Reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions urgently requires the large-scale deployment of carbon-capture technologies. These technologies must separate CO2 from various sources and deliver it to different sinks1,2. The quest for optimal solutions for specific source-sink pairs is a complex, multi-objective challenge involving multiple stakeholders and depends on social, economic and regional contexts. Currently, research follows a sequential approach: chemists focus on materials design3 and engineers on optimizing processes4,5, which are then operated at a scale that impacts the economy and the environment. Assessing these impacts, such as the greenhouse gas emissions over the plant's lifetime, is typically one of the final steps6. Here we introduce the PrISMa (Process-Informed design of tailor-made Sorbent Materials) platform, which integrates materials, process design, techno-economics and life-cycle assessment. We compare more than 60 case studies capturing CO2 from various sources in 5 global regions using different technologies. The platform simultaneously informs various stakeholders about the cost-effectiveness of technologies, process configurations and locations, reveals the molecular characteristics of the top-performing sorbents, and provides insights on environmental impacts, co-benefits and trade-offs. By uniting stakeholders at an early research stage, PrISMa accelerates carbon-capture technology development during this critical period as we aim for a net-zero world.

The rapid development of e-learning in higher education institutions has facilitated personalized learning pathways for learning to be relevant, catering to the individual learners' needs and expectations. In spite of the vast opportunities that e-learning offers, the online courses in distance language education in Iran failed to satisfactorily engage students. There is little effort to empower and give voice to students to improve instruction. Therefore, the aim of the study was to explore the needs and expectations of EFL students enrolled in online English courses at a distance learning institution. The study also examined the students' perceptions for a learner-centred approach, using personalized learning (PL) in their online English courses. A total of 200 students participated in the survey and five of them were invited to be interviewed. The study explored the issues in the existing online English courses, the students' expectations of an English course and their perceptions towards a PL approach for their online English courses. The results revealed the EFL students needed more support, multimedia learning resources, opportunities to practice speaking and listening, and a friendly communicative environment. The findings indicated that most students had positive perceptions on PL. The study suggested that distance education systems need to incorporate PL into online courses as a solution to address the students' learning needs.

Abstract Low organic matter content is one of the main constraints in arid and semiarid regions. This constraint and its negative influences on soils and plant growth may be alleviated by biochar (BC). Furthermore, improving soil physical and hydraulic attributes by application of biochar has received increased attention. Therefore, in the present study, the effects of sugarcane bagasse-derived biochar on the structural stability, water availability, and pore-size distribution (PSD) of three texturally different calcareous soils collected from different agro-climatologically regions were examined during a long-term experiment. Low and high-temperature biochars, produced in a muffle furnace by the traditional slow pyrolysis method at 300 °C (BC300) and 600 °C (BC600) were evaluated. Pots (15 kg) were filled with three different silty-clay Inceptisols (SCInc), silty-clay-loam Alfisols (SCLAlf), and loam Aridisols (LArid) soils mixed with 0 (control), 1, 2, and 3 w/w% of BC300 and BC600 during 540 days of incubation. The high energy moisture characteristic (HEMC) data was modeled using a modified van Genuchten function to quantify aggregate stability through stability ratio (SR) and structural stability index (SSI). Abstract Introduction Clinical dishonesty is one of the components of academic dishonesty that deals with the unprofessional behavior of students in hospital and clinic environments (medical students, nursing students, etc.). Psychological distress and low moral intelligence among students can be known as predisposing factors in performing dishonest clinical behaviors. The present research addresses a gap in the scientific literature by investigating dishonest behavior among medical students. Methods This cross-sectional study examined medical students’ clinical dishonesty, psychological distress, and moral intelligence. Rafati et al.‘s questionnaire was used to investigate clinical dishonesty, Kessler’s Psychological Distress Questionnaire (K6) was used for psychological distress, and Lenik and Keil’s (2005) questionnaire was used to determine moral intelligence. Cochran’s formula was used to calculate the sample size and the simple random sample (SRS) method was used for sampling. Data were statistically analyzed in SPSS version 27 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, United States). a P-value less than 0.05 was considered significant. Results 317 medical students were included in this study, of which 176 (55.5%) were male and 141 (44.5%) were female. Abstract Background Evidence-based medicine is defined as searching for medical information, reviewing and comparing it to each patient’s situation, and then judging the optimal decision. We aimed to measure the psychometric properties of the Evidence-Based Performance Profile (EBP2) Questionnaire among the students of health-related fields at Shiraz University of Medical Sciences. Methods This cross-sectional study was conducted in 2021. The EBP2 questionnaire, which includes 74 five-Likert-scale items, was translated into the Persian language using the forward-backward translation method. A panel of five experts approved the face, content, and structural validity of the questionnaire. The Cronbach’s alpha and McDonald’s Omega coefficients were utilized to assess the questionnaire’s internal consistency. Furthermore, both confirmatory and exploratory factor analyses were used to assess the questionnaire’s construct validity. SPSS software version 25 and LISREL software version 8.8 were used for statistical analysis. Results Overall, 339 students participated in this study. The cultural adaptability, linguistic equivalence, and content validity of the Persian version of the EBP2 questionnaire were approved by a five-member team of medical experts. In addition, the results showed excellent internal consistency of the Persian version of the EBP2 questionnaire (Cronbach’s alpha = 0.962, McDonald’s Omega (ML) = 0.963). Moreover, all domains had acceptable reliability (> 0.7), except the Practice domain which had a marginally acceptable Cronbach’s alpha coefficient equal to 0.686. Exploratory factor analysis discovered six domains for the questionnaire. Moreover, the confirmatory factor analysis demonstrated that all indices except the comparative fit index (CFI) and adjusted goodness of fit (AGFI) confirmed the validity of the EBP2 questionnaire. Conclusion The study’s findings indicate that the Persian translated of the EBP2 questionnaire exhibited satisfactory validity and reliability for assessing students’ evidence-based performance in health-related fields.

