14. Scaling up Three-Dimensional Science Learning through Teacher-Led Study Groups across a State

Abstract

The vision for science teaching in the Framework for K-12 Science Education and the Next Generation Science Standards requires a radical departure from traditional science teaching. Science literacy is defined as three-dimensional (3D), in which students engage in science and engineering practices to develop and apply science disciplinary ideas and crosscutting concepts. This knowledge building presents many challenges for teachers. We describe a two-pronged program for scaling 3D science professional development (PD) across a state: (a) 24 teachers developed expertise in 3D learning and facilitating teacher study groups; (b) these peer facilitators led 22 study groups of teachers in 3D science activities, analyzing student learning, and investigating classroom interactions. We describe design approaches for supporting teacher and facilitator learning. We present analyses of teacher learning, including shifts in 3D science, beliefs, and pedagogical content knowledge that supports 3D science teaching, and consider implications for scalable design approaches for supporting science teacher learning.

Abstract

OpenSciEd is an ambitious effort to implement the vision of the "Framework for K-12 Science Education" and the "Next Generation Science Standards" broadly across the United States. The premise of OpenSciEd is that high quality instructional materials can play a critical role in transforming science teaching and learning at a broad scale. To achieve its goal, this collaborative project is developing instructional materials for middle school science that support the shifts in practice required to achieve the outcomes called for by the "Framework for K-12 Science Education" and the "Next Generation Science Standards" at a large scale. The OpenSciEd Middle School Program development project is addressing the challenge of making large changes in practice at a large scale through attention to (1) who participates in design and development, and how; (2) providing explicit guidance for developers in a comprehensive design framework; and (3) a design and development process that ensures participation from the desired participants and adherence to the guidelines of the design framework. The resulting instructional materials have shown promise in external reviews and field tests, but their success in achieving the project's goals for transforming science will depend on the circumstances in which the program is implemented.

16. Storyline Units: An Instructional Model to Support Coherence from the Students' Perspective

Abstract

The vision of the Framework and NGSS requires important shifts in teaching approaches and instructional materials. We argue that this commitment to engaging learners in meaningful practice and supporting students' epistemic agency entails that we support "coherence from the students' perspective." This coherence arises when students see their science work as making progress on questions and problems their classroom community has committed to address, rather than simply following directions from textbooks or teachers. We present an instructional model, "storylines," to support this form of coherence. The storylines approach includes design principles for engaging students with phenomena and problems to elicit their own questions that teachers, with support of curriculum materials, use to guide the trajectory of their sensemaking. We describe how storylines organize cycles of engaging with phenomena, questions, and sensemaking to incrementally build, test, and revise explanatory models and design solutions. Storylines are supported by a collection of instructional routines and norms that provide strategies and tools to guide teachers' work with students around phenomena, questions, and sensemaking. The routines reflect strategies for eliciting questions from anchoring phenomena, navigation to engage students as partners in managing the direction of investigations, problematizing to help students find gaps in their work so far, and putting pieces together to support students in assembling what they have figured out. We present examples from elementary, middle, and high school storyline-based units awarded the NGSS design badge to illustrate the application of these design principles in the design and enactment of storyline-based units.

Abstract

Crosscutting concepts (CCs) are designed to help students make sense of phenomena across multiple scientific disciplines. We describe an instructional approach that scaffolds students' use of CCs to help students make sense of and ask productive questions about an anchoring phenomenon. We share analysis of students' use of language of the seven CCs in their initial questions added to the Driving Question Board in three different high school storyline units. Our goals were to see how students use different CCs and how we can support student use of targeted CCs in instructional units. We found that students used some CCs more often than others when developing questions. These questions were productive as they were well aligned to the core science ideas that are developed in subsequent lessons, supporting the finding that CCs are a low-threshold sensemaking tool for all students. We describe how the analysis informed revisions of each of the units to strengthen supports for students' use of particular CCs in their sensemaking of phenomena. Abstract

