Search

Retrospection and transformation of the phenomena of criticism and crisis in social theory in recent decades have led to the weakening and even “illegitimate” renunciation of the said doublet. The paper presents an analysis of the renewal of discourse on criticism/crisis and its effects with special consideration of the possibilities of structural criticism. We included several authors of recent analyses as well as the viewpoints that have led to reconsideration of historical and analytical dynamics of two categories, structure and conjuncture, as a form of analysis of current structural processes in terms of structural analysis and criticism. The paper comprises three parts. The first part is a reflection on the reason criticism and crisis have been subjected to different processes of derogation despite their original connection. In the second part, we show the effects of different ways that crisis has manifested itself in capitalism and explain its dispersive and “non-punctual” modalities. The third part raises the question of chances of reuniting the crisis and “immanent criticism” based on structural criticism, and we further articulate its connections with immanent criticism. Structural criticism is viewed as a connection between immanent criticism and transcendent orientation that is focused on the reconnection between crisis and criticism, the elements related to capitalism.

This paper deals with the problematization of emotions within the systems theory in sociology, with special reference to Talcott Parsons and Niklas Luhmann. After considering the ambivalent interrelation of (studying) emotions and sociology, as well as the basic postulates of systems theory, we offer a (re)interpretation of the role and place of emotions within this theoretical tradition. It is argued that emotions as a variable have a prominent place and play a significant role in the formulation of the basic assumptions of systems theory in sociology. Attention is drawn to the fact that systems theories offer a useful theoretical framework for problematization and explanation of human emotions and emotionality in a comprehensive and relevant manner. Finally, we discuss systems theory as a potential connecting point or a bridge between sociology and psychology (of emotions).

The paper discusses certain aspects of musical geography as a complex field of crossing musical content and musical, geographical and social space, social practices and system communication rules. Space music as the hybrid style and genre is layered mapping psychoacoustic phenomenon, sociological and cultural-historical coordinates in shaping the musical geography. It is presented by two aspects of this mapping: sound mapping in musical producing and sound making on autors like Brian Eno, and visually mapping, developed in the context of artistic publishing in production company ECM (Edition of Contemporary Music) and its founder Manfred Eicher.

This paper discusses the connection between categories of space in music, music production and lifestyles. The relations between the symbolic space of social connections and musical contents in the social space of various status interactions is complex and contradictory. Category of space in the music exists in four forms. Categories of space in the description of the experience of the musical works, as well as in the way of music production (spacing) are the integral part of the special way of consumption of these works (home Hi-Fi), and represent the social status, ways of cultural consumption and habitus in general.

