We report on the effects of light depolarization induced by sharp metallic tips in Tip-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (TERS). Experiments on Si(001) and GaAs(001) crystals show that the excitation field depolarization induces a selective enhancement of specific Raman modes, depending on their Raman tensor symmetry. A complete polarization analysis of the light backscattered from the tip confirms the TERS findings. The spatial confinement of the depolarization field is studied and its dependence on the excitation wavelength and power are explored.

The history of hemophilia is well documented, yet reports focus heavily on the male perspective and severe forms of the disease. Although hemophilia was initially believed to only affect men with women seen as silent carriers, it is now universally acknowledged that women and girls can also be affected. In this narrative review, we tracked the progression of beliefs about women and hemophilia as documented in the literature from pre-1800s to the present time. We present a timeline of evolving beliefs and testing practices and identified 9 distinct time periods when key shifts occurred related to various scientific discoveries. Our review highlights how women affected by hemophilia experienced complete dismissal of their health issues despite evidence of bleeding symptoms as early as the 1900s. We identified 1990 as a major timepoint for shifting beliefs when large scale acknowledgment that hemophilia also affects women is documented and systematic testing for bleeding risk is first suggested. Women evolve from being seen as unaffected genetic transmitters only, to being recognized as a population affected by hemophilia in unique ways requiring timely testing and effective treatment. Yet, despite this clear progress, recent publications continue to document many persistent issues such as delayed diagnosis, untreated symptoms, and barriers to care. Introduction: It is widely acknowledged that haemophilia affects women and girls, yet current testing recommendations for factor level and genetic testing vary and do not universally incorporate updated research. Canadian parents have expressed frustration at inconsistent recommendations and reported instances where delayed testing led to missed diagnosis and preventable bleeding., Aim: Study aim was to explore and describe the practice of haemophilia-related testing of young girls in Canada., Methods: A mixed methods study was carried out with two populations: (1) Nurses working in haemophilia care completed a survey regarding the current testing recommendations of their Haemophilia Treatment Centre (HTC), (2) Parents of obligate or potential haemophilia carriers completed a structured interview with questions about their family experience of haemophilia and testing decisions for daughters., Results: Twenty-six survey responses were received and showed wide variation in the usual recommendations of Canadian HTCs. Different factor level testing recommendations may be given to obligate and potential carriers despite no difference in bleeding risk. Only a minority of HTCs currently recommend an early baseline factor level (< 10 years) to obligate carriers (27%) or potential carriers (15%). For genetic testing of potential carriers, 70% of HTC would approve a family request for genetic testing of a minor with specific conditions. The majority of parents interviewed felt dissatisfied with their testing experience (58%) and highlighted many issues related to delayed testing recommendations., Conclusion: Updated, nationally affirmed testing recommendations are needed that align with research on bleeding in women and girls affected by haemophilia., (© 2024 The Author(s). MoS 2 nanoribbons have attracted increased interest due to their properties, which can be tailored by tuning their dimensions. Herein, the growth of MoS 2 nanoribbons and triangular crystals formed by the reaction between films of MoOx (22 nanoribbons arising from distinct contributions from the single-layer edges and multilayer core. Nanoscale imaging reveals a blue-shifted exciton emission of the monolayer edge compared to the isolated MoS 2 monolayers due to built-in local strain and disorder. We further report on an ultrasensitive photodetector made of a single MoS 2 nanoribbon with a responsivity of 8.72 × 10 2  A W -1 at 532 nm, among the highest reported up-to-date for single-nanoribbon photodetectors. The renin-angiotensin system (RAS) is one of the main regulatory systems of cardiovascular homeostasis. It is mainly composed of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) and angiotensin II receptors AT1 and AT2. ACE and AT1 are targets of choice for the treatment of hypertension, whereas the AT2 receptor is still not exploited due to the lack of knowledge of its physiological properties. Peptide toxins from venoms display multiple biological functions associated with varied chemical and structural properties. If Brazilian viper toxins have been described to inhibit ACE, no animal toxin is known to act on AT1/AT2 receptors. We screened a library of toxins on angiotensin II receptors with a radioligand competition binding assay. Functional characterization of the selected toxin was conducted by measuring second messenger production, G-protein activation and β-arrestin 2 recruitment using bioluminescence resonance energy transfer (BRET) based biosensors. We identified one original toxin, A-CTX-cMila, which is a 7-residues cyclic peptide from Conus miliaris with no homology sequence with known angiotensin peptides nor identified toxins, displaying a 100-fold selectivity for AT1 over AT2. This toxin shows a competitive antagonism mode of action on AT1, blocking Gαq, Gαi3, GαoA, β-arrestin 2 pathways and ERK 1/2 activation. These results describe the first animal toxin active on angiotensin II receptors.

