12. Cultural Models of Parent-School Involvement: A Study of African American, Caribbean, and Hispanic Parents and Teachers in an Urban U.S. School District

Abstract

This mixed-methods study explored cultural models of parent-school involvement. African American, Caribbean, and Hispanic parents, along with teachers, were recruited from an urban school district. Participants were interviewed using a semi-structured interview protocol based on Joyce Epstein's (1995) framework for parent-school involvement, and their responses were thematically coded. Statistical and qualitative analyses of responses revealed significant group differences in ideas about involvement and education across the domains of parenting, communicating, and learning at home, but not for volunteering. The findings suggest that conventional beliefs and practices of parent--school involvement in the U.S. are not universal among parents of different cultural groups, and discrepancies between parents' and teachers' ideas about involvement may therefore emerge as well. The implications of these findings for schools' efforts to involve parents are discussed.

13. The Mobile Augmented Reality Acceptance Model for Teachers and Future Teachers

Abstract

This study examines the factors that affect pre-service and in-service teachers' intention to use Mobile Augmented Reality (MAR) in their teaching through the proposed Mobile Augmented Reality Acceptance Model (MARAM). The MARAM builds on the existing Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) to incorporate four other components namely perceived relative advantage, perceived enjoyment, facilitating conditions, and mobile self-efficacy. In addition, this study investigates the validity of the MARAM. Data were collected from 137 pre-service and 169 in-service teachers who completed a questionnaire after having developed their own MAR applications during an undergraduate university course and a training seminar, respectively. Structural Equation Model (SEM) analysis was conducted separately for each group, as well as for both samples together. We also conducted a multi-group analysis to examine differences across the two samples. The results for both samples together (N = 306), showed that intention was affected by attitude, perceived usefulness and facilitating conditions. In turn, attitude was affected by perceived enjoyment and perceived usefulness. Perceived usefulness was affected by perceived enjoyment and perceived relative advantage. Perceived ease of use was affected by mobile self-efficacy and facilitating conditions. However, perceived ease of use did not affect perceived usefulness or attitude. A multi-group analysis conducted on the sample of pre-service and in-service teachers produced similar results, with minor differentiations. These results have implications for the use of MAR in research and schools, as well as technology acceptance models in education.

Abstract

BackgroundThe Collaborative Outcome study on Health and Functioning during Infection Times (COH-FIT; www.coh-fit.com) is an anonymous and global online survey measuring health and functioning during the COVID-19 pandemic. The aim of this study was to test concurrently the validity of COH-FIT items and the internal validity of the co-primary outcome, a composite psychopathology "P-score".MethodsThe COH-FIT survey has been translated into 30 languages (two blind forward-translations, consensus, one independent English back-translation, final harmonization). To measure mental health, 1-4 items ("COH-FIT items") were extracted from validated questionnaires (e.g. Patient Health Questionnaire 9). COH-FIT items measured anxiety, depressive, post-traumatic, obsessive-compulsive, bipolar and psychotic symptoms, as well as stress, sleep and concentration. COH-FIT Items which correlated r ≥ 0.5 with validated companion questionnaires, were initially retained. A P-score factor structure was then identified from these items using exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analyses (CFA) on data split into training and validation sets. Consistency of results across languages, gender and age was assessed.ResultsFrom >150,000 adult responses by May 6th, 2022, a subset of 22,456 completed both COH-FIT items and validated questionnaires. Concurrent validity was consistently demonstrated across different languages for COH-FIT items. CFA confirmed EFA results of five first-order factors (anxiety, depression, post-traumatic, psychotic, psychophysiologic symptoms) and revealed a single second-order factor P-score, with high internal reliability (ω = 0.95). Factor structure was consistent across age and sex.ConclusionsCOH-FIT is a valid instrument to globally measure mental health during infection times. The P-score is a valid measure of multidimensional mental health.

Abstract

Network meta-analysis (NMA) is an established method for assessing the comparative efficacy and safety of competing interventions. It is often the case that we deal with interventions that consist of multiple, possibly interacting, components. Examples of interventions' components include characteristics of the intervention, mode (face-to-face, remotely etc.), location (hospital, home etc.), provider (physician, nurse etc.), time of communication (synchronous, asynchronous etc.) and other context related components. Networks of multicomponent interventions are typically sparse and classical NMA inference is not straightforward and prone to confounding. Ideally, we would like to disentangle the effect of each component to find out what works (or does not work). To this aim, we propose novel ways of visualizing the NMA results, describe their use, and illustrate their application in real-life examples. We developed an R package "viscomp" to produce all the suggested figures.

48. Effect of Dance Aerobic Programs on Intrinsic Motivation and Perceived Task Climate in Secondary School Students

Abstract

The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of a dance aerobic intervention program on intrinsic motivation and perceived motivation climate in 7th grade middle school students. The sample of the study consisted of 160 healthy students, of the first grade of middle school. Of these, 91 students was the experimental group and the remaining 69 was the control. The experimental group followed an aerobic dance intervention program for ten weeks, three times per week, with 45-minute sessions while the control group only followed the typical physical education program of the school. In order to conduct the study the following instruments were used: a) the Intrinsic Motivation Inventory (??? -- McAuley, Duncan & Tammen, 1989) and the Perceived Oriented Climate (LAPOPECQ; Papaioannou, 1998).

49. Traditional Dances as a Means of Teaching Social Skills to Elementary School Students

Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate: a. the effect of an interdisciplinary program of Greek traditional dance by the means of the teamwork method of teaching social skills to students. b. whether this effect was similar for boys and girls. The sample of the study constituted of 206 elementary school pupils (4th, 5th, and 6th class). The intervention program lasted for two months. There were a total of sixteen lessons (2 per week) which concerned the acquisition of social skills through Greek traditional dance (the experimental group). The method in use was either the group divided work or teamwork. The Greek version (Masadis et al., 2016) of Matson Evaluation of Social Skills with Youngsters (MESSY-II) (Matson et al., 2012) was applied to collect the research data. This in order to be analysed required the following statistical analysis: a. Descriptive statistics b. t-test for independent sample c. Reliability analysis (Cronbach's a) and d. Repeated Measures ANOVA. The findings and the evaluation of the study suggest that the teamwork method is the most appropriate to adopt in social skills learning for the last 3 grades of primary school and traditional dancing the best choice to make.

50. Challenging management of a child with an expanding pontine cavernous malformation

Abstract

We present a rare neurosurgical entity in a 9-year-old girl who presented with a three-day history of right-sided weakness and numbness. Her parents reported hospitalization six years ago with similar symptoms, due to a probable brainstem cavernous malformation. At that time, she underwent excision of a cortical lesion (probable cavernoma) and conservative management of the brainstem lesion with dexamethasone. Her brain magnetic resonance imaging scan in our hospital revealed a large cavernous malformation protruding into the 4th ventricle, with recent bleeding and mass effect to the pons, as well as another hypothalamic cavernoma. She was conservatively managed with intravenous dexamethasone and discharged home three days later with no deficits, on a tapering scheme of oral dexamethasone and instruction for physiotherapy and evaluation in a radiosurgery center. This case was discussed in our Department's Monthly Interinstitutional Pediatric Neuroscience Meeting. Α possible surgical intervention, if needed in the future, was considered as another option in the armamentarium of the management strategy for this potentially life-threatening lesion. A multidisciplinary approach is particularly helpful in determining the optimal management plan of challenging cases in Pediatric Neurosurgery.
