Abstract Biodegradability testing in soil helps to identify safe synthetic organic chemicals but is still obscured by the formation of soil-bound ‘non-extractable’ residues (NERs). Present-day methodologies using radiocarbon or stable (13C, 15N) isotope labeling cannot easily differentiate soil-bound parent chemicals or transformation products (xenoNERs) from harmless soil-bound biomolecules of microbial degraders (bioNERs). Hypothesizing a minimal retention of hydrogen in biomolecules, we here apply stable hydrogen isotope – deuterium (D) – labeling to unravel the origin of NERs. Soil biodegradation tests with D- and 13C-labeled 2,4-D, glyphosate and sulfamethoxazole reveal consistently lower proportions of applied D than 13C in total NERs and in amino acids, a quantitative biomarker for bioNERs. Soil-bound D thus mostly represents xenoNERs and not bioNERs, enabling an efficient quantification of xenoNERs by just measuring the total bound D. D or tritium (T) labeling could thus improve the value of biodegradability testing results for diverse organic chemicals forming soil-bound residues.

The main assumption of the conducted research was the selection of appropriate heat treatment parameters to obtain the best possible resistance to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) and the highest strength properties of the extruded profiles. The work selected the temperature and time of one- and two-stage treatment of the EN AW-7021 alloy based on aging curves. Tests carried out for samples after aging at 135°C for 24 h and two-stage aging at 90°C/8 h + 135°C/8 h revealed the highest resistance to SCC. The 7021 alloy, after heat treatment at 90°C/8 h + 135°C/16 h, reached the highest tensile strength of 534MPa. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations showed slight differences in the finely dispersed nucleoids between the selected parameters of the artificial aging process.

A new version of the popular RGB model has been developed to meet the expectations of users of greenness and whiteness assessment metrics. It has been called “RGBfast” due to its simplicity and significant assessment automation. The criteria were limited to six key parameters that are easy to objectively express numerically, which combine various features of analytical method determining its functionality and sustainability. A customized Excel sheet applies the entire procedure itself after entering the appropriate input data. The assessment outcomes are presented in concise and easy-to-interpret tables, which can be used as pictograms. RGBfast enables reliable comparison of alternative procedures dedicated to the same purpose, thus can be a good support during the validation of new methods and literature reviews. As a case study, the model was applied to compare five methods for the determination of phosphate using different types of (bio)sensors. Subtle differences between them have been captured and analyzed. The mathematical structure of the model can be modified in the future, for example to take potential opportunities offered by artificial intelligence technology.

Many species of Dalbergia, the source of highly prized rosewood, are threatened with extinction, a situation compounded by climate change. Accurate estimates of how suitable habitat will be impacted by global change are needed to inform their sustainable management. We selected five commercially exploited species endemic to humid eastern Madagascar (D. baronii, D. louvelii, D. maritima, D. normandii, and D. orientalis) to explore the potential value of species distribution modeling for understanding factors influencing their current distributions and estimating future patterns of suitable habitat, using MaxEnt and locality information for 715 taxonomically and spatially validated occurrences. Eight bioclimatic variables were used for modeling; projections were made under three scenarios for climate change and two for CO2 emissions. The distribution of each of the five species is primarily influenced by precipitation seasonality. Their potential geographical range is predicted to decrease by 2100 (-5% to -33%) under the optimistic CO2 scenario (RCP 2.6) except for a slight expansion of D. normandii (+2%), and by -14% to -58% under the pessimistic scenario (RCP 8.5). Our results show that suitable habitat will likely decrease with climate change, even within protected areas. They provide valuable information for future application of IUCN Red List criterion A to exploited species with fragmented distributions, targeting ex-situ conservation and management, and guiding restoration, reforestation, and other actions to establish and reinforce Dalbergia populations in areas where they are more likely to persist during climate change over the present century and beyond.

Abstract Knowing about the antibiotic resistance, serotypes, and virulence-associated genes of Group B Streptococcus for epidemiological and vaccine development is very important. We have determined antimicrobial susceptibility patterns, serotype, and virulence profiles. The antibiotic susceptibility was assessed for a total of 421 Streptococcus agalactiae strains, isolated from pregnant women and neonates. Then, 89 erythromycin and/or clindamycin-resistant strains (82 isolates obtained from pregnant women and seven isolates derived from neonates) were assessed in detail. PCR techniques were used to identify the studied strains, perform serotyping, and assess genes encoding selected virulence factors. Phenotypic and genotypic methods determined the mechanisms of resistance. All tested strains were sensitive to penicillin and levofloxacin. The constitutive MLSB mechanism (78.2%), inducible MLSB mechanism (14.9%), and M phenotype (6.9%) were identified in the macrolide-resistant strains. It was found that macrolide resistance is strongly associated with the presence of the ermB gene and serotype V. FbsA, fbsB, fbsC, scpB, and lmb formed the most recurring pattern of genes among the nine surface proteins whose genes were analysed. A minority (7.9%) of the GBS isolates exhibited resistance to lincosamides and macrolides, or either, including those that comprised the hypervirulent clone ST-17. The representative antibiotic resistance pattern consisted of erythromycin, clindamycin, and tetracycline resistance (71.9%). An increase in the fraction of strains resistant to macrolides and lincosamides indicates the need for monitoring both the susceptibility of these strains and the presence of the ST-17 clone.

There are currently no prophylactic vaccines licensed to protect against Lassa fever caused by Lassa virus (LASV) infection. The Emergent BioSolutions (EBS) vaccine candidate, EBS-LASV, is being developed for the prevention of Lassa fever. EBS-LASV is a live-attenuated recombinant Vesicular Stomatitis Virus (rVSV)-vectored vaccine encoding the surface glycoprotein complex (GPC) from LASV and has two attenuating vector modifications: a gene shuffle of the VSV N gene and a deletion of the VSV G gene. Preclinical studies were performed to evaluate EBS-LASV’s neurovirulence potential following intracranial (IC) injection and to determine the biodistribution and vector replication following intramuscular (IM) inoculation in mice. In addition, the potential EBS-LASV toxicity was assessed using repeated-dose IM EBS-LASV administration to rabbits. All mice receiving the IC injection of EBS-LASV survived, while mice administered the unattenuated control vector did not. The vaccine was only detected in the muscle at the injection site, draining lymph nodes, and the spleen over the first week following IM EBS-LASV injection in mice, with no detectable plasma viremia. No toxicity was observed in rabbits receiving a three-dose regimen of EBS-LASV. These studies demonstrate that EBS-LASV is safe when administered to animals and supported a first-in-human dose-escalation, safety, and immunogenicity clinical study.