This work demonstrates the enhancement in plasmonic sensing efficacy resulting from spatially-localized functionalization on nanostructured surfaces, whereby probe molecules are concentrated in areas of high field concentration. Comparison between SERS measurements on nanostructured surfaces (arrays of nanodisks 110 and 220 nm in diameter) with homogeneous and spatially-localized functionalization with thiophenol demonstrates that the Raman signal originates mainly from areas with high field concentration. TERS measurements with 10 nm spatial resolution confirm the field distribution profiles predicted by the numerical modeling. Though this enhancement in plasmonic sensing efficacy is demonstrated with SERS, results apply equally well to any type of optical/plasmonic sensing on functionalized surfaces with nanostructuring.

Background: Hemophilia carriers experience abnormal bleeding symptoms; however, a lack of awareness about this topic coupled with additional knowledge gaps and barriers leads to suboptimal care for this population., Objective: The primary objective was to describe the current knowledge gaps and challenges from the perspective of both hemophilia carriers and their health care providers., Methods: We carried out a mixed methods descriptive study with two population groups between September and December 2020. The hemophilia carrier perspective was obtained through both focus groups and questionnaires, whereas the health care providers perspective obtained via questionnaire sent to the Association of Hemophilia Care Directors of Canada and the Canadian Association of Nurses in Hemophilia Care. Focus groups were analyzed using descriptive thematic analysis and quantitative survey data was also analyzed., Results: Eleven hemophilia carriers participated along with 19 health care providers (11 physicians, eight nurses). Hemophilia carrier focus group discussions identified four areas representing major challenges or knowledge gaps: (1) negative psychosocial impacts; (2) difficulty determining symptom significance; (3) need for self-advocacy; (4) testing concerns. Survey results from both groups were aligned with the most important topics for ongoing education identified as information on abnormal bleeding symptoms, where to seek treatment, and considerations for heavy menstrual bleeding/menstruation. The majority of both study groups believe obligate or potential carriers should have factor levels checked regardless of age if symptoms of abnormal bleeding occur or before an invasive procedure. Approach to the patient with bleeding begins with a thorough bleeding, medical, and family history to determine the nature of bleeding and severity of bleeding symptoms. Use of a Bleeding Assessment Tool allows the clinician to obtain a comprehensive bleeding history and ultimately determine the individual bleeding score that reflects bleeding severity and is classifiable as either normal or abnormal. Graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) fabricated using electron beam lithography are investigated using tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS) with a spatial resolution of 5 nm under ambient conditions. High-resolution TERS imaging reveals a structurally modified 5-10 nm strip of disordered graphene at the edge of the GNRs. Furthermore, hyperspectral TERS imaging discovers the presence of nanoscale organic contaminants on the GNRs. These results pave the way for nanoscale chemical and structural characterisation of graphene-based devices using TERS.

One common challenge highlighted in almost every review article on organic resistive memory is the lack of areal switching uniformity. This, in fact, is a puzzle because a molecular switching mechanism should ideally be isotropic and produce homogeneous current switching free from electroforming. Such a demonstration, however, remains elusive to date. The reports attempting to characterize a nanoscopic picture of switching in molecular films show random current spikes, just opposite to the expectation. Here, this longstanding conundrum is resolved by demonstrating 100% spatially homogeneous current switching (driven by molecular redox) in memristors based on Ru-complexes of azo-aromatic ligands. Through a concurrent nanoscopic spatial mapping using conductive atomic force microscopy and in operando tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (both with resolution <7 nm), it is shown that molecular switching in the films is uniform from hundreds of micrometers down to the nanoscale and that conductance value exactly correlates with spectroscopically determined molecular redox states. This provides a deterministic molecular route to obtain spatially homogeneous, forming-free switching that can conceivably overcome the chronic problems of robustness, consistency, reproducibility, and scalability in organic memristors., (© 2020 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides are gaining increasing interest due to their promising optical properties. In particular, molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) which displays a band-gap change from indirect at 1.29 eV for bulk materials to direct at 1.8 eV for the material monolayer. This particular effect can lead to a strong light interaction which can pave the way for a new approach to the next generation of visible light emitting devices. In this work we show the nanoscale variation of light emission properties by tip-enhanced photoluminescence microscopy and spectroscopy in the MoS 2 monolayer, grown by chemical vapour deposition. The variations of the light emission properties are due to different effects depending on the shape of the MoS 2 single layer, for instance, a different concentration of point defect in an irregularly shaped flake and the presence of a nanoscale terrace in a triangular monolayer. Simultaneously, atomic force microscopy reveals indeed the presence of a nanometric terrace, composed of an additional layer of MoS 2 , and tip-enhanced PL intensity imaging shows a localized intensity decrease.

