Abstract To investigate the association between three selected pain polymorphisms and clinical, functional, sensory-related, psychophysical, psychological or cognitive variables in a sample of women with fibromyalgia (FMS). One hundred twenty-three (n = 123) women with FMS completed demographic (age, height, weight), clinical (years with pain, intensity of pain at rest and during daily living activities), functional (quality of life, physical function), sensory-related (sensitization-associated and neuropathic-associated symptoms), psychophysical (pressure pain thresholds), psychological (sleep quality, depressive and anxiety level) and cognitive (pain catastrophizing, kinesiophobia) variables. Those three genotypes of the OPRM1 rs1799971, HTR1B rs6296 and COMT rs4680 single nucleotide polymorphisms were obtained by polymerase chain reactions from no-stimulated whole saliva collection. No significant differences in demographic, clinical, functional, sensory-related, psychophysical, psychological and cognitive variables according to OPRM1 rs1799971, HTR1B rs6296 or COMT rs4680 genotype were identified in our sample of women with FMS. A multilevel analysis did not either reveal any significant gene-to-gene interaction between OPRM1 rs1799971 x HTR1B rs6296, OPRM1 rs1799971 x COMT rs4680 and HTR1B rs6296 x COMT rs4680 for any of the investigated outcomes. This study revealed that three single nucleotide polymorphisms, OPRM1 rs1799971, HTR1B rs6296 or COMT rs4680, mostly associated with chronic pain were not involved in phenotyping features of FMS. Potential gene-to-gene interaction and their association with clinical phenotype in women with FMS should be further investigated in future studies including large sample sizes.

Patients with interstitial lung disease (ILD) represent a vulnerable population against an acute SARS-CoV-2 infection. It has been observed that up to 80% of patients with ILD can develop post-COVID-19 symptomatology one year after. This secondary analysis aimed to, 1, compare serological biomarkers before and after surpassing a SARS-CoV-2 infection in individuals with interstitial lung disease (ILD) and, 2, to compare serological biomarkers between ILD patients who develop and those who do not develop post-COVID-19 symptoms. Seventy-six patients with ILD (40.4% women, age: 69, SD: 10.5 years) who survived a SARS-CoV-2 infection participated. High-resolution computerized tomography (CT) of the lungs, two pulmonary function tests (forced vital capacity (FVC) and diffusion value of carbon monoxide (DLCO)) and fourteen serological biomarkers were collected before and after SARS-CoV-2 infection. Participants were asked for the presence of post-COVID-19 symptomatology a mean of twelve (SD: eight) months after infection. Sixty patients (79%) showed post-COVID-19 symptoms (mean: 3.5, SD 1.1), with fatigue (68.4%), dyspnea (31.5%), and concentration loss (27.6%) being the most prevalent. Creatine phosphokinase (CPK) was the only biomarker showing differences in our study. In fact, CPK levels were higher after the acute SARS-CoV-2 infection (mean difference: 41.0, 95%CI 10.1 to 71.8, p = 0.03) when compared to before the infection. Thus, CPK levels were also higher in ILD patients with post-COVID-19 fatigue (mean difference: 69.7, 95%CI 12.7 to 126.7, p = 0.015) or with post-COVID-19 dyspnea (mean difference: 34.8, 95%CI 5.2 to 64.4, p = 0.025) than those patients without these post-COVID-19 symptoms. No significant changes in CT or functional pulmonary tests were observed after COVID-19 in patients with ILD. In conclusion, patients with ILD exhibited an increase in CPK levels after SARS-CoV-2 infection, albeit no changes in other serological biomarkers were identified. Similarly, the presence of post-COVID-19 fatigue or dyspnea was also associated with higher CPK levels in ILD patients. Studies investigating long COVID mechanisms in vulnerable populations such as ILD are needed.

