4. Collaborative Learning in Chemistry: Impact of COVID-19

Abstract

Student learning and course performance are often improved when students actively engage with content. However, pedagogical practices that foster active engagement often rely on student-student and student-instructor interactions that may be difficult to adapt to an online environment. Here we describe a Collaborative Learning program that provides such a learning opportunity to self-selecting General and Organic Chemistry students, describe how this program suddenly transitioned to remote learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and reflect on the benefits and challenges that we observed. We believe this online adaptation impacted students' content preparation, slowed content coverage, and influenced student use of resources. Students appeared more accepting of the role system within each team, which was modified for the remote workspace. In some circumstances, we found students to be more process-oriented in their problem solving, which we attribute to students being reluctant to "guess and check" given the cumbersomeness of the shared, online annotation space. We observed that seeing faces during collaborative work enhances group cohesion, but we did not require students to use their cameras out of respect for their privacy. While we are engaged in a forthcoming study to assess student outcomes and facilitator experiences, our aim for this reflection is to aid others in the community, as decisions are being made for the upcoming term.

Abstract

Bournonite (CuPbSbS3) and enargite (Cu3AsS4) have recently been used as absorber layers in thin-film photovoltaic devices due to their ideal bandgap and ferroelectric properties. An understanding of the ferroelectric domain structure in these materials is required so that the benefits of the internal depolarizing electric fields can be fully exploited. Here, the atomic structure and electronic properties of domain walls (DWs) are elucidated through a combined aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy and density functional theory study. ∼90° and 180° DWs are observed in bournonite. As the 180° DW is charge neutral, it cannot contribute to the anomalous photovoltaic effect that leads to high open circuit voltages. The ∼90° DW shows a slight offset across the boundary, but the contributions of this to the anomalous photovoltaic effect are negligible. The DWs are also electrically passive, i.e., they do not result in significant recombination and do not block charge carrier transport. A high density of stacking faults (SF) was, however, observed in enargite. The SFs have a large number of defect states within the bandgap, which would lower the device efficiency through Shockley–Read–Hall recombination. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Polycrystalline materials are ubiquitous in technology, and grain boundaries have long been known to affect materials properties and performance. First principles materials modeling and electron microscopy methods are powerful and highly complementary for investigating the atomic scale structure and properties of grain boundaries. In this review, we provide an introduction to key concepts and approaches for investigating grain boundaries using these methods. We also provide a number of case studies providing examples of their application to understand the impact of grain boundaries for a range of energy materials. Most of the materials presented are of interest for photovoltaic and photoelectrochemical applications and so we include a more in depth discussion of how modeling and electron microscopy can be employed to understand the impact of grain boundaries on the behavior of photoexcited electrons and holes (including carrier transport and recombination). However, we also include discussion of materials relevant to rechargeable batteries as another important class of materials for energy applications. We conclude the review with a discussion of outstanding challenges in the field and the exciting prospects for progress in the coming years. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Objective: The objective of this study is to evaluate the safety, efficacy, and owner satisfaction following electrosurgical ventriculocordectomy (EVC), in conjunction with prosthetic laryngoplasty, in equine clinical cases affected with left- or right-sided recurrent laryngeal neuropathy.Methods: Retrospective data analysis of clinical signalment, surgery, athletic outcome, intra- and postoperative complications, and postoperative examinations from clinical cases wherein EVC was performed in conjunction with traditional prosthetic laryngoplasty from one practice. Owners were contacted by phone or email for a follow-up questionnaire.Results: Twenty-four horses underwent unilateral EVC, performed transendoscopically under sedated restraint, using monopolar electrosurgical instrumentation successfully. One horse experienced excessive intraoperative hemorrhage. No horses demonstrated postoperative complications. Twenty cases had a history of increased airway noise prior to surgery. In 15 of these cases (15/20, 75%), the airway noise was reported as fully improved post-surgery. Eighteen cases had a history of exercise intolerance prior to surgery. In 15 of these cases (15/18; 83%), the exercise intolerance was reported as resolved.Conclusion: EVC, in conjunction with prosthetic laryngoplasty, can contribute to improvement of RLN symptoms and aid in the effective return to athletic work. Performing transendoscopic ventriculocordectomy with monopolar electrosurgical instrumentation provides comparable clinical outcomes to traditional techniques using a diode laser or direct excision via laryngotomy.

11. Improving safety and efficiency in special care dentistry through quality improvement of patient information in the Belfast Trust.

Abstract

The Belfast Health and Social Care Trust's Special Care Dentistry unit provides treatment under conscious sedation and general anaesthetic. Patients were sent generic preoperative information which was not in a user friendly format for special care dentistry. This presented a patient safety issue with reliance on staff to verbally reinforce information. Through a quality improvement project we aimed to design a new patient information leaflet to improve safety and clinical effectiveness; incorporate guidance and reduce variation; improve patient experience and improve efficiency within our service by reducing staff administration time. Plan Do Study Act (PDSA) cycles collated information from dental trainees, nurses and patients. Patient and carer feedback was sought on the quality and usefulness of information. We utilised patient feedback and a reading group to develop a new special care dentistry preoperative information leaflet. Through quality improvement and service user engagement we have improved patient safety and satisfaction and improved efficiency through the standardisation of pre-operative information. Abstract

The authors highlight the importance of transient configurations of atoms on the surface of nanocrystallites, and present methodologies for their investigation. A Monte Carlo method has been developed and is used to simulate the thermodynamic equilibrium of nanometer sized Au nanocrystallites, both free and supported on a MgO(100) surface. The authors find that appreciable numbers of atoms transiently occupy adatom positions on Au(111) facets, even at room temperature. This type of dynamically appearing site is usually neglected in relation to catalysis but may have a significant activity (for CO oxidation, for example). They also observe a complex solid-solid roughening transition which involves a variety of transient local atom configurations on the surface of nanocrystallites. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The crystal structure identification of the photovoltaic material Cu2ZnSnSe4 (CZTSe) is challenging due to the distinguishing feature between the two polymorphs, kesterite and stannite, being the arrangement of Cu and Zn ions. Here an energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) technique, based on electron beam channeling along specific crystallographic planes in a transmission electron microscope (TEM), is used to identify the structure. Regions a few 100 nm in size can be analysed using this method, unlike neutron or anomalous X-ray scattering. The parent crystal structure of CZTSe, annealed on either side of the order–disorder transition temperature, was correctly identified as being kesterite. The presence of 1/2[110] (001) and 1/4[201] (101) anti-site boundaries (ASBs) has also been investigated. The density of ASBs is higher above the transition temperature, due to a smaller energy penalty for disordering on the 2c and 2d Wyckoff sites. A nearest neighbour cation analysis predicted the 1/2[110] (001) ASB to have the lowest formation energy. From density functional theory (DFT) simulations the 1/2[110] (001) ASB energy is only 43 mJ m−2 and furthermore it is not a recombination site or current blocking layer, so that photovoltaic device performance is not significantly degraded. Abstract

We present a first principles based investigation into the nucleation and growth of metal-rich precipitates in substoichiometric hafnium dioxide with relevance to applications in resistive switching memories. We identify an optimal HfOx stoichiometry, with x in the range 1.50–1.75, for efficient nucleation and growth of stable Hf-rich clusters which may serve as precursors for the growth of conductive filaments during forming. We also show that filaments with sub-nm diameter posses remarkably metallic character. These results provide invaluable atomistic insight into forming in resistive switching films and demonstrate that precise regulation of stoichiometry is essential in order to ensure uniformity in the nucleation and subsequent growth of a conductive filament during the forming process.
