Measurements of the global surface solar irradiation and its direct and diffuse components performed at three Egyptian sites (Aswan, Cairo, and Port Said) are used to test the ability of two published decomposition models to estimate the hourly direct normal irradiance from the measured global horizontal one in cloud-free conditions. The tested models failed to reproduce the temporal variability of the measurements, which we show to be partly induced by the large variability of the atmospheric content in aerosols. We propose a revised formulation of the decomposition models that takes into account the aerosol optical depth (AOD) at 1000 nm derived from onsite measurements. It leads to a significant reduction of the bias and root mean square deviation of the original models and this at the three Egyptian sites. However, because the AOD is rarely measured at the meteorological stations, we also quantify the performance of the revised models when the AOD is either derived from the MODIS observations or obtained by the products from Copernicus Atmospheric Monitoring Service (CAMS). Probably because of their finer temporal resolution that makes them more apt to reproduce the rapid variations of the AOD, the best results are obtained with the CAMS products. Therefore, we recommend using a combination of the revised decomposition models and these CAMS products to estimate the hourly direct normal irradiance in areas such as Egypt where aerosols are ubiquitous. Note that the improved decomposition models are generally applicable in all-sky conditions, although their benefit has been demonstrated to be significant, and probably limited to, cloud-free conditions.

A database containing the global and diffuse components of the surface solar hourly irradiation measured from 1 January 2004 to 31 December 2010 at eight stations of the Egyptian Meteorological Authority is presented. For three of these sites (Cairo, Aswan and El-Farafra), the direct component is also available. In addition, a series of meteorological variables including surface pressure, relative humidity, temperature, wind speed and direction is provided at the same hourly resolution at all stations. The details of the experimental sites and instruments used for the acquisition are given. Special attention is paid to the quality of the data and the procedure applied to flag suspicious or erroneous measurements is described in detail. Between 88 and 99 % of the daytime measurements are validated by this quality control. Except at Barrani where the number is lower (13 500), between 20 000 and 29 000 measurements of global and diffuse hourly irradiation are available at all sites for the 7-year period. Similarly, from 9000 to 13 000 measurements of direct hourly irradiation values are provided for the three sites where this component is measured. With its high temporal resolution this consistent irradiation and meteorological database constitutes a reliable source to estimate the potential of solar energy in Egypt. It is also adapted to the study of high-frequency atmospheric processes such as the impact of aerosols on atmospheric radiative transfer. It is planned to update regularly the current 2004–2010 database, which has been placed on the PANGAEA repository (doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.848804) and contains the individual meteorological and irradiation data files of the eight stations.

Recently, solar power generation is significantly contributed to growing renewable sources of electricity all over the world. The reliability and availability improvement of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems has become a critical area of interest for researchers. Reliability, availability, and maintainability (RAM) is an engineering tool used to address operational and safety issues of systems. It aims to identify the weakest areas of a system which will improve the overall system reliability. In this paper, RAM analysis of grid-connected solar-PV system is presented. Elaborate RAM analysis of these systems is presented starting from the sub-assembly level to the subsystem level, then the overall system. Further, an improved Reliability Block Diagram is presented to estimate the RAM performance of seven practical grid-connected solar-PV systems. The required input data are obtained from worldwide databases of failures, and repair of various subassemblies comprising various meteorological conditions. A novel approach is also presented in order to estimate the best probability density function for each sub-assembly. The monitoring of the critical subassemblies of a PV system will increase the possibility not only for improving the availability of the system, but also to optimize the maintenance costs. Additionally, it will inform the operators about the status of the various subsystems of the system.

This study investigates a novel approach for enhancing methylene blue (MB) removal from water using a composite of endophytic Trichoderma mate and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). For the first time, a unique combination of simplex-lattice design and decision tree learning algorithm was employed to optimize MB removal. This innovative approach effectively identified the optimal composite ratio of hyphal mate (0.5354 g/L) and MWCNTs (0.4646 g/L) for maximizing MB removal, which achieved remarkable removal efficiency ranging from 63.50 to 95.78 % depending on the combination used. The DT model further demonstrated promising potential for predicting MB removal efficiency. SEM revealed a unique hybrid material formed by the intertwining or entrapment of MWCNTs within the hyphal network of Trichoderma mate. FT-IR analysis confirmed the presence of novel functional groups on the MWCNTs' surface at 2438.79 and 528.25 cm−1, likely due to interactions with the endophytic fungi's biomolecules. These functional groups presumably act as reducing and stabilizing agents, promoting efficient MB adsorption. This research paves the way for utilizing the combined biological and chemical approach (fungal biomass and MWCNTs) in bioremediation applications. The findings suggest significant potential for practical applications in wastewater treatment, providing an eco-friendly and cost-effective method for dye removal. Furthermore, the proposed method shows promise for scaling up to industrial wastewater treatment and applicability in resource-limited settings, offering a sustainable solution for global water pollution challenges. Further investigations with larger datasets incorporating additional influencing factors are necessary to refine the predictive power of the DT model for practical applications.

