MITCA (homework implementation method) was born with the purpose of turning homework into an educational resource capable of improving the self-regulation of learning and the school engagement of students. In this article, following the current theoretical framework, we evaluate the impact of the MITCA method on school engagement in students in the 5th and 6th years of Primary Education. While the control group of students who did not participate in the 12 weeks of MITCA (N = 431; 61% of 5th grade) worsened significantly in emotional, behavioral, and cognitive engagement, these pre-post differences do not reach significance for the group that has participated in MITCA, even observing a tendency to improve. After the intervention, the students who participated in MITCA (N = 533; 50.6% of 5th grade) reported greater emotional and behavioral engagement than the students in the control group. MITCA students showed positive emotions, were happier in school and were more interested in the classroom, paid more attention in class, and were more attentive to school rules. The conditions of the tasks' prescription proposed by MITCA would not only restrain the lack of engagement but would also improve students' emotional and behavioral engagement in school found in the last years of Primary Education. In the light of the results, a series of educational strategies related to the characteristics of these tasks, such as the frequency of prescription and the type of correction are proposed.

Playa lakes that developed in semi-arid regions are sensitive to water input reductions, which may be influenced not only by climate changes and human management, but also by changes in the size of the watershed. We conducted an interdisciplinary study combining structural, geomorphic, sedimentological, mineralogical and hydrological analyses to better understand the evolution of the Fuente de Piedra (FdP) playa lake in southern Spain. By using previously published temperature and precipitation reconstructions, we assessed the potential evapotranspiration and runoff to estimate the maximum lake level during the FdP playa-lake lifespan (>35 ka). Our results indicate that the FdP playa-lake level never exceeded 5 m, although deposits at its north-eastern margin are up to 15 m above the current lake bed at present. These lacustrine deposits are slightly tilted towards the south-west. The electrical conductivity profiles of groundwater on the FdP's shore and in its surroundings reveal a more pronounced interface between brackish water and brine in the northern part of the basin compared to the southern part. This implies that saline water once occupied the northern playa-lake margin in an area that is hardly ever flooded at present. The presence of reworked gypsum in the sedimentary sequence of the southern margin (down to a depth of 14 m) indicates substantial erosion of prior gypsum deposits that are possibly redistributed from northern deposition areas. Altogether, our data suggest a south-westerly displacement of the playa-lake depocentre caused by an uplift of the eastern area and subsidence of the south-western area. This shift is congruent with the combined effect of both the La Nava sinistral–normal fault and the Las Latas dextral–normal fault at the eastern and southern margins of the FdP playa lake. Consequently, the FdP flooded surface mostly remained constant and in equilibrium with climate variables and its watershed along its lifespan. The south-westerly displacement of the flooded surface was provoked by the recent tectonic activity.

Abstract Background C3H10T1/2 is a mesenchymal cell line capable of differentiating into osteoblasts, adipocytes and chondrocytes. The differentiation of these cells into osteoblasts is modulated by various transcription factors, such as RUNX2. Additionally, several interconnected signaling pathways, including the NOTCH pathway, play a crucial role in modulating their differentiation into mature bone cells. We have investigated the roles of DLK1 and DLK2, two non-canonical inhibitory ligands of NOTCH receptors, in the osteogenic differentiation of C3H10T1/2 cells. Results Our results corroborate existing evidence that DLK1 acts as an inhibitor of osteogenesis. In contrast, we demonstrate for the first time that DLK2 enhances this differentiation process. Additionally, our data suggest that NOTCH2, 3 and 4 receptors may promote osteogenesis, as indicated by their increased expression during this process, whereas NOTCH1 expression, which decreases during cell differentiation, might inhibit osteogenesis. Moreover, treatment with DAPT, a NOTCH signaling inhibitor, impeded osteogenic differentiation. We have confirmed the increase in ERK1/2 MAPK and p38 MAPK phosphorylation in C3H10T1/2 cells induced to differentiate to osteoblasts. Our new findings reveal increased ERK1/2 MAPK phosphorylation in differentiated C3H10T1/2 cells with a decrease in DLK1 expression or an overexpression of DLK2, which is coincident with the behavior of those transfectants where we have detected an increase in osteogenic differentiation. Additionally, p38 MAPK phosphorylation increases in differentiated C3H10T1/2 cells with reduced DLK1 levels. Conclusions Our results suggest that DLK1 may inhibit osteogenesis, while DLK2 may promote it, by modulating NOTCH signaling and the phosphorylation of ERK1/2 and p38 MAPK pathways. Given the established inhibitory effect of DLK proteins on NOTCH signaling, these new insights could pave the way for developing future therapeutic strategies aimed at treating bone diseases.

