Especially, in glaucoma surgery a lot of surgical devices and techniques have been introduced during the last years. Until now, the use of these newer techniques has not been shown on a robust data basis. We herein present the numbers of different types of glaucoma surgeries performed at German hospitals between 2006 and 2018.Methods and Design: The quality reports of hospitals in Germany from 2006 to 2018 were analyzed concerning all procedural codes for glaucoma surgery and intervention. Especially, the change in usage of “classical” and “modern” surgical techniques (MIGS: “minimally invasive glaucoma surgery”) or devices was compared.Results: The number of glaucoma procedures performed increased by 75% from 27,811 in 2006 to 48,794 in 2018. Absolute numbers of trabeculectomies, goniotomies, ab externo trabeculotomies and to a certain level cyclodestructive procedures decreased during the examined years while use of MIGS has increased in absolute and relative numbers since 2012. From 2015 a strong increase in the usage of XEN implants could be seen. Drainage implants (such as Baerveldt/Ahmed) showed stable absolute numbers over the time period covered. Absolute numbers of laser trabeculoplasty peaked in 2014 and decreased afterwards. Iridotomies and iridectomies increased by 120%/248% over the whole period.Conclusion: Our data show a trend towards the modern surgical options and especially MIGS during the recent years. Classical procedures showed a decrease in total numbers emphasized from 2013. These numbers confirm the assumption that modern glaucoma surgery is becoming more and more popular and established in German hospitals.Keywords: glaucoma surgery, MIGS, trabeculectomy, laser trabeculoplasty

Executive system function, mediated largely by the prefrontal cortex (PFC), often declines significantly with normal aging in humans and non-human primates. The neural substrates of this decline are unknown, but age-related changes in the structural properties of PFC neurons could lead to altered synaptic signaling and ultimately to PFC dysfunction. The present study addressed this issue using whole-cell patch clamp assessment of excitatory and inhibitory postsynaptic currents (PSCs) in layer 2/3 pyramidal cells in in vitro slices of the PFC from behaviorally characterized young (≤12 years old) and aged (≥19 years old) rhesus monkeys. Behaviorally, aged monkeys were significantly impaired in performance on memory and executive system function tasks. Physiologically, the frequency of spontaneous glutamate receptor-mediated excitatory PSCs was significantly reduced in cells from aged monkeys, while the frequency of spontaneous GABAA receptor-mediated inhibitory PSCs was significantly increased. In contrast, there was no effect of age on the frequency, amplitude, rise time or decay time of action potential-independent miniature excitatory and inhibitory PSCs. The observed change in excitatory–inhibitory synaptic balance likely leads to significantly altered signaling properties of layer 2/3 pyramidal cells in the PFC with age. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Background: Hypersensitivity reactions (HR) are common in mastocytosis. However, little is known about triggers and risk factors. The registry of the European Competence Network on Mastocytosis (ECNM) enables reliable studies in a larger cohort of mastocytosis patients. We assessed prevalence, triggers and risk factors of HR in adults with mastocytosis in the ECNM registry., Methods: Data were collected in 27 ECNM centers. We analyzed potential triggers (Hymenoptera venoms, food, drug, inhalant and others) and risk factors at diagnosis and during follow-up. The study group consisted of 2485 adults with mastocytosis, 1379 women (55.5%) and 1106 men (44.5%). Median age was 48.2 years (range 18-91 years)., Results: Nine hundred and forty eight patients (38.1%) reported one or more HR`. Most common triggers were Hymenoptera venoms in cutaneous mastocytosis (CM) and indolent systemic mastocytosis (ISM), whereas in advanced SM (advSM), most common elicitors were drugs, including nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents and penicillin. In multivariate analyses, tryptase level < 90 ng/mL, <15% infiltration by mast cells in bone marrow biopsy-sections, and diagnosis of ISM were identified as independent risk factors for HR. For drug-induced HR, prominent risk factors were advSM and high tryptase levels. New reactions were observed in 4.8% of all patients during 4 years follow-up., Conclusions: HR are mainly triggered by Hymenoptera venoms in patients with CM and ISM and by drugs in patients with advSM. Tryptase levels <90 ng/mL, mast cell bone marrow infiltration <15%, and WHO category ISM are predictors of HR. Background: Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) is a significant public health concern that disproportionately impacts Indigenous American women more than any other ethnic/racial group in the United States., Purpose: This study aims to inform the work of nurses and allied health professionals by providing insight into the lived realities of Indigenous women in urban areas and how IPV manifests in the lives of Indigenous women., Methods: Postcolonial and Indigenous feminist frameworks informed this qualitative study. Using thematic analysis, we analyzed data from semi-structured individual interviews with 34 Indigenous women in large urban areas in the upper Midwest., Findings: This manuscript discusses one broad theme: experiences of IPV during pregnancy and the devastating impacts on women and their children in the form of intergenerational trauma. Violent behaviour perpetrated against women has long-lasting negative physical and mental health consequences for women, their children, their families, and their communities. Intimate partner violence (IPV) is associated with many adverse physical, psychological, and emotional consequences. Structural racism and historical trauma affect women's trust and further hinder the ability of Indigenous and Black women to seek help after experiencing IPV. The availability of IPV support services, which can include shelter, food, group therapy, legal assistance, and advocacy, can be inaccessible to women due to the inability