Specific antigen recognition is one of the immune system’s features that allows it to mount intense yet controlled responses to an infinity of potential threats. T cells play a relevant role in the host defense and the clearance of pathogens by means of the specific recognition of peptide antigens presented by antigen-presenting cells (APCs), and, to do so, they are equipped with a clonally distributed antigen receptor called the T-cell receptor (TCR). Upon the specific engagement of the TCR, multiple intracellular signals are triggered, which lead to the activation, proliferation and differentiation of T lymphocytes into effector cells. In addition, this signaling cascade also operates during T-cell development, allowing for the generation of cells that can be helpful in the defense against threats, as well as preventing the generation of autoreactive cells. Early TCR signals include phosphorylation events in which the tyrosine kinases Lck and ZAP70 are involved. The sequential activation of these kinases leads to the phosphorylation of the transmembrane adaptor LAT, which constitutes a signaling hub for the generation of a signalosome, finally resulting in T-cell activation. These early signals play a relevant role in triggering the development, activation, proliferation and apoptosis of T cells, and the negative regulation of these signals is key to avoid aberrant processes that could generate inappropriate cellular responses and disease. In this review, we will examine and discuss the roles of the tyrosine kinases Lck and ZAP70 and the membrane adaptor LAT in these cellular processes.

In this work, we integrate five case studies harboring vulnerable deep-sea benthic habitats in different geological settings from mid latitude NE Atlantic Ocean (24–42° N). Data and images of specific deep-sea habitats were acquired with Remoted Operated Vehicle (ROV) sensors (temperature, salinity, potential density, O2, CO2, and CH4). Besides documenting some key vulnerable deep-sea habitats, this study shows that the distribution of some deep-sea coral aggregations (including scleractinians, gorgonians, and antipatharians), deep-sea sponge aggregations and other deep-sea habitats are influenced by water masses’ properties. Our data support that the distribution of scleractinian reefs and aggregations of other deep-sea corals, from subtropical to north Atlantic could be dependent of the latitudinal extents of the Antarctic Intermediate Waters (AAIW) and the Mediterranean Outflow Waters (MOW). Otherwise, the distribution of some vulnerable deep-sea habitats is influenced, at the local scale, by active hydrocarbon seeps (Gulf of Cádiz) and hydrothermal vents (El Hierro, Canary Island). The co-occurrence of deep-sea corals and chemosynthesis-based communities has been identified in methane seeps of the Gulf of Cádiz. Extensive beds of living deep-sea mussels (Bathymodiolus mauritanicus) and other chemosymbiotic bivalves occur closely to deep-sea coral aggregations (e.g., gorgonians, black corals) that colonize methane-derived authigenic carbonates.

We present a new method to obtain a combinatorial representation for the behaviour of a submanifold isometrically immersed in a Riemannian manifold based on the second fundamental form. We also present several results applying this new way of representation.

This paper investigates how to optimally orient the photovoltaic solar trackers of an axis parallel to the terrain, applying the sky model of Hay–Davies. This problem has been widely studied. However, the number of studies that consider the orientation (inclination and azimuth of the terrain) is very limited. This paper provides an examination of incident solar irradiance that can be extended to terrain with variable orientation and in consideration of different azimuths of the axis of rotation. Furthermore, a case study of the south of Spain is provided, considering different inclination and orientation terrain values. The results obtained in this study indicate, as a novelty, that for lands that are not south facing, the rotation axis azimuth of solar trackers should be different from zero and adjusted to the same direction as the land azimuth in order to maximize energy production. Annual energy production is sensitive to changes in the rotation axis azimuths of solar trackers (an influence of around 3% of annual energy production).

In this paper, energy management and control of a microgrid is developed through supervisor and adaptive neuro-fuzzy wavelet-based control controllers considering real weather patterns and load variations. The supervisory control is applied to the entire microgrid using lower–top level arrangements. The top-level generates the control signals considering the weather data patterns and load conditions, while the lower level controls the energy sources and power converters. The adaptive neuro-fuzzy wavelet-based controller is applied to the inverter. The new proposed wavelet-based controller improves the operation of the proposed microgrid as a result of the excellent localized characteristics of the wavelets. Simulations and comparison with other existing intelligent controllers, such as neuro-fuzzy controllers and fuzzy logic controllers, and classical PID controllers are used to present the improvements of the microgrid in terms of the power transfer, inverter output efficiency, load voltage frequency, and dynamic response.