Abstract Background U.S. Latinos experienced disproportionate COVID-19 impacts in terms of morbidity and mortality. Vaccination against COVID-19 is an important strategy for mitigating health impacts, and yet, vaccine uptake was slower among U.S. Latino adults compared to other racial/ethnic groups. Vaccine hesitancy has been a significant barrier within Latino communities, and exposure to misinformation has been associated with negative attitudes toward vaccination. While some COVID-19 mitigation efforts have included community-based outreach, few studies have explored the impact of community-based digital messaging in Spanish to counter COVID-19 misinformation, build trust, and promote vaccination. To address this gap, we conducted a one-year repeated cross-sectional study to assess changes in COVID-19 vaccine uptake, intentions, and perceived norms, as well as barriers to accessing reliable information and levels of trust in COVID-19 information sources among Latino adults exposed to Brigada Digital de Salud social media content. This culturally-tailored content disseminated on Facebook, Instagram, and X platforms was amplified by community health workers and partners, and focused on COVID-19 risk and prevention, vaccine safety and efficacy, and correcting related misinformation. Results Statistically significant increases in COVID-19 vaccination and intentions to vaccinate children were observed from May 2022 (wave 1) to April 2023 (wave 2). Among perceived difficulties accessing information, respondents indicated the most difficulty in judging the reliability of COVID-19 information in the media; however, a statistically significant decrease in perceived difficulty was observed between waves. With regard to trust in COVID-19 information sources, levels of trust were highest for healthcare providers in both waves, and there were statistically significant increases in trust in the FDA to ensure COVID-19 vaccine safety and trust in the federal government to ensure child COVID-19 vaccine safety at wave 2. Conclusions Social media messaging by trusted community-based sources shows promise as a strategy for combating health misinformation and ameliorating information access gaps for language minority populations. This digital approach represents an important tool for deploying critical information to underserved populations in public health emergency and crisis contexts, and for supporting changes in attitudes, trust, and behaviors to improve health outcomes.

Background Preterm birth contributes to adverse mental health outcomes of parents dealing with a premature neonate. The main objec-tive of this study is to determine whether music therapy (MT) songwriting during the infants’ stay in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) is superior to standard care in reducing the risk of postpartum depression in high-risk parents of preterm children throughout the hospital treatment. The secondary objectives include assessment of effectiveness of MT in other aspects of mental health (anxiety level, perceived stress, mental wellbeing, coping, resilience). Furthermore, this trial will evaluate the medical and social factors that may be associated with the effects of MT songwriting. Participants and procedure The study design is a sequential mixed method study with a dominant status QUAN to qual. The quantitative trial was designed as a parallel, multicenter, pragmatic, randomized controlled trial. The qualitative study is a descriptive phenomeno-logical study that seeks to understand the lived experiences of participants exposed to songwriting. Participants are parents of premature infants hospitalized in NICU (106 families) in 5 hospitals, in Colombia and Poland. Intervention: 3 MT song-writing sessions per week across 3 weeks. Primary outcome: the risk of postnatal depression; secondary outcomes: anxiety level, mental wellbeing, resilience, stress, coping. Results The results will be analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. Conclusions This study will provide a report on the effectiveness of MT songwriting on mental health in at-risk parents of preterm infants.

