Single dish observations of NGC 1068 have shown the presence of a 3.4 μ m aliphatic hydrocarbon absorption feature similar to diffuse lines of sight towards the Galactic Centre. Both, the single dish spectra and the correlated fluxes obtained by MATISSE, present a broad absorption profile in the L band as well, that vary from baseline to baseline. A new CRIRES spectrum with a slit width comparable to the MATISSE aperture also reveals a wide feature around 3.4 μ m. We aim to analyse these features to learn about their origin and the distribution of the carriers across the source. We argue that all these features are caused by absorption of aliphatic hydrocarbons. The 3.4 μ m absorption features in the interferometric MATISSE correlated fluxes vary in optical depth over scales of 0.2-1.4 parsec in the plane of the sky, although probably placed at a larger distance from the AGN along the line of sight. The absorption in the extended areas seems to peak in the direction of the inner jet, close to the center of the ionization cone. These results support the theory of a clumpy torus. In comparing our results to the N-band surface density previously reported, we have discovered a mass ratio of carbonaceous to silicate olivine dust at ∼2 - 3.6 per cent, which is similar to those found in several lines of sight in the diffuse interstellar medium of our Galaxy. Context. NOTT (formerly Hi-5) is a new high-contrast L′ band (3.5–4.0 µm) beam combiner for the VLTI designed with an ambitious aim to be sensitive to young giant exoplanets down to 5 mas separation around nearby stars. The performance of nulling interferometers in these wavelengths is affected both by fundamental noise from the background and contributions of instrumental noise. This motivates the development of end-to-end simulations to optimize these instruments. Aims. The aim of this study is to enable a performance evaluation of NOTT and inform the design of such instruments with current and future infrastructures in mind, taking into account the different sources of noise and their correlation. Methods. SCIFYsim is an end-to-end simulator for single-mode-filtered beam combiners, with an emphasis on nulling interferometers. We use it to compute a covariance matrix of the errors. We then use statistical detection tests based on likelihood ratios to compute compound detection limits for the instrument. Results. With the current assumptions as to the performance of the wavefront correction systems, the errors are dominated by correlated instrumental errors down to stars of magnitude 6–7 in the L band, beyond which thermal background from the telescopes and relay system becomes dominant. Conclusions. SCIFYsim is suited to anticipating some of the challenges of design, tuning, operation, and signal processing for integrated-optics beam combiners. The detection limits found for this early version of NOTT simulation with the unit telescopes are compatible with detections at contrasts up to 105 in the L band at separations of 5–80 mas around bright stars. For the first time, we observed the emission of hot exozodiacal dust in L  band. We used the new instrument MATISSE at the Very Large Telescope Interferometer to detect the hot dust around κ Tuc with a significance of 3σ to 6σ at wavelengths between 3.37 and |$3.85\, {\mu {\rm m}}$| and a dust-to-star flux ratio of 5 to |$7{{{\ \rm per\ cent}}}$|⁠. We modelled the spectral energy distribution based on the new L band data alone and in combination with H band data published previously. In all cases we find |$0.58\, {\mu {\rm m}}$| grains of amorphous carbon to fit the κ Tuc observations the best, however, also nanometre or micrometre grains and other carbons or silicates reproduce the observations well. Since the H band data revealed a temporal variability, while our L band data were taken at a different epoch, we combine them in different ways. Depending on the approach, the best fits are obtained for a narrow dust ring at a stellar distance in the 0.1–029 au range and thus with a temperature between 940 and |$1430\, {\rm K}$|⁠. Within the 1σ uncertainty dust location and temperature are confined to |$0.032{\!-\!}1.18\, {\rm au}$| and |$600{\!-\!}2000\, {\rm K}$|⁠. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hot exozodiacal dust emissionwas detected in recent surveys around two dozen main-sequence stars at distances of less than 1 au using the H- and K-band interferometry. Due to the high contrast as well as the small angular distance between the circumstellar dust and the star, direct observation of this dust component is challenging. An alternative way to explore the hot exozodiacal dust is provided by mid-infrared interferometry. We analyse the L, M and N bands interferometric signature of this emission in order to find stronger constraints for the properties and the origin of the hot exozodiacal dust. Considering the parameters of nine debris disc systems derived previously, we model the discs in each of these bands. We find that the M band possesses the best conditions to detect hot dust emission, closely followed by L and N bands. The hot dust in three systems – HD 22484 (10 Tau), HD 102647 (β Leo) and HD 177724 (ζ Aql) – shows a strong signal in the visibility functions, which may even allow one to constrain the dust location. In particular, observations in the mid-infrared could help to determine whether the dust piles up at the sublimation radius or is located at radii up to 1 au. In addition, we explore observations of the hot exozodiacal dust with the upcoming mid-infrared interferometer Multi AperTure mid-Infrared SpectroScopic Experiment (MATISSE) at the Very Large Telescope Interferometer.