Abstract Background The educational environment plays a critical role in shaping learners’ perceptions and experiences in medical education. Evaluating and enhancing the quality of this environment is essential for the continuous improvement of medical training programs. The Scan of the Postgraduate Educational Environment Domains (SPEED) is a concise instrument that assesses three domains of the educational environment. This study aimed to translate the SPEED questionnaire into Persian and evaluate its validity and reliability in the context of postgraduate. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted with 200 first and second-year medical residents. The Persian translation of the SPEED questionnaire was assessed for content validity, and confirmatory factor analysis was performed to evaluate its structural validity. Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was calculated to assess internal consistency reliability. Results The Persian-translated SPEED questionnaire demonstrated satisfactory content validity, with all items exceeding the minimum acceptable values for content validity ratio and index. Confirmatory factor analysis indicated an acceptable fit for the 3-dimensional structure of the SPEED instrument. Internal consistency reliability analysis showed high reliability for the content, atmosphere, and organization domains. Conclusion The Persian-translated version of the SPEED questionnaire is a valid and reliable tool for assessing the domains of the educational environment in postgraduate medical education.

Abstract Lung ischemia-reperfusion injury (LIRI) causes oxidative stress, inflammation, and immune system activation. The Nrf2/Keap1/HO-1 pathway is important in cellular defense against these effects. Quercetin, a flavonoid with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-cancer properties, has been investigated. Our aim in this study was to investigate the effect of quercetin on preventing lung ischemia-reperfusion injury and the role of the Nrf2/Keap1/HO-1 pathway. Sixty-four male Wistar rats were divided into four distinct groups(n = 16). Sham, lung ischemia-reperfusion (LIR), Saline + LIR, Quercetin + LIR (30 mg/kg i.p for a week before LIR). LIR groups were subjected to 60 min of ischemia (left pulmonary artery, vein, and bronchus) and 120 min of reperfusion. Our assessment encompassed a comprehensive analysis of various factors, including the evaluation of expression Nrf2, Keap1, and Heme Oxygenase-1 (HO-1) levels and NF-κB protein. Furthermore, we examined markers related to inflammation (interleukin-1β and tumor necrosis factor alpha), oxidative stress (malondialdehyde, total oxidant status, superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, total antioxidant capacity), lung edema (Wet/dry lung weight ratio and total protein concentration), apoptosis (Bax and Bcl2 protein), and histopathological alterations (intra-alveolar edema, alveolar hemorrhage, and neutrophil infiltration). Our results show that ischemia-reperfusion results in heightened inflammation, oxidative stress, apoptosis, lung edema, and histopathological damage. Quercetin showed preventive effects by reducing these markers, acting through modulation of the Nrf2/Keap1 pathway and inhibiting the NF-κB pathway. This anti-inflammatory effect, complementary to the antioxidant effects of quercetin, provides a multifaceted approach to cell protection that is important for developing therapeutic strategies against ischemia-reperfusion injury and could be helpful in preventive strategies against ischemia-reperfusion.