Desde los años 80, al menos, el empuje que han potenciado las arqueologías feministas y de género en el conocimiento sobre nuestro pasado nos tiene inmersa en un proceso de cuestionamiento del imaginario colectivo sobre las sociedades del Paleolítico. Poner el foco en las mujeres de pasado y repensar comportamientos y relaciones sociales es una deuda histórica en la que todavía debemos seguir avanzando. Y los museos, en especial aquellos cuya temática incluye este periodo de la Prehistoria, trabajan en la ardua tarea de reformular sus narrativas y museografías, y adecuarlas a estas realidades pasadas. El Museo de Altamira lleva más de una década reflexionando, investigando y divulgando este conocimiento sobre las mujeres del Paleolítico, además de trasladarlo progresivamente a su exposición permanente, teniendo en cuenta las dificultades de las renovaciones museográficas. ABSTRACT: At least since the 1980s, the push given by feminist and gender archaeology to the knowledge of our past has led us to question the collective imaginary of Palaeolithic societies. Focusing on the women of the past and rethinking behaviour and social relations is a historical debt in which we still need to make progress. And museums, especially those whose subject matter includes this period of Prehistory, are working on the arduous task of reformulating their narratives and museographies and adapting them to these past realities. The Museum of Altamira has been reflecting on, researching and disseminating this knowledge about Palaeolithic women for more than a decade, as well as progressively transferring it to its permanent exhibition, taking into account the difficulties of museum renovations.

This dataset was collected from single-institution retrospective examinations from Latin American patients. Patients were anonymized and contains 15 DCE-MR imaging sequences: pre-contrast T1 fat saturated Dynamic (d0), five postcontrast T1 fat saturated dynamics (d1 to d5), T1 with no fat saturation (t1), T2 with no fat saturation (t2), the apparent diffusion coefficient image (ADC) and the diffusion image (Diff), and five post-contrast phase sequences (f1 to f5). All image sequences were obtained and stored using the standard DICOM 3.0 and converted to TIFF format to reduce required storage space. Besides, all images were obtained using multiple 1.5T scanners and all contrast agents were gadolinium-based with dosages between 0.014 and 0.016 l/mol under different acquisition conditions as they were obtained retrospectively. Each patient data was filtered according to their available clinical finding, were benign and malignant lesions were prioritized to ensure at least one relevant clinical finding across all images. Thereupon, the data contains balanced train, test and validation sets in terms of benign/malignant lesions, as well as non-dense/dense tissue. Additionally, annotations per image are provided with lesionlocation (x and y coordinates) BIRADS and tissue density. This data can be used for multiple purposes, including image synthesis, image characterization, lesion classification, tissue segmentation, among others.

This article is oriented to the degradation of nickel in an ionic state at laboratory level from synthetic water made with nickel sulfate, using the electrocoagulation process with aluminum cathodes and modifying this process by the addition of the Fenton reagent, which results from the combination of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and ferrous sulfate (FeSO4) being this reagent a catalyst and oxo-coagulant agent, The efficiency of this reagent will be compared with the typical treatment with aluminum sulfate, which is a typical process based on ion exchange/coagulation at the same percentage concentrations as the Fenton reagent. For this purpose, the optimum conditions of the advanced electrocoagulation process were determined, which consisted of determining the concentrations of Fenton’s reagent at concentrations of 150 ppm, 300 ppm, and 450 ppm, in addition to the operating variables such as pH of 8 and 10, voltage of 17.5 V and 19 V and their reaction time, which were compared with aluminum sulfate at 300 ppm, 600 ppm, and 900 ppm. The results obtained with respect to the typical treatment were 0% nickel degradation. However, with the advanced oxidation treatment, an average reduction of 97.5% was found at the conditions of 19 V, pH 10, and Fenton 150 ppm in a time of 30 min.

