The discipline of seismology is based on observations of ground motion that are inherently undersampled in space and time. Our basic understanding of earthquake processes and our ability to resolve 4D Earth structure are fundamentally limited by data volume. Today, Big Data Seismology is an emergent revolution involving the use of large, data-dense inquiries that is providing new opportunities to make fundamental advances in these areas. This article reviews recent scientific advances enabled by Big Data Seismology through the context of three major drivers: the development of new data-dense sensor systems, improvements in computing, and the development of new types of techniques and algorithms. Each driver is explored in the context of both global and exploration seismology, alongside collaborative opportunities that combine the features of long-duration data collections (common to global seismology) with dense networks of sensors (common to exploration seismology). The review explores some of the unique challenges and opportunities that Big Data Seismology presents, drawing on parallels from other fields facing similar issues. Finally, recent scientific findings enabled by dense seismic data sets are discussed, and we assess the opportunities for significant advances made possible with Big Data Seismology. We present a new method for seismic reservoir characterization and reservoir-property modeling on the basis of an integrated analysis of 3D-seismic data and hydraulic flow units, and apply it to an example of a producing reservoir offshore Western Australia. Our method combines hydraulic-unit analysis with a set of techniques for seismic reservoir characterization including rockphysics analysis, Bayesian inference, prestack seismic inversion, and geostatistical simulation of reservoir properties. Hydraulic units are geologic layers and zones characterized by similar properties of fluid flow in porous permeable media, and are defined at well locations on the basis of logs, core measurements, and production data. However, the number of wells available for hydraulic- unit analysis is often extremely limited. In comparison, the lateral coverage and resolution of 3D-seismic data are excellent, and can thus be used to extend hydraulic-unit analysis away from well locations into the full 3D reservoir volume. We develop a probabilistic relationship between optimal 3D-seismic-data attributes and the hydraulic units that we determine at well locations. Because porosity and permeability distributions are estimated for each hydraulic flow unit as part of the process, we can use the 3Dseismic probabilistic relationships to constrain geostatistical realizations of porosity and permeability in the reservoir, to be consistent with the flow-unit analysis. Reservoir models jointly constrained by both 3D-seismic data and hydraulic flow-unit analysis have the potential to improve the processes of reservoir characterization, fluid-flow performance forecasting, and production data or 4D-seismic history matching. Knowledge of the pressure dependence of rock properties is useful for a wide range of earth science problems, especially related to pore pressure changes caused by fluid injection or withdrawal, as often occurs in groundwater, hydrocarbon and CO2 sequestration reservoirs. A long-standing problem is that theoretical models of velocity-pressure response often do not match laboratory measurements, and alternately, empirical regressions fit to such data do not extrapolate accurately to wider pressure ranges since they have little or no physical basis. Accurate determination of the dry rock frame properties at low effective pressure is a key aspect of the problem, particularly when ultrasonic laboratory measurements are not available in this pressure range. We present a new model to describe the pressure sensitivity of the bulk and shear moduli for uncemented sedimentary rocks. Our model incorporates effects of sedimentary compaction and critical porosity, including a relationship to account for porosity and density change with pressure. The model is tested on laboratory measurements for various rock samples and fits well over a wide range of pressures. The new velocity–pressure model should be useful for improved prediction and interpretation of pressure-dependent rock properties and seismic data. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The effect of rain events on effluent quality dynamics was studied at a full scale activated sludge wastewater treatment plant which has a process solution incorporating pre-denitrification in activated sludge with post-nitrification in trickling filters. The incoming wastewater flow varies significantly due to a combined sewer system. Changed flow conditions have an impact on the whole treatment process since the recirculation to the trickling filters is set by the hydraulic limitations of the secondary settlers. Apart from causing different hydraulic conditions in the plant, increased flow due to rain or snow-melting, changes the properties of the incoming wastewater which affects process performance and effluent quality, especially the particle removal efficiency. Floc characteristics were studied at a full scale activated sludge treatment plant with a unique process solution incorporating pre-denitrification with post-nitrification in nitrifying trickling filters. Since greater nitrogen removal is achieved when more secondary settled wastewater is recirculated to the trickling filters, the secondary settlers are always operated close to their maximal capacity. The flocculation and settling properties are therefore crucial and have an effect on the overall plant performance. Since the plant is operated at a short sludge age, these properties change quickly, resulting in variable maximal secondary settler capacity. The dynamics in floc structure and microbial community composition were studied and correlated to the secondary settler performance. Fluorescence in situ hybridisation was used to investigate the microbial community structure and their spatial distribution. The floc structure could to some extent be related to the flocculation and settling properties of the sludge. Even small differences had an influence suggesting that colloidal properties also play a significant role in determining the floc properties. No correlation between microbial community composition and settling properties could be established with the group-specific probes investigated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Tighter