Introduction. Hydroxycarbamide, used in therapy of hemoglobinopathies, enhances nitric oxide (NO) production both in primary human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) and human bone marrow endothelial cell line (TrHBMEC). Moreover, NO increases γ-globin and fetal hemoglobin levels in human erythroid progenitors. Objective. In order to find out whether simple physiologic stimulation of NO production by components of hematopoietic microenvironment can increase γ-globin gene expression, the effects of NO-inducer bradykinin were examined in endothelial cells. Methods. The study was performed in co-cultures of human erythroid progenitors, TrHBMEC and HUVECs by ozone-based chemiluminescent determination of NO and real-time quantitative RT-PCR. Results. In accordance with previous reports, the endogenous factor bradykinin increased endothelial cell production of NO in a dose- and time-dependent manner (0.1-0.6 μM up to 30 minutes). This induction of NO in HUVECs and TrHBMEC by bradykinin was blocked by competitive inhibitors of NO synthase (NOS), demonstrating NOS-dependence. It has been shown that bradykinin significantly reduced endothelial NOS (eNOS) mRNA level and eNOS/Я-actin ratio in HUVEC (by twofold). In addition, bradykinin failed to increase γ-globin mRNA expression in erythroid progenitors only, as well as in co-culture studies of erythroid progenitors with TrHBMEC and HUVEC after 24 hours of treatment. Furthermore, bradykinin did not induce γ/β globin ratio in erythroid progenitors in co-cultures with HUVEC. Conclusion. Bradykinin mediated eNOS activation leads to short time and low NO production in endothelial cells, insufficient to induce γ-globin gene expression. In recent years, nuts have gained importance because of their nutritional benefits in promoting health and preventing chronic diseases. Despite their recognized role as part of healthy dietary patterns, global consumption is below recommended levels, necessitating an investigation of factors influencing consumption and the impact of nutrition education.ObjectiveTo investigate the attitudes, knowledge and consumption habits of students in Serbia regarding the consumption of nuts and to examine the role and importance of food- or nutrition-related topics in academic curricula in promoting positive attitudes and habits regarding the consumption of nuts among pharmacy students.MethodsAn electronic questionnaire was used to collect data for this cross-sectional study. A total of 509 responses were collected, including 382 from pharmacy students (75.0%) and 127 from non-pharmacy students (25.0%).ResultsAttitudes toward eating nuts were generally positive, with statistically significant differences found between pharmacy students and non-pharmacy students for 10 statements. We review the potential of plasma medical applications, the connections to nanotechnologies and the results obtained by our group. A special issue in plasma medicine is the development of the plasma sources that would achieve non-equilibrium at atmospheric pressure in atmospheric gas mixture with no or only marginal heating of the gas, and with desired properties and mechanisms that may be controlled. Our studies have shown that control of radicals or chemically active products of the discharge such as ROS (reactive oxygen species) and/or NO may be used to control the growth of the seeds. At the same time specially designed plasma needle and other sources were shown to be efficient to sterilize not only colonies of bacteria but also planctonic samples (microorganisms protected by water) or bio films. Finally we have shown that plasma may induce differentiation of stem cells. Non-equilibrium plasmas may be used in detection of different specific markers in medicine. For example proton transfer mass spectroscopy may be employed in detection of volatile organic compounds without their dissociation and thus as a technique for instantaneous measurement of the presence of markers for numerous diseases. This paper has been developed on the margins of Foucault's idea of Heterotopia, on the basic distinction of Utopian and heterotopian. If pre-civil epoch is characterized experience of temporaries, which is overcome by going back (genealogy) or leaving to the future (prediction superstition) then its main feature is Utopian thinking, which means domination of the conception of Time over the conception of Space. On the contrary, the birth of Moderne introduces, gradually but surely overwhelming of Time over Space, where Utopia is being replaced by Heterotopia. It means, at the same time, abolishing of the eschatology of the pas (myths, genealogy) and the future (ideal community, ideal order) with an 'eschatology' of the present (here, now), which implies space variables, distribution. If Utopia is the place that is nowhere, then Heterotopia is the place that can be anywhere. Distribution means permanent change of borders, prevents institutionalization in the categories of the classical political theory, and questions categories of Tradition and Identity. In dealing with the problem of a region and regionalization, the paper starts from relation this historical transformation in human through and structuration of relations and the reality derived from these. The basic argument is that a region is paradoxical, if it lies on the local traditional, cultural, which are anachronistic values from the point of view of Heterotopia. At the same time if means that the borders of a region are of changeable, negotiable character, and that they don't have to match the previous administrative, political and cultural entities. The tendency of matching these borders means renewal of Utopia.

Background: The aim of this research is the synthesis and characterization of coumarin-palladium complex and the investigation of the cytotoxicity of both the ligand and the complex. Methods: The palladium( II) complex (CC) was obtained in the reaction between (E)-3-(1-((4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)amino)ethylidene)-2,4-dioxochroman-7-yl-acetate (CL) and potassium-tetrachloropalladate(II) and characterized using IR and NMR spectra, experimentally and theoretically. Cytotoxicity of CL and CC were determined for human cervical carcinoma HeLa, ovarian cancer A2780, hormone dependent breast cancer MCF7, and colorectal cancer HCT116 lines. The interaction of investigated compounds with HSA was followed by spectrofluorimetric method. The binding mechanism in the active pocket was assessed via molecular docking simulations. Results: A low mean absolute error between experimental and theoretical data proved that the optimized structure corresponded to the experimental one. Both compounds showed a satisfactory selectivity index towards neoplastic cells. The binding affinity of tested compounds to the HSA were confirmed. The molecular docking showed a much lower change in the Gibbs free energy of binding for CC compared to CL. Conclusions: The obtained results revealed that CL and CC exhibit significant effects on several cancer cell lines and good binding properties to HSA, while molecular docking discovered that CC has the most pronounced activity against alpha-fetoprotein.