The injection of mafic magma into a hydrous felsic magma chamber is a potential trigger mechanism for bimodal explosive volcanism. As H2O is the most abundant volatile component in magmas, the interaction and the degassing behavior of mildly peralkaline hydrous rhyolitic melt in contact with hydrous basaltic melt were investigated by decompression experiments. Preparatory hydration experiments and bimodal magma decompression experiments, as well as reference experiments, were carried out in an internally heated argon pressure vessel. Pre-hydrated rhyolite and basalt cylinders were perfectly contacted together in a precious-metal capsule, heated to 1348 K at 210 MPa, and thermally equilibrated for 10 min. The initial sample properties were determined by a bimodal reference experiment, quenched immediately after equilibration. To simulate the magma ascent, three bimodal samples and a decompression experiment with two contacted rhyolite cylinders for testing the experimental setup were decompressed with 0.17 or 1.7 MPa s−1 to the final pressure of 100 MPa and then quenched. All decompression experiments resulted in vesiculated samples. The H2O vesicles observed in the decompressed sample of the monomodal rhyolite–rhyolite reference experiment are homogeneously distributed throughout the sample. The former interface between the contacted glass cylinders is invisible after decompression and quench. This reference experiment proves that the two-cylinder design does not influence the degassing behavior of the hydrous melt, e.g., an increased formation of vesicles at possible nucleation sites at the contact plane of the cylinders. The undecompressed bimodal rhyolite–basalt sample shows crystal-free rhyolitic glass, whereas 3 µm sized idiomorphic magnetite crystals coexist with glass in the basaltic part of the sample. Within the 10 min run time, a ∼ 300 µm wide hybrid composition zone developed between the hydrous rhyolitic and basaltic endmembers, caused by diffusion-induced mixing processes. Decompression and quenching of the bimodal melts resulted in vesiculated glass samples. A ∼ 100 µm wide zone of alkali-depleted rhyolitic glass as part of the ∼ 300–560 µm wide hybrid zone is covered with an enhanced number of H2O vesicles compared to the pristine rhyolitic and basaltic glass volumes. We suggest that this enhanced vesiculated zone forms by a rapid diffusional loss of alkalis from the mildly peralkaline rhyolitic melt into the basaltic melt of the sample. The reduced alkali concentration significantly reduces the H2O solubility of the rhyolitic melt. This process enhances the H2O supersaturation necessary for vesicle formation during decompression. In summary, the new findings imply that convective magma ascent driven by the injection of hot basaltic magma into a hydrous peralkaline rhyolitic melt reservoir leads to enhanced H2O vesicle formation near the melt interface and thus to efficient degassing. This in turn can accelerate buoyancy-driven magma ascent and mingling and mixing processes that induce further degassing and potentially trigger explosive volcanic eruptions.

Introduction: Keratoconus (KTCN) is a corneal ectasia, characterized by a progressive thinning and protrusion of the cornea, with a complex etiology involving genetic, behavioral, lifestyle, and environmental factors. Previous studies indicated that microRNAs (miRNAs) could be involved in KTCN pathogenesis. This in silico study aimed to identify precursor microRNAs (pre-miRNAs) differentially expressed in KTCN corneas and to characterize mature miRNAs and their target genes.Materials and methods: Expression levels of pre-miRNAs were retrieved from our previously obtained RNA sequencing data of 25 KTCN and 25 non-KTCN human corneas (PMID:28145428, PMID:30994860). Differential expression with FDR ≤0.01 and ≥1.5-fold changes were considered significant. Lists of target genes (target score ≥90) of mature miRNAs were obtained from miRDB. Revealed up-/downregulated miRNAs and their target genes were assessed in databases and literature. Enrichment analyses were completed applying the DAVID database.Results: From a total of 47 pre-miRNAs, six were remarkably upregulated (MIR184, MIR548I1, MIR200A, MIR6728, MIR429, MIR1299) and four downregulated (MIR6081, MIR27B, MIR23B, MIR23A) in KTCN corneas. Out of the 1,409 target genes, 220 genes with decreased and 57 genes with increased expression levels in KTCN samples vs non-KTCN samples were found. The extracellular matrix (ECM) organization, response to mechanical stimulus, regulation of cell shape, and signal transduction processes/pathways were identified as distinctive in enrichment analyses. Also, processes associated with the regulation of transcription and DNA binding were listed.Conclusion: Indicated miRNAs and their target genes might be involved in KTCN pathogenesis via disruption of crucial molecular processes, including ECM organization and signal transduction.

Considering the benefits of understanding the circulation patterns of the shelf, it is not surprising that there are numerous studies of the Texas Shelf circulation patterns. Given that previous studies were focused on the low-frequency variability of the circulation which is upcoast (northeast flow) in the summer and downcoast (southwest flow) especially on the inner shelf in the non-summer seasons, this study investigates the weather band (2–15 days) variability of the Texas Shelf near-surface circulation pattern. Current meter data at 1.5 m below the sea surface from the inner, mid, and outer shelves were analyzed. This study demonstrated that there are high-frequency current reversals within the weather band in each season. From the estimated persistence of the currents during reversals, the inner and mid shelf currents are predominantly downcoast in the non-summer seasons and upcoast in the summer season whereas the outer shelf currents are mostly upcoast all year round. The Wavelets analysis of the currents revealed that most of the variabilities on the inner and mid shelf regions were within the 4-12-day band whereas on the outer shelf the dominant variability was within the 3–8-day band. From the cross-spectra analysis of both the currents and wind data, it was determined that the influence of the wind was more dominant on the inner and mid shelf regions at the 8–15-day band than on the outer shelf where the contribution of the wind is prevalent at the 2–4-day band.

The cell cycle consists of a series of orchestrated events controlled by molecular sensing and feedback networks that ultimately drive the duplication of total DNA and the subsequent division of a single parent cell into two daughter cells. The ability to block the cell cycle and synchronize cells within the same phase has helped understand factors that control cell cycle progression and the properties of each individual phase. Intriguingly, when cells are released from a synchronized state, they do not maintain synchronized cell division and rapidly become asynchronous. The rate and factors that control cellular desynchronization remain largely unknown. In this study, using a combination of experiments and simulations, we investigate the desynchronization properties in cervical cancer cells (HeLa) starting from the G1/S boundary following double-thymidine block. Propidium iodide (PI) DNA staining was used to perform flow cytometry cell cycle analysis at regular 8 hour intervals, and a custom auto-similarity function to assess the desynchronization and quantify the convergence to an asynchronous state. In parallel, we developed a single-cell phenomenological model the returns the DNA amount across the cell cycle stages and fitted the parameters using experimental data. Simulations of population of cells reveal that the cell cycle desynchronization rate is primarily sensitive to the variability of cell cycle duration within a population. To validate the model prediction, we introduced lipopolysaccharide (LPS) to increase cell cycle noise. Indeed, we observed an increase in cell cycle variability under LPS stimulation in HeLa cells, accompanied with an enhanced rate of cell cycle desynchronization. Our results show that the desynchronization rate of artificially synchronized in-phase cell populations can be used a proxy of the degree of variance in cell cycle periodicity, an underexplored axis in cell cycle research.

IntroductionThe development of molecular biology methods and their application in microbial research allowed the detection of many new pathogens that cause urinary tract infections (UTIs). Despite the advances of using new research techniques, the etiopathogenesis of UTIs, especially in patients undergoing dialysis and patients after kidney transplantation, is still not fully understood.MethodsThis study aimed to characterize and compare the composition of the bacterial element of the urinary tract microbiome between the groups of patients undergoing dialysis (n = 50) and patients after kidney transplantation (n = 50), with positive or negative urine culture, compared to healthy individuals (n = 50).ResultsAsymptomatic bacteriuria was observed in 30% of the urine cultures of patients undergoing dialysis and patients after kidney transplantation, with Escherichia coli as the most dominant microorganism (73%) detected with the use of classical microbiology techniques. However, differences in the bacterial composition of the urine samples between the evaluated patient groups were demonstrated using the amplicon sequencing. Finegoldia, Leptotrichia, and Corynebacterium were found to be discriminative bacteria genera in patients after dialysis and kidney transplantation compared to the control group. In addition, in all of urine samples, including those without bacteriuria in classical urine culture, many types of bacteria have been identified using 16S rRNA sequencing.DiscussionThe revealed microbial characteristics may form the basis in searching for new diagnostic markers in treatment of patients undergoing dialysis and patients after kidney transplantation.

