The use of seashells as a partial substitute for cement in construction not only offers an innovative solution for marine waste management but also contributes to reducing the carbon footprint of the cement industry, decreasing the CO2 emissions associated with cement production and promoting more sustainable construction practices. This study addresses the mechanical behavior of mortar specimens with partial cement replacement using crushed Biobío region clam shells, both calcined and uncalcined, at substitution rates of 5% and 10%. This approach allows the analysis of their effect on the mechanical strength and properties of the mortar, which has not been widely investigated in the Chilean context or with this particular species of shell. For the mechanical characterization of the specimens, tensile flexural tests and compressive tests were were conducted at ages of 3, 7, 14, and 28 days. The compressive strengths of the samples that incorporated calcined residue with partial cement replacements of 5% and 10% were 83.69% and 78.27%, respectively, of the average strength of 20.97 MPa reached by the standard sample. In terms of their tensile flexural strength, these samples reached average strengths of 104.31% and 104.04% of the strength of 12.12 MPa obtained by the standard sample. In the case of the uncalcined samples, the 5% and 10% replacements reached 103.55% and 102.64% of the tensile strength of 15.54 MPa obtained by the standard sample, while they reached 92.32% and 80.07% of the compressive strength of 27.81 MPa achieved by the standard sample. From these results, it is determined that the calcined shells did not improve the mechanical resistance of the mortar, suggesting that the calcination process must be studied in depth.

Currently, the cultivation and harvesting of mollusks is a crucial activity worldwide. However, this industry generates a large amount of mollusk shell waste disposed of in landfills, causing environmental pollution. In addition, the companies linked to this item allocate large sums of money to depositing the shells in authorized landfills. In South America, Chile is one of the leading producers worldwide of scallop shell (Argopecten purpuratus) waste, creating a growing environmental and financial problem in the country, especially considering that there has yet to be progress in the development of new technologies that may reuse this waste in Chile. This study used different techniques to completely characterize the northern Chile scallop shell waste’s physical and chemical properties for the first time. The XRD result corresponded with calcite crystal structures (CaCO3), and the XFR showed 97.68% purity. Three particle sizes were obtained: BS (595–100 µm), MS (250–595 µm), and SS (2/g, 0.0050 m3/g of pore volume and pore diameter of 18.0 nm, removed 100.0% of CA and 23.0% As(III) in a pH condition of 4.6. The results show that scallop shell waste can be used to treat water and reinforce polymeric matrix composite materials to improve mechanical properties.

A characterization of composite materials of a polyester matrix reinforced with natural fibers of Cuban henequen and organophilized Cuban bentonite was carried out, the experimental results of which are used to formulate, implement, and validate a scalar damage model. The fibers were added on a weight basis of 15, 20, and 25% as a reinforcing material, and organophilized Cuban bentonite, in amounts of 3, 5, and 7% by weight, was added. Samples containing only polymer and fibers showed the best mechanical performance for 25% of fiber, with increases of 51% in the tensile strength and 169% on the impact resistance. Samples containing polymer and clay showed the best results for 5% of bentonite, with increases of 89% in the tensile strength and 83% on the impact resistance, and samples containing 25% fiber and 5% clay were also prepared and achieved a 98% increase in the tensile strength and 219% in the impact strength. The scalar damage model deals with an internal variable, which corresponds to the damage variable, together with a failure surface that allows identifying the mechanical state of the material dependent on the mechanical stress, obtaining an adequate correlation with the results of the experimental tests.

This study applied the finite element method (FEM) and the moiré strip projection method to evaluate the biomechanical behavior of healthy and endodontic-treated premolar teeth. The finite element method and the moiré strip projection method were applied to evaluate the influence of restored materials in association with cervical lesions and were considered as strain estimates for a tooth sample with 21 units, under loads of 25, 50, 75, and 100 N, frontal and oblique applied. The focused cases were: tooth H healthy; tooth A-MOD amalgam; tooth AL-MOD amalgam + lesion; tooth ALR-MOD amalgam + injury restored; tooth R-MOD resin; tooth RL-MOD resin + lesion; tooth RLR-MOD resin + injury restored. The results obtained by FEM simulation can be considered perfectly validated by the results presented by the experimental moiré projection analysis, demonstrating that the FEM numerical analysis can be used to evaluate the biomechanical behavior of healthy and endodontically treated teeth. Developing an alternative protocol to generate FEM three-dimensional models will lead to a ready and inexpensive tool since there is no need for costly equipment for tooth extraction prognosis.