Water and salt stresses are among the most important global problems that limit the growth and production of several crops. The current study aims at the possibility of mitigating the effect of deficit irrigation of common bean plants growing in saline lands by foliar spraying with selenium via the assessment of growth, productivity, physiological, and biochemical measurements. In our study, two field-based trials were conducted in 2017 and 2018 to examine the influence of three selenium (Se) concentrations (0 (Se0), 25 (Se25), and 50 mg L−1 (Se50)) on common bean plants grown under full irrigation (I100 = 100% of the crop evapotranspiration; ETc) and deficit irrigation (I80 = 80% of ETc, and I60 = 60% of ETc). Bean plants exposed to water stress led to a notable reduction in growth, yield, water productivity (WP), water status, SPAD value, and chlorophyll a fluorescence features (Fv/Fm and PI). However, foliar spraying of selenium at 25 or 50 mg L−1 on stressed bean plants attenuated the harmful effects of water stress. The findings suggest that foliage application of 25 or 50 mg L−1 selenium to common bean plants grown under I80 resulted in a higher membrane stability index, relative water content, SPAD chlorophyll index, and better efficiency of photosystem II (Fv/Fm, and PI). Water deficit at 20% increased the WP by 17%; however, supplementation of 25 or 50 mg L−1 selenium mediated further increases in WP up to 26%. Exogenous application of selenium (25 mg L−1 or 50 mg L−1) to water-stressed bean plants elevated the plant defense system component, given that it increased the free proline, ascorbic acid, and glutathione levels, as well as antioxidant enzymes (SOD, APX, GPX, and CAT). It was concluded that the application of higher levels (25 or/and 50 mg L−1) of Se improves plant water status as well as the growth and yield of common beans cultivated in saline soil.

Numerous plant metabolites, especially amino acids, are accumulated as a result of stress. These amino acids are crucial for plant metabolism and development and have historically been viewed as the building blocks of proteins. Several studies suggested that there is a link between proline buildup and exposure plants to stress. Proline performs important functions under stress in addition to be a great osmolyte, antioxidant enzyme, acts as an antioxidant defense and signaling molecules. Two field trials were during two successive winter seasons (2020/2021 and 2021/2022). The effects of proline foliar application (0, 100, 200, 300 and 400 mg L−1) and irrigation water levels (irrigation by 100, 80 and 60% of crop water requirements, CWR, CWR100, CWR80 and CWR60, respectively) on plant pigments, antioxidants activity, yield traits and nutrient contents of wheat were assessed. The experiment was designed in a split-plot involving 4 replicates. Drought stress (CWR80 and CWR60) led to reductions in photosynthetic pigments, and yield components. Under severe water stress (CWR60), proline 200 and 300 mg L−1 recorded the highest values of chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, and total pigments. Application of proline 300 mg L−1 was the potent practice for enhancing the antioxidant activity% (DPPH radical scavenging) and phenols content under CWR100 and CWR80. Indole acetic acid (IAA) possessed the maximum values with proline 200 mg L−1 under all irrigation patterns. Under severe deficit water (CWR60), without proline spraying (for super oxide dismutase), 200, 300 or 400 mg L−1 proline (for peroxidase) and 200 or 400 mg L−1 proline (for polyphenol oxidase) recorded the highest values. Spraying proline 300 mg L−1 achieved the highest values of grain number spike−1, weight of 1000 grains and grain yield ha−1 under different irrigation regimes. In conclusion, proline is considered a good mitigator for drought stress, due to it increased wheat plant tolerance to water deficiency throughout improving plant physiology and consequently yields quantity and quality. The most efficient concentrations of proline for coping the adverse impact of drought were 200 and 300 mg L−1.