Young, low-mass brown dwarfs orbiting early-type stars, with low mass ratios ( q ≲ 0.01), appear to be intrinsically rare and present a formation dilemma: could a handful of these objects be the highest-mass outcomes of “planetary” formation channels (bottom up within a protoplanetary disk), or are they more representative of the lowest-mass “failed binaries” (formed via disk fragmentation or core fragmentation)? Additionally, their orbits can yield model-independent dynamical masses, and when paired with wide wavelength coverage and accurate system age estimates, can constrain evolutionary models in a regime where the models have a wide dispersion depending on the initial conditions. We present new interferometric observations of the 16 Myr substellar companion HD 136164 Ab (HIP 75056 Ab) made with the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI)/GRAVITY and an updated orbit fit including proper motion measurements from the Hipparcos–Gaia Catalog of Accelerations. We estimate a dynamical mass of 35 ± 10 M _J ( q ∼ 0.02), making HD 136164 Ab the youngest substellar companion with a dynamical mass estimate. The new mass and newly constrained orbital eccentricity ( e = 0.44 ± 0.03) and separation (22.5 ± 1 au) could indicate that the companion formed via the low-mass tail of the initial mass function. Our atmospheric fit to a SPHINX M-dwarf model grid suggests a subsolar C/O ratio of 0.45 and 3 × solar metallicity, which could indicate formation in a circumstellar disk via disk fragmentation. Either way, the revised mass estimate likely excludes bottom-up formation via core accretion in a circumstellar disk. HD 136164 Ab joins a select group of young substellar objects with dynamical mass estimates; epoch astrometry from future Gaia data releases will constrain the dynamical mass of this crucial object further.

The increasing automotive development generates large amount of waste car tires, which cannot be landfilled and the reuse level of raw materials used in vehicles production must achieve at least 95 %. The calorific value of waste tires is very high and they can be considered as energy carries, for example in the form of char generated during pyrolysis process. The article presents the results of chemical analysis of char samples and parameters which are crucial from the environment and iron ore sintering process point of view. The results show, that char samples with high carbon content, low sulfur, zinc and pyrolysis oil content can be applied in the iron ore sintering process.

Objective To determine the utility of a highly sensitive troponin assay when utilized in the emergency department. Methods The FAST-TRAC study prospectively enrolled >1,500 emergency department patients with suspected acute coronary syndrome within 6 hours of symptom onset and 2 hours of emergency department presentation. It has several unique features that are not found in the majority of studies evaluating troponin. These include a very early presenting population in whom prospective data collection of risk score parameters and the physician’s clinical impression of the probability of acute coronary syndrome before any troponin data were available. Furthermore, two gold standard diagnostic definitions were determined by a pair of cardiologists reviewing two separate data sets; one that included all local troponin testing results and a second that excluded troponin testing so that diagnosis was based solely on clinical grounds. By this method, a statistically valid head-to-head comparison of contemporary and high sensitivity troponin testing is obtainable. Finally, because of a significant delay in sample processing, a unique ability to define the molecular stability of various troponin assays is possible. Introduction Background of behavioral addictions, which include smartphone addiction, is complicated and unclear. Belonging to an Internet community that shows many forms of virtual pathology and generates new, artificial trends also favors the development of mental implications which include lowered mental immunity, emotional lability, increased depressiveness, aggression, inadequate self-esteem, lowered self-value and personality disorders. Implications regarding the social sphere are above all related to the gradual alienation from the closest environment as a result of preoccupation with the subject of dependence. Those consequences include deterioration of social relations, loss of interpersonal skills and former interests, as well as the minimization of contacts with the closest ones which lead to the sense of social isolation and loneliness. Objectives The aim of this study was to estimate the scale of mobile phone addiction among young adults as well as to establish whether the low level of perceived social support is related to the problematic smartphone use, and whether an addictive pattern of smartphone use is related to the prevalence of depressiveness and excessive daytime sleepiness. Methods The study involved 567 young-adult respondents from West Pomeranian Voivodship in Poland. The study was carried out using the diagnostic poll method via questionnaire technique. Both the author’s own questionnaire and the following standardized research tools were used: the Mobile Phone Problem Use Scale for Adolescents (MPPUSA), the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS). Results Perceived social support was significantly lower in the group of respondents who problematically used their smartphones in comparison with the ones who used them in a correct way (p < 0.05). Severity of depressive symptoms and daytime sleepiness (p < 0.05) was significantly greater in respondents addicted to their mobiles in comparison with non-addicted ones. Conclusions The scale of the mobile phone addiction phenomenon in respondents was low. Many respondents though expressed a subjective sense of being addicted to their smartphones in comparison with the obtained results. Problematic smartphone use concerns to the same degree members of both sexes, residents of villages and cities, as well as singles and ones in relationships (both formal and informal). The mobile phone addiction is associated with the risk of severe symptoms of depression and excessive daytime sleepiness. Pathologic pattern of smartphone use much more frequently concerned individuals who perceived their social support level as low. Disclosure of Interest None Declared

Abstract Background The assembly task is an indispensable step in sequencing genomes of new organisms and studying structural genomic changes. In recent years, the dynamic development of next-generation sequencing (NGS) methods raises hopes for making whole-genome sequencing a fast and reliable tool used, for example, in medical diagnostics. However, this is hampered by the slowness and computational requirements of the current processing algorithms, which raises the need to develop more efficient algorithms. One possible approach, still little explored, is the use of quantum computing. Results We present a proof of concept of de novo assembly algorithm, using the Genomic Signal Processing approach, detecting overlaps between DNA reads by calculating the Pearson correlation coefficient and formulating the assembly problem as an optimization task (Traveling Salesman Problem). Computations performed on a classic computer were compared with the results achieved by a hybrid method combining CPU and QPU calculations. For this purpose quantum annealer by D-Wave was used. The experiments were performed with artificially generated data and DNA reads coming from a simulator, with actual organism genomes used as input sequences. To our knowledge, this work is one of the few where actual sequences of organisms were used to study the de novo assembly task on quantum annealer. Conclusions Proof of concept carried out by us showed that the use of quantum annealer (QA) for the de novo assembly task might be a promising alternative to the computations performed in the classical model. The current computing power of the available devices requires a hybrid approach (combining CPU and QPU computations). The next step may be developing a hybrid algorithm strictly dedicated to the de novo assembly task, using its specificity (e.g. the sparsity and bounded degree of the overlap-layout-consensus graph).

