11. Dialogical Interactions Mediated by Technology in Mathematics Education

Abstract

This paper discusses the results of a research that integrates Digital Interactive Storytelling (DIST), competence-oriented mathematical activities, and argumentation called DIST-M. The general aim is to support a reflective knowledge of mathematical concepts by implementing a digital educational device based on collaborative and dialogical activities proposed by researchers. Within a dialogical dimension of interactions (Bakhtin, 1981), argumentative practice is considered a social activity, where the acquisition and elaboration of new knowledge take place within a social space with multiple interlocutors in a dynamic process. The participants are engaged in constructing and negotiating mathematical meanings within a specific context. This dialogical approach to argumentation tends to create an authentic argumentative culture that is a system of implicit and explicit rules where the exchanges and interactions among participants require a joint elaboration of new meanings, within a given mathematical context, through a dialogical exchange. Learning and development result from a dialogical negotiation process during which new knowledge is developed and those already possessed are re-organized and systematized (Bakhtin, 1981; Vygotskij, 1978). In the current pandemic circumstances, technologies are the main tools to uphold the educational processes. Despite the fact that the DIST-M was implemented and tested before the COVID-19 era, its epistemic bases of dialogism mediated by technology could significantly keep alive the dialogic interaction in educational settings that have been heavily affected by the social distancing and promote mathematical thinking. The articles focus on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal n. 4, "Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all."

20. Effectiveness of Youth Mental Health First Aid Training for Parents at School

Abstract

Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) teaches adults to recognize signs and symptoms of youth mental illness and intervene using a five-step action plan. While studies have examined the effects of the YMHFA on school staff, limited attention has been given to parent trainees in the school setting. The present study examined the outcomes following YMHFA for parents at school using a prepost and 2-month follow-up design. Researchers collaborated with schools to offer six free trainings at no cost to parents. A total of 107 parents participated in the research by completing the pre- and postsurveys. In addition, 64 of them also completed the 2-month follow-up survey after completing the YMHFA training. Analysis of covariances results indicated that following the YMHFA training, parents' mental health literacy, help-seeking intentions, attitudes toward help-seeking, behavioral intentions to use the Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) action plan, and confidence in MHFA skills increased significantly. Stigma decreased significantly. All significant changes were maintained at the 2-month follow-up. Participants also provided feedback and suggestions. Thematic analysis was used to identify themes related to beneficial aspects of YMHFA and ways to improve the training for parents at school. Implications for engaging parents in school to support youth mental health are discussed.

Abstract

Therapeutic factors secreted by mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) promote angiogenesis in vivo. However, delivery of MSCs in the absence of a cytoprotective environment offers limited efficacy due to low cell retention, poor graft survival, and the nonmaintenance of a physiologically relevant dose of growth factors at the injury site. The delivery of stem cells on an extracellular matrix (ECM)-based platform alters cell behavior, including migration, proliferation, and paracrine activity, which are essential for angiogenesis. We demonstrate the biophysical and biochemical effects of preconditioning human MSCs (hMSCs) for 96 h on a three-dimensional (3D) ECM-based microgel platform. By altering the macromolecular concentration surrounding cells in the microgels, the proangiogenic phenotype of hMSCs can be tuned in a controlled manner through cell-driven changes in extracellular stiffness and "outside-in" integrin signaling. The softest microgels were tested at a low cell dose (5 × 104 cells) in a preclinical hindlimb ischemia model showing accelerated formation of new blood vessels with a reduced inflammatory response impeding progression of tissue damage. Molecular analysis revealed that several key mediators of angiogenesis were up-regulated in the low-cell-dose microgel group, providing a mechanistic insight of pathways modulated in vivo. Our research adds to current knowledge in cell-encapsulation strategies by highlighting the importance of preconditioning or priming the capacity of biomaterials through cell-material interactions. Obtaining therapeutic efficacy at a low cell dose in the microgel platform is a promising clinical route that would aid faster tissue repair and reperfusion in "no-option" patients suffering from peripheral arterial diseases, such as critical limb ischemia (CLI).

31. Safety of endoscopist-directed nurse-administered sedation in an Italian referral hospital: An audit of 2 years and 19,407 procedures.

Abstract

Balanced propofol sedation (BPS) administered by adequately trained non-anaesthesiologist personnel has gained popularity in GI endoscopy because of its shorter procedure and recovery time, high patient satisfaction, and low rate of adverse events (AEs), despite being considered controversial. We report data from an audit of endoscopist-directed (ED) nurse-administered sedation in an Italian referral hospital. Consecutive endoscopic procedures performed between 2020 and 2022 were considered. Under the guidance of the endoscopist, the nurse administered midazolam/fentanyl, followed by a progressive top-up dosage of a 10–20 mg bolus of propofol to achieve moderate to deep sedation. The endoscopists and nurses were all certified in our hospital with a continuous and scheduled training from 2006. During the study period, a total of 19,407 examinations (7,803 EGDS, 10,439 colonoscopies, 77 PEG, 697 EUS, and 365 ERCP) and 14,415 patients were included. Of these, 29.4 % of patients were classified as ASA I, 66.5 % as ASA II, and 5.1 % as ASA III. Hypotension was recorded in 1,293 (6 %) examinations and bradycardia in 176 (0.9 %) patients. Eleven patients (0.06 %) had minor respiratory adverse events. Two patients (0.01 %) had major AEs requiring orotracheal intubation. ED-BPS is safe in low-risk patients. 33. Asian American Parents' Beliefs about Helpful Strategies for Addressing Adolescent Mental Health Concerns at Home and School

Abstract

Asian American adolescents tend to underutilize mental health services at school and often do not receive the mental health services they need. Parents play an important role in youth mental health service utilization. However, few studies have examined Asian American parents' knowledge and beliefs about the help-seeking process. The present qualitative study explores Asian American parents' beliefs about helpful strategies for addressing youth mental illness (i.e., depression and eating disorders) with special attention to school-based strategies. Nineteen Asian American parents (M = 46.05 years, SD = 4.2) completed a semi-structured interview. The interviews were coded for themes to understand Asian American parents' beliefs about helpful strategies for addressing youth mental illness. Four general themes relating to ways of addressing youth mental health concerns emerged: providing social support, teaching and educating about mental health, seeking professional help, and identifying the problem and finding the cause. The roles that the school and culture play in each of these strategies are discussed. Implications are given for school-based mental health providers based on the finding.
