTCT counsel. Descriptive statistics, bivariable and multivariable multilevel Bayesian Monte Carlo Poisson models were used. Results In all, 94% had blood pressure measured, 91% received tetanus injection, had iron supplement-89%, blood test-87%, urine test-86%, IPTp-24%, danger signs-80%, HIV/PMTC-82% and IPD-22%. The overall prevalence of receiving all 9 components was 5% and highest in Ogun (24%) and lowest in Kebbi state (0.1%). The earlier the initiation of ANC, the higher the number of contacts, and the higher the quality of ANC received. Respondents with higher education have a 4% (adjusted incidence risk ratio (aIRR): 1.04, 95% credible interval (CrI): 1.01–1.09) higher risk of receiving more components of ANC relative to those with no education. The risk of receiving more ANC components was 5% (aIRRR: 1.05, 95% CI: 1.01–1.10) higher among pregnant women aged 40 to 49 years than those aged 15 to 19 years. Women who decide their healthcare utilization alone had a 2% higher risk of getting more components than those whose spouses are the only decision taker of healthcare use. Other significant factors were household wealth status, spouse education, ethnicity, place of ANC, and skill of ANC provider. Pregnant women who had their blood pressure measured were very likely to have blood and urine tests, tetanus injections, iron supplements, and HIV talks. Conclusions Only one in every 20 pregnant women received all the 9 ANC components with wide disparities and inequalities across the background characteristics and the States of residence in Nigeria. There is a need to ensure that all pregnant women receive adequate components. Stakeholders should increase supplies, train, and create awareness among ANC providers and pregnant women in particular.

Biofilm is a structurally-connected microbial community, covered by a self-produced polymeric matrix and adhered to biotic or abiotic surfaces. This study aimed to evaluate the occurrence of biofilm-producing antibiotic-resistant bacteria in water from distribution systems. Water samples were taken from 32 tanks across Ondo City and Akure metropolis, Nigeria. Information regarding the sanitation status of the tanks was gathered by observation and oral interviews. The physicochemical properties were determined using standard methods. Using the pour plate technique. Agars included serially diluted water samples were inoculated onto plate count agar, mannitol salt agar, Salmonella-Shigella agar, MacConkey agar, and cetrimide nutrient agar to assess total viable bacteria, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella and Shigella, coliforms, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, respectively. Eosin-methylene blue agar was used to cultivate Escherichia coli and Enterobacter aerogenes. Pure isolates were characterised using API kits and assessed for antibiotic resistance and biofilm production employing the Kirby-Bauer and tissue culture plate techniques, respectively. The ages of the water tanks ranged from 1 to 25 years old; all tanks had cover-lids; 13 (40.63%) had water guards while 12 (37.5%) underwent water treatment. The physicochemical properties chiefly fell within WHO standards for drinking water. One hundred and eighty-seven isolates were obtained. S. aureus (15.51%) had the highest frequency while Salmonella enterica (3.2%) had the lowest frequency. Thirty-six percent of the isolates were strong biofilm producers, while 20.67% Gram-negative and 18.69% Gram-positive bacterial isolates were antibiotic-resistant. This study revealed a high occurrence of biofilm-forming bacteria and prevalence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in water distribution systems, emphasizing the urgency of improving water quality for public health protection.

Domestic violence (DV) by women against men is as rife as violence by men against women. This paper argues that viewing DV as a crime committed only by men against women and never by women against men is wrong. The study explored the existence of domestic abuse against men and the gender neutrality of the Domestic Violence Act of South Africa using a mixed-methods research strategy. The Gauteng, Limpopo, and KwaZulu-Natal provinces in South Africa were used for data collection. A sample size of roughly 200 represents quantitative aspects. Open invitations were also extended to 30 people to participate in semi-structured one-on-one interviews for the qualitative research component, while questionnaires were sent to approximately 170 respondents. Participants and respondents included South African Police Service members who deal with gender-based violence (GBV); the Department of Social Development; the Commission for Gender Equality; non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in three selected provinces that deal with DV against men, namely Aka Sosha, Moshate, Matrix, and Real Men; male survivors of DV; religious leaders; members of the Department of Social Development; houses of traditional leaders; members of Families South Africa (Famsa); social workers; a psychologist; and members of Sonke (a GBV support group). The results revealed that South African men often experience domestic abuse. Secondly, the police do not treat male abuse victims in the same manner as female victims. Thirdly, there are no support services for male victims in South Africa. The study recommends the fair implementation of the law and legal support. Although the Domestic Violence Act of 1998 (as amended) is gender-neutral, its implementation is not. There is a need for healthcare professionals, mental healthcare workers (including psychologists and certified counsellors as community workers), police officials, legal personnel (including court administrators), and religious leaders to receive training on men's issues. This training will aid in providing care, protection, and counselling to male victims of DV.

Abstract Introduction Anaemia remains a major public health concern, particularly, in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), where it is one of the causes of maternal death. The most common cause of maternal anaemia is iron deficiency or malnutrition. This study examined the prevalence of and risk factors for anaemia among women that participated in the Nigerian Demographic Health Survey. Method We used data of 14,454 women that participated in the 2018 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS). We extracted information such as demographic, social and housing, dietary characteristics and haemoglobin concentration. The descriptive statistic results, prevalence and 95% confidence interval (CIs) of anaemia with the selected respondents background characteristics were presented. The Poisson regression model with robust variance was used to assess the risk of anaemia among women of reproductive age. All analyses were weighted and adjusted for the complex survey design. Abstract Background Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy including preexisting (or chronic) hypertension are the most common complication encountered during pregnancy that contribute significantly to maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality. Brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) and copeptin have been investigated as biomarkers in various hypertensive disorders, but studies of their clinical value in chronic hypertensive pregnant women are sparce. This study aimed to assess the levels of BNP and copeptin in chronic hypertensive pregnant women and investigate their correlation with blood pressure (BP) in chronic hypertensive pregnant women in South Western Nigeria. Methods One hundred and sixty consenting pregnant women in their third trimester of pregnancy, grouped into those with chronic hypertension (n = 80) and normotensive (n = 80), were recruited for this cross-sectional study. Age and clinical characteristics were obtained, and blood was aseptically drawn for BNP and copeptin measurement using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Data was analyzed with IBM SPSS ver. 20.0. Energy consumption forecasting is an operation of predicting the future energy consumption of electrical systems using previous or historical data. The Long Short-term Memory (LSTM) Model; a deep learning model was used in this project to analyze the Short-term consumption forecast performance. This was carried out by using an energy consumption dataset obtained from the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) Benin City regional 132/33KV transmission station. The dataset were daily load readings recorded in the half-hourly format from August to December 2021. The model was used to demonstrate the feasibility of generating an accurate short-term load forecast for the case study despite the peculiarity and insufficiency of the energy consumption readings. Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) and Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) are the statistical evaluation metrics used. The approach produces exceptional levels of accuracy, with MAPE of 0.010 and RMSE of 19.759 for a 100 time-step. The findings imply that the LSTM model can make accurate predictions with minimal error, and this Deep learning model may be a useful tool for short-term forecasting demand. This finding serves as a baseline for future research in this field of study and power system planning.