Abstract Background Although some emergency department risk stratification tools consider non‐specific ECG findings as an aid in disposition decisions, their clinical value in patients with an initially low high‐sensitivity cardiac troponin I (hsTnI) is unclear. Objective Our purpose was to determine if non‐specific ECG (ns‐ECG) findings are associated with 30‐day major adverse cardiac events (MACE) in ED patients presenting with suspected acute coronary syndromes (ACS) who have a low initial hsTnI. Methods Using the prospective Siemens Atellica hsTnI Food and Drug Administration submission observational database, we conducted a retrospective cohort study of the association between ns‐ECG findings (defined as left bundle branch block [LBBB], ST depression [STD], or T‐wave inversions [TWI]) and 30‐day MACE (death, myocardial infarction, heart failure hospitalization, or coronary revascularization). Eligible patients presented with suspected ACS to one of 29 US EDs from April 2015 to April 2016, had stable vital signs, a blood sample for hsTnI (Siemen's Atellica, Siemens Healthineers, Inc, Malvern, PA) obtained at 1, 3, and 6 hours after ED presentation, and were followed for 30 days. The relationship between 30‐day outcome, initial hsTnI, and ns‐ECG was evaluated using chi‐square testing. Results Of 2676 enrolled, 1313 patients met the inclusion criteria and are included in the analysis. Median (interquartile range) age was 62 years (54, 72), 54% were male, with 56% white, and 39% African American. Median (interquartile range) times from symptom onset to presentation and presentation to specimen collection were 92 (0, 216) and 146 (117, 177) minutes, respectively. The most common presenting symptoms were chest pain (84%), followed by dyspnea (9%). ECG findings were categorized as T‐wave inversion or non‐specific T wave changes (42%), ST depression ns‐ECG ST changes (16%), or LBBB (2%). Thirty‐day MACE occurred in 72 (5.5%) patients, with coronary revascularization (35 patients, 2.7%) and heart failure (25 patients, 1.9%) being the most frequent outcomes. In patients with an initial hsTnI below the limit of quantitation (LOQ) of 2.5 ng/L (n = 449), there was no association between ns‐ECG changes and 30‐day MACE (P = 0.42). If the hsTnI was ≥LOQ (2.5 ng/L), there were increased rates of 30‐day MACE and ns‐ECG findings (P = 0.01). Conclusion In ED suspected ACS patients without unstable vital signs, and an initial hsTnI less than the LOQ (2.5 ng/L), ns‐ECG findings are not associated with 30‐day major adverse cardiac events. The use of ns‐ECG findings in ACS disposition should be considered in the context of hsTnI levels.

Tree belts (TBs) as one of the agroforestry types, provide many ecosystem services (ESs), that reduce the negative environmental impact of agriculture and increase agricultural productivity. Unfortunately, the lack of quantitative and spatial information regarding TB properties, such as the porosity expressed by gap fraction, often leads to insufficient information on the availability of ESs provided by TBs, such as windbreak efficiency, barrier effectiveness for soil erosion and ability to redistribute snow cover. Moreover, image data, which are usually used for the assessment of TB porosity, only provide 2D information. Therefore, we propose the first comprehensive method of TB porosity indicator estimation conducted by gap mapping using 3D LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) data. The method allows to diagnose the spatial structure of TBs necessary for reliable evaluation of ES availability. Detailed cross-section diagnostic graphs and TB silhouette maps showed the intra-TB variation of porosity and thus may support the decision making on the crop types and may lead to better predictions of agricultural production. Also, on a testing study area, we revealed that the proposed method is suitable to significantly improve the accuracy of vegetation volume estimation in TB. Such a detailed analysis of the inner TB structure may be used to maximize the positive effect of tree belts on agricultural production and therefore is a way towards the sustainable agriculture as well as better assessment of ES provided by tree belts.

Introduction Psychodrama and Drama therapy enable patients to establish contact with the threat of stepping into a given role. This gives the opportunity to learn how to control it, which leads to better expression of oneself and better communication with the environment. Those qualities are crucial in the treatment of mental disorders. Despite the variety of literature describing the methodology, clinical trials using these forms of therapy are relatively rare. Objectives To describe the current trends in psychodrama (PD) and drama (DT) research over the last 6 years. Methods We have implemented a systematic approach to literature review, consistent with the PRISMA declaration. We searched through major medical databases: PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus by Elsevier and Science Direct for peer-reviewed articles published between 2015 and 2020. We have included studies using all types of methodology: mixed, quantitative and qualitative and also case studies. The risk of bias was assessed for randomized clinical trials, consistent with the PRISMA declaration. Results Using our search strategy we have identified 24 publications with 454 participants. Most of the subjects were adults, only four studies focused on children. Overall, these studies looked at the effects of PD i DT on more than 25 different outcomes. Therefore theatre - based therapies research reports promising results across all methodologies. Although, most of the interventions have small groups of clients and are not randomized. Conclusions Current reports on the effectiveness of PD and DT still need to be verified on a larger group of patients. Disclosure No significant relationships.

Abstract Herein, we implement and access machine learning architectures to ascertain models that differentiate healthy from apoptotic cells using exclusively forward (FSC) and side (SSC) scatter flow cytometry information. To generate training data, colorectal cancer HCT116 cells were subjected to miR-34a treatment and then classified using a conventional Annexin V/propidium iodide (PI)-staining assay. The apoptotic cells were defined as Annexin V-positive cells, which include early and late apoptotic cells, necrotic cells, as well as other dying or dead cells. In addition to fluorescent signal, we collected cell size and granularity information from the FSC and SSC parameters. Both parameters are subdivided into area, height, and width, thus providing a total of six numerical features that informed and trained our models. A collection of logistical regression, random forest, k-nearest neighbor, multilayer perceptron, and support vector machine was trained and tested for classification performance in predicting cell states using only the six aforementioned numerical features. Out of 1046 candidate models, a multilayer perceptron was chosen with 0.91 live precision, 0.93 live recall, 0.92 live f value and 0.97 live area under the ROC curve when applied on standardized data. We discuss and highlight differences in classifier performance and compare the results to the standard practice of forward and side scatter gating, typically performed to select cells based on size and/or complexity. We demonstrate that our model, a ready-to-use module for any flow cytometry-based analysis, can provide automated, reliable, and stain-free classification of healthy and apoptotic cells using exclusively size and granularity information.

Abstract Aims Concentrations of insulin‐like growth factor binding protein‐7 (IGFBP7) have been linked to abnormal cardiac structure and function in patients with chronic heart failure (HF), but cardiovascular correlates of the biomarker in patients with more acute presentations are lacking. We aimed to determine the relationship between IGFBP7 concentrations and cardiac structure and to evaluate the impact of IGFBP7 on the diagnosis of acute HF among patients with acute dyspnoea. Methods and results In this pre‐specified subgroup analysis of the International Collaborative of N‐terminal pro‐B‐type Natriuretic Peptide Re‐evaluation of Acute Diagnostic Cut‐Offs in the Emergency Department (ICON‐RELOADED) study, we included 271 patients with and without acute HF. All patients presented to an emergency department with acute dyspnoea, had blood samples for IGFBP7 measurement, and detailed echocardiographic evaluation. The aim of the paper is to formulate physically well founded yield condition for initially anisotropic solids revealing the asymmetry of elastic range. The initial anisotropy occurs in material primarily due to thermo-mechanical pre-processing and plastic deformation during the manufacturing processes. Therefore, materials in the “as-received” state become usually anisotropic. After short account of the known limit criteria for anisotropic solids and discussion of mathematical preliminaries the energy-based criterion for orthotropic materials was formulated and confronted with experimental data and numerical predictions of other theories. Finally, possible simplifications are discussed and certain model of isotropic material with yield condition accounting for a correction of shear strength due to initial anisotropy is presented. The experimental verification is provided and the comparison with existing approach based on the transformed-tensor method is discussed.