A methodology based on the DHM of reflection using a Michelson micro interferometer scheme is used here for dimensional controlling objects and for determining the surface profile of steel samples. To reconstruct phase contrast distribution images, numerical techniques are used that enable Digital Holographic Microscopy to suppress zero order, pixel resolution control, optical phase unwrapping, intensity and phase mapping, filter and compensation of optical system aberrations that influence the quality of the image. The numerical reconstruction of the images is conducted using the double propagation algorithm. The program used allows quantitative measurements of the dimensions of objects and the surface profile of the samples, as well as the 3D representation of the reconstructed phase image. The results from DHM are validated by comparison with those from a non-contact 3D profilometer model CCI-MP. Keywords: Digital holography, Digital Holographic Microscopy, Surface profile

Objetivo: el objetivo principal de este trabajo es estudiar la posibilidad de que sean empleados como sistema de liberación controlada de fármacos, discos de Hidroxiapatita (HA) cubana, fabricados por prensado y sinterizado en hornos eléctrico, sin el empleo de agentes formadores de poros, con porosidades aparentes de 12, 20 y 40%, que fueron dopados por sobre presión con una solución acuosa de alginato de sodio al 5 % y 55 ppm de ceftazidima. Métodos: se estudió la relación entre la penetración del polímero y la porosidad aparente con la liberación del fármaco. Resultados: se demostró que estos discos infiltrados con el polímero que encapsula el fármaco pueden ser utilizados como sistema de liberación controlada. Se demuestra que la porosidad aparente y el tamaño de los poros son influyentes en la penetración del polímero y la masa de fármaco liberado. Conclusiones: En las curvas de liberación obtenidas se observa que los discos pueden ser un potencial material para soportar medicamentos porque se evidencia como el material es capaz de controlar la liberación del medicamento remanente ocluido por un método de dopaje a sobre presión.El perfil indica que en un periodo de siete días se libera controladamente el medicamento.

This work utilizes a Gabor Holographic Optical Scheme integrated with a microscope objective and a thin convex plane lens. This bi-telecentric lens system corrects spherical aberration from the objective, maintains consistent magnification across various reconstruction distances, and ensures a plane incidence on CMOS. Depending on the focal lengths of the objective and lens, the final image can be enlarged or reduced compared to the classic Gabor system, resulting in high-quality reconstructed phase images without spherical aberration. This setup was employed to capture phase distribution and intensity images of planktonic objects, such as copepods, achieving superior image quality.

Objetivo: el propósito central de este trabajo es evaluar la bioactividad in vitro de capas de alginato de sodio en discos de hidroxiapatita. Métodos: los discos de hidroxiapatita fueron elaborados mediante procesos sucesivos de prensado y de sinterizado en un horno eléctrico. Las capas de alginato de sodio se obtuvieron empleando el método de sobrepresión y una disolución acuosa de alginato de sodio al 5 %. En el ensayo de bioactividad las muestras a estudiar fueron sumergidas en fluido biológico simulado. La caracterización de las muestras se realizó empleando microscopia electrónica de barrido y energía dispersiva de rayos X. Resultados: en las muestras de hidroxiapatita sometidas al ensayo de bioactividad, con y sin capas de alginato de sodio, se observó la formación de precipitados ricos en calcio y fósforo. Además, se determinó que con el aumento del tiempo de inmersión en el fluido biológico simulado se incrementan las dimensiones de los aglomerados formados por partículas apatíticas. Conclusiones: los resultados experimentales corroboran que la hidroxiapatita es bioactiva y demuestran que las capas estudiadas de alginato de sodio en discos de hidroxiapatita poseen un comportamiento bioactivo.