Background: The aim of this study is to present the synthesis of two new compounds with promising antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties using precursors that contain pyrogallol and coumarin units. Methods: The characterization of the obtained compounds (PCHs) (E)-N′-(1-(2,4-dioxochroman-3-ylidene)ethyl)-2,3,4-trihydroxybenzohydrazide (PCH-1) and (E)-N′-(1-(2,4-dioxochroman-3-ylidene)ethyl)-3,4,5-trihydroxybenzohydrazide (PCH-2) was performed using various spectroscopic methods in combination with the DFT methods. To evaluate antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activities, PCHs were tested against 13 different types of microorganisms and soybean lipoxygenase. To determine the specific mechanisms of anti-LOX activity, molecular docking and molecular dynamics studies were performed. Results: These compounds had the most potent antibacterial activity against the bacterium Proteus mirabilis ATCC 12453, with a MIC value of 31.125 µg/mL. In addition, three standard bacterial species were chosen to evaluate the antibiofilm activity of tested substances. The results showed that the strongest effect of PCH-2 was noticed on the biofilm formation of Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 (BIC50 at 378 µg/mL). The anti-LOX results indicate that PCHs have excellent activity with the IC50 value for PCH-1 = 38.12 μM and PCH-2 = 34.12 μM. Conclusions: The obtained in vitro and in silico results confirm the strong inhibitory potential of the investigated compounds.

Introduction: Branchial cleft anomalies are considered to develop from the branchial apparatus that did not completely obliterate during the embryogenesis of the head and neck. These anomalies pose a significant challenge in terms of surgical management, particularly followed by misdiagnosis due to its rarity. The aim of this case report was to present the review of literature and treatment of a rare anomaly such as a second branchial cleft cyst with a particular focus on clinical as well as histopathological aspects. Case report: A 24-year-old woman was admitted to the otolaryngology department with a three-month history of painless right-sided neck swelling, following a previously resolved upper respiratory infection. The patient underwent complete excision of the cystic mass, with excellent cosmetic results and no signs of recurrence after a one-year follow-up. Conclusion: Therefore, surgery should always be the gold standard of treatment. In patients aged over 40 years, cystic metastasis from the occult head and neck primary carcinoma must be considered.

The aim of the conducted research is the perception of football in a chain of fan violence, with a special overview of the reporting of the media as social subjects whose task is to encourage other agents of the society to understand more seriously the problem and to respond more efficiently to violent and hooligan behaviour of football fans. By connecting theoretical findings and empirical data, the paper examines, within the subject of research in the media context, the examples of fan violence at football stadiums before, during and after football matches. The conclusion is that only with organized social action of all agents, in particular media, a solution to the problem of violence and hooliganism can be reached.

The possibility of applying modern multimedia technology as an assistive tool in working with children with learning disabilities is truly immense. The aim of this paper was twofold. Firstly, either to confirm or disprove a view that children with learning disabilities can accept educational content intended for the children of regular population and secondly, to design a learning tool, a multimedia video game especially developed for this occasion. The method of work consisted of the following phases: analysis of developmental limitations of a child and group in the kindergarten, selection of activities and suggestions of models of learning, design and development of the means for the realization of learning, working (playing) with the child in the group in several iterations and analysis of the obtained results. The results obtained indicate that the use of multimedia tools as a help in working with children with developmental disabilities can be crucial for achieving visible results in the mastering of topics usually intended for children of the regular population.

Mt. Stara Planina is located in the eastern part of the Republic of Serbia and represents the westernmost part of the large mountain massif of the Balkans. Both endogenous and exogenous forces created interesting geomorphological and hydrological features for geotourism development in this area. This article proposes a preliminary list of geomorphological and hydrological sites and analyses them to reveal which geosite possesses geotourism potential. This research was carried out by applying the modified geosite assessment model. In this article, ten geosites were singled out based on the degree of their attractiveness for geotourism development. The results reveal information about the key fields of improvement for each evaluated geosite, and identify which areas require more attention and better management in the upcoming period for Mt. Stara Planina to become a well-known geotourism destination that would attract a large number of tourists in the future.