Visualising the distribution of structural defects and functional groups present on the surface of two-dimensional (2D) materials such as graphene oxide challenges the sensitivity and spatial resolution of the most advanced analytical techniques. Here we demonstrate mapping of functional groups on a carboxyl-modified graphene oxide (GO-COOH) surface with a spatial resolution of ≈10 nm using tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS). Furthermore, we extend the capability of TERS by measuring local electronic properties in situ, in addition to the surface topography and chemical composition. Our results reveal that the Fermi level at the GO-COOH surface decreases as the I D /I G ratio increases, correlating the local defect density with the Fermi level at nanometre length-scales. The in situ multi-parameter microscopy demonstrated in this work significantly improves the accuracy of nanoscale surface characterisation, eliminates measurement artefacts, and opens up the possibilities for characterising optoelectronic devices based on 2D materials under operational conditions.

The external pallidum (GPe) is a component of the indirect pathway centrally placed in the basal ganglia. Studies already demonstrated that the pharmacological disinhibition of the sensorimotor, associative, and limbic GPe produced dyskinesia, hyperactivity, and compulsive behaviors, respectively. The aim of this study was to investigate the cortical regions altered by the disinhibition of each GPe functional territory. Thus, 5 macaques were injected with bicuculline in sensorimotor, associative, and limbic sites of the GPe producing dyskinesia, hyperactivity, and compulsive behaviors, and underwent in vivo positron tomography with 18 F-2-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose to identify cortical dysfunctions related to GPe disinhibition. Blood cortisol levels were also quantified as a biomarker of anxiety for each condition. Our results showed that pallidal bicuculline injections in anesthetized animals reproducibly modified the activity of specific ipsilateral and contralateral cortical areas depending on the pallidal territory targeted. Bicuculline injections in the limbic GPe led to increased ipsilateral activations in limbic cortical regions (anterior insula, amygdala, and hippocampus). Injections in the associative vs. sensorimotor GPe increased the activity in the ipsilateral midcingulate vs. somatosensory and parietal cortices. Moreover, bicuculline injections increased blood cortisol levels only in animals injected in their limbic GPe. These are the first functional results supporting the model of opened cortico-striato-thalamo-cortical loops where modifications in a functional pallidal territory can impact cortical activities of the same functional territory but also cortical activities of other functional territories. This highlights the importance of the GPe as a crucial node in the top-down control of the cortico-striato-thalamo-cortical circuits from the frontal cortex to influence the perception, attention, and emotional processes at downstream (or non-frontal) cortical levels. We report Tip Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (TERS) mapping and Density Functional (DFT) calculations of aminothiophenol (ATP) grafted on a gold surface. The TERS mapping has demonstrated Raman modes of (ATP) and its dimerised derivative Dimercaptoazobenzene (DMAB). This feature confirms that the plasmon activated chemical reaction of ATP has occurred during TERS measurements. In some specific part of the samples some unidentified Raman modes are observed. We suggest that they could come from intermediate species formed during the conversion of ATP into DMAB. These modes are compared with calculated Raman spectra of some possible intermediate species. These results confirm the high potentiality of TERS measurements for nanochemistry.

A billion-fold increase in the Raman signal over conventional tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy/microscopy (TERS) is reported. It is achieved by introducing a stimulating beam confocal with the pump beam into a conventional TERS setup. A stimulated TERS spectrum, closely corresponding to its spontaneous TERS counterpart, is obtained by plotting the signal intensity of the strongest Raman peak of an azobenzene thiol self-assembled monolayer versus the stimulating laser frequency. The stimulated TERS image of azobenzene thiol molecules grafted onto Au ⟨111⟩ clearly shows the surface distribution of the molecules, whereas, when compared to the simultaneously recorded surface topography, it presents an image contrast of different nature. The experimentally obtained stimulated gain is estimated at 1.0 × 10(9), which is in reasonable agreement with the theoretically predicted value. In addition to the signal increase, the signal-to-noise ratio was 3 orders of magnitude higher than in conventional spontaneous TERS. The proposed stimulated TERS technique offers the possibility for a substantially faster imaging of the surface with respect to normal TERS.