The paper presents the results of the electrodeposition of nickel composite coatings reinforced with the nano size SiC ceramic particles. The type and size of the ceramic particles or organic additives used play a important role during electrodeposition processes. A Watts type galvanic bath with various organic additives was used. These additives were: 2-sulfobenzoic acid imide, dioctyl sulfosuccinate sodium salt (DSS), sodium dodecyl sulfate, tris (hydroxymethyl) aminomethane and hexamethyldisilizane. The nickel composite coating was electrodeposited on a 2xxx aluminum alloy series substrate (EN-AW 2017) with zinc interlayer. The work concerns the determination of the impact of the change in the zeta potential of SiC nanoceramic particles used on properties of composite coatings (wear resistance, corrosion, etc.). The paper characterized the composite nickel coatings on aluminum alloy using SEM techniques, wear resistance tests by TABER method and coating adhesion to the substrate using the “scratch test” method. The corrosion resistance of coatings was also tested using electrochemical methods. The research allowed to determine the effect of SiC nanoceramic particle size on the value of the zeta potential in the model KCl solution.

Giant exoplanets have been directly imaged over orders of magnitude of orbital separations, prompting theoretical and observational investigations of their formation pathways. In this paper, we present new VLTI/GRAVITY astrometric data of HIP 65426 b, a cold, giant exoplanet which is a particular challenge for most formation theories at a projected separation of 92 au from its primary. Leveraging GRAVITY’s astrometric precision, we present an updated eccentricity posterior that disfavors large eccentricities. The eccentricity posterior is still prior dependent, and we extensively interpret and discuss the limits of the posterior constraints presented here. We also perform updated spectral comparisons with self-consistent forward-modeled spectra, finding a best-fit ExoREM model with solar metallicity and C/O = 0.6. An important caveat is that it is difficult to estimate robust errors on these values, which are subject to interpolation errors as well as potentially missing model physics. Taken together, the orbital and atmospheric constraints paint a preliminary picture of formation inconsistent with scattering after disk dispersal. Tension remains between the observed and modeled properties of substellar objects, but objects in binary orbits, with known dynamical masses, can provide a way forward. HD 72946 B is a recently imaged brown dwarf companion to a nearby, solar-type star. We achieve ∼100 μ as relative astrometry of HD 72946 B in the K band using VLTI/GRAVITY, unprecedented for a benchmark brown dwarf. We fit an ensemble of measurements of the orbit using orbitize! and derive a strong dynamical mass constraint M _B = 69.5 ± 0.5 M _Jup assuming a strong prior on the host star mass M _A = 0.97 ± 0.01 M _⊙ from an updated stellar analysis. We fit the spectrum of the companion to a grid of self-consistent BT-Settl-CIFIST model atmospheres, and perform atmospheric retrievals using petitRADTRANS . A dynamical mass prior only marginally influences the sampled distribution of effective temperature, but has a large influence on the surface gravity and radius, as expected. The dynamical mass alone does not strongly influence retrieved pressure–temperature or cloud parameters within our current retrieval setup. Independently of the cloud prescription and prior assumptions, we find agreement within ±2 σ between the C/O of the host (0.52 ± 0.05) and brown dwarf (0.43–0.63), as expected from a molecular cloud collapse formation scenario, but our retrieved metallicities are implausibly high (0.6–0.8) in light of the excellent agreement of the data with the solar-abundance model grid. Future work on our retrieval framework will seek to resolve this tension. Additional study of low surface gravity objects is necessary to assess the influence of a dynamical mass prior on atmospheric analysis.

Studies concerned the effect of the applied organic additives on properties of composite coatings such as: microstructure, microhardness, adhesion to the substrate, corrosion resistance and roughness. The structure of the coatings was assessed by scanning electron microscopy and light microscopy. Based on the studies of zeta potential it was found that the bath modification had a significant impact on the amount of the ceramic phase embedded in metal matrix. The tests conducted in a model 0.01 M KCl solution were not fully representative of the true behavior of particles in a Watts bath.

The aim of this paper was to test currently available on the market products for sealing anodic oxide coatings as well as to test the use of other alternative substances improving the sealing process. The ability to seal in 10 different solutions and the quality of the seal has been tested. The influence of the applied preparations on corrosion resistance and resistance to strongly alkaline environment was also investigated. Based on the results obtained, satisfactory results were archived for the sample sealed in a IMN-OML (Institute of Non-Ferrous Metals in Gliwice, Light Metals Division) solution sealant and in solution of nickel acetate in a medium-temperature process. Sealing by means of nickel acetate solutions is economically justified, and its use allows the process temperature to be lowered. When it comes to resistance to alkalis, samples sealed in IMN-OML sealant are the best. Commercial solutions have also achieved positive results in all tests.

The availability of archival spatial datasets, which are crucial means of obtaining valuable information in biological and ecological research, is often limited due to the analog form of the data. Therefore, digitization projects of natural history collections (NHCs) currently show a rising trend. Increasingly, these projects include geotagging, which means assigning geographical coordinates and spatial attributes to specimens discovered in the field. Although numerous studies have examined the process of digitizing NHCs, there is still a need to develop good practice guides and a unified database or list of geographical information resources. Moreover, the accuracy of the spatial assignment of specimen locations in many online databases is unacceptable for environmental research. Therefore, it is important to develop a methodology to standardize geotagging methods.The first goal of this paper was to create and verify a list of available online sources of geotagged spatial information. The second goal was to develop a good practice guide for geotagging NHCs based on the limitations resulting from the specificity of archival data. These aims were achieved owing to participation in the AMU Nature Collections project – digitization and sharing of natural data resources of the Faculty of Biology of Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań (AMUNATCOLL). The results of the proposed methodology indicate that natural history data are so heterogeneous in terms of spatial description quality that it is not always possible to unambiguously and precisely geotag them. Therefore, it is important to implement the spatial quality assessment and commenting system proposed by the authors.

Summary: To identify therapeutic targets for KRAS mutant pancreatic cancer, we conduct a druggable genome small interfering RNA (siRNA) screen and determine that suppression of BCAR1 sensitizes pancreatic cancer cells to ERK inhibition. Integrative analysis of genome-scale CRISPR-Cas9 screens also identify BCAR1 as a top synthetic lethal interactor with mutant KRAS. BCAR1 encodes the SRC substrate p130Cas. We determine that SRC-inhibitor-mediated suppression of p130Cas phosphorylation impairs MYC transcription through a DOCK1-RAC1-β-catenin-dependent mechanism. Additionally, genetic suppression of TUBB3, encoding the βIII-tubulin subunit of microtubules, or pharmacological inhibition of microtubule function decreases levels of MYC protein in a calpain-dependent manner and potently sensitizes pancreatic cancer cells to ERK inhibition. Accordingly, the combination of a dual SRC/tubulin inhibitor with an ERK inhibitor cooperates to reduce MYC protein and synergistically suppress the growth of KRAS mutant pancreatic cancer. Thus, we demonstrate that mechanistically diverse combinations with ERK inhibition suppress MYC to impair pancreatic cancer proliferation.