discharge permits often require wastewater treatment plants to maximize utilization of available facilities in order to cost-effectively reach these goals. Important aspects are minimizing internal disturbances and using available information in a smart way to improve plant performance. In this study, flow control throughout a large highly automated wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) was implemented in order to reduce internal disturbances and to provide a firm foundation for more advanced process control. A modular flow control system was constructed based on existing instrumentation and soft sensor flow models. Modules were constructed for every unit process in water treatment and integrated into a plant- wide model. The flow control system is used to automatically control recirculation flows and bypass flows at the plant. The system was also successful in making accurate flow estimations at points in the plant where it is not possible to have conventional flow meter instrumentation. Secondary settling dynamics at maximal capacity were investigated at a full scale wastewater treatment plant which utilizes a unique process solution incorporating pre-denitrification with postnitrification in nitrifying trickling filters. Since nitrogen removal is greater when more secondary effluent is recirculated to the trickling filters, the secondary settlers generally operate at close to their maximal capacity. The settling and flocculation properties of the activated sludge are therefore a major capacity-determining factor for plant operation. Due to the short sludge age, the flocculation properties, with respect to both thickening and clarification, can change quickly. The dynamics in these changes were studied and the factors that determine the maximal settling capacity were assessed. The Rya WWTP in Goteborg, Sweden is a highly loaded activated sludgeplant which has been upgraded to remove nitrogen and to increase thebiologically treated flow by 33% to reduce bypassing. Severe site restrictions made it difficult to increase the plant area. This was solved using a compact process based on tertiary nitrification in trickling filters and recirculation to a highly loaded activated sludge unit for denitrification. The necessary volumes were achieved by expanding the plant upwards, thus making it possible to place the trickling filters a in part of the area occupied by the former aeration basins.The recirculation of trickling filter effluent made it necessary to double the secondary settler capacity. This was solved by retrofitting the existing settlers as stacked settlers with a second tray on topof the original basin. The architecture of magma plumbing systems plays a fundamental role in volcano eruption and evolution. However, the precise configuration of crustal magma reservoirs and conduits responsible for supplying eruptions are difficult to explore across most active volcanic systems. Consequently, our understanding of their correlation with eruption dynamics is limited. Axial Seamount is an active submarine volcano located along the Juan de Fuca Ridge, with known eruptions in 1998, 2011, and 2015. Here we present high-resolution images of P-wave velocity, attenuation, and estimates of temperature and partial melt beneath the summit of Axial Seamount, derived from multi-parameter full waveform inversion of a 2D multi-channel seismic line. Multiple magma reservoirs, including a newly discovered western magma reservoir, are identified in the upper crust, with the maximum melt fraction of ~15-32% in the upper main magma reservoir (MMR) and lower fractions of 10% to 26% in other satellite reservoirs. In addition, a feeding conduit below the MMR with a melt fraction of ~4-11% and a low-velocity throat beneath the eastern caldera wall connecting the MMR roof with eruptive fissures are imaged. The proliferation of seismic networks in Australia has laid the groundwork for high-resolution probing of the continental crust. Here we develop an updated 3D shear-velocity model using a large dataset containing nearly 30 years of seismic recordings from over 1600 stations. A recently-developed ambient noise imaging workflow enables improved data analysis by integrating asynchronous arrays across the continent. This model reveals fine-scale crustal structures at a lateral resolution of approximately 1-degree in most parts of the continent, highlighted by 1) shallow low velocities (<3.2 km/s) well correlated with the locations of known sedimentary basins, 2) consistently faster velocities beneath discovered mineral deposits, suggesting a whole-crustal control on the mineral deposition process, and 3) distinctive crustal layering and improved characterization of depth and sharpness of the crust-mantle transition. Atypical ductal hyperplasia (ADH) is an indication for excisional biopsy to rule out occult breast cancer. We analyzed pathological findings on excisional biopsy for ADH diagnosed in a high volume breast center equipped with digital tomosynthesis. Two hundred consecutive patients were diagnosed with ADH on core biopsy with radiographic concordance followed by excisional biopsy. On excisional biopsy, 33 patients (16.5%) were diagnosed with DCIS or invasive breast cancer. Patients with a concurrent diagnosis of papilloma had a higher risk of upstaging on both univariate and multivariate analysis (41.7% vs. 14.9%, p=0.015). SARS-CoV-2 was discovered among humans in Wuhan, China in late 2019, and then spread rapidly, causing a global pandemic. The virus was found to be transmitted mainly by respiratory droplets from infected persons or by direct contact. It was also shown to be excreted in feces, why we investigated whether the virus could be detected in wastewater and if so, to which extent its levels reflects its spread in society. Samples of wastewater from the city of Gothenburg, and surrounding municipalities in Sweden were collected daily from mid-February until June 2020 at the Rya wastewater treatment plant. Flow proportional samples of wastewater were collected to ensure that comparable amounts were obtained for analysis. Daily samples were pooled into weekly samples. Virus was concentrated on a filter and analyzed by RT-qPCR. The amount of SARS-CoV-2 varied with peaks approximately every four week, preceding variations in number of newly hospitalized patients by 19-21 days. At that time virus testing for COVID-19 was limited to patients with severe symptoms. Local differences in viral spread was shown by analyzing weekly composite