Abstract The Shenzhen–Zhongshan Bridge is a 24‐km‐long bridge and tunnel system, including a 6.8‐km‐long super cross section subsea tunnel. To solve the smoke exhaust problem of a super large cross‐section subsea tunnel, the tunnel has a new smoke exhaust system that combines a horizontal smoke exhaust cross section at the top and sidewall smoke exhaust holes. In order to evaluate the potential fire hazards of this type of tunnel, a 1:30 tunnel model was established and 140 small‐scale experiments on underwater tunnel fires were conducted. By changing the fire power, fire location, and fan operation mode, different scenarios of submarine immersed tunnel fire were simulated and the related key parameters such as fire smoke diffusion behavior and smoke temperature distribution were studied. On this basis, the optimal smoke control strategy was proposed for different fire scenarios. The research results indicate that the new smoke exhaust system can fully utilize the smoke flow characteristics, significantly improve smoke exhaust efficiency, and increase available evacuation time, thus further enhancing the fire safety of super large cross‐section subsea tunnels.

Subway tunnel flooding is one of the typical scenarios in urban waterlogging. When the emergency decision-making is untimely and inaccurate, it can lead to serious casualties. However, it is expected that through some responsive monitoring methods, an intelligent system can be constructed to achieve the real-time perception of the underground flood situation and to predict the process and intensity of the disaster. This study is based on a scale model experiment of flooding in straight subway tunnels. Firstly, it classified the basic patterns of the flood process. Some fitting formulas were respectively established for water depth and kinematic parameters. A calculation method for quickly predicting the flood inundation process was constructed. Secondly, this paper proposed a mode for the monitoring and early warning system. Based on the flood patterns and characteristic variables in subway tunnel flooding, the system can quickly determine the flow rate and entry position of flood and deduce the flood trend in the future at a relatively low cost. The system workflow was divided into three phases, and the mechanism for each phase of the system was sorted out. It could help to provide scientific and reliable information for emergency decision-making and gain time for the emergency response.

In this study, full-scale fire experiments were conducted in a hydropower station to investigate smoke propagation during tunnel construction. The flame height, smoke temperature and stratification, smoke descent and spread velocity were analyzed via measurements and on-site observations. The initial combustion stage was largely affected by ignition source during tunnel construction for diesel pool fire, and the average flame height in the fully developed stage could reach 1.4–2.1 m in experimental fire scenarios. The gradient of the smoke temperature evolution near the fire was the opposite for the upstream and downstream regions. The longitudinal temperature distribution was concentrated in a small range at the heights of the smoke layer, and gradually decreased by air entrainment as the height decreased, while further increasing in the lower half of the tunnel height in the near-fire region under heat radiation from the fire source. Moreover, distinct and stable smoke stratification formed during the fully developed combustion stage, and the smoke layer interface was at approximately half the tunnel height. Smoke descent was aggravated in the decay stage of combustion, and the fire risk remained high after the fully developed period. The smoke front spread velocity was empirically determined for the full-scale tunnel fire scenarios. Conclusions from full-scale experiments can support smoke control design and on-site fire emergency response plans for hydropower stations.

Fire accident seriously threatens the stable operation and personnel security in the subway station, and thermal stratification is an important factor used to determine smoke settlement. Therefore, this paper carried out a series of model experiments by altering the heat release rate (HRR), fire locations, and ventilation conditions. The vertical temperature of the central longitudinal axis was measured, and the S value representing that thermal stratification characteristic was calculated and compared under various fire scenarios. The results showed that the temperature changing curve in the vertical direction was significantly affected by ventilation volume, but it had little to do with the HRR and fire location. The increase of HRR could influence the value of S by enhancing the upper temperature for the whole space and heating the lower temperature near the fire. In addition, the S value decreased with the distance under different longitudinal fire source locations, whereas the variety of S was not monotonical with the deviating transverse distance. And the larger ventilation volume was conducive to restricting smoke diffusion and improving the value of S. This work could provide data support and theoretical reference for controlling smoke stratification under subway station fire.

With the development of urban transportation, metros have become an important means of travel for residents. However, casualty and economic loss might occur in metro systems due to various emergencies. Social media has gradually become the main way to express people’s needs, which provides a new analysis perspective for risk management in metros. This study takes the Zhengzhou Metro flood as an example and collects relevant social media data. Then, the analysis method of social media data evolution characteristics in metro emergencies is proposed. Finally, the evolution characteristics of social media data are analyzed from three aspects: spatiotemporal distribution, emotional distribution, and hot topics classification. The results show that: The temporal distribution of social media data is affected by the emergency process and official media; the spatial distribution of social media data reflects the distribution of stations affected by emergency and temporary shelters; timely and appropriate official media reports are conducive to guiding public emotions toward positive; and the key hot topics can be divided into disaster environment (DE), disaster impact (DI), disaster carrier (DC), emergency management (EM), positive comment (PC), and negative comment (NC). The proposed method can provide support for public opinion analysis and risk management in metro emergencies.