Retrospective, real-world study to evaluate visual acuity (VA), anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) injection intervals, and central macular thickness (CMT) in neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) eyes switched to brolucizumab only or to brolucizumab alternating with another anti-VEGF.Methods: The overall study population comprised eyes that were given ≥ 1 brolucizumab injection between 1 October 2019 and 30 November 2021. The brolucizumab-only (BRO) cohort consisted of prior anti-VEGF-treated eyes treated exclusively with ≥ 3 brolucizumab injections over ≥ 12 or ≥ 18 months; the alternating brolucizumab (ALT) cohort comprised prior anti-VEGF-treated eyes treated with ≥ 2 brolucizumab injections and ≥ 1 other anti-VEGF over ≥ 12 or ≥ 18 months.Results: A total of 482 eyes received ≥ 1 brolucizumab injection during the study period. Mean VA changes from baseline were − 1.1± 15.1 letters (BRO cohort; n = 174) and 1.3± 13.0 letters (ALT cohort; n = 47) at Month 12, and 0.0± 13.5 letters (BRO cohort; n = 95) and − 7.3± 17.2 letters (ALT cohort; n = 29) at Month 18. Mean changes in injection intervals were +26.9± 48.1 days (BRO cohort) and +11.1± 17.3 days (ALT cohort) at Month 12 and +36.3± 52.3 days (BRO cohort) and +14.0± 19.9 days (ALT cohort) at Month 18. Mean changes in CMT were − 35.2± 108.1 μm (BRO cohort) and − 31.5± 91.2 μm (ALT cohort) at Month 12 and − 38.9± 75.0 μm (BRO cohort) and − 9.0± 59.9 μm (ALT cohort) at Month 18. Intraocular inflammation-related adverse events were recorded in 22/482 (4.6%) eyes.Conclusion: Treatment with either brolucizumab alone or brolucizumab alternating with another anti-VEGF can preserve vision, reduce CMT, and extend anti-VEGF injection intervals in patients with nAMD. Abstract

A variety of fruits and vegetables, including raspberries, blueberries, Concord grapes, blackberries, strawberries, peaches, eggplant, red cabbage, and red onions, contain flavonoid compounds known as anthocyanins that are responsible for the blue-red color and the astringent taste associated with such foods. In addition, anthocyanins exhibit a wide range of chemical properties, such as radical scavenging, metal chelation, pH-dependent color changes, and intramolecular stabilization. Two experiments have been developed for anthocyanin-containing extracts isolated from freeze-dried berries to teach students the skills of solid-liquid extraction, paper chromatography, UV-vis spectroscopic characterization, and detection and evaluation of radical scavenging properties.

Abstract

The vision for science teaching in the Framework for K-12 Science Education and the Next Generation Science Standards requires a radical departure from traditional science teaching. Science literacy is defined as three-dimensional (3D), in which students engage in science and engineering practices to develop and apply science disciplinary ideas and crosscutting concepts. This knowledge building presents many challenges for teachers. We describe a two-pronged program for scaling 3D science professional development (PD) across a state: (a) 24 teachers developed expertise in 3D learning and facilitating teacher study groups; (b) these peer facilitators led 22 study groups of teachers in 3D science activities, analyzing student learning, and investigating classroom interactions. We describe design approaches for supporting teacher and facilitator learning. We present analyses of teacher learning, including shifts in 3D science, beliefs, and pedagogical content knowledge that supports 3D science teaching, and consider implications for scalable design approaches for supporting science teacher learning. Abstract

In this article, the author states that because people are willing to kill us just for being Americans, we ought at least to know what being American is. Yet many of our students have been taught painfully little about our nation's history, purposes, or achievements. In America's original founding narrative, faith and reason work together. Both point to liberty as the bright red thread of human history. The author contends that Americans today have lost this intellectual synthesis. It lies broken in fragments upon the ground, like a great mosaic that has fallen from what was once a towering arch above us. That is why the relativism around us has mushroomed. We can no longer defend the truths our founders took to be self-evident, since we have given up the ground our founders stood upon. The author calls for a reckoning as the new century has begun. He states that four lessons were learned during the horrors of the century past, and two of them are especially important for our purposes today: (1) Truth matters. Better than cowardice is fidelity to truth; (2) Vulgar relativism so undermines the culture of liberty that free institutions cannot long survive; (3) The boast of the dictators that dictatorship is better for the people than "decadent democracy" proved to be empty; and (4) The boast that socialism is morally superior to capitalism, and better for the poor, was also empty.