Biodiesel is a sustainable, and renewable alternative to fossil fuels that can be produced from various biological sources with the aid of lipases. This study developed a simple and novel fungal system for lipase biosynthesis to be used for catalyzing the oily residuals into biodiesel, employing the artificial neural network (ANN), and semi-solid-state fermentation (SSSF). Nigella sativa was selected among agro-industrial oily residuals as a substrate for lipase biosynthesis by Aspergillus flavipes MH47297. The effect of cultural humidity (X1), the surfactant; Brij 35 (X2), and inoculum density (X3) on lipase biosynthesis were researched based on the matrix of Box-Behnken design (BBD). The ANN together with a new fungal candidate and SSSF were then applied for the first time to model the biosynthesis process of lipase. The optimum predicted cultural conditions varied according to the model. The optimum predicted conditions were estimated separately by BBD (X1 = 5.8 ml water/g, X2 = 46.6 μl/g, and X3 = 62156610 spore/g) and ANN (X1 = 5.4 ml water/g, X2 = 54.2 μl/g, and X3 = 100000000 spore/g) models. Based on the modeling process, the response of lipase was calculated to be 214.95 (BBD) and 217.72 U (ANN), which revealed high consistency with the experimental lipase yield (209.13 ± 3.27 U for BBD, and 218 ± 2.01 U for ANN). Despite both models showing high accuracy, ANN was more accurate and surpassed the BBD model. Gas chromatography analysis showed that lipase successfully converted corn oil to biodiesel (29.5 mg/l).

It has already been well established that long exposure to low doses of pesticides is linked to consumer risks. So, this study purposed to investigate the amounts of pesticide residues and potential health risks associated with them. The risk assessment was determined by two methods: 1. Pesticide toxicity index (PTI) depending on the maximum residue limit (MRL) to calculate the hazard quotient (HQ); 2. Health risk assessment (HR) using acceptable daily intake (ADI) and estimated daily intake (EDI) to calculate the health index (HI). Pesticide residues were estimated in 176 samples of the most popularly consumed vegetables collected from major retailers and markets in Dakahlia, Egypt (during 2018). There were 111 samples contaminated with pesticide residues (63.1%), of which 29 samples (16.48%) were higher than the maximum residue limits (MRL). Residues of 23 compounds were found in the analyzed samples, of which chlorpyrifos was the most frequent in 33 samples (18.75%); while cypermethrin was the lowest (detected in one sample). According to WHO toxicity classification, 12 of the detected pesticides were moderately hazardous (class II), seven pesticides belonged to class III (slightly hazardous), three compounds were found in class U (unlikely to pose an acute hazard with normal use), while carbofuran is a highly toxic compound (class Ib). Also, the obtained data revealed that, the HI’s for the individual pesticides ranged from 0.0018 to 64.0% of ADI indicates no risk of adverse effects following exposure to the individual pesticides. The cumulative exposure amounts (PTI values) ranged from 1.58 in snake cucumber to 128.44 in potato tubers, indicating that, the combined risk index of pesticide residues was a significant health risk for consumers according to the individual risk index. It can be concluded that there is a need for strict regulation and regular monitoring of pesticide residues in foodstuff for consumers’ health protection.

Abstract Background The objective of this work is to identify the most proper herbicidal treatment on sugar beet to compare different single weed control herbicide doses on sugar beet traits and associated weeds as well as yield and quality under sandy soil conditions. Therefore, two field experiments were conducted during the winter seasons of 2017/2018 and 2018/2019 at the Experimental Farm of the National Research Centre, El-Beheira Governorate. Tigro at 1.0 and 0.750 l fed−1, Betasana-Trio at 0.675 and at 0.9 l fed−1, Select Super at 0.5 and 0.375 l fed−1 and Betanal MaxxPro at 0.5 l fed−1 besides the unweeded and hand weeded twice were used. Results The results showed that the herbicides Betasana-Trio at 0.9 l fed−1, Tigro at 1.0 l fed−1 and Betasana-Trio at 0.675 l fed−1 when sprayed twice could effectively and/or completely eliminate the broadleaved weeds associated with sugar beet plants. Moreover, the results indicated and confirmed that Tigro and Betasana-Trio herbicides are effective in controlling broadleaved weeds. Similar tendency was recorded for the narrow-leaved weeds, where Select Super or Betanal MaxxPro at 0.5 l fed−1 as well as Select Super at 0.375 l fed−1 could completely eliminate or minimize the narrow-leaved weeds associated with sugar beet plants. The greatest significant root length, root diameters and root yield plant−1 were recorded when hand weeding twice followed by Betanal MaxxPro at 0.5 l fed−1 without significant differences. Gross sugar % ranged between 12.08 and 15 .7% and extractable sugar % ranged between 8.97 and 13.8% for Betasana-Trio at 0.09 l fed−1 and Betanal MaxxPro at 0.5 l fed−1. Conclusion Betanal MaxxPro gave the highest values of root and biological yield ton fed−1. Betanal MaxxPro followed by hand weeding treatment twice resulted in the greatest sugar yield fed−1. The highest sugar yield resulted from the herbicidal treatment with Betanal MaxxPro or Tigro at 1.0 l fed−1, which gave the greatest gross and extractable sugar yield fed−1 and exceeded the hand weeding treatment by 10.4 and 7.8%.