Hot smoke test is a key method for fire studies in metro systems. But most hot smoke test scenarios are conducted only once, which ignores the experiment uncertainties and errors. To quantify the uncertainty and repeatability of hot smoke tests in subway stations, seven experiments are repeated on a station platform. 120 thermistors are deployed among the platform to acquire the temperature curves in the experimental area. The concept of statistical analysis and functional analysis is adopted to study the error and turbulence caused by random effects. The results indicate that: (1) According to the fluctuation properties, the experiment area is divided into fire plume area and ceiling jet area. The data uncertainty of the fire plume area is significantly higher than the ceiling jet area. (2) The repeatability of temperature data in the fire plume area is poor. The difference between single experiment curve and average curve might reach 23%–24%. (3) The repeatability of the data in the ceiling jet area is much better with a deviation smaller than 7.8%. The validated experiment data presented in this work could be used for simulation model verification. The repeatability analysis method presented is applicable for other fire studies.

Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have become one of the most competitive energy storage technologies. However, the “thermal runaway” of LIBs leads to serious safety issues. Early safety warning of LIBs is a prerequisite for the widely applications of power battery and large-scale energy storage systems. As reported, hydrogen (H2) could be generated due to the reaction of lithium metal and polymers inside the battery. The generation of H2 is some time earlier than the “thermal runaway”. Therefore, the rapid detection of trace hydrogen is the most effective method for early safety warning of LIBs. Resistive hydrogen sensors have attracted attention in recent years. In addition, they could be placed inside the LIB package for the initial hydrogen detection. Here, we overview the recent key advances of resistive room temperature (RT) H2 sensors, and explore possible applications inside LIB. We explored the underlying sensing mechanisms for each type of H2 sensor. Additionally, we highlight the approaches to develop the H2 sensors in large scale. Finally, the present review presents a brief conclusion and perspectives about the resistive RT H2 sensors for early safety warning of LIBs.

Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is an emerging mosquito-transmitted alphavirus that leads to acute fever and chronic debilitating polyarthralgia. To date, the mechanism underlying chronic recurrent arthralgia is unknown. In the present study, newborn wild-type C57BL/6 mice were infected with CHIKV, and the virological and pathological features of CHIKV infection were analyzed over a period of 50 days. Acute viral infection was readily established by footpad inoculation of CHIKV at doses ranging from 10 plaque forming unit (PFU) to 106 PFU, during which inoculation dose-dependent viral RNA and skeletal muscle damage were detected in the foot tissues. However, persistent CHIKV was observed only when the mice were infected with a high dose of 106 PFU of CHIKV, in which low copy numbers (103−104) of viral positive strand RNA were continuously detectable in the feet from 29 to 50 dpi, along with a low level and progressive reduction in virus-specific CD8+ T cell responses. In contrast, viral negative strand RNA was detected at 50 dpi but not at 29 dpi and was accompanied by significant local skeletal muscle damage at 50 dpi when mild synovial hyperplasia appeared in the foot joints, although the damage was briefly repaired at 29 dpi. These results demonstrated that a high viral inoculation dose leads to viral persistence and progression to chronic tissue damage after recovery from acute infection. Taken together, these results provide a useful tool for elucidating the pathogenesis of persistent CHIKV infection and viral relapse-associated chronic arthritis. Author summary CHIKV infection has caused several outbreaks and affected millions of people in epidemic areas since the virus was originally isolated in 1952. CHIKV is transmitted by mosquitoes, resulting in acute diseases typically characterized by severe and debilitating arthritis, myalgia and fever, followed by persistent or recurrent joint and muscle pain that may last for months to years. The persistence of CHIKV in patients has been validated by clinical evidence, but it remains unclear how chronic and recurrent tissue injury are correlated with persistent viral infection. In this study, we established acute and chronic CHIKV infections in mice with different viral inoculation doses and identified the correlation of infection dose with outcomes resulting from CHIKV infection. We found that a high inoculation dose not only resulted in persistent viral infection but also led to a typical acute-recovery-relapse model of myositis and joint injury in mice. We also found that CHIKV RNA replication was interrupted after the acute phase, which might be related to the low antiviral T cell responses and relapse of histopathological injuries. Our study highlights the key factors involved in the clinical outcomes after CHIKV infection and provides new insights into the interaction between viral persistence and recurrent arthritis.