Abstract Aim: The purpose of the study was to assess upper limbs’ maximum power and locomotion speed among amputee football (amputee soccer) players. Methods: The 30-s Wingate Anaerobic test and the 20-m sprint test were performed. Anthropometric measurements and body composition (Body mass index (BMI), percentage of body fat (% BF), and lean body mass (LBM)) were examined. Results: BMI significantly differentiated forwards and defenders (p < 0.05). Peak power (PP) and mean power (MP) were related to LBM (p < 0.05), thus defenders reached higher values of PP, in comparison to forwards. % BF and BMI were related to relative mean power (rMP) (p < 0.05). Field position differentiated players in terms of upper limbs’ relative peak power (rPP) in favour of forwards (p < 0.05). Age was a significant factor for speed velocity on 10 m and 20 m (p < 0.05). There was no relationship between upper limbs’ power and locomotion speed. Conclusion: Body composition, especially % BF may influence on the anaerobic performance of amputee football players.

Predicting customer decisions allows companies to obtain higher profits due to better resource management. The accuracy of those predictions can be currently boosted by the application of machine learning algorithms. We propose a new method to predict a car driver’s decision about taking a replacement car after a vehicle accident happens. We use feature engineering to create attributes of high significance. The generated attributes are related to time (e.g., school holidays), place of collision (e.g., distance from home), time and conditions (e.g., weather), vehicles (e.g., vehicle value), addresses of both the victim and the perpetrator. Feature engineering involves external sources of data. Five machine learning methods of classification are considered: decision trees, multi-layer perceptrons, AdaBoost, logistic regression and gradient boosting. Algorithms are tested on real data from a Polish insurance company. Over 80% accuracy of prediction is achieved. Significance of the attributes is calculated using the linear vector quantization method. Presented work shows the applicability of machine learning in the car insurance market.

Abstract Forest undergrowth plants are tightly connected with the shady and humid conditions that occur under the canopy of tropical forests. However, projected climatic changes, such as decreasing precipitation and increasing temperature, negatively affect understory environments by promoting light‐demanding and drought‐tolerant species. Therefore, we aimed to quantify the influence of climate change on the spatial distribution of three selected forest undergrowth plants, Dracaena Vand. ex L. species, D. afromontana Mildbr., D. camerooniana Baker, and D. surculosa Lindl., simultaneously creating the most comprehensive location database for these species to date. A total of 1,223 herbarium records originating from tropical Africa and derived from 93 herbarium collections worldwide have been gathered, validated, and entered into a database. Species‐specific Maxent species distribution models (SDMs) based on 11 bioclimatic variables from the WorldClim database were developed for the species. HadGEM2‐ES projections of bioclimatic variables in two contrasting representative concentration pathways (RCPs), RCP2.6 and RCP8.5, were used to quantify the changes in future potential species distribution. D. afromontana is mostly sensitive to temperature in the wettest month, and its potential geographical range is predicted to decrease (up to −63.7% at RCP8.5). Optimum conditions for D. camerooniana are low diurnal temperature range (6–8°C) and precipitation in the wettest season exceeding 750 mm. The extent of this species will also decrease, but not as drastically as that of D. afromontana. D. surculosa prefers high precipitation in the coldest months. Its potential habitat area is predicted to increase in the future and to expand toward the east. This study developed SDMs and estimated current and future (year 2050) potential distributions of the forest undergrowth Dracaena species. D. afromontana, naturally associated with mountainous plant communities, was the most sensitive to predicted climate warming. In contrast, D. surculosa was predicted to extend its geographical range, regardless of the climate change scenario.

The subject of the work is the analysis of thermomechanical bending process of a thin-walled tube made of X5CrNi18-10 stainless steel. The deformation is produced at elevated temperature generated with a laser beam in a specially designed experimental setup. The tube bending process consists of local heating of the tube by a moving laser beam and simultaneous kinematic enforcement of deformation with an actuator and a rotating bending arm. During experimental investigations, the resultant force of the actuator and temperature at the laser spot are recorded. In addition to experimental tests, the bending process of the tube was modelled using the finite element method in the ABAQUS program. For this purpose, the tube deformation process was divided into two sequentially coupled numerical simulations. The first one was the heat transfer analysis for a laser beam moving longitudinally over the tube surface. The second simulation described the process of mechanical bending with the time-varying temperature field obtained in the first simulation. The force and temperature recorded during experiments were used to verify the proposed numerical model. The final stress state and the deformation of the tube after the bending process were analyzed using the numerical solution. The results indicate that the proposed bending method can be successfully used in forming of the thin-walled profiles, in particular, when large bending angles and a small spring-back effect are of interest.

In this article the structural and mechanical properties of grain refinement of Cu-Sn alloys with tin content of 10%, 15% and 20% using the KOBO method have been presented. The direct extrusion by KOBO (name from the combination of the first two letters of the names of its inventors – A. Korbel and W. Bochniak) method employs, during the course of the whole process, a phenomenon of permanent change of strain travel, realized by a periodical, two-sided, plastic metal torsion. Moreover the aim of this work was to study corrosion resistance. The microstructure investigations were performed using an optical microscope Olimpus GX71, a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and a scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM). The mechanical properties were determined with INSTRON 4505/5500 machine. Corrosion tests were performed using «Autolab» set – potentiostat/galvanostat from EcoChemie B.V. with GPES software ver. 4.9. The obtained results showed possibility of KOBO deformation of Cu-Sn casting alloys. KOBO processing contributed to the refinement of grains and improved mechanical properties of the alloys. The addition of tin significantly improved the hardness. Meanwhile, with the increase of tin content the tensile strength and yield strength of alloys decrease gradually. Ductility is controlled by eutectoid composition and especially δ phase, because they initiate nucleation of void at the particle/matrix interface. No significant differences in the corrosion resistance between cast and KOBO processed materials were found.

The Natural History Collections of Adam Mickiewicz University (AMUNATCOLL) in Poznań contain over 2.2 million specimens. Until recently, access to the collections was limited to specialists and was challenging because of the analogue data files. Therefore, this paper presents a new approach to data sharing called the Scientific, Educational, Public, and Practical Use (SEPP) Model. Since the stakeholder group is broad, the SEPP Model assumes the following key points: full open access to the digitized collections, the structure of metadata in accordance with certain standards, and a versatile tool set for data mining or statistical and spatial analysis. The SEPP Model was implemented in the AMUNATCOLL IT system, which consists of a web portal equipped with a wide set of explorative functionalities tailored to different user groups: scientists, students, officials, and nature enthusiasts. An integral part of the system is a mobile application designed for field surveys, enabling users to conduct studies comparing their own field data and AMUNATCOLL data. The AMUNATCOLL IT database contains digital data on specimens, biological samples, bibliographic sources, and multimedia nature documents. The metadata structure was developed in accordance with ABCD 2.06 and Darwin Core standards.

The subject of the study are alumina foams produced by gelcasting method. The results of micro-computed tomography of the foam samples are used to create the numerical model reconstructing the real structure of the foam skeleton as well as the simplified periodic open-cell structure models. The aim of the paper is to present a new idea of the energy-based assessment of failure strength under uniaxial compression of real alumina foams of various porosity with use of the periodic structure model of the same porosity. Considering two kinds of cellular structures: the periodic one, for instance of fcc type, and the random structure of real alumina foam it is possible to justify the hypothesis, computationally and experimentally, that the same elastic energy density cumulated in the both structures of the same porosity allows to determine the close values of fracture strength under compression. Application of finite element computations for the analysis of deformation and failure processes in real ceramic foams is time consuming. Therefore, the use of simplified periodic cell structure models for the assessment of elastic moduli and failure strength appears very attractive from the point of view of practical applications.