Mixed thiol self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) presenting methyl and azobenzene head groups were prepared by chemical substitution from the original single-component n-decanethiol or [4-(phenylazo)phenoxy]hexane-1-thiol SAMs on polycrystalline gold substrates. Static contact-angle measurements were carried out to confirm a change in the hydrophobicity of the functionalized surfaces following the exchange reaction. The mixed SAMs presented contact-angle values between those of the more hydrophobic n-decanethiol and the more hydrophilic [4-(phenylazo)phenoxy]hexane-1-thiol single-component SAMs. By means of tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS) mapping experiments, it was possible to highlight that molecular replacement takes place easily and first at grain boundaries: for two different mixed SAM compositions, TERS point-by-point maps with <50 nm step sizes showed different spectral signatures in correspondence to the grain boundaries. Introduction: Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS) is characterized by abnormal movements (tics) often associated with behavioural disorders. Neuropathological data from GTS patients have suggested that aberrant activation of distinct striatal functional territories could produce a large spectrum of GTS symptoms. In a monkey model, injections of GABA-antagonist into the striatum enabled us to produce tic-like movements, hyperactivity and stereotyped behaviours. These effects had similarities with simple motor tics, hyperactivity and compulsive behaviours observed in GTS patients. In this study, we first aimed to identify the neuronal circuits involved in the different behavioural effects using anatomical antero/retrograde tracer in monkeys. We also compared the neuronal circuits thus obtained with the available neuro-anatomical data on GTS patients., Methods: Using injections of axonal tracer into different functional parts of the striatum of eight monkeys, we identified cortical, thalamic and basal ganglia regions related to the expression of tic-like movements, hyperactivity and stereotyped behaviours induced in response to microinjection of GABA-antagonist., Results: In this monkey model, different anatomical circuits involving distinct cortical and thalamic areas and sub-territories of the basal ganglia underpinned movement and behavioural disorders. Thus, tic-like movements were associated with neuronal labelling within the sensorimotor network, mostly in the medial and lateral premotor cortex and sensorimotor parts of the basal ganglia. Neuronal labelling in the prefrontal dorso-lateral cortex and associative territories of the basal ganglia was related to hyperactivity disorder and stereotyped behaviours were linked to the orbitofrontal cortex and limbic part of the basal ganglia., Conclusions: These results support the hypothesis that different behavioural effects could arise from distinct but inter-digitated neuronal circuits. As these behavioural disorders shared some similarities with simple motor tics, hyperactivity and compulsive behaviours observed in GTS patients, this model could be a good tool for future studies involving the modulation of neuronal circuits, such as deep brain stimulation., (Copyright © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Patterned silicon on insulator structures representing evenly spaced parallel 15 nm-thick nanostripes exhibit an enhanced Raman scattering response when excited in the visible range in an oblique incidence backscattering configuration. The enhancement phenomenon in two structures having different stripe widths, 200 and 50 nm, is investigated at various sample azimuthal orientations, excitation radiation polarizations as well as laser wavelengths and is shown to be of resonant nature. The enhanced Raman response of the patterned structures is attributed to the presence of Mie resonances, essentially resulting in the enhancement of the internal electric field within the nanostripes. It is quantitatively described in terms of the spheroid particle model extended beyond the electrostatic limit to include field retardation effects that are shown to be responsible for the resonant behaviour in the visible range.

Post-growth transfer and high growth temperature are two major hurdles that research has to overcome to get graphene out of research laboratories. Here, using a plasma-enhanced chemical vapour deposition process, we demonstrate the large-area formation of continuous transparent graphene layers at temperatures as low as 450 °C. Our few-layer graphene grows at the interface between a pre-deposited 200 nm Ni catalytic film and an insulating glass substrate. After nickel etching, we are able to measure the optical transmittance of the layers without any transfer. We also measure their sheet resistance directly and after inkjet printing of electrical contacts: sheet resistance is locally as low as 500 Ω sq⁻¹. Finally the samples equipped with printed contacts appear to be efficient humidity sensors.