Background: Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is one of the most common endocrine diseases in children. T-cell autoreactivity toward b-cells is controlled by significant changes in metabolism of T cells. Mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) is an important intracellular regulator of metabolism and cell growth. MAPK/MAK/MRK overlapping kinase 1 (MOK1) is one of the less known regulators of mTOR. We sought to investigate if MOK1 and mTOR mRNA levels in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of T1DM pediatric patients are different compared to healthy subjects. Methods: This study included 172 adolescents with T1DM and 36 healthy adolescent volunteers designated for control group (CG). MOK1 and mTOR mRNA levels were determined in PBMCs by qPCR. Results: T1DM patients have significant downregulation of MOK1 mRNA levels in PBMCs compared CG (P=0.018), while there was no significant difference in mTOR mRNA levels (P=0.891). Furthermore, in T1DM patients, MOK1 significantly correlated with age, triglycerides and mTOR, while mTOR correlated significantly with BMI and systolic blood pressure. Introduction: Aura is a subjective feeling that represents warning of the incoming seizure and it is the very beginning of the epileptic seizure. Epilepsy is a chronical disease which manifests itself through spontaneous repetition of epileptic seizures. Aim: Determine the differences between characteristics of auras in patients with pharmacoresistant temporal epilepsy which were in remission after the surgically treatment and patients who had recurrent seizures after the procedure. Material and methods: Retrospective study includes patients with focal pharmacoresistance epilepsy treated in the Neurology Clinic, Epilepsy Department, Clinical Center of Serbia in the period between July 1, 2010 and June 30, 2019. After treatment by resective surgery the patients were postoperatively tracked for one year. The information that were collected were about the duration of epilepsy, the presence of febrile seizures, lateralization of the ictal and interictal EEG, and number and type of the auras that patients had. Chi-square and Fisher's test will be used in order to assess the difference in frequency between examined variables according to postsurgical outcome. Results will be considered as significant if p ≤ 0.05. Analysis done in IBM SPSS ver. 21. Results: Total number of the patients in this study is 132 - 57 male and 75 female. The most common type of the aura was mesial temporal aura and it was present in 77 (58.3%) patients, and after that by frequency comes nonspecific aura (12.1%). Up to 50% of the patients had only one aura, and 17 (12.9%) patients were without auras. A number of 110 patients had favorable outcome, and 22 patients had non-favorable outcome. There was no statistically significant difference found at frequency of examined variables according to postsurgical outcome (p > 0.05). The statistically significant difference in localization of the interictal EEG according to epileptic focus was discovered (p < 0.001). Conclusion: There is no statistically significant difference in frequency of listed variables according to outcome.

Motivation:Chromatin immunoprecipitation sequencing (ChIP-seq) experiments are inexpensive and time-efficient, and result in massive datasets that introduce significant storage and maintenance challenges. To address the resulting Big Data problems, we propose a lossless and lossy compression framework specifically designed for ChIP-seq Wig data, termed ChIPWig. ChIPWig enables random access, summary statistics lookups and it is based on the asymptotic theory of optimal point density design for nonuniform quantizers. Results:We tested the ChIPWig compressor on 10 ChIP-seq datasets generated by the ENCODE consortium. On average, lossless ChIPWig reduced the file sizes to merely 6% of the original, and offered 6-fold compression rate improvement compared to bigWig. The lossy feature further reduced file sizes 2-fold compared to the lossless mode, with little or no effects on peak calling and motif discovery using specialized NarrowPeaks methods. The compression and decompression speed rates are of the order of 0.2 sec/MB using general purpose computers. Understanding the relationship between individuals social networks and health could help devise public health interventions for reducing incidence of unhealthy behaviors or increasing prevalence of healthy ones. In this context, we explore the co-evolution of individuals social network positions and physical activities. We are able to do so because the NetHealth study at the University of Notre Dame has generated both high-resolution longitudinal social network (e.g., SMS) data and high-resolution longitudinal health-related behavioral (e.g., Fitbit physical activity) data. We examine trait differences between (i) users whose social network positions (i.e., centralities) change over time versus those whose centralities remain stable, (ii) users whose Fitbit physical activities change over time versus those whose physical activities remain stable, and (iii) users whose centralities and their physical activities co-evolve, i.e., correlate with each other over time. We find that centralities of a majority of all nodes change with time. These users do not show any trait difference compared to time-stable users. However, if out of all users whose centralities change with time we focus on those whose physical activities also change with time, then the resulting users are more likely to be introverted than time-stable users. Moreover, users whose centralities and physical activities both change with time and whose evolving centralities are significantly correlated (i.e., co-evolve) with evolving physical activities are more likely to be introverted as well as anxious compared to those users who are time-stable and do not have a co-evolution relationship. Our network analysis framework reveals several links between individuals social network structure, health-related behaviors, and the other (e.g., personality) traits. In the future, our study could lead to development of a predictive model of social network structure from behavioral/trait information and vice versa.

