Chemisorption of muonium onto the surface of gold nanoparticles has been observed. Muonium (µ+e-), a light hydrogen-like atom, reacts chemically with uncapped 7 nm gold nanoparticles embedded in mesoporous silica (SBA-15) with a strong temperature-dependent rate. The addition rate is fast enough to allow coherent spin transfer into a diamagnetic muon state on the nanoparticle surface. The muon is well established as a sensitive probe of static or slowly fluctuating magnetic fields in bulk matter. These results represent the first muon spin rotation signal on a nanoparticle surface or any metallic surface. Only weak magnetic effects are seen on the surface of these Au nanoparticles consistent with Pauli paramagnetism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A 28 keV beam of Mg ions was extracted from a uranium carbide, proton-beam-irradiated target coupled to a laser ion source. The ion beam was nuclear-spin polarized by collinear optical pumping on the $^{2}\textit {S}_{1/2}$ - $^{2}\textit {P}_{1/2}$ transition at 280 nm. The polarization was preserved by an extended 1 mT guide field as the beam was transported via electrostatic bends into a 2.5 T longitudinal magnetic field. There the beam was implanted into a single crystal MgO target and the beta decay asymmetry was measured. Both hyperfine ground states were optically pumped with a single frequency light source, using segmentation of the beam energy, which boosted the polarization by approximately 50 % compared to pumping a single ground state. The total decay asymmetry of 0.06 and beam intensity were sufficient to provide a useful spin-1/2 beam for future BNMR experiments. A variant of the method was used previously to optically pump the full Doppler-broadened absorption profile of a beam of Be with a single-frequency light source. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Decreased bone mineral density (BMD) represents an extraintestinal complication of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Vitamin D3 has been considered a viable adjunctive therapy in IBD. However, vitamin D3 plays a pleiotropic role in bone modeling and regulates the bone formation-resorption balance, depending on the physiological environment, and supplementation during active IBD may have unintended consequences. We evaluated the effects of vitamin D3 supplementation during the active phase of disease on colonic inflammation, BMD, and bone metabolism in an adoptive IL-10-/- CD4+ T cell transfer model of chronic colitis. High-dose vitamin D3 supplementation for 12 days during established disease had negligible effects on mucosal inflammation. Plasma vitamin D3 metabolites correlated with diet, but not disease, status. Colitis significantly reduced BMD. High-dose vitamin D3 supplementation did not affect cortical bone but led to a further deterioration of trabecular bone morphology. In mice fed a high vitamin D3 diet, colitis more severely impacted bone formation markers (osteocalcin and bone alkaline phosphatase) and increased bone resorption markers, ratio of receptor activator of NF-B ligand to osteoprotegrin transcript, plasma osteoprotegrin level, and the osteoclast activation marker tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (ACp5). Bone vitamin D receptor expression was increased in mice with chronic colitis, especially in the high vitamin D3 group. Our data suggest that vitamin D3, at a dose that does not improve inflammation, has no beneficial effects on bone metabolism and density during active colitis or may adversely affect BMD and bone turnover. These observations should be taken into consideration in the planning of further clinical studies with high-dose vitamin D3 supplementation in patients with active IBD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ABSTRACT We present the first observational limits to the ultra-high-energy (UHE) neutrino flux from the Galactic Centre, and from Centaurus A which is the nearest active galactic nucleus. These results are based on our 'Lunar UHE Neutrino Astrophysics using the Square Kilometre Array' (LUNASKA) project experiments at the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA). We also derive limits for the previous experiments and compare these limits with expectations for acceleration and superheavy dark matter models of the origin of UHE cosmic rays. The Fosdick Mountains, West Antarctica, expose a 15 x 80 km migmatite-cored gneiss dome consisting of migmatitic gneisses, diatexite migmatite, and subhorizontal leucogranite sheets. The Fosdick dome was emplaced and exhumed in the mid-Cretaceous due to oblique extension associated with the West Antarctic Rift system along the West Antarctic-New Zealand segment of East Gondwana. The dome is bounded to the south by a dextral oblique detachment structure and to the north by an inferred dextral strike-slip fault. Within the Fosdick dome and in the detachment zone, granite occupies leucosomes, dikes, sills, and dilatant and shear structures. The pattern of kilometer-scale domains of migmatite and granite suggest that lithologic variations and heterogeneous deformation (boudinage) resulted in pressure gradients that enhanced melt flow and magma accumulation in the Fosdick dome. Steep foliations are overprinted, folded, and transposed by subhorizontal fabrics. The crosscutting relationship is interpreted as a transition from wrench deformation to oblique divergence. Steep structures in the dome host concordant, subvertical leucosome and granite sheets yielding SHRIMP U-Pb zircon ages between ca. 117 and 114 Ma. Prevalent subhorizontal domains host large volumes of subhorizontal diatexite migmatite and granite sheets that yield U-Pb zircon ages between ca. 109 and 102 Ma. These ages indicate a timescale for melt influx of approximately 15 Ma and that the transition from wrench to oblique divergence may have occurred in as little as 5 Ma. Granites with