Cerebral aging is often associated with the occurrence of neurodegenerative diseases leading to dementia. Animal models are critical to elucidate mechanisms associated to dementia and to evaluate neuroprotective drugs. Rats that received intracerebroventricular injection of streptozotocin (icv-STZ) have been reported as a model of dementia. In these animals, this drug induces oxidative stress and brain glucose metabolism impairments associated to insulin signal transduction failure. These mechanisms are reported to be involved in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease and other dementia. Icv-STZ rats also display memory impairments. However, little is known about the precise location of the lesions induced by STZ administration. In this context, the present study characterized the cerebral lesions induced by two-doses of icv-STZ by using high-field magnetic resonance imaging to easily and longitudinally detect cerebral abnormalities and by using immunohistochemistry to evaluate neuronal loss and neuroinflammation (astrocytosis and microgliosis). We showed that, at high doses, icv-STZ induces severe and acute neurodegenerative lesions in the septum and corpus callosum. The lesions are associated with an inflammation process. They are less severe and more progressive at low doses. The relevance of high and low doses of icv-STZ to mimic dementia and evaluate new drugs is discussed in the final part of this article.

The present study focuses on the interaction of hydrogen microwave CVD plasma with nanodiamonds (NDs). Hydrogen treated NDs (H-NDs) were characterized using electron spectroscopies (XPS, AES) without air exposure. A surface temperature higher than 700 °C is needed to remove the oxygen present on raw NDs. The kinetics of oxygen removal were investigated. Moreover, UHV annealings of H-NDs after ageing in ambient air clearly underline that 75% of the oxygen is related to physisorbed species. Finally, H-NDs were efficiently grafted using photochemical reaction with alkenes and a spontaneous coupling of aryldiazonium salts. 6-[4-(phenylazo)phenoxy]hexane-1-thiol self-assembled monolayers deposited on a gold surface form domain-like structures possessing a high degree of order with virtually all the molecules being identically oriented with respect to the surface plane. We show that, by using polarized near-field Raman spectroscopy, it is possible to derive the Raman scattering tensor of the ordered layer and consequently, the in-plane molecular orientation at the individual domain level. More generally, this study extends the application domain of the near-field Raman scattering selection rules from crystals to ordered organic structures.

Nanodiamond (ND) seeding is a well-established route toward the CVD (chemical vapor deposition) synthesis of diamond ultrathin films. This method is based on the deposition onto a substrate of diamond nanoparticles which act as pre-existing sp(3) seeds. Here, we report on a straightforward method to disperse diamond nanoparticles on a substrate by taking advantage of the electrostatic interactions between the nanodiamonds and the substrate surface coated with a cationic polymer. This layer-by-layer deposition technique leads to reproducible and homogeneous large-scale nanoparticle deposits independent of the substrate's nature and shape. No specific functionalization of the nanoparticles is required, and low concentrated solutions can be used. The density of NDs on the substrate can be controlled, as shown by in situ ATR-FTIR (attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared) analysis and QCM (quartz crystal microbalance) measurements. Highly dense and compact ND deposits can be obtained, allowing CVD growth of nanocrystalline diamond ultrathin films (70 nm) on various substrates. The synthesis of 3D structured and patterned diamond thin films has also been demonstrated with this method.

The current model of basal ganglia organization postulates their functional division into sensorimotor, associative, and limbic territories, implicated, respectively, in motor, cognitive, and motivational aspects of behavior. Based on this model, we previously demonstrated, in the external segment of globus pallidus of monkeys, that the same neuronal dysfunction induced dyskinesia or abnormal behavior depending on the functional territory. To extend these findings, we performed bicuculline microinjections into the different functional territories of the striatum in 6 monkeys. Abnormal movements were observed after microinjections into the posterior putamen, corresponding to the sensorimotor territory, and into the dorsal part of the anterior striatum, corresponding to the associative functional territory. Within the ventral striatum, referred to as the limbic functional territory, we identified 3 subregions corresponding to different types of abnormal behaviors. Simultaneous neuronal recordings performed close to the microinjection sites confirmed that bicuculline produced a focal increase of neuronal activity surrounded by a zone with neuronal hypoactivity. This study provides new evidence for the involvement of specific striatal regions in movement as well as in a large spectrum of behavioral disorders and suggests that local inhibitory dysfunction could be a pathological mechanism of various neurological and psychiatric disorders.

This paper deals with different methods for the manufacturing of near-field optical probes with nanometric aperture. After the wet chemical etching of the fiber, two metallization processes are compared: the well-known thermal evaporation versus the novel arrangement of plasma sputtering. Further, it is reported an original controlled nano-indentation in the smooth softness surface to produce the apex aperture of the tapered fiber. These apertures present thin protrusions, but they show good optical and topographic resolutions. Besides, the probe sensitivity is discussed with respect to the multi- and single-mode of the primary optical fiber for imaging sub-wavelength dimension objects in the collection mode.

