We develop an economic model to derive the conditions under which individuals will invest in human capital and move on to adopt sustainable technology instead of natural resource intensive technology. For this purpose, we extend the overlapping generation model developed by Ikefuji & Horii as our analytical framework. Unlike Ikefuji & Horii who developed an overlapping generation model (OLG) in the context of local pollution, the authors adopted it in the context of renewable natural resources. To do this, we have introduced the production sector that relies on natural resource-intensive technology. This research extends beyond the Ikefuji & Horii model by assuming that an individual derives utility by investing in his child’s education apart from utility derived from consumption when young and adult. Human capital accumulation enables individuals to participate in human capital-intensive production, which produces output through sustainable production technology. As the main result of our theoretical analysis, we find that more educated individual is less dependent on the natural resource endowment for earning their income. We also find that sustainable consumption growth requires that individuals assign a certain positive weight to investment in their child’s education. A long-run steady-state equilibrium level of human capital accumulation is higher and higher than the weight assigned by the parents to the child’s education. In this overlapping generation’s economy, sustainable consumption growth requires that individuals assign a certain weight or give some importance to human capital accumulation. Environmental degradation of the oil-rich Niger Delta region has been wanton and continuous with dire health, social and economic consequences for its peoples, for over three decades. Using a sample of 262 crop farmers drawn randomly from 10 communities and 5 LGAs in the oil producing agro-ecological zones of Delta State, the negative impact of oil spill on crop production was accentuated. Oil spill reduced crop yield, land productivity and greatly depressed farm income as a 10 percentage increase in oil spill reduced crop yield by 1.3 percent while farm income plummeted by 5 percent. In order to halt the continual degradation of the Niger Delta environment, the authors recommend the enactment and enforcement of stringent environmental laws to protect the area as well as the implementation of policies to reduce the crushing level of poverty and guarantee a better livelihood for the people.

Enormous change has been observed since Self-help Groups (SHGs) were initiated and after their members started patrolling the forests to restrict illegal stem cutting, grazing, and other natural resource degradation process. In this paper, we demonstrate how the rural women pool money and run a microfinance system to tide over temporary financial stringencies arising from time to time. They conduct a cross section of economic activities such as community horticulture, provision shop, running pig farms, making household utensils, and door-to-door vending of essential household items. They are instrumental in sorting out inter-family and intra-family disputes. All their functions have now been institutionalised through SHGs. The sanctuary has also benefited by the formation of SHGs. The Ecodevelopment Committees (EDCs) and SHGs stand as a social fence along the fringes. The most remarkable thing is that the SHGs have formed a separate women's group for patrolling in the forest. This special group is called ‘Vasantha Sena’ (Green Force). A group of six to eight women patrol everyday from 11 am to 5 pm in the forest voluntarily, without claiming any form of remuneration. Their presence in the forest during daytime not only discourages illegal entry but also controls biomass extraction. The Peruvian altiplano is a marginal agricultural region with limited infrastructure, climate constraints, and high levels of poverty. Data were collected from 265 farms in four different agricultural regions, and data from three of those regions are analyzed here. Regressions were run with soil nutrient loss, soil depth loss, and yield loss over the past 20 years, as perceived by farmers. Location, topographical and management factors were considered. Additional regressions were run to examine the determinants of two agricultural management practices which were found to affect soil quality, namely fallowing and ploughing vertical furrows. Use of traditional fallowing (aynoca) was associated with helping to preserve soil quality, and was practiced by households with more education, with higher non-farm income, and in villages which had benefitted from natural resource development projects. Vertical furrowing similarly was associated with helping preserve soil quality, and was practiced by households with fewer unmet basic needs. Management of natural resources is pivotal for sustained economic growth—the increasing ecological footprints causing biocapacity deficit threaten the resource conversation agenda. The study identified the potential causes and consequences of natural resource depletion in a broad cross-section of 138 countries. Ecological footprints, international migrant stocks, industrial value-added, and population growth influenced natural resource capital across countries. The results show that ecological footprints, industrial value-added, and population growth are the detrimental factors of resource capital. In contrast, continued economic growth is helpful to conserve natural resources for future generations. The rise and fall in the natural resource degradation are evident in the wake of international migrants' stocks to support an inverted U-shaped relationship between them. The Granger causality inferences confirmed the one-way linkages, running from international migrant stocks, economic growth, and population growth to natural resource degradation. It verifies migrants-led, affluence-led, and population-led resource degradation. Ecological footprints Granger causes industrial value-added across countries. The forecasting estimates suggested that economic growth would likely to influenced greater in magnitude to resource degradation by its innovation shocks of 4.791%, followed by international migrant stocks, population growth, ecological footprints, and industrial value added by their innovation shocks of 4.709%, 1.829%, 1.247%, and 0.700%, respectively. The study concludes that international migrant stocks should manage smartly, causing more resource degradation via a channel of increasing biocapacity deficit across countries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