Abstract Background This study aimed to examine the status of performance indicators in hospitals affiliated with Qazvin University of Medical Sciences (QUMS) before and after the implementation of the Health Transformation Plan (HTP). Methods This longitudinal descriptive-analytical study was conducted utilizing hospital data. The study collected data using a checklist that included both general characteristics of the participating hospitals and performance indicators such as “the number of outpatient visits,” “the number of paraclinical patients,” “the number of surgeries,” and “the number of inpatients” on a monthly basis for 2012–2019. The intervention examined in this study was the implementation of the HTP in May 2014. The data collected was analyzed using interrupted time series and STATA statistical software version 15. Results The study examined seven hospitals affiliated with QUMS, including general, trauma, pediatric, gynecology, and psychiatry hospitals. The findings indicated a significant increase in outpatient visits, paraclinical patients, and inpatients in the first month after the intervention. Introduction: Treatment of municipal wastewater is essential to remove bacteria. This study is designed to evaluate the efficacy of a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) for the removal of bacteria and using for irrigation or discharge in the Caspian Sea according to the World Health Organization (WHO) regulations. Materials and Methods: A total of 105 samples were collected from 7 stations, including the inlet and the outlet of the WWTP in Bandargaz City (Iran), the intersection point of wastewater effluent with Caspian Sea (Gorgan Bay), and a radius of 200 meters in three directions east, west, and north of the intersection point of wastewater in Gorgan Bay. The multiple-tube fermentation technique was used to enumerate bacteria, and results were expressed as the Most Probable Number (MPN) per 100 ml. Results: Bacteriological analysis exhibited that the concentration of total coliform, fecal coliform, fecal streptococci, and Clostridium perfringens were 1.38 ×1010, 5.57 × 107, 5.53 × 109, 1.26 × 109 in inlet, and 1.38 × 1010 , 5.57 × 107, 5.53 × 109 , 1.26 × 109 in outlet of WWTP, respectively. Conclusion: The aeration lagoon has a low performance in bacteria population removal, which may be due to the climate condition of this region (few sunny days and many cloudy and rainy days). This effluent was not generally acceptable for discharge in the environment and reuse. Therefore, it is essential to modify the disinfection process to keep the concentration of bacteria under control. Additionally, continuous monitoring is necessary to control the quality of wastewater before discharge into the environment or reuse.

In this investigation, two passes Constrained Groove Pressed (CGPed) Al1050 sheets went through Friction Stir Welding (FSW) by adding nano-sized Al2O3 particles. Then, the microstructure and mechanical properties of the welded joints, undergone various pass numbers and rotational to traverse speed (ω/ν) ratios, were presented. Findings showed all joints were fractured from the SZ, although HAZ softening happened due to grain growth in this region. The presence of the Al2O3 particles in the stir zone led to a fine and equiaxed grain structure, resulting from continuous dynamic recrystallization (CDRX) during the high-temperature welding process. This grain refinement contributed to an improvement in the mechanical properties of the joints, such as strength and microhardness. Employing two different ω/ν ratios resulted in a variety of thermal cycles during the welding procedure such that the peak temperature in the ω/ν of 70 and 25 r/mm reached ∼423 °C and ∼285 °C, respectively. Microstructure studies via optical observation and EBSD analysis illustrated that employing a higher ω/ν ratio and weld pass number resulted in more uniform particle distribution in the stir zone thanks to facilitating materials flow and incorporation during FSW. As a result, the three passes FSWed sample at the higher ω/ν ratio of 70 r/mm showed the most homogeneous particle distribution and finest grain structure in the SZ. This microstructure evolution was in reliable agreement with the mechanical performance of the joints. The three passes FSWed sample at the higher ω/ν ratio of 70 r/mm demonstrated the highest weld strength, microhardness, and %elongation compared to other FSWed joints. This sample showed an ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of ∼97 MPa and a %elongation of ∼16%, and its mean microhardness value had a ∼3.5% increase compared to the CGPed base metal. Conversely, the one pass FSWed sample at the lower ω/ν ratio of 25 r/mm represented the weakest mechanical properties due to cavities, defects, and agglomerated Al2O3 nanoparticles. The presence of nanoparticles was a decisive factor in microstructural evolution during the welding, thereby increasing the mechanical quality of the joints dependent upon their uniform dispersion, obtained by increasing the pass number and ω/ν ratio.