Since 2013, symptoms indicative of I. nidus-pici infections were recorded in various stands in the central part of Serbia and several tree species from Fagaceae family were affected. After the detailed sampling, isolation and identification of the fungus using both classical and molecular methods, the current distribution and host range were determined. This fungus was recorded at 17 additional localities in the central part of Serbia, and Q. cerris was the most common and most affected host. Further, huge damages were occasionally recorded at Q. petraea, particularly when growing in mixed stands with Q. cerris. In addition, Q. frainetto and Fagus sylvatica were confirmed as new hosts of this pathogen in Serbia. Implications of these findings and potential control measures were discussed.

The article researches the direct tax effect on investment share in thirty-five OECD countries for the period from 1996 to 2016 year. The goal of this research is to determine how direct taxes influence on investment level measured by the share in the gross domestic product. The empirical analysis enables the implementation of fundamental econometric procedures as well as different dynamic panel models in order to measure effect of direct taxes. Results of Hausman show that PMG model is appropriate for measuring the effect of tax revenue growth, personal income tax, corporate income tax and property tax on investment share in selected countries. The model results reflect significant effect of tax revenue growth, personal income tax and property tax in the long term, while corporate tax is not significant for investment share in OECD countries. However, direct taxes do not have significant impact on investment share in the short-term, except tax revenue growth has positive effect on the investment in observed period.

There is a constant need for effective drugs, combinations of drugs and methods for the prevention of bacterial and viral infections, including coronavirus. It is known that the role of trace elements in strengthening the human immune system is significant. Vitamins, trace elements, including zinc, iron, selenium, magnesium and copper, and omega-3 fatty acids, play essential physiological roles in promoting the immune system. Zinc is a necessary microelement for basic enzymatic physiological processes; it plays an important role in cell division and is involved in the development of cells responsible for non-specific immunity. Zinc deficiency is known to predispose patients to viral infection due to reduced antiviral immunity. In addition, flavonoids as plant metabolites play an important role in oxidative stress prevention. This manuscript aims to discuss the roles of zinc, flavonoids and their complexes in vitro, as well as their antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. The justification for the simultaneous use of zinc and flavonoids is also considered.

Crop yield increases with a sustained increase in leaf photosynthesis. Due to many limitations, plants do not sufficiently use their photosynthetic capacity. Carbon dots (CDs) have a high light harvest capability, which may be used to improve the photosynthesis efficiency of plants. In this study, nontoxic orange CDs (o-CDs) were foliarly applied to boost the maize (Zea mays L.) and green beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) productivity in the field. Leaves of both plant species were sprayed three times with 1 and 5 mg/L of the o-CDs aqueous solutions in equal intervals during the vegetative growth stage until flowering. To find the best geometries for CO2 adsorption on o-CD, modeling of o-CDs-CO2 interaction was performed. Photosynthesis parameters and fruit yield were measured during plant growth. Total phenolic content and antioxidative activity were monitored as oxidative stress indicators. Computational simulations and spectroscopic measurements suggest that o-CDs, acting as a "CO2 delivery" system, can enhance photosynthetic efficiency. Photosynthesis was enhanced in both plant species, but only green beans showed an increased fruit yield. CO2 use in tested species was discussed in light of two mechanisms. Plant species show different, but no significant antioxidative responses. The chemical surface composition has shown that o-CDs were not contained in either the leaves or fruits of the treated plants. The results indicate that o-CDs may be applied as a simple and safe biostimulator on plants. That could have an environmental benefit in capturing CO2 in the atmosphere. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Основни задатак овог рада је да истражи значења појмова везаних за примарне боје (црвену, плаву и жуту) у енглеском и српском језику, као и да утврди да ли се међу њима и у којој мери могу успоставити односи кореспонденције или еквиваленције. Ради се о истраживању рађеном на корпусу који се састоји од два општа речника. У зависности од семантичког поља са којима су лексеме са називима боја повезане, рад нуди преглед пет значењских категорија у оба језика: (1) флора, фауна и биолошки аспекти, (2) физичке карактеристике, (3) емотивна стања и понашање, (4) политика, организације и групе и (5) остало. Уз одређене специфичности и изузетке, налазимо одређени степен значењског преклапања у два језика.
