Individual variation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis response to stress could contribute to variable stress resiliency of livestock. During stress events, the innate immune system can also become activated and work in concert with the neuroendocrine system to restore homeostasis, while minimizing tissue damage. The purpose of this study was to assess immune function in variable stress-responding sheep in response to bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) endotoxin immune-challenge. High (HSR, n = 12), middle (MSR, n = 12), and low-stress responders (LSR, n = 12) were selected from a population of 112 female lambs and classified based on serum cortisol concentration after receiving an intravenous bolus of LPS (400 ng/kg). Blood was collected from the jugular vein at 0 and 4 hrs post-LPS challenge to monitor changes in serum pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines, and white blood cell populations. Rectal temperature was recorded hourly to monitor fever. HSR had the greatest increase in rectal temperature and strongest pro-inflammatory IL-6 and IFN-γ cytokine responses compared to MSR and LSR. HSR and MSR had stronger anti-inflammatory IL-10 cytokine and CCL2 chemokine responses than LSR. White blood cell counts changed between 0 and 4 h; however, no differences were detected among the variable stress response groups. The distinct inflammatory response in variable stress responding sheep could contribute to individual differences in stress resiliency and this warrants investigation in the context of other types of stress. Acute inflammation was studied in sheep stress-phenotyped using bacterial lipopolysaccharide. Sheep selected based on stress responsiveness (i.e. serum cortisol concentration) have different immune responses to bacterial stress. The design of cryogenic, scanning Fabry-Perot interferometers for the Long-Wavelength Spectrometer on the ESA Infrared Space Observatory is presented. The interferometers were designed to provide a spectral resolving power of [10.sup.4] over the wavelength range 45-180 [[micro]meter], with the highest possible transmission efficiency consistent with this requirement. Metal meshes, custom designed with the aid of a theoretical model of metallic reflection, were used as the reflecting elements. The scanning mechanism featured a spring-suspended plate, which was servocontrolled by moving coil actuators and monitored by capacitance micrometers. The spectroscopic performance of the interferometers was measured in the laboratory and is compared with the model developed for the interferometer design. Although the measured resolving powers were somewhat lower than expected because of the laboratory measurement conditions, the transmission efficiencies were in approximate agreement with the design specification. Experimental measurements and data correlations for the divided channel obtained in part I of the experimental study are analyzed in the second part. Interferometric study was conducted on two-dimensional laminar natural convection heat transfer in an isothermal vertical divided channel. Interferograms were arrived at for air, and a plate-to-channel length ratio of Lp/Lc=1/3. Comparative studies of local and average Nusselt numbers with the numerical predictions from part I show that although the average Nusselt numbers are 10 percent lower than the numerical results, the general trends of the data are in accordance with each other.

A two-part study of two-dimensional laminar natural convection heat transfer in a divided vertical channel examines the effect of Rayleigh number, plate-to-channel length ratio, vertical plate position, and plate thickness on the heat transfer rate form the channel walls, the dividing plate and the channel as a whole. Part I answers the full elliptic and parabolic forms of the Navier-Stokes. Energy equations for Prandtl number Pr=0.7 are also obtained.

The European Space Agency Herschel Spectral and Photometric Imaging Receiver (SPIRE) Fourier Transform Spectrometer (FTS) Spectral Feature Finder (FF) project is an automated spectral feature fitting routine developed within the SPIRE instrument team to extract all prominent spectral features from all publicly available SPIRE FTS observations. We present the extension of the FF to include the off-axis detectors of the FTS in sparsely sampled single-pointing observations, the results of which have been ingested into the catalogue. We also present the results from an automated routine for identifications of the atomic/molecular transitions that correspond to the spectral features extracted by the FF. We use a template of 307 atomic fine structure and molecular lines that are commonly found in SPIRE FTS spectra for the cross-match. The routine makes use of information provided by the line identification to search for low signal-to-noise ratio features that have been excluded or missed by the iterative FF. In total, the atomic/molecular transitions of 178 942 lines are identified (corresponding to 83 per cent of the entire FF catalogue), and an additional 33 840 spectral lines associated with missing features from SPIRE FTS observations are added to the FF catalogue. We provide a detailed description of the Herschel /SPIRE Fourier Transform Spectrometer (FTS) Spectral Feature Finder (FF). The FF is an automated process designed to extract significant spectral features from SPIRE FTS data products. Optimizing the number of features found in SPIRE-FTS spectra is challenging. The wide SPIRE-FTS frequency range (447–1568 GHz) leads to many molecular species and atomic fine structure lines falling within the observed bands. As the best spectral resolution of the SPIRE-FTS is ∼1.2 GHz, there can be significant line blending, depending on the source type. In order to find, both efficiently and reliably, features in spectra associated with a wide range of sources, the FF iteratively searches for peaks over a number of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) thresholds. For each threshold, newly identified features are rigorously checked before being added to the fitting model. At the end of each iteration, the FF simultaneously fits the continuum and features found, with the resulting residual spectrum used in the next iteration. The final FF products report the frequency of the features found and the associated SNRs. Line flux determination is not included as part of the FF products, as extracting reliable line flux from SPIRE-FTS data is a complex process that requires careful evaluation and analysis of the spectra on a case-by-case basis. The FF results are 100 per cent complete for features with SNR greater than 10 and 50–70 per cent complete at SNR of 5. Breeding stress-resilient livestock is a potential strategy to help mitigate the negative effect of environmental and pathogenic stressors. The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and immune system are activated during stress events and release mediators into the circulation that help restore physiological homeostasis. The purpose of this study was to assess a comprehensive set of circulatory mediators released in response to an acute immune stress challenge to identify candidate biomarkers that can be used for the selection of stress-resilient animals. Fifteen female lambs were stress challenged with an intravenous bolus of lipopolysaccharide (LPS; 400 ng/kg), and blood was collected from the jugular vein at 0, 2, 4, and 6 h after LPS challenge to identify and monitor candidate stress biomarkers; temperature was also recorded over time. Biomarker responses were evaluated with a repeated-measures model to compare time points with baseline values. As expected, all sheep had a monophasic febrile response to LPS challenge, and cortisol increased and returned to baseline by 6 h. The cytokines tumor necrosis factor-α, IL-6, IFN-γ (proinflammatory), and IL-10 (anti-inflammatory) increased, but only tumor necrosis factor-α returned to baseline during the monitoring period. The cytokines IL-1α, IL-1β, IL-17α (proinflammatory), and IL-4 (anti-inflammatory) did not respond to LPS challenge. All chemokines (CCL2, CCL3, CCL4, CXCL10, and IL-8) responded to LPS challenge; however, only CCL2, CCL3, CCL4, and CXCL10 increased over time, and only CCL3, CCL4, and CXCL10 returned to baseline during the monitoring period. MicroRNA (miR-145, miR-233, and miR-1246) also increased and remained elevated during the study. In summary, the LPS challenge induced a strong stress response in Rideau-Dorset sheep that could be monitored with a distinct profile of circulatory biomarkers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The influence of the angle of inclination on the spontaneous convection heat transfer from an isothermal channel is studied. An increase in the angle of inclination leads to a decrease in the overall heat transfer, which is proportional to the angle of inclination. There is no significant asymmetric heat transfer along each wall in the range of parameters studied.