Abstract Background and objective Salinity stress is an important abiotic stress that affect adversely on crop production, so using of natural compounds to improve plant tolerance to stress is very important. Materials and methods Two field experiments were conducted during two winter seasons of 2014/2015 and 2015/2016 at Tag El-Ezz Research Station of Agricultural Research Centre, Dakahliea Egypt. Field evaluation of the efficiency of weed-control treatments (unweeded, oxadiargyl, and two hand hoeing) and thiamine levels (0, 50, 75, and 100 mg/l) and their interactive effects on weeds, faba bean growth, yield, yield attributes, and some biochemical constitutes of seeds under salinity levels (1.37, 3.31, and 4.51 dS m−1). Results Data revealed that number and dry weight of broad-leaved, narrow-leaved, and total weeds were significantly reduced by increasing salinity levels of soil from 1.37 to 4.51 dS m−1. In addition, the highest salinity level 4.51 dS m−1 caused the highest significant decreases in growth, yield, and yield attributes of faba bean. Meanwhile, increasing salinity level from 1.3 to 4.51 dS m−1caused significant increases in total soluble sugar, free amino acids, and proline contents of faba bean plant. Two hand hoeing treatment achieved the highest weed depression expressed in the lowest dry matter of total weeds. Also, two hand hoeing was the most effective weed control treatment in increasing growth, yield, yield attributes, and some biochemical constitutes of faba bean seeds followed by of oxadiargyl treatment. No significant differences between application of two hand-hoeing and oxadiargyl treatment on all studied parameters. Foliar treatment of faba bean plants with thiamine different concentrations could alleviate the harmful effects of different salinity levels. Conclusion We could conclude that foliar application of thiamine at the rate of 100 mg/l caused the highest increases in all growth and yield parameters under investigation of faba bean plant. Interaction of 100 mg/l thiamine treatment and two hand hoeing was the most effective treatments on enhancing faba bean growth, yield, and its attributes under salinity levels. Results also indicated that free amino and proline works to increase faba bean plants ability to withstand salinity stress.

A new ceramide, named cladamide ( 1 ), in addition to cinnamic acid ( 2 ), para -coumaric acid ( 3 ), stigmasterol-3- O - β -D-glucoside ( 4 ), and uracil ( 5 ), was isolated from the white beans culture of Cladosporium cladosporioides , a marine-derived endohpytic fungus isolated from the leaves of the mangrove, Avicennia marina (Forssk.) Vierh. Structure elucidation of compound 1 was established on the basis of extensive 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopic techniques in combination with HR-ESI-MS. The ability of the isolated compounds to inhibit acetylcholine esterase was evaluated. Compound 3 showed the highest acetylcholine esterase inhibitory activity (IC 50  = 0.057 ± 0.003 µM), followed by compound 4 (IC 50  = 0.068 ± 0.003 µM) and compound 1 (IC 50  = 0.099 ± 0.005 µM) compared to donepezil, the positive control, (IC 50  = 0.044 ± 0.002 µM). Compounds 2 and 5 showed lower activity (IC 50  = 0.182 ± 0.009 and 0.236 ± 0.012 µM, respectively). The results were further validated by molecular docking study.

Two new compounds, named 3,4-dimethoxyphenyl α-d-ribofuranoside (1) and 3β-(β-d-glucopyranosyloxy)olean-12-ene-23,28,30-trioic acid (2), together with thirteen known compounds, were isolated from the white beans culture of the marine derived endophytic fungus Aspergillus amstelodami. Structure elucidation of the new compounds was carried out by one-, two-dimensional spectroscopy, and high resolution electrospray ionization mass. The antimelanogenic and anti-allergic activity of the isolated compounds were investigated. Compounds 4, 7, 1, 3, 11, 6 and 9 selectively suppressed melanin production in B16 melanoma cells, using arbutin as a positive control. Their IC 50 values were 30.8±5.57, 38.5±6.08, 52.6±6.64, 98.0±1.16, 100.4±3.05, 112.0±0.22 and 144.7±2.35 μm, respectively, while that of arbutin was 151.7±1.27 μm. The tested compounds did not show any significant anti-allergic activity in RBL-2H3 cells, as compared to quercetin., (© 2019 Wiley-VHCA AG, Zurich, Switzerland.)