We prove that if the f-sectional curvature at any point of a ( 2 n + s ) -dimensional metric f-contact manifold satisfying the ( κ , μ ) nullity condition with n > 1 is independent of the f-section at the point, then it is constant on the manifold. Moreover, we also prove that a non-normal metric f-contact manifold satisfying the ( κ , μ ) nullity condition is of constant f-sectional curvature if and only if μ = κ + 1 and we give an explicit expression for the curvature tensor field in such a case. Finally, we present some examples.

Resumen: El presente artículo se centra en la descripción de un nuevo sistema de gestión de energía para un nuevo tranvía, en la ciudad de Zaragoza (España), propulsado mediante pila de combustible de hidrógeno, como fuente principal de energía, y batería de ión-litio y supercondensador, como fuentes secundarias y de almacenamiento de energía. En la nueva configuración para este tranvía, la batería apoya a la pila de combustible durante los arranques y absorbe la potencia disponible durante las desaceleraciones y frenadas. Por su parte, el supercondensador, al ser el elemento de respuesta dinámica más rápida, actúa principalmente durante los picos de potencia, en los que ni la pila ni la batería son capaces de trabajar. El nuevo sistema de control y de gestión de la energía está basado en lógica difusa, siendo éste el encargado de generar la potencia de referencia en la pila y la variación de la potencia a intercambiar por parte de la batería. En el caso del supercondensador, un control en cascada formado por dos lazos de control ha sido utilizado para poder mantener constante la tensión del bus de continua. Las simulaciones, realizadas todas ellas bajo la plataforma MATLAB-Simulink® y utilizando el ciclo de trabajo real del actual tranvía, muestran como el nuevo sistema de control y gestión de la energía es perfectamente válido para su aplicación en este sistema híbrido. Se realizó un estudio descriptivo retrospectivo de los pacientes adultos menores de 45 años con diagnóstico de enfermedad cerebrovascular (ECV). Nuestro universo quedó constituido por un total de 27 pacientes. Se revisaron las historias clínicas y los datos fueron recogidos mediante una encuesta. Se procesaron estadísticamente y los resultados fueron expresados en tablas estadísticas. Se encontró que los adultos jóvenes son afectados mayoritariamente por la hemorragia subaracnoidea, que en el grupo etáreo de 31-35 años se encuentra la mayor cantidad de pacientes y que no existió predominio relevante en cuanto sexo y raza. Las complicaciones aparecen con frecuencia y el estudio imagenológico resulta importante para el diagnóstico y tratamiento.A retrospective and descriptive study of adult patients under 45 years of age, who were diagnosed as suffering from cardiovascular disease, was performed. Our universe of study was made up of 27 patients whose medical histories were reviewed; data were collected from a survey and statistically processed and final results were shown in statistical tables. We found that young adults are mostly affected by sub-arachnoid hemorrhage, the majority of the patients belongs to 31-35 years age group and that there was no significant predominance of sex or race. Complications are quite frequent whereas the imaging study is important for diagnosis and treatment.

Con el neuromonitoreo y el manejo intensivo del traumatismo craneoencefálico grave, se ha identificado un grupo de eventos fisiopatológicos diferentes, los cuales requieren de medidas disímiles y específicas para cada paciente, con un tratamiento más racional de los mismos. Ello ha propiciado cambios radicales en los antiguos patrones terapéuticos establecidos durante años, tales como el manejo de la reposición hídrica tratando de mantener la euvolemia, la sustitución de la hiperventilación de rutina por la ventilación optimizada y cambios en la política del uso de agentes osmóticos, la terapia barbitúrica y la craneotomía descompresiva en casos de hipertensión intracraneal refractaria a medidas terapéuticas convencionales. En este trabajo se hace una revisión actualizada de las principales medidas terapéuticas específicas para el manejo de la hipertensión endocraneana asociada al estado neurológico crítico de causa traumática, que se dividen en dos fases: las acciones de primera línea y las de segunda, para el tratamiento de la hipertensión endocraneana refractaria.