Currently, the genus Zenopsis, also known as silver John Dory, comprises at least five valid species with a wide range of distribution. However, recent studies have proposed the existence of a new Zenopsis species inhabiting the Indian Ocean, and a preliminary search in the Barcode of Life Database reveals the presence of different barcode index numbers (BIN) for the nominal species Zenopsis conchifer. In the Southwest Atlantic Ocean (SWA), Z. conchifer is the only species reported so far. Therefore, the aim of this work was to evaluate, at the molecular level, the potential taxonomic diversity within the genus Zenopsis and to assess if the species occurring in the SWA corresponds with Z. conchifer. Using data available in worldwide genetic databases, a maximum likelihood tree, a BIN, and an automatic barcode gap discovery analysis were carried out. Additionally, specimens sampled from the SWA were morphologically compared with specimens from different parts of its distribution using available data. The specific identity at the molecular level of specimens occurring in the SWA was confirmed as Z. conchifer. The results of the molecular analysis highlight the existence of hidden specific diversity within the genus.

BackgroundUnderstanding the predictors of metabolic disorders in persons with HIV/HCV coinfection post-HCV therapy is crucial for improving patient outcomes. Since immune checkpoint proteins are usually upregulated in these persons with HIV/HCV coinfection, we aimed to evaluate the association between plasma immune checkpoint proteins at baseline (before HCV therapy) and metabolic disturbances during the follow-up (about 5 years after successful HCV treatment) in persons with HIV/HCV coinfection.MethodsWe performed a retrospective study on 80 persons with HIV/HCV coinfection with advanced fibrosis or cirrhosis who cleared HCV infection after successful HCV therapy and were followed for about 5 years after completion of HCV treatment. Plasma samples were collected at baseline. Immune checkpoint proteins were analyzed using a Luminex 200™ analyzer. Outcomes were the development of a metabolic event (type 2 diabetes mellitus and/or dyslipidemia) and the change in Triglycerides and glucose (TyG) index.ResultsDuring follow-up, 21 (26%) patients developed metabolic events (type 2 diabetes mellitus/dyslipidemia), and 29 (46.0%) patients had an increase in TyG during the follow-up. Low baseline values of BTLA and LAG-3, two immune checkpoint proteins, were associated with the development of metabolic events (aAMR = 0.69 and aAMR = 0.71, respectively) and with increases in TyG values (aAMR = 0.72 and aAMR = 0.70, respectively). In addition, other immune checkpoint proteins were also inversely associated with increases in TyG.ConclusionWe discovered that low plasma levels of BTLA and LAG-3 before HCV therapy significantly correlate with an increased risk of developing metabolic disorders after treatment.

Abstract Animal advocacy is a complex phenomenon. As a social movement encompassing diverse moral stances and lifestyle choices, veganism and vegetarianism (veg*) are at its core, and animal testing raises as a notably contentious issue within its members. This paper addresses this critical topic. Employing data from an international quantitative survey conducted between June and July 2021, our research explores how ethical vegans and vegetarians responded during the COVID-19 crisis. By comparing the experiences and choices between the two groups, we aimed to understand the variances in attitudes and behaviors in the face of an ethical dilemma, highlighting the interplay between personal beliefs and social pressures in times of a health crisis. Our findings reveal stark contrasts in how vegans and vegetarians navigated the pandemic; vegans displayed less conformity yet experienced a significant compromise of their ethical values, particularly in their overwhelming acceptance of vaccination. This study enhances the field of veg* research and social movement studies by exploring how a social crisis shapes members’ behaviors and perspectives. Our findings also contribute to a better understanding of the challenges and prejudices that a minority group such as vegans may face and how they cope with the pressure to go against the mainstream at a time when society is polarized by a single discourse that goes against their moral values.

Abstract Prion diseases are a group of rapidly progressing neurodegenerative disorders caused by the misfolding of the endogenous prion protein (PrPC) into a pathogenic form (PrPSc). This process, despite being the central event underlying these disorders, remains largely unknown at a molecular level, precluding the prediction of new potential outbreaks or interspecies transmission incidents. In this work, we present a method to generate bona fide recombinant prions de novo, allowing a comprehensive analysis of protein misfolding across a wide range of prion proteins from mammalian species. We study more than 380 different prion proteins from mammals and classify them according to their spontaneous misfolding propensity and their conformational variability. This study aims to address fundamental questions in the prion research field such as defining infectivity determinants, interspecies transmission barriers or the structural influence of specific amino acids and provide invaluable information for future diagnosis and therapy applications.