Acquired hemophilia A (AHA) is a rare disease with a prevalence in Europe of 1.5 per million. This diagnosis is significantly delayed in about one-third of all cases, leading to deferred treatment. The main signs of AHA are spontaneous bleeding seen in about two-thirds of all patients. AHA can be lethal in 20% of all symptomatic cases. This patient population’s main standard laboratory finding is a prolonged aPTT (activated prothrombin Time) with otherwise normal coagulation results. In addition, antibodies against FVIII (in Bethesda Units) and a quantitative reduction of FVIII activity are necessary to confirm AHA. The therapy of acute bleeding related to AHA is based on the following main principles: Pharmacologic control of the bleeding is of absolute importance. It can be achieved by administering either recombinant activated FVIIa “bypass therapy”; activated prothrombin complex; or Emicizumab, a bispecific monoclonal antibody. Eradication of the FVIII antibodies should be initiated simultaneously. The combination of steroids with cyclophosphamide leads to the highest eradication rates. Causes of AHA may be related to neoplasms, autoimmune diseases, and pregnancy. We report on a patient who underwent four surgical procedures before the diagnosis of AHA was established.

Summary: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are short non-coding RNA molecules that regulate gene expression post-transcriptionally by binding to target messenger RNAs (mRNAs). Many human miRNAs are intragenic, located within introns of protein-coding sequence (host). Intriguingly, a percentage of intragenic miRNAs downregulate the host transcript forming an incoherent feedforward motif topology. Here, we study intragenic miRNA-mediated host gene regulation using a synthetic gene circuit stably integrated within a safe-harbor locus of human cells. When the intragenic miRNA is directed to inhibit the host transcript, we observe a reduction in reporter expression accompanied by output filtering and noise reduction. Specifically, the system operates as a filter with respect to promoter strength, with the threshold being robust to promoter strength and measurement time. Additionally, the intragenic miRNA regulation reduces expression noise compared to splicing-alone architecture. Our results provide a new insight into miRNA-mediated gene expression, with direct implications to gene therapy and synthetic biology applications.

Amendment of soils with plant residues is common practice for improving soil quality. In addition to stimulated microbial activity, the supply of fresh soluble organic (C) from litter may accelerate the microbial degradation of chemicals in soils. Therefore, the aim of this study was to test whether the maize litter enhances degradation of 4-chloro-2-methylphenoxyacetic acid (MCPA) and increases formation of non-toxic biogenic non-extractable residues (bioNERs). Soil was amended with 13C6-MCPA and incubated with or without litter addition on the top. Three soil layers were sampled with increasing distance from the top: 0–2 mm, 2–5 mm and 5–20 mm; and the mass balance of 13C6-MCPA transformation determined.Maize litter promoted microbial activity, mineralization of 13C6-MCPA and bioNER formation in the upper two layers (0–2 and 2–5 mm). The mineralization of 13C6-MCPA in soil with litter increased to 27% compared to only 6% in the control. Accordingly, maize addition reduced the amount of extractable residual MCPA in soil from 77% (control) to 35% of initially applied 13C6-MCPA. While non-extractable residues (NERs) were

Geographical location and object description is an important aspect in field research, regardless of the spatial scale. Throughout time, environmental researchers have been using different tools and methods to determine and record location/description of observations with all limitations on their use. Lately, more and more common digital methods and new technologies have been gaining interest and popularity within the environmental science community. Among those technologies there are mobile mapping devices and applications which have been gaining audience in recent time. dedicated Handheld devices such as consumer-grade GPS (Global Positioning System) dedicated for tourism purposes have been substituted by smartphones and tablets with integrated GPS receiver so that field mapping became much easier and more readily available to a broader audience. Although the possibility of using mobile devices and dedicated applications for field mapping has an increasing trend, there is very little attention dedicated to them in methodology sections of research works. The purpose of this paper is to bring further awareness about such technologies to environmental researchers as they could benefit from using dedicated software available for mobile devices. Such software could ameliorate their workflow, accuracy and quality of data, which can help to achieve better research results.We briefly present our review result of mobile applications for field mapping as the first global overview within scientific journals. The review includes environmental citizen science apps as a particular example of data collection applications. The comprehensive description of workspace creation for field surveys using ArcGIS Online (Esri, 2019) and Collector for ArcGIS (Esri, 2019a) is presented in this work. This research is conducted using the case study of the limestone mining plant in Poland.

Background Keratoconus (KTCN) is a progressive eye disease, characterized by changes in the shape and thickness of the cornea that results in loss of visual acuity. While numerous KTCN candidate genes have been identified, the genetic etiology of the disease remains undetermined. To further investigate and verify the contribution of particular genetic factors to KTCN, we assessed 45 candidate genes previously indicated as involved in KTCN etiology based on transcriptomic and genomic data. Methods The RealTime ready Custom Panel, covering 45 KTCN candidate genes and two reference transcripts, has been designed. Then, the expression profiles have been assessed using the RT-qPCR assay in six KTCN and six non-KTCN human corneas, obtained from individuals undergoing a penetrating keratoplasty procedure. Results In total, 35 genes exhibiting differential expression between KTCN and non-KTCN corneas have been identified. Among these genes were ones linked to the extracellular matrix formation, including collagen synthesis or the TGF-β, Hippo, and Wnt signaling pathways. The most downregulated transcripts in KTCN corneas were CTGF, TGFB3, ZNF469, COL5A2, SMAD7, and SPARC, while TGFBI and SLC4A11 were the most upregulated ones. Hierarchical clustering of expression profiles demonstrated almost clear separation between KTCN and non-KTCN corneas. The gene expression levels determined using RT-qPCR showed a strong correlation with previous RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq) results. Conclusions A strong correlation between RT-qPCR and earlier RNA-Seq data confirms the possible involvement of genes from collagen synthesis and the TGF-β, Hippo, and Wnt signaling pathways in KTCN etiology. Our data also revealed altered expression of several genes, such as LOX, SPARC, and ZNF469, in which single nucleotide variants have been frequently identified in KTCN. These findings further highlight the heterogeneous nature of KTCN.

Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) and periodontal disease (PD) are global health problems. High frequency of ASCVD is associated with the spread of many risk factors, including poor diet, sedentary lifestyle, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, obesity, smoking, hypertension, chronic kidney disease, hypertension, hyperhomocysteinemia, hyperuricemia, excessive stress, virus infection, genetic predisposition, etc. The pathogenesis of ASCVD is complex, while inflammation plays an important role. PD is a chronic, multifactorial inflammatory disease caused by dysbiosis of the oral microbiota, causing the progressive destruction of the bone and periodontal tissues surrounding the teeth. The main etiological factor of PD is the bacteria, which are capable of activating the immune response of the host inducing an inflammatory response. PD is associated with a mixed microbiota, with the evident predominance of anaerobic bacteria and microaerophilic. The “red complex” is an aggregate of three oral bacteria: Tannerella forsythia Treponema denticola and Porphyromonas gingivalis responsible for severe clinical manifestation of PD. ASCVD and PD share a number of risk factors, and it is difficult to establish a causal relationship between these diseases. The influence of PD on ASCVD should be treated as a factor increasing the risk of atherosclerotic plaque destabilization and cardiovascular events. The results of observational studies indicate that PD significantly increases the risk of ASCVD. In interventional studies, PD treatment was found to have a beneficial effect in the prevention and control of ASCVD. This comprehensive review summarizes the current knowledge of the relationship between PD and ASCVD.