Microscale fiber tip sensors based on the plasmon resonance are reported. The fabrication process derived from our previous approach for manufacturing near-field scanning optical microscopy probes has been optimized for sensing applications. A typical tip sensor is a tapered fiber 400 microm in length, coated with a nanoporous thin silver film. The miniaturized geometry of the sensor allows detection in a single droplet of liquid solution (approximately 20 microl). The tip sensor is sensitive for refractive indices between 1.33 and 1.40 with a sensitivity of at least 3 x 10(-4) refractive index unit (RIU)/nm. The Raman scattering enhancement through these microsensors demonstrates the important role played by the localized plasmon resonance. The sensors' linear response covers a large region, interesting for biosensing in aqueous environments such as biomedical applications.

This very year, the eight of may, the terrifying eruption of the montagne Pelee on the isle of la Martinique annihilated in few minutes the town and the port of Saint-Pierre, leaving only two survivors, He sejourned there a second time, in august 1902 after the second eruption. A. Lacroix explained, for the first time, phenomena he designated as nuees ardentes. Albert-Jean-Louis Brun (1851-1929), was chemist of the University of Bern (Switzerland) and "licencié ès sciences" of the University of Sorbonne (France). In Paris he was a faithful follower of Charles Friedel. In Coutance (Genève), where he was working in his own chemistry, he realised all his researchs. After a trip to Stromboli in 1901, he studied the volcanic phenomena as a chemist, as a mineralogist and as a geophysicist. His researchs brought him till the mediterranean volcanos--Vesuve, Etna, Santorin--, till Java and Krakatoa, then Canarian islands, and the lava lake of Kilauea, etc. The results of his works are collected in a big book called "Recherches sur l'exhalaison volcanique": he presents a theory which was the subject of a polemic with the professor Henri Gautier of the professor Henri Gautier of the Faculty of Pharmacy of Paris.

Tingry spent his entire professional and scientific career in Geneva, after completing his pharmacy studies in Paris. An important part of his writings, unpublished and conserved in Geneva, concerns plant chemistry. His work was principally devoted to the composition and varied parts of the flower Lilium album. Although he is classified as a minerologist and inorganic chemist, it is fitting to think of him also as a botanist and innovative talent in pharmacognosis.

This is made without using hydrofluoric acid. The dissolution of silicas is carried out by ammonium fluoride in aqueous solution with potassium chloride. Concerning combinaisons of ethylene oxide with any gums. The combinaisons of ethylene oxide are determined with any gums: tragacanthe, arabic, ceratonia, guar and sterculia. Among the stable compounds obtained with the gums sterculia, the author make mention of chloro-2 éthanol and ethyleneglycol.

The mutagenic activity of the condensates from oxydative pyrolysis of various polyamides at 500, 800 and 1,000 degrees C has been searched for by AMES preincubation test in strains TA 98 and TA 100 with or without metabolic activation by an Aroclor 1254 induced rat liver microsomal S9mix fraction. All condensates are mutagenic in the presence of this fraction and most of them are far less or not mutagenic in the absence of S9mix. Strain TA 98 is more sensitive than strain TA 100 for detecting the mutagenic activity of these condensates. So, they mainly contain indirect mutagenic substances responsible for frameshift mutation. In all cases, mutagenic activity is maximum at 800 degrees C. This observation should draw the attention upon the genotoxic (carcinogenic) long term risk induced by thermal decomposition of plastics and then upon the necessary protection of firemen and others in charge of domestic or hospital solid waste incineration.

On combinations of borotungstic acid with nitrogenous compounds. Under definite conditions, these combinations are borotungstates of quinine, cinchonine, cinchonidine, brucine, strychnine, morphine, sparteine, pilocarpine, nicotine, stovaine, procaine, choline and acetylcholine. Oxidation of 6-methoxyquinoline with vanadate shows the possibility of initial complex formation between the dioxovanadium(V) ion VO(+)(2) and the ethereal oxygen atom. The opening of the homocycle yields mainly 2-pyridone-3-carboxylic acid. In the case of quinine or mefloquine, the VO(+)(2) ion preferentially forms a pentagonal chelate with the secondary alcohol function. Oxidation of this complex initially produces quinoline-4-carboxylic acids. The acid that results from mefloquine is stable in the reaction solution and this property allows a reproducible consumption of reagent and a quantitative determination of this new antimalarial drug.