to access often limited resources in urban environments and reasons compounded by potential geographic distance if living in rural areas or living in community. Understanding the unique reasons why Indigenous and Black women do not seek help, and the barriers they experience when seeking help after IPV, is critical. Pandemics have the potential to create further complexities on how IPV is experienced. Black and Indigenous women experiencing IPV were therefore at even greater risk for IPV-related harm because of state and local "stay at home" measures put in place to minimise the spread COVID-19. Background: Forensic nurse examiners, including sexual assault nurse examiners, provide care for survivors holistically through healthcare, emotional support, connection to follow-up care, safety planning, and, if desired, evidence collection to aid in the prosecution of sexual assault. There is increasing recognition that trauma-informed care must also include an understanding of the impacts of structural violence on minoritized patients to ensure health equity., Aim: To help address this guidance gap, we expanded Campbell and colleagues' empowering care model using a trauma- and violence-informed care (TVIC) lens., Methods: We used an iterative discussion-based process that included five joint meetings between a seven-member transdisciplinary research team and a five-member nurse advisory board., Results: In a TVIC-informed empowering care model, we propose behavioral examples for forensic nurses for each of Campbell et al.'s five key domains of empowering care for forensic nurse examinations (i.e., build rapport and establish trust, show compassion, provide patient-directed care, convey professionalism, and provide resource referral and follow-up)., Conclusions: These behavioral examples for nurses can help guide forensic nurse training and practice to reduce disparities in treatment and follow-up support. Objectives: Ethnic discrimination and acculturative stress play an important role in sexual risk behaviors for Latinx emerging adults, who are at disproportionate risk for sexually transmitted infections. Factors such as familism support and ethnic identity may be protective, yet research is limited. This study is guided by a culturally adapted stress and coping framework to examine associations of ethnic discrimination and acculturative stress with sexual risk behaviors (i.e., multiple sex partners, alcohol or drug use before sex, and condomless sex with a primary or casual partner), and examine the moderating roles of familism support and ethnic identity among Latinx emerging adults., Method: Participants were recruited from Arizona and Florida and were primarily female (51.3%) with a mean age of 21.48 years ( SD = 2.06). Using cross-sectional data from 158 sexually active Latinx emerging adults, this study employed multiple logistic regression and moderation analyses., Results: Higher levels of ethnic discrimination and pressure to acculturate were associated with fewer sex partners, and higher levels of pressure against acculturation were associated with increased condomless sex with a casual partner. The moderation effect of higher levels of familism support on pressure to acculturate was associated with fewer sex partners, and the moderation effect of higher levels of ethnic identity on pressure against acculturation was associated with decreased condomless sex with casual partners., Conclusions: Examining the results within a culturally informed theoretical framework supports that protective factors may help mitigate sexual risk factors among Latinx emerging adults experiencing acculturative stress. The famous amnesic patient Henry Molaison (H.M.) died on December 2, 2008. After extensive in situ magnetic resonance imaging in Boston, his brain was removed at autopsy and transported to the University of California San Diego. There the brain was prepared for frozen sectioning and cut into 2401, 70 μm coronal slices. While preliminary analyses of the brain sections have been reported, a comprehensive microscopic neuroanatomical analysis of the state of H.M.'s brain at the time of his death has not yet been published. The brain tissue and slides were subsequently moved to the University of California Davis and the slides digitized at high resolution. Initial stages of producing a website for the public viewing of the images were also carried out. Recently, the slides, digital images, and tissue have been transferred to Boston University for permanent archiving. A new steering committee has been established and plans are in place for completion of a freely accessible H.M. website. Research publications on the microscopic anatomy and neuropathology of H.M.'s brain at the time of his death are also planned. We write this commentary to provide the hippocampus and memory neuroscience communities with a brief summary of what has transpired following H.M.'s death and outline plans for future publications and a tissue archive., (© 2024 The Authors. Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a complex and pervasive public health problem disproportionately affecting Indigenous and Black women. During the COVID-19 pandemic, IPV became more complicated for advocates because social distancing, quarantine, and isolation measures further endangered women experiencing IPV. This manuscript is based on an ongoing community-engaged study in an upper Midwestern state. Our primary goal for this study is to generate urgently needed knowledge on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Indigenous and Black women's help-seeking behaviours following IPV by systematically documenting barriers women faced during the pandemic. Engaging women in a large study that seeks to garner information about their experiences of violence is complex and challenging and requires significant planning, especially for ensuring participants' safety. In this write-up, we detail the safety planning protocol developed for the purposes of recruiting and engaging women in rural and urban areas in an upper Midwestern state in the United States. Our goal is to provide scholars conducting research in the area of violence with practical considerations for safely conducting a study of this nature.

