An accident occurred when an aircraft landed at Narita International Airport, Japan, on 20 June 2012. The aircraft encountered rapid changes of winds together with strong turbulence, although the weather was fair. In the present study, a two‐domain nested regional weather prediction models are used. The results in the outer domain show that southwesterly winds associated with a synoptic extratropical cyclone were locally accelerated to the southwest of the airport resulting in strong vertical shear. The simulation in the inner domain reproduces horizontal convective rolls, which are similar to those observed by a Doppler lidar at the airport. The wind velocity component parallel to the runway had a spatial variation of about 10 m s −1. The present approach using a large eddy simulation is useful for clarifying environments and features of horizontal convective rolls and forecasting low‐level wind shear associated with them, which can be a significant risk for aircraft. Plain Language Summary: Synoptic/mesoscale fronts and downbursts (strong downdrafts from a thunderstorm and diverging winds after they hit the ground) are known to be serious threats to airplanes during takeoff and landing. However, it is less known that there is another type of danger under fair weather conditions. An aircraft landing at Narita International Airport, Japan, in the afternoon of 20 June 2012 encountered rapid changes of wind and turbulence and made a hard landing, resulting in several injuries and damage to the fuselage. A Doppler lidar, a remote sensing device for monitoring low‐level winds at the airport observed alternating regions of strong and weak winds aligned southwest–northeast, perpendicular to the runway. In order to clarify the detailed structure and mechanism of these disturbances, numerical simulations using a fine‐resolution (horizontal resolution: 100 m) nested in a coarse resolution (horizontal resolution: 1 km) are made. The simulations show that horizontal convective rolls, which occur in convective boundary layers with strong vertical shear (vertical gradient of horizontal wind speed) were prevailing. These rolls are associated with the rapid changes in wind speed and turbulence similar to those observed by the Doppler lidar and flight recorder. The present study demonstrates that the large eddy simulation is useful for clarifying the structure and mechanisms of horizontal convective rolls, which caused the aircraft accident, and also for forecasting them. A simple and productive micromachining method of a silica glass using a TEA (transversely excited atmospheric) CO2 laser (10.6 μm) was investigated. A copper grid mask with a thickness of 2 μm, square apertures of 20×20 μm was attached to the silica glass surface, and it was irradiated by the TEA CO2 laser light. As a result, circular holes were formed on the silica glass surface at the center of each aperture in a spatial resolution down to the sub-wavelength scale. The minimum diameter of the hole was less than 3 μm, which is less than one third of the wavelength of the TEA CO2 laser. A depth of the holes ranging from 100 nm to 600 nm could be micromachined on silica glass surface. The mechanism of the micromachining was discussed based on electric field distributions of the CO2 laser light by a 3D full-wave electromagnetic field simulation solver. The simulation results are in good agreement with the experimental results. It was found that the micromachining of the circular holes were caused by Fresnel diffraction of the CO2 laser light at the apertures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Study Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the uptake rates of (18)F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) and (11)C-choline in patients with lung cancer, pulmonary tuberculosis, and atypical mycobacterial infection of the lung by positron emission tomography (PET) scanning with relation to their tumor size.Design: Ninety-seven patients with untreated lung cancer, 14 patients with untreated pulmonary tuberculosis, and 5 patients with untreated atypical mycobacterial infection were examined. The diagnosis of lung cancer was confirmed pathologically after biopsy and surgery. The diagnosis of tuberculosis and atypical mycobacterial infection was confirmed by bacterial culture. The uptake rates of FDG and (11)C-choline were presented quantitatively as the standardized uptake value (SUV).Setting: International Medical Center of Japan.Results: In lung cancer patients, the SUV of FDG increased with increasing tumor size, whereas the SUV of (11)C-choline was almost constant at around 3.5 for every tumor size. In tuberculosis patients, the SUV of FDG increased with increasing tumor size, whereas the SUV of (11)C-choline was almost constant at around 2 for every tumor size. In atypical mycobacterial infection patients, the SUV of FDG and the SUV of (11)C-choline were equally low at around < or = 2.Conclusion: The differences in the SUVs of FDG and (11)C-choline in patients with lung cancer, tuberculosis, and atypical mycobacterial infection for the same tumor size (tumor size, > 1.5 cm) were distinct. In lung cancer patients, the SUVs of both FDG and (11)C-choline were high. In tuberculosis patients, the SUV of FDG was high, but the SUV of (11)C-choline was low. In atypical mycobacterial infection patients, the SUVs of both FDG and (11)C-choline were low. It may be possible to apply this principle to make a presumptive diagnosis of a solitary pulmonary nodule if it is too small to make a definitive diagnosis pathologically and bacteriologically. Initial stage of F2 laser ablation of LiCaAlF6 single crystal was investigated for clarifying the possibility of applying this wide bandgap fluoride crystal to vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) optical components. The ablation threshold, determined by the appearance of line emission from ablated species, was approximately 2 J cm-2pulse-1, similar to that of VUV grade CaF2 single crystal. Abstract Background Experimental studies have revealed that green tea catechins and theanine prevent influenza infection, while the clinical evidence has been inconclusive. This study was conducted to determine whether taking green tea catechins and theanine can clinically prevent influenza infection. Methods Design, Setting, and Participants: A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of 200 healthcare workers conducted for 5 months from November 9, 2009 to April 8, 2010 in three healthcare facilities for the elderly in Higashimurayama, Japan. Interventions: The catechin/theanine group received capsules including green tea catechins (378 mg/day) and theanine (210 mg/day). The control group received placebo. Main Outcome Measures: The primary outcome was the incidence of clinically defined influenza infection. Secondary outcomes were (1) laboratory-confirmed influenza with viral antigen measured by immunochromatographic assay and (2) the time for which the patient was free from clinically defined influenza infection, i.e., the period between the start of intervention and the first diagnosis of influenza infection, based on clinically defined influenza infection. Results Eligible healthcare workers (n = 197) were enrolled and randomly assigned to an intervention; 98 were allocated to receive catechin/theanine capsules and 99 to placebo. The incidence of clinically defined influenza infection was significantly lower in the catechin/theanine group (4 participants; 4.1%) compared with the placebo group (13 participants; 13.1%) (adjusted OR, 0.25; 95% CI, 0.07 to 0.76, P = 0.022). The incidence of laboratory-confirmed influenza infection was also lower in the catechin/theanine group (1 participant; 1.0%) than in the placebo group (5 participants; 5.1%), but this difference was not significant (adjusted OR, 0.17; 95% CI, 0.01 to 1.10; P = 0.112). The time for which the patient was free from clinically defined influenza infection was significantly different between the two groups (adjusted HR, 0.27; 95% CI, 0.09 to 0.84; P = 0.023). Conclusions Among healthcare workers for the elderly, taking green tea catechins and theanine may be effective prophylaxis for influenza infection. Trial Registration ClinicalTrials (NCT): NCT01008020