crystallization ages between ca. 109 and 102 Ma were also emplaced in the South Fosdick Detachment zone, indicating that the detachment was active during oblique divergence. SHRIMP U-Pb titanite ages between ca. 102 and 97 Ma for late- to post-tectonic diorite dikes are interpreted as emplacement ages and give a minimum age for gneissic foliation development during detachment faulting. The Fosdick Mountains preserve a record of the middle to lower crustal response to a transition from wrench to oblique extensional deformation. Overprinting structural relationships show that a change in the angle of oblique extension can induce accumulation of subhorizontal magma sheets and lead to initiation of a detachment zone. The upward transfer of partially molten crust and the formation of gneiss domes and metamorphic core complexes commonly take place by localization of normal or oblique extension in the middle and upper crust. In Marie Byrd Land, Antarctica, a transition from wrench to oblique extension occurred during oblique plate divergence along the East Gondwana margin and intracontinental crustal extension associated with the West Antarctic Rift System in mid-Cretaceous time. Migmatites in the Fosdick dome record steep fabrics formed during wrenching, and associated granite networks display crystallization ages of 117-115 Ma. These steep fabrics are overprinted by subhorizontal foliation and leucogranite sheets with crystallization ages in the 109-102 Ma range. Syntectonic emplacement of granite sheets in the South Fosdick detachment zone indicates that detachment tectonics led to rapid exhumation of the terrain by 100 Ma. This study has implications for understanding melt transport, magma accumulation, and the formation of detachments in an oblique tectonic setting. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The cost impact of aerodynamic tolerances on the wetted surface of an engine nacelle is considered. Manufacturing tolerance data were obtained from Bombardier Aerospace Shorts, Belfast, while the corresponding costs were calculated according to various recurring elements such as basic and overtime labour, rework, concessions, redeployment, etc., along with amortized non-recurrent costs due to jigs and tooling, machinery, etc. The cost–tolerance relations were modelled statistically so that the influence of tolerance change could be ascertained. It was found that relatively small tolerance relaxations resulted in significantly reduced costs of production but that there was a large variation in the sensitivity, at current levels. The resultant drag penalty was also predicted in conjunction with the cost–tolerance estimation to show that the operational cost effectiveness of the nacelle was increased by 0.33 per cent. Thrombocytopenia is a frequent complication of cirrhosis. Its pathogenesis is not well known, but it has been suggested that splenic congestion induced by portal hypertension may be a major contributory factor. However, the available data regarding the effect of portal decompression either by surgical shunts or transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) on peripheral platelet count in cirrhotics is conflicting. We studied the effects of TIPS on platelet count and mean platelet volume, following a successful TIPS placement. The platelet count had a tendency to decrease but was not statistically significant (120,100 +/- 72,100/mm3 before TIPS vs 99,800 +/- 51,400/mm3 after TIPS). The mean platelet volume remained essentially unchanged (9.8 +/- 1.5 fL before TIPS and 9.9 +/- 1.5 fL after TIPS). These results confirm that TIPS has an unpredictable effect on platelet count in cirrhotic patients with thrombocytopenia. The lack of a consistent increase in the peripheral mean platelet volume following TIPS placement suggests that TIPS is unable to significantly enhance the release of platelets sequestered in the splenic compartment in portal hypertension. Background: There is growing evidence to suggest the importance of the lymphocyte in the pathogenesis of asthma, particularly in the late phase reactions and ongoing bronchial hyperreactivity. Platelet activating factor (PAF) has also been identified as a potentially important mediator in asthma.Methods: The migration of human peripheral blood lymphocytes obtained from normal volunteers in response to PAF and the effect of PAF antagonists was studied in a well standardised in vitro assay using nitrocellulose micropore filters in a microchemotaxis chamber.Results: PAF is a potent stimulus to in vitro human lymphocyte migration; at an optimal concentration of 1 nM it augmented lymphocyte chemokinesis to 310% (SE 33%) of control values. The response to PAF appears to be specific since lyso-PAF and other related membrane phospholipids had no effect. PAF-induced migration could be abrogated by specific PAF receptor antagonists such as WEB 2086 (100 nM), and was partially blocked by the cyclooxygenase inhibitor flurbiprofen at a concentration of 1 microM.Conclusions: PAF stimulates the in vitro migration of human lymphocytes through a specific PAF receptor. Part of the response may be due to the generation of cyclooxygenase products. PAF may play a part in the recruitment of lymphocytes to asthmatic airways. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report measurements of the diffusion rate of isolated ion-implanted 8Li+ within ~120 nm of the surface of oriented single-crystal rutile TiO2 using a radiotracer technique. The a particles from the 8Li decay provide a sensitive monitor of the distance from the surface and how the depth profile of 8Li evolves with time. The main findings are that the implanted Li+ diffuses and traps at the (001) surface. The T dependence of the diffusivity is described by a bi-Arrhenius expression with activation energies of 0.3341(21) eV above 200 K, whereas at lower temperatures it has a much smaller barrier of 0.0313(15) eV.