Solar energy is one of the main renewable energy sources capable of contributing to global energy demand. However, the solar resource is intermittent, making its integration into the electrical system a difficult task. Here, we present and compare two machine learning techniques, deep learning (DL) and support vector regression (SVR), to verify their behavior for solar forecasting. Our testing from Spain showed that the mean absolute percentage error for predictions using DL and SVR is 7.9% and 8.52%, respectively. The DL achieved the best results for solar energy forecast, but it is worth mentioning that the SVR also obtained satisfactory results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Se realizó una revisión bibliográfica sobre el síndrome de respuesta inflamatoria sistémica, se definieron conceptos esenciales para la comprensión de este síndrome. Se describieron de forma precisa y resumida, la fisiopatología actualizada que comprende el papel de los mediadores, la importancia del endotelio, los leucocitos y los radicales libres. Se expuso la hipótesis actual en la génesis del síndrome así como la vigilancia y el seguimiento de estos pacientes afectados.A bibliographic review on the syndrome of systemic inflammatory response was made, and the essential concepts for understading this syndrome were defined. The updated physiopathology including the role of mediators, the importance of the endothelium, the leukocytes and the free radicals were described in a precise and summarized way. The present hypothesis was exposed in the genesis of the syndrome, and the surveillance and follow-up of these affected patiens were also dealt with.

In this paper we present an interesting relationship between graph theory and differential geometry by defining submanifolds of almost Hermitian manifolds associated with certain kinds of graphs. We show some results about the possibility of a graph being associated with a submanifold and we use them to characterize CR--submanifolds by means of trees. Finally, we characterize submanifolds associated with graphs in a four--dimensional almost Hermitian manifold. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The existing model predictive control algorithm based on continuous control using quadratic programming is currently one of the most used modern control strategies applied to wind turbines. However, heavy computational time involved and complexity in implementation are still obstructions in existing model predictive control algorithm. Owing to this, a new switched model predictive control technique is developed for the control of wind turbines with the ability to reduce complexity while maintaining better efficiency. The proposed technique combines model predictive control operating on finite control set and artificial intelligence with reinforcement techniques (Markov Chains, MC) to design a new effective control law which allows to achieve the control objectives in different wind speed zones with minimization of computational complexity. The proposed method is compared with the existing model predictive control algorithm, and it has been found that the proposed algorithm is better in terms of computational time, load mitigation, and dynamic response. The proposed research is a forward step towards refining modern control techniques to achieve optimization in nonlinear process control using novel hybrid structures based on conventional control laws and artificial intelligence.

Mycobacterium kansasii extrapulmonary infections are infrequent in immunocompetent adults. Rifampin (RIF), clarithromycin (CLR), isoniazid (INH) and ethambutol (EMB) are included in all the standard regimens against M.kansasii. We report a case of a healthy 65-year-old male farmer who presented with isolated right supraclavicular lymphadenopathy. The lymph node FNA showed acid-fast-bacilli and granulomatous inflammation. Quantiferon TB Gold test, HIV serology, and functional immunological studies were all negative or normal. He was put on a standard 4 drugs anti-tuberculous regimen that was switched to RIF + CLR+ INH after the Microbiology lab demonstrated an EMB–resistant Mycobacterium kansasii isotype I strain. The patient was cured after 12 months of therapy. This is the 6th reported case of M. kansasii extrapulmonary lymphadenitis in an immunocompetent adult and the 2nd showing EMB resistance in the world literature. Antimycobacterial regimens against M. kansasii, classically resistant to pyrazinamide (PZA) might also exclude EMB due to its increasing resistance in Europe. A 612 months therapy with at least 2 effective antimycobacterial drugs including RIF + CLR might be enough to treat extrapulmonary M. kansasii infections in immunocompetents. Abstract Background At present, much research effort has been devoted to investigate overall (“average”) responses of parasite populations to specific factors, e.g. density-dependence in fecundity or mortality. However, studies on parasite populations usually pay little attention to individual variation (“inequality”) in reproductive success. A previous study on the acanthocephalan Corynosoma cetaceum in franciscana dolphins, Pontoporia blainvillei, revealed no overall intensity-dependent, or microhabitat effects, on mass and fecundity of worms. In this study, we investigated whether the same factors could influence mass inequalities for this species of acanthocephalan. Methods A total of 10,138 specimens of C. cetaceum were collected from 10 franciscanas accidentally caught in Buenos Aires Province between 1988 and 1990. To investigate mass inequalities, all the specimens were sexed, and females were classified according to their developmental stage and weighed. Additionally, the relationship between biomass and fecundity (estimated as the number of acanthors) was investigated for some females. Inequalities in fecundity and biomass were assessed using standard methods, i.e. the Lorenz curve and the Gini coefficient (G). Results We found a modest, but highly significant linear relationship between mass and fecundity. The G was very low (0.314) compared with that from other helminth species. G values were significantly lower in gravid females, which presumably exhibit a slow rate of growth. Also, G values significantly increased with total intensity, but only for gravid females, and the effect was more predictable considering only the intensity of gravid females. Conclusions Apparently, high intensity infections increase inequality of reproducing females without producing “crowding” effects. Although several processes could generate this pattern, gravid females, at higher intensities, expanded their distribution and occupied gut chambers with contrasting environmental conditions, which might result in greater variability in body size. The observed inequalities are not expected to strongly influence the population genetics of C. cetaceum, but they reveal subtle individual effects beyond an overall population impact.