Las fallas en las uniones soldadas constituyen un problema frecuente a enfrentar por los especialistas y técnicos, presentándose como un desafío en lo económico y la fiabilidad en la producción, pero cuya solución requiere enfocarlo como problema científico, dada su esencia fenomenológica. En el presente trabajo se aborda el estudio de determinación de las causas de falla en uniones soldadas ocurridas en los soportes de un sistema de tuberías, las cuales fueron realizadas con el proceso SMAW. Para ello fue extraída una muestra, de la zona siniestrada con ayuda de disco refrigerado, cuidando en ello no alterar el material para mantener las evidencias de las posibles causas de falla. A la muestra de la unión le fueron realizados los siguientes análisis: Inspección visual, análisis químico por espectrometría de emisión óptica, ensayos de tensión del material base, además de macrografía y metalografía de la unión soldadas. Se concluyó que la causa de falla tiene su origen en el deficiente procedimiento de soldadura aplicado, así como deficiencias en la ejecución de la soldadura

Abstract Through GWAS studies we identified PATJ associated with functional outcome after ischemic stroke (IS). The aim of this study was to determine PATJ role in brain endothelial cells (ECs) in the context of stroke outcome. PATJ expression analyses in patient’s blood revealed that: (i) the risk allele of rs76221407 induces higher expression of PATJ, (ii) PATJ is downregulated 24 h after IS, and (iii) its expression is significantly lower in those patients with functional independence, measured at 3 months with the modified Rankin scale ((mRS) ≤2), compared to those patients with marked disability (mRS = 4–5). In mice brains, PATJ was also downregulated in the injured hemisphere at 48 h after ischemia. Oxygen-glucose deprivation and hypoxia-dependent of Hypoxia Inducible Factor-1α also caused PATJ depletion in ECs. To study the effects of PATJ downregulation, we generated PATJ-knockdown human microvascular ECs. Their transcriptomic profile evidenced a complex cell reprogramming involving Notch, TGF-ß, PI3K/Akt, and Hippo signaling that translates in morphological and functional changes compatible with endothelial to mesenchymal transition (EndMT). PATJ depletion caused loss of cell-cell adhesion, upregulation of metalloproteases, actin cytoskeleton remodeling, cytoplasmic accumulation of the signal transducer C-terminal transmembrane Mucin 1 (MUC1-C) and downregulation of Notch and Hippo signaling. The EndMT phenotype of PATJ-depleted cells was associated with the nuclear recruitment of MUC1-C, YAP/TAZ, β-catenin, and ZEB1. Our results suggest that PATJ downregulation 24 h after IS promotes EndMT, an initial step prior to secondary activation of a pro-angiogenic program. This effect is associated with functional independence suggesting that activation of EndMT shortly after stroke onset is beneficial for stroke recovery.

Abstract Background Geographical variations in mood and psychotic disorders have been found in upper-income countries. We looked for geographic variation in these disorders in Colombia, a middle-income country. We analyzed electronic health records from the Clínica San Juan de Dios Manizales (CSJDM), which provides comprehensive mental healthcare for the one million inhabitants of Caldas. Methods We constructed a friction surface map of Caldas and used it to calculate the travel-time to the CSJDM for 16,295 patients who had received an initial diagnosis of mood or psychotic disorder. Using a zero-inflated negative binomial regression model, we determined the relationship between travel-time and incidence, stratified by disease severity. We employed spatial scan statistics to look for patient clusters. Results We show that travel-times (for driving) to the CSJDM are less than 1 h for ~50% of the population and more than 4 h for ~10%. We find a distance-decay relationship for outpatients, but not for inpatients: for every hour increase in travel-time, the number of expected outpatient cases decreases by 20% (RR = 0.80, 95% confidence interval [0.71, 0.89], p = 5.67E-05). We find nine clusters/hotspots of inpatients. Conclusions Our results reveal inequities in access to healthcare: many individuals requiring only outpatient treatment may live too far from the CSJDM to access healthcare. Targeting of resources to comprehensively identify severely ill individuals living in the observed hotspots could further address treatment inequities and enable investigations to determine factors generating these hotspots.