Abstract Objective SARS‐CoV‐2 has caused a worldwide pandemic of COVID‐19. The existence of prolonged SARS‐CoV‐2 positivity (PP) has further increased the burden on the health system. Since T cells are vital for viral control, we aimed to evaluate the characteristics of T‐cell responses associated with PP. Methods We established a PP cohort and two age‐ and sex‐matched control cohorts: a regular clinical recovery (CR) cohort and a healthy donor (HD) cohort. The mean time for RNA negativity conversion in the PP cohort was markedly longer than that in the CR cohort (66.2 vs 25.3 days), while the time from illness onset to sampling was not significantly different. T‐cell responses in the PP cohort were assayed, analysed and compared with those in the CR and HD cohorts by flow cytometry and ELISpot analysis of peripheral blood mononuclear cells. Results Compared with the CR cohort, the proliferation, activation and functional potential of CD8+ and CD4+ T cells in the PP cohort were not significantly different. However, the frequencies and counts of Teff and Tem in CD8+ but not in CD4+ T cells of the PP cohort were prominently lower. Moreover, a weaker SARS‐CoV‐2 N protein‐specific IFN‐γ+ T‐cell response and a higher frequency of Tregs were detected in the PP cohort. Conclusion Suppressed CD8+ T‐cell differentiation is associated with PP and may be an indicator for the prediction of prolonged SARS‐CoV‐2 positivity in COVID‐19 patients. The association between suppressed CD8+ T‐cell differentiation and elevated Tregs warrants studies in the future.

Efficient and reasonable supply chain management helps enterprises improve their efficiency, reduce costs, shorten cash flow times, and reduce enterprise risks. Risk prevention and control is a safety symbol for supply chains. To explore different influence degrees of multirisk factors and multilinks on enterprises, we propose a supply chain risk prevention and control model based on a fuzzy influence diagram and Hopfield neural network. Using the model that both calculates the risk size and occurrence probability of the supply chain and allows identifying various risk prevention and control levels, the supply chain risk is evaluated both objectively and fairly. We analyzed the theoretical and practical properties of supply chain risk prevention and control models and used it in the H company to illustrate this model.

For over 30 years, HIV/AIDS has wreaked havoc in the world. In the absence of an effective vaccine for HIV, development of new anti-HIV agents is urgently needed. We previously identified the antiviral activities of the scorpion-venom-peptide-derived mucroporin-M1 for three RNA viruses (measles viruses, SARS-CoV, and H5N1). In this investigation, a panel of scorpion venom peptides and their derivatives were designed and chosen for assessment of their anti-HIV activities. A new scorpion venom peptide derivative Kn2-7 was identified as the most potent anti-HIV-1 peptide by screening assays with an EC(50) value of 2.76 µg/ml (1.65 µM) and showed low cytotoxicity to host cells with a selective index (SI) of 13.93. Kn2-7 could inhibit all members of a standard reference panel of HIV-1 subtype B pseudotyped virus (PV) with CCR5-tropic and CXCR4-tropic NL4-3 PV strain. Furthermore, it also inhibited a CXCR4-tropic replication-competent strain of HIV-1 subtype B virus. Binding assay of Kn2-7 to HIV-1 PV by Octet Red system suggested the anti-HIV-1 activity was correlated with a direct interaction between Kn2-7 and HIV-1 envelope. These results demonstrated that peptide Kn2-7 could inhibit HIV-1 by direct interaction with viral particle and may become a promising candidate compound for further development of microbicide against HIV-1.

The induction of a strong mucosal immune response is essential to building successful HIV vaccines. Highly attenuated recombinant HIV vaccinia virus can be administered mucosally, but even high doses of immunization have been found unable to induce strong mucosal antibody responses. In order to solve this problem, we studied the interactions of recombinant HIV vaccinia virus Tiantan strain (rVTT-gagpol) in mucosal epithelial cells (specifically Caco-2 cell layers) and in BALB/c mice. We evaluated the impact of this virus on HIV antigen delivery and specific immune responses. The results demonstrated that rVTT-gagpol was able to infect Caco-2 cell layers and both the nasal and lung epithelia in BALB/c mice. The progeny viruses and expressed p24 were released mainly from apical surfaces. In BALB/c mice, the infection was limited to the respiratory system and was not observed in the blood. This showed that polarized distribution limited antigen delivery into the whole body and thus limited immune response. To see if this could be improved upon, we stimulated unpolarized budding of the virus and HIV antigens by treating both Caco-2 cells and BALB/c mice with colchicine. We found that, in BALB/c mice, the degree of infection and antigen expression in the epithelia went up. As a result, specific immune responses increased correspondingly. Together, these data suggest that polarized budding limits antigen delivery and immune responses, but unpolarized distribution can increase antigen expression and delivery and thus enhance specific immune responses. This conclusion can be used to optimize mucosal HIV vaccine strategies.

Spill fires usually occur with liquid fuel storage and transportation, which may pose a threat to process safety and environmental protection. Analysis on the liquid layer spread and burning behavior is vital for preventing and mitigating spill fire accidents. In the study, a number of heptane continuous spill fire experiments on a fireproof glass sheet were conducted to better understand the spreading and burning of continuous spill fires. In the experiments, the liquid surface area, burning rate and heat transfer between liquid layer and the glass sheet were analyzed. The results showed that the heptane burning rate of spill fires was lower than that for pool fires of the same burning size. The experimental data showed that the radiative penetration through the liquid layer was mainly responsible for the lower burning rate at the quasi-steady burning phase. Based on the heat transfer process, a modified burning rate model of spill fires by considering the heat loss of liquid layer was developed and validated by the experimental data.
