Lorenzo Montanaro, Davide Treré, Massimo Derenzini Department of Experimental, Diagnostic and Specialty Medicine, Alma Mater Studiorum, University of Bologna, Bologna, Italy Abstract: Ribosome biogenesis – the complex and highly coordinated cellular process leading to the production of ribosomes – is strictly dependent on the activity of RNA polymerase I (Pol I) transcriptional machinery. Pol I activity is continually increased in proliferating cells to sustain the increased demand for ribosome production and protein synthesis, which are necessary for appropriate cell growth and division. The integrity of the process of ribosome biogenesis represents an important sensor of cellular stress: when this process is altered, a tumor suppressor response is triggered, which leads to proliferative arrest. The present review focuses on the possible implications of Pol I targeting in the treatment of human malignancies. Abstract

Byline: V. Cannillo, P. Palmero, T. Manfredini, L. Montanaro Al2O3/YAG composite powders have been synthesised by reverse strike precipitation. The powders were characterised by DTA/TG simultaneous analysis; the phase evolution was studied by XRD analysis, while the crystallite formation and growth were followed by TEM observations. A fully dense, homogenous material was obtained by sintering 900[degrees]C pre-treated powders at 1600[degrees]C for 3 h. For limiting grain growth, both a doping with 500 ppm MgO followed by a free sintering and a fast sintering procedure involving a high heating rate (50[degrees]C/min) were performed. The sintered bodies were then characterised by SEM observation and Vickers indentation. Moreover, a numerical model was employed in order to estimate the mechanical properties of the composite materials starting from their microstructural features and from the single constituent phase properties.