The dataset and toolbox presented in this article are related to the research article entitled ''Modeling potential tree belt functions in rural landscapes using a new GIS tool'' (Nowak and Pędziwiatr, 2018) [1]. The dataset (spatially referenced) is used as input for all the five analysis modules described in the related article. The dataset contains vector and raster data, which cover north-west part of the Gen. Dezydery Chłapowski Landscape Park in Poland. Moreover, the present work shows the result (a vector layer) of using the TBM toolbox within ArcGIS (ESRI) software. The Tree Belt Modeling (TBM toolbox) code and internal structure can be fully accessed, and are available for further modification and incorporation of tools. Abstract Background The area of application of electronic stethoscopes in medical diagnostics covers the scope of usability of the acoustic stethoscopes, from which they have evolved and which they could potentially replace. However, the principle of operation of these two groups of diagnostic devices is substantially different. Thus, an important question arises, regarding the differences in parameters of the transmitted sound and their potential diagnostic consequences in clinical practice. Methods In order to answer this question, heart auscultation signals are recorded using various stethoscopes and divided into short fragments based on the analysis of the synchronized recordings of electrocardiogram signals. Next, a dedicated algorithm is used to extract representative datasets for each case, which are then analyzed for their acoustic parameters. Four different electronic stethoscopes were investigated, together with an acoustic stethoscope as a reference point. Results The determined acoustic characteristics of the considered stethoscopes differ significantly between each other. Conclusions The differences in sound transmitted by various stethoscope models may translate into significant differences in quality of the obtained diagnosis. It is also pointed out, that the terminology and application guidelines regarding the electronic stethoscopes are misleading and should be changed.

As a contribution to improving understanding of the mechanisms and relationships that exist within shallow peatland ecosystems, we report the results of monitoring five-years’ recovery after restoration of a forestry-drained sloping rich fen site in the Central Sudetes in south-west Poland. Over the last 100 years, drainage ditches installed for forestry management purposes have affected the hydrology, soil and vegetation of this site. Spruce stands were present until 2010, when restoration started with blocking of ditches and clearcutting/removal of trees. The main objective of our study was to determine the effects of these restoration activities on aspects of hydrology and soil condition. We hypothesised that the five years following restoration could provide sufficient time to improve: 1) water table level and water quality, and 2) the physical and chemical properties of the organic soil. Restoration had a positive effect on water table level as early as two years after implementation of drain blocking and reduction of tree cover. However, five years was not sufficient time to reverse the decline in water quality. The concentrations of labile carbon forms in water, as well as water colour (Abs400), were similar in 2010 and 2015. Due to peatland rewetting and peat swelling a decrease in peat bulk density was observed. However, this outcome was identified only in the bottom organic soil horizons. This, in turn, affected the thickness of the peat layer and the altitude of the soil surface. Five years of recovery is insufficient to stop the mineralisation of organic matter, as indicated by lower TOC/TN values, slightly higher concentrations of labile forms of carbon, and the W1 index of secondary transformation.

In this paper, a novel procedure for preparing calibration solutions for capillary electrophoresis (CE)-based quantitative analysis is proposed. Our approach, named the automated hydrodynamically mediated technique (AHMT), uses a capillary and a pressure system to deliver the expected amount of working solution and diluent directly to a sample vial. As a result, calibration solutions are prepared automatically inside the CE instrument, without any or with minimal manual operation. Two different modes were tested: forward and reverse, differing in the direction of hydrodynamic flow. The calibration curves obtained for a model mixture of analytes using AHMT were thorough compared to the standard procedure based on manual pipetting. The results were consistent, though the volume of obtained calibration solutions and the potential risk of random errors were significantly minimized by AHMT. Its effectiveness was further enhanced by the application of SCIEX® nanoVials, reducing the actual volume of calibration solutions down to 10 μL.

Extraction procedures for mandibular third molars are performed all over the world every day. Local inflammation resulting from surgery, and the pain that patients experience, often make it impossible to take up daily life activities, such as work or sports. Growth and anti-inflammatory factors, located in the fibrin network, have a positive effect on tissue-healing processes and should also reduce local inflammation. Advanced platelet-rich fibrin (A-PRF) applied locally influences such processes as: angiogenesis, osteogenesis and collagenogenesis. It also affects mesenchymal cell lines and anti- and pro-inflammatory mediators. Due to the autologous origin of the material, their use in guide bone regeneration (GBR) is more and more widespread in dentistry. The results of previous studies indicate that the use of A-PRF in the treatment area significantly reduces postoperative pain, while the formation of edema is not affected. C-reactive protein (CRP), which is an acute phase protein, appears in the blood as a consequence of inflammation. Due to the dynamics of changes in concentration of CRP, it is a protein that is sufficiently sensitive and is used in studies to monitor the tissue healing process. The effect of A-PRF application on CRP concentrations, before and after surgery, has not been investigated yet. The study was conducted on 60 generally healthy patients. A faster decrease of CRP levels was shown in patients who used A-PRF after the procedure. Additionally, it accelerated healing and reduced the occurrence of a dry socket close to 0.

A new bioactive compound, Mn3+-saturated bovine lactoferrin (Mn2-bLf) was obtained. It was stable under physiological conditions (pH ≈ 7.5) although gradually releases Mn2+ ions under the simulated intestinal conditions (pH ≈ 6.5). This feature might be utilized for controlled delivery of Mn2+ ions to biological targets, among others to the probiotic strains of lactic acid bacteria whose growth is manganese-dependent. The Mn3+ modified bLf stimulates the growth of standard Lactobacillus plantarum and Lactobacillus rhamnosus, as well as the strains isolated from commercially available probiotic preparations, while the naturally occurring Fe-free and Fe-saturated forms of this protein are inactive. The uptake of manganese by Lactobacilli from Mn2-bLf added to culture supernatant was confirmed. Mn2-bLf was non-cytotoxic for Caco-2, CT-26 and HT-29 intestinal epithelial cells even up to 10 mg/ml concentration. Mn2-bLf due to stimulation of the growth of Lactobacilli and lack of toxicity, can be considered as an innovative ingredient of the prebiotic composition.

We show an opportunity to change the birefringence of Ga2O3 – La2S2.95Se0.05 glasses doped by Er3+ and La3+ ions at λ = 1150 nm wavelength of cw He-Ne laser under illumination of the femtosecond laser. The variation of the refractive indices was found during illumination by 180 fs laser with frequency about 65 MHz (at wavelength λ = 1045 nm). The laser-stimulated birefringence has been explored versus temperature. The observed laser induced and temperature dependences of the birefringence confirm a huge contribution of anharmonic phonon subsystems which is typical for chalcogenide glasses. Due to an occurrence of local space charge density asymmetry, the efficiency of birefringence is enhanced. The anisotropy effect exists only during the illumination and is diminished during 10…12 s after switching off of the photo-inducing laser treatment. There is observed also a correlation between the occurred grating patterns and the values of the birefringence.