In this research, a new nonlinear and adaptive state feedback controller with a fast-adaptive robust differentiator is presented for grid-tied inverters. All parameters and external disturbances are taken as uncertain in the design of the proposed controller without the disadvantages of singularity and over-parameterization. A robust differentiator based on the second order sliding mode is also developed with a fast-adaptive structure to be able to consider the time derivative of the virtual control input. Unlike the conventional backstepping, the proposed differentiator overcomes the problem of explosion of complexity. In the closed-loop control system, the three phase source currents and direct current (DC) bus voltage are assumed to be available for feedback. Using the Lyapunov stability theory, it is proven that the overall control system has the global asymptotic stability. In addition, a new simple L filter design method based on the total harmonic distortion approach is also proposed. Simulations and experimental results show that the proposed controller assurances drive the tracking errors to zero with better performance, and it is robust against all uncertainties. Moreover, the proposed L filter design method matches the total harmonic distortion (THD) aim in the design with the experimental result.

Tagoro, the youngest submarine volcano of the Canary Islands, erupted in 2011 South of El Hierro Island. Pre-existing sea floor and inhabiting biological communities were buried by the newly erupted material, promoting the appearance of new habitats. The present study pursues to describe the first metazoans colonizing different new habitats formed during the eruption and to create precedent on this field. Through dredge and remote operated vehicle samplings, five main habitat types have been detected based on the substrate type and burial status after the eruption. Inside the Tagoro volcanic complex (TVC), two new habitats are located in and around the summit and main craters—hydrothermal vents with bacterial mats and sulfurous-like fields mainly colonized by small hydrozoan colonies. Two other habitats are located downslope the TVC; new hard substrate and new mixed substrate, holding the highest biodiversity of the TVC, especially at the mixed bottoms with annelids (Chloeia cf. venusta), arthropods (Monodaeus couchii and Alpheus sp.), cnidarians (Sertularella cf. tenella), and molluscs (Neopycnodonte cochlear) as the first colonizers. An impact evaluation was done comparing the communities of those habitats with the complex and well-established community described at the stable hard substrate outside the TVC, which is constituted of highly abundant hydrozoans (Aglaophenia sp.), antipatharians (Stichopates setacea and Antipathes furcata), and colonizing epibionts (e.g., Neopycnodonte cochlear). Three years after the eruption, species numbers at Tagoro were still low compared to those occurring at similar depths outside the TVC. The first dominant species at the TVC included a large proportion of common suspension feeders of the circalittoral and bathyal hard bottoms of the area, which could have exploited the uncolonized hard bottoms and the post eruptive fertilization of water masses.