Background: Nephrotoxicity is a major hazard complicating the use of platinum based drugs (PBD), which can hinder using higher doses protocols to maximize the therapeutic gain. Shortage of serum creatinine level as an accurate biomarker for acute kidney injuries (AKI) necessitates searching for novel biomarkers with better sensitivity and specificity in patients on PBD., Methods: In a prospective cohort design, 132 patients receiving PBD were selected for the study. AKI was diagnosed by continuous follow up of serum creatinine level according to Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) guidelines 2012. Serum creatinine and urinary biomarkers (KIM-1, NGAL and cystatin C) was measured in the day of treatment and for 3 days after PBD cycle., Results: AKI occurred in 35 patients (26.52% of patients). KIM-1, Cystatin C, and NGAL showed significant increase in samples collected in the day of AKI in comparison to their corresponding basal levels (P <  0.0001). In addition, significant increase in urinary levels of the biomarkers in samples collected 1 day before AKI in comparison to their basal levels (P <  0.0001, P <  0.0001, and P = 0.013 for KIM-1, NGAL and Cystatin C respectively). Furthermore KIM-1 data showed a significant increase 2 days before serum creatinine rise in comparison to the corresponding KIM-1 levels in patients who developed AKI (P = 0.001)., Conclusions: Urinary KIM-1, Cystatin C and NGAL can predict PBD induced AKI in earlier stages than serum createnine. KIM-1 is the most sensitive biomarker for early detection of AKI in patients receiving PBD.

Mammary ductoscope allows visualization of the breast ductal wall and sampling of the abnormal area for diagnostic purposes. We are reporting our center experience in application of mammary ductoscope in detecting the underlying etiology of pathologic nipple discharge. Between November 2005 and December 2006 a total of 54 women, with spontaneous persistent nonlactational unilateral uniductal nipple discharge of no palpable lesions and negative breast sono-mammography, were included in the study for morphologic assessment of ductal epithelium, ductal lavage and ductoscopically guided procedures as punch biopsy and ductoscopically guided microdochectomy. Forty-one patients (76%) with nipple discharge were positive ductoscopically. Thirteen patients (24%) appeared normal. Ductoscopic lavage has a much more cellular yield than ordinary squeezing cytology. Ductal thickening by the ductoscope (11 cases) revealed to be hyperplasia on pathology (five cases), papilloma (two cases), atypical ductal hyperplasia (two cases), ductal carcinoma in situ (one case), and invasive breast carcinoma (one case). There was a significant association between intraductal visual observations and histopathologic diagnosis. Mammary Ductoscope is a promising tool in management of pathologic nipple discharge. Biopsy and ablation techniques can be performed during ductoscopy with correlation between visual findings and histopathology, but there are still some limitations of in clinical practice.

We have examined in rats the effects of Org 9935 (4,5-dihydro-6-(5,6-dimethoxy-benzo[b]-thien-2-yl)-methyl-1-(2H)-p yridazinone), a selective inhibitor of type 3 phosphodiesterase (phosphodiesterase 3) and Org 30029 (N-hydroxy-5,6-dimethoxy-benzo[b]-thiophene-2-carboximidamide HCl), an inhibitor of phosphodiesterase 3/4 on rat plasma insulin and glucose concentrations in pentobarbitone-anaesthetised rats and on insulin secretion by rat isolated islets. We have also compared their effects on islet phosphodiesterase activity. Org 9935 (0.1 and 1.0 mg kg(-1) i.v. 15 min previously) dose dependently elevated fasting and post-glucose (0.25 g kg(-1) i.v.) plasma insulin concentrations. Org 30029 in a dose of 10 mg kg(-1), but not 1 mg kg(-1), also increased plasma insulin concentrations. Neither drug modified either fasting or post-glucose plasma glucose concentrations. Each drug augmented glucose-induced insulin release by rat isolated islets in a static incubation system, with approximate EC50 values of 1.5 microM for Org 9935 and 20 microM for Org 30029. Phosphodiesterase activity, in both supernatant and pellet fractions of islet homogenates, was inhibited concentration dependently by each drug. Although the shape of the concentration-inhibition curve for Org 30029 precluded estimation of an IC50 value, this drug was clearly much less potent than Org 9935 (IC50 about 50 nM) in inhibiting islet phosphodiesterase activity. We conclude that the increase in plasma insulin produced by each drug is a consequence of augmented insulin secretion, probably secondary to inhibition of phosphodiesterase 3 in the islet beta cell, with a resultant elevation in cAMP. The failure of the drugs to modify plasma glucose may be due to concomitant inhibition of cAMP phosphodiesterase in liver and adipose tissue.
