This study focuses on identifying personality traits in computer science students and determining whether they are related to academic performance. In addition, the importance of the personality traits based on motivation scale and depression, anxiety, and stress scales were measured. A sample of 188 students from the Computer Engineering Schools of the Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaíso was used. Through econometric two-stage least squares and paired sample correlation analysis, the results obtained indicate that there is a relation between academic performance and the personality traits measured by educational motivation scale and the ranking of university entrance and gender. In addition, these results led to characterization of students based on their personality traits and provided elements that may enhance the development of an effective personality that allows students to successfully face their environment, playing an important role in the educational process. Satisfiability modulo theory (SMT) solving strategies are composed of various components and parameters that can dramatically affect the performance of an SMT solver. Each of these elements includes a huge amount of options that cannot be exploited without expert knowledge. In this work, we analyze separately the different strategy components of the Z3 theorem prover, which is one of the most important solvers of the SMT community. We propose some rules for modifying components, parameters, and structures of solving strategies. Using these rules inside different engines leads to an automated strategy learning process which does not require any end‐user expert knowledge to generate optimized strategies. Our algorithms and rules are validated by optimizing some solving strategies for some selected SMT logics. These strategies are then tested for solving some SMT library benchmarks issued from the SMT competitions. The strategies we automatically generated turn out to be very efficient. Constraint Satisfaction Problems allow one to expressively model problems. On the other hand, propositional satisfiability problem (SAT) solvers can handle huge SAT instances. We thus present a technique to expressively model set constraint problems and to encode them automatically into SAT instances. Our technique is expressive and less error-prone. Constraint programming effectively solves constraint satisfaction and optimization problems by basically building, pruning, and exploring a search tree of potential solutions. In this context, a main component is the enumeration strategy, which is responsible for selecting the order in which variables and values are selected to build a possible solution. This process is known to be quite important; indeed a correct selection can reach a solution without failed explorations. However, it is well known that selecting the right strategy is quite challenging as their performance is notably hard to predict. During the last years, adaptive enumeration appeared as a proper solution to this problem. Adaptive enumeration allows the solving algorithm being able to autonomously modifying its strategies in solving time depending on performance information. In this way, the most suitable order for variables and values is employed along the search. In this paper, we present a new and more lightweight approach for performing adaptive enumeration. We incorporate a powerful classification technique named Top-k in order to adaptively select strategies along the resolution. We report results on a set of well-known benchmarks where the proposed approach noticeably competes with classical and modern adaptive enumeration methods for constraint satisfaction. The Sudoku is a famous logic-placement game, originally popularized in Japan and today widely employed as pastime and as testbed for search algorithms.The classic Sudoku consists in filling a 9 × 9 grid, divided into nine 3 × 3 regions, so that each column, row, and region contains different digits from 1 to 9. This game is known to be NP-complete, with existing various complete and incomplete search algorithms able to solve different instances of it. In this paper, we present a new cuckoo search algorithmfor solving Sudoku puzzles combining prefiltering phases and geometric operations. The geometric operators allow one to correctly move toward promising regions of the combinatorial space, while the prefiltering phases are able to previously delete from domains the values that do not conduct to any feasible solution. This integration leads to a more efficient domain filtering and as a consequence to a faster solving process. We illustrate encouraging experimental results where our approach noticeably competes with the best approximate methods reported in the literature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In Castro et al. [Castro, C., Monfroy, E., Figueroa, C., and Meneses, R. (2005), ‘An Approach for Dynamic Split Strategies in Constraint Solving’, inProceedings of MICAI 2005(Vol. 3789), LNAI, Berlin: Springer, pp. 162–174] a framework for adaptive enumeration strategies and meta-backtracks for a propagation-based constraint solver has been studied. Here, we extend this framework in order to trigger some functions of a solver, or of a hybrid solver to respond to some observations of the solving process. We can also simply design adaptive hybridisation strategies by just changing some rules of the update component of our framework. We experiment with this framework on a hybrid Branch and Bound + propagation solver in which propagation can be triggered w.r.t. some observations of the solving process. The results show that some phases of propagation are not only beneficial to the Branch and Bound algorithm, but also that propagation is too costly to be executed at each node of the search tree. Subset problems (set partitioning, packing, and covering) are formal models for many practical optimization problems. A set partitioning problem determines how the items in one set (S) can be partitioned into smaller subsets. All items in S must be contained in one and only one partition. Related problems are set packing (all itemsmust be contained in zero or one partitions) and set covering (all itemsmust be contained in at least one partition).Here, we present a hybrid solver based on ant colony optimization (ACO) combined with arc consistency for solving this kind of problems. ACO is a swarm intelligence metaheuristic inspired on ants behavior when they search for food. It allows to solve complex combinatorial problems for which traditional mathematical techniques may fail. By other side, in constraint programming, the solving process of Constraint Satisfaction Problems can dramatically reduce the search space by means of arc consistency enforcing constraint consistencies either prior to or during search. Our hybrid approach was tested with set covering and set partitioning dataset benchmarks. Metaheuristics are solution methods which combine local improvement procedures and higher level strategies for solving combinatorial and nonlinear optimization problems. In general, metaheuristics require an important amount of effort focused on parameter setting to improve its performance. In this work a 2-level metaheuristic approach is proposed so that Scatter Search and Ant Colony Optimization act as "low level" metaheuristics, whose parameters are set by a "higher level" Genetic Algorithm during execution, seeking to improve the performance and to reduce the maintenance. This article is concerned with two styles of programming: constraint programming and the one employed in coordination languages. A generic framework for constraint propagation is presented using coordination languages. More precisely, concern is with the realization of a control-driven coordination-based version of the generic iteration algorithm for compound domains of K. R. Apt. The goal is to describe constraint propagation as the coordination of cooperative agents, and thus, to provide a flexible, scalable, and generic framework for constraint propagation. Our framework overcomes inherent problems of the parallel and distributed algorithms of E. Monfroy and J.-H. Réty. Other benefits of this coordination based framework is that it does not require special modeling of CSPs and opens up ways for new constraint propagation strategies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
