14. Effects of incubation temperature on hatchling performance and phenotype in loggerhead sea turtle Caretta caretta

Abstract

Under natural conditions sea turtle eggs are subjected to a changing thermal environment, but little is known about the effect of these temperature fluctuations during incubation on the performance and phenotype of hatchlings. The aim of this study was to determine how incubation temperature pattern (increasing or stable) and incubation temperature regime (low or high) affect incubation and hatching duration, hatching and emergence success, hatchling phenotype (carapace length and weight) and self-righting interval at hatching. Loggerhead sea turtle Caretta caretta (Linnaeus, 1758) clutches were collected at different beaches on the Cape Verde archipelago and divided among incubators with different temperature regimes and patterns. Minimum straight carapace length and weight of all individuals were measured at hatching. In addition, the hatching duration and the time interval required for each hatchling to self-right were recorded. Results showed that incubation temperature regimes influenced all studied parameters more than the increasing temperature pattern. Low incubation temperature regimes, both in the increasing and stable pattern, increased the incubation time, produced bigger hatchlings and caused a slower righting response compared to the high temperature regimes. An optimal range of incubation temperatures was determined by assessing the most favorable values for hatchlings, although some differences were found in the higher temperatures of this optimal range between different rookeries. This means that turtle incubation in the laboratory should, as far as possible, follow the natural incubation temperature fluctuation of the studied rookery.

Abstract

Se presenta el caso clínico de una mujer de 33 años con una leiomiomatosis peritoneal diseminada (LPD) diagnosticada durante cirugía por tumor anexial. Al siguiente año se embaraza. Durante la cesárea efectuada a las 38 semanas, se observa una exacerbación de la enfermedad con sospecha de malignización por lo que se efectúa una histerectomía total más salpingooforectomía bilateral y resección de sólo algunos nodulos de la cavidad abdominal. La biopsia diferida confirma el diagnóstico de LPD. A la fecha completó 8 años de seguimiento sin evidencias clínicas ni imágenes de persistencia.We report the clinical case of 33 years-old woman with leiomyomatosis peritonealis disseminata (LPD) whose diagnosis becomes evident during a surgery for adnexal tumor. The next year she gets pregnant. During the cesarean section performed at 38 weeks' gestation, it is observed a disease exacerbation with malignant characteristics. Because of that, a total hysterectomy takes place. It is performed a bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy and resection of only some nodules of the abdominal cavity. The deferred biopsy confirms the LPD diagnosis. By this time she has completed 8 years of clinical follow-up without clinical evidences or images of persistence.

Abstract

Aims: To describe and compare the adherence to different direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) in eight European databases representing six countries. Methods: Longitudinal drug utilization study of new users (≥18 years) of DOACs (dabigatran, rivaroxaban, apixaban) with a diagnosis of non-valvular atrial fibrillation (2008–2015). Adherence was examined by estimating persistence, switching, and discontinuation rates at 12 months. Primary non-adherence was estimated in BIFAP and SIDIAP databases. Results: The highest persistence rate was seen for apixaban in the CPRD database (81%) and the lowest for dabigatran in the Mondriaan database (22%). The switching rate for all DOACs ranged from 2.4 to 13.1% (Mondriaan and EGB databases, respectively). Dabigatran had the highest switching rate from 5.0 to 20.0% (Mondriaan and EGB databases, respectively). The discontinuation rate for all DOACs ranged from 16.0 to 63.9% (CPRD and Bavarian CD databases, respectively). Dabigatran had the highest rate of discontinuers, except in the Bavarian CD and AOK NORDWEST databases, ranging from 23.2 to 64.6% (CPRD and Mondriaan databases, respectively). Combined primary non-adherence for examined DOACs was 11.1% in BIFAP and 14.0% in SIDIAP. There were differences in population coverage and in the type of drug data source among the databases. Conclusion: Despite the differences in the characteristics of the databases and in demographic and baseline characteristics of the included population that could explain some of the observed discrepancies, we can observe a similar pattern throughout the databases. Apixaban was the DOAC with the highest persistence. Dabigatran had the highest proportion of discontinuers and switchers at 12 months in most databases (EMA/2015/27/PH). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The energy levels created in supersaturated n-type silicon substrates with titanium implantation in the attempt to create an intermediate band in their band-gap are studied in detail. Two titanium ion implantation doses (1013cm-2 and 1014cm-2) are studied in this work by conductance transient technique and admittance spectroscopy. Conductance transients have been measured at temperatures of around 100 K. The particular shape of these transients is due to the formation of energy barriers in the conduction band, as a consequence of the band-gap narrowing induced by the high titanium concentration. Moreover, stationary admittance spectroscopy results suggest the existence of different energy level configuration, depending on the local titanium concentration. A continuum energy level band is formed when titanium concentration is over the Mott limit. On the other hand, when titanium concentration is lower than the Mott limit, but much higher than the donor impurity density, a quasi-continuum energy level distribution appears. Finally, a single deep center appears for low titanium concentration. At the n-type substrate, the experimental results obtained by means of thermal admittance spectroscopy at high reverse bias reveal the presence of single levels located at around Ec-425 and Ec-275 meV for implantation doses of 1013cm-2 and 1014cm-2, respectively. At low reverse bias voltage, quasi-continuously distributed energy levels between the minimum of the conduction bands, Ec and Ec-450 meV, are obtained for both doses. Conductance transients detected at low temperatures reveal that the high impurity concentration induces a band gap narrowing which leads to the formation of a barrier in the conduction band. Besides, the relationship between the activation energy and the capture cross section values of all the energy levels fits very well to the Meyer-Neldel rule. As it is known, the Meyer-Neldel rule typically appears in processes involving multiple excitations, like carrier capture and emission in deep levels, and it is generally observed in disordered systems. The obtained Meyer-Neldel energy value, 15.19 meV, is very close to the value obtained in multicrystalline silicon samples contaminated with iron (13.65 meV), meaning that this energy value could be associated to the phonons energy in this kind of substrates.