ZnO nanoparticles functionalized with APTES were obtained to evaluate their CH4 and CO2 adsorption at 298 K in a range between 0 and 10 bar. First, ZnO nanoparticles were obtained by a precipitation method and subsequently coated with (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES). As a preliminary study, the results were compared with previously reported naked nanoparticles in order to evaluate the influence of APTES coating on CO2 selectivity. UV-Vis, FT-IR spectroscopy, TGA, XRD, TEM/EDX, XPS and N2 adsorption at 77 K were used to characterize the evaluated material. It was observed that the amount of gas adsorbed on the surface of the nanostructure was very small in comparison with other materials traditionally used for this purpose but slightly higher than those obtained in naked nanoparticles evaluated in previous studies. The affinity of CO2 for the amines groups of the APTES ligand was also discussed.

Introduction Evidence from observational and genetic studies suggests a bidirectional relationship between loneliness and psychosis. To our knowledge, no previous study has assessed the association between loneliness in childhood and first-episode psychosis (FEP). Objectives We aimed to assess the association between loneliness in childhood and the odds of FEP and clinical variables of interest (i.e., diagnosis and clinical and functional severity) in FEP and to explore gender differences in this association. Methods This was an observational, case-control study, based on the AGES-CM cohort, a longitudinal prospective study including patients with FEP ages 7-40, their first-degree relatives, and an age- and sex-matched sample of controls in seven university hospitals in the region of Madrid. We assessed loneliness in childhood with the question “Have you ever felt lonely for more than 6 months before the age of 12” and objetive social isolation with the peer relationships item from the childhood subscale of the Premorbid Adjustment Scale. We conducted logistic and linear regression analyses to assess the association between childhood loneliness and i) the odds of presenting a FEP and ii) clinical variables of interest (diagnosis and scores on positive, negative, general, depressive, and manic symptoms and functioning), while adjusting for demographic variables. Results The study sample comprised 285 patients with FEP (32.6% female, age 24.50 ± 6.2 years) and 546 controls (48.7% female, age 25.93 ± 5.5 years). Loneliness in childhood was associated with increased odds of FEP (adjusted odds ratio; aOR: 2.17, 95% CI [1.40-3.51], p=.002). Las prótesis peanas marcaron un cambio importante en la historia del manejo de la disfunción eréctil, principalmente en hombres refractarios a otros métodos existentes. En la actualidad se cuenta con tres opciones de implantes de prótesis peneanas: prótesis de dos piezas, de tres piezas y las semirrígidas; cada una de ellas con una indicación específica. Existen también diferentes tipos de abordajes quirúrgicos, de los cuales los más usados son el abordaje penoescrotal y suprapúbico. En cuanto a las complicaciones quirúrgicas, la infección es una de las más frecuentes, por lo que se han desarrollado implantes impregnados con antibióticos e implantes irrigables con solución antibiótica y/o antifúngicas a elección con el fin de mitigar la infección, puesto que se ha reportado que los dispositivos recubiertos reducen la incidencia de infección del dispositivo en aproximadamente un 50%, al igual que la implementación de otras técnicas como la de no tocar para reducir la infección. La prótesis peneana es una estrategia efectiva para el tratamiento de la disfunción eréctil en hombres refractarios a otras intervenciones.

Introduction. Diet-based interventions may be a culturally acceptable option to decrease mercury levels and thus prevent the adverse effects of this metal on population health. Selenium is an element present in Colombian geology that can act as a chelator, decreasing mercury concentrations in the human body. Objective. To identify potentially useful selenium-rich foods to control the effects of mercury exposure among Afro-Colombians. Materials and methods. A cross-sectional study was carried out with 320 individuals from five municipalities of Chocó. They were asked about the frequency of consumption of selenium-rich foods, and their association with mercury concentrations in hair was estimated with multiple robust regression. Results. Guava, whole wheat flour, strawberries, cow liver, spinach and yeast extract were the foods with higher consumption. Walnuts, whole wheat flour, and yeast extract were identified in multiple robust regression as foods to consider in future interventions. Conclusion. It is proposed that the banana juice, the pineapple colada, the borojó (Borojoa patinoi) sorbet, the cucas, and the enyucado are basic elements for a culturally acceptable intervention.