samples of wastewater from five sampling sites for four weeks. The highest amount of virus was found from the central, eastern, and northern parts of the city. SARS-CoV-2 was also found in the treated effluent wastewater from the WWTP discharged into the recipient, the Göta River, although with a reduction of 4-log 10. The viral peaks with regular temporal intervals indicated that SARS-CoV-2 may have a cluster spread, probably reflecting that the majority of infected persons only spread the disease during a few days. Purpose: The management of biopsy proven atypical lobular hyperplasia (ALH) is controversial. Although upgrade rates are low, excisional biopsy is often performed to rule out occult breast cancer., Methods: In this study, we analyzed our experience with excisional biopsy for ALH diagnosed in the digital tomosynthesis era with radiographic concordance in the community hospital setting. This study included 93 consecutive patients diagnosed with pure ALH on core biopsy from January 2013-December 2017 who underwent subsequent excisional biopsy. Potential clinical, radiographic and pathologic predictors of upgrading were analyzed., Results: At the time of excisional biopsy, five patients (5.4%) were upgraded to DCIS or invasive breast cancer. There was also a trend towards higher upgrade rates in patients with contralateral breast cancer (p = 0.06), biopsy performed by ultrasound or MRI (p = 0.07) and extensive ALH (p = 0.10). Other clinical, radiographic and pathologic variables were not predictive of upgrade rate (p > 0.1 for all)., Conclusion: Patients with pure ALH with radiographic concordance have a low risk of pathologic upgrading on excisional biopsy. Potential predictors of upgrade rate warrant further analysis in a larger dataset.

High baseline neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) has been associated with poor survival in a number of solid tumors, but has not been extensively investigated in the context of radiation oncology. Developing more robust models to predict survival would inform patient care for patients with metastatic solid tumors. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of baseline NLR (using 4 as a cutoff) on survival in 320 consecutive patients with metastatic cancer who were referred to a single radiation oncologist between 2012 and 2015, with a median follow-up of 20.6 months. The median NLR was 4.4 (interquartile range, 2.8-7.2). Patients with a baseline NLR ≤4 had a median survival of 9.3 months compared to 4.1 months for NLR >4 (P<0.001). The number of active tumors, Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status score, baseline albumin, primary tumor site, liver metastases and baseline NLR predicted overall survival on both univariate and multivariate analysis (P<0.05 for all). A comprehensive study of the dynamics in settling and flocculation properties at a full-scale activated sludge treatment plant with secondary settlers operated at their maximum capacity is presented. An extensive set of process data was analyzed to assess physical parameters affecting the capacity and performance of the secondary settlers. There was a large variation in the settling and compaction properties, and they changed quickly, as a result of the short sludge age. Even though the flocculation properties changed throughout the year, they were generally improved during the summer, with lower values of effluent turbidity and effluent suspended solids concentration. The shear sensitivity, which is a measure of floc stability, was higher during the winter, when the water temperatures were lower. The sludge floc morphology had, in general, a different internal structure, with more round microbial colonies during the warmer summer months and a more net-like open structure during the winter.

The variation in activated sludge floc composition, flocculation and settling properties was studied at a full scale plant over a 2-year period. A comprehensive set of process parameters was analysed and related to the floc properties to increase the understanding of the factors affecting floc formation. The composition of the activated sludge showed a seasonal change with higher concentrations of extractable extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) during the winter months. The protein content of the total sludge and EPS increased significantly during the winter. This coincided with higher effluent suspended solids concentrations and increased shear sensitivity of the sludge flocs. Only poor correlations between EPS contents and stirred sludge volume index (SSVI) could be observed. High iron concentrations in the sludge due to dosage of iron salt to precipitate phosphorus were found to have a negative impact on the settling and compaction properties of the sludge, whereas it had a positive impact on floc stability. Higher organic loading due to by-passed primary settlers leads to improved settling and compaction properties.

The efficiency of activated sludge treatment plants is dependent on the solid-liquid separation properties of the activated sludge. A critical parameter is the stability of the microbial flocs. Weak flocs deflocculate easily leaving increased concentrations of suspended solids in the effluent. The knowledge about how different bacteria are attached to the flocs and their influence on the bioflocculation is limited. In this study, the deflocculation of different phylogenetic groups of bacteria in activated sludge from a full scale plant was investigated. The experiments were carried out by using a shear method where the sludge flocs are deflocculated under controlled shear conditions. The degree of deflocculation was measured as increase in turbidity of the supernatant. Identification and quantification of the microbial community structure of both total activated sludge and deflocculated bacteria were conducted with group-specific gene probes for broad groups of bacteria (Alphaproteobacteria, Betaproteobacteria, Gammaproteobacteria and Actinobacteria) and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). The microbial community structure of the deflocculated bacteria was different compared to the total activated sludge with a higher abundance of Gammaproteobacteria in the supernatant indicating that different groups of bacteria are bound with different strength to the floc surface. The results show that the bacteria in the outer parts of the flocs are relatively loosely bound to the floc matrix and can be easily eroded from the surface when exposed to shear.