This study addresses the persistent challenge of polysulfide dissolution in lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries by introducing magnesium oxide (MgO) nanoparticles as a novel additive. MgO was integrated with sulfur using a scalable process involving solid-state melt diffusion treatment followed by planetary ball milling. XRD measurements confirmed that sulfur (S8) retains its orthorhombic crystalline structure (space group Fddd) following the MgO incorporation, with minimal peak shifts indicating slight lattice distortion, while the increased peak intensity suggests enhanced crystallinity due to MgO acting as a nucleation site. Additionally, Raman spectroscopy demonstrated sulfur’s characteristic vibrational modes consistent with group theory (point group D2h) and highlighted multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT′s) D, G, and 2D bands, with a low ID/IG ratio (0.47), which indicated low defects and high crystallinity in the prepared cathode. The S–MgO composite cathode exhibited superior electrochemical behavior, with an initial discharge capacity (950 mA h g−1 at 0.1 C), significantly improved compared to pristine sulfur’s. The presence of MgO effectively mitigated the polysulfide shuttle effect by trapping polysulfides, leading to enhanced stability over 400 cycles and the consistent coulombic efficiency of over 99.5%. After 400 cycles, EDS and SEM analyses confirmed the structural integrity of the electrode, with only minor fractures and slight sulfur content loss. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy further confirmed the enhanced performance.

In contemporary construction, the prevalence of vibration serviceability issues in lightweight and slender structures has become increasingly common, owing to advancements in building materials and construction methods. While these structures often meet the criteria for ultimate limit states, they can still elicit complaints due to excessive vibrations induced by human activity. To address this challenge, the integral resonant control (IRC) technique has emerged as a favored approach for actively damping vibrations in various systems. This study introduces a fresh perspective by proposing the implementation of a multi-input multi-output (MIMO) IRC scheme for active vibration control (AVC) specifically tailored for pedestrian structures utilizing inertial mass actuators. This application of MIMO IRC for AVC represents a novel advancement in the field, offering a new solution to address vibration issues in lightweight and slender structures. Building upon a common framework and design methodology outlined in previous research, this work presents a novel application of MIMO IRC for AVC. The designed controller undergoes rigorous testing and is implemented on a laboratory floor structure to validate its efficacy. The outcomes of this study demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed MIMO IRC scheme in actively damping vibrations, thereby enhancing the serviceability and comfort levels of lightweight and slender structures subjected to human-induced excitations.

Abstract Schizophrenia is a debilitating psychiatric disorder associated with a reduced fertility and decreased life expectancy, yet common predisposing variation substantially contributes to the onset of the disorder, which poses an evolutionary paradox. Previous research has suggested balanced selection, a mechanism by which schizophrenia risk alleles could also provide advantages under certain environments, as a reliable explanation. However, recent studies have shown strong evidence against a positive selection of predisposing loci. Furthermore, evolutionary pressures on schizophrenia risk alleles could have changed throughout human history as new environments emerged. Here in this study, we used 1000 Genomes Project data to explore the relationship between schizophrenia predisposing loci and recent natural selection (RNS) signatures after the human diaspora out of Africa around 100,000 years ago on a genome-wide scale. We found evidence for significant enrichment of RNS markers in derived alleles arisen during human evolution conferring protection to schizophrenia. Moreover, both partitioned heritability and gene set enrichment analyses of mapped genes from schizophrenia predisposing loci subject to RNS revealed a lower involvement in brain and neuronal related functions compared to those not subject to RNS. Taken together, our results suggest non-antagonistic pleiotropy as a likely mechanism behind RNS that could explain the persistence of schizophrenia common predisposing variation in human populations due to its association to other non-psychiatric phenotypes.