American Indian 1 (AI) women experience high rates of intimate partner violence (IPV) and face many barriers when help-seeking. This study aims to understand better the context of IPV and help-seeking behaviors for urban AI women after experiences with IPV. Postcolonial and Indigenous feminist frameworks framed this critical ethnography study. Semistructured interviews with 34 AI IPV survivors 2 living in Wisconsin urban areas were conducted. Our findings highlight context-specific structural barriers to help-seeking after experiences of IPV heightened by the COVID-19 pandemic. Context-specific and survivor-led interventions are necessary to address and reduce barriers that urban AI women face.

Purpose: Single center study to evaluate the incidence and long-term outcome of laser pointer maculopathy (LPM)., Methods: Medical records of 909,150 patients visiting our institution between 2007 and 2020 were screened in our electronic patient record system using the keywords "laserpointer," "laser pointer," and "solar.", Results: Eight patients (6/2 male/female, 11 eyes) with a history of LPM were identified by fundoscopy and optical coherence tomography (OCT), all of whom were children (6/2 male/female). Mean age at injury was 12.1 years (range 6-16). Five children (62.5%) were injured between 2019 and 2020, three (37.5%) between 2007 and 2018. Median best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) of affected eyes at first presentation was 20/25 (range 20/50-20/16). Follow-up examination was performed in seven children (10 eyes) with a median follow-up period of 18 months (range 0.5-96). BCVA improved in 4 children (5 eyes; BCVA at follow-up 20/22.5, range 20/40-20/16). Three of these four children were treated with oral steroids. OCT revealed acute signs such as intraretinal fluid to resolve quickly, while outer retinal disruption persisted until the last follow-up in eight of eleven eyes. These lesions resembled lesions of patients with solar retinopathy of which seven cases (11 eyes) were identified between 2007 and 2020., Conclusion: Readily available consumer laser pointers can damage the retina and the underlying retinal pigment epithelium, possibly leading to long-lasting visual impairments. Aims: This article discusses possible barriers to help-seeking that Indigenous and Black women encountered when seeking help related to experiences of intimate partner violence during the COVID-19 pandemic., Design: This article is focused on understanding the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on populations at highest risk for intimate partner violence in its most severe forms., Data Sources: Literature sources range from 2010 to 2022. The article is also informed by the experiences of scholars and advocates working with Indigenous and Black women experiencing intimate partner violence in Wisconsin. In our write-up, we draw on Indigenous feminism and Black feminist thought., Implications for Nursing: Help seeking is contextual. The context in which help seeking occurs or does not occur for Indigenous and Black women, due to the barriers we discuss is vital for nurses to understand in order to provide efficient and meaningful nursing care., Conclusion: Our goal is to center the nursing profession in a leadership position in addressing the complex and unique needs of Indigenous and Black women who experience the highest rates of intimate partner violence and also experience the greatest barriers to care and support., Impact: We seek to contribute theory-driven knowledge that informs the work of nurses who are often the first to encounter survivors of intimate partner violence within the clinical setting. Help-seeking is often hindered by factors such as geographic and jurisdictional, economic, and structural response barriers. Insulated concrete sandwich wall panels (ICSWPs) are gaining popularity as energy regulations become stricter worldwide. ICSWPs are now being constructed with thinner wythes and thicker insulation to keep up with the changing market, which is reducing material costs and increasing thermal and structural efficiency. However, there is a need for adequate experimental testing to validate the current design methods for these new panels. This research aims to provide that validation by comparing the predictions of four different methods with experimental data obtained from six large-scale panels. The study found that while current design methods adequately predict the behavior of thin wythe and thick insulation ICSWPs within the elastic region, they do not accurately predict their ultimate capacity.

Glaucoma and diabetes mellitus are two common chronic diseases in Europe and worldwide which require intensive therapy. Various pathophysiological mechanisms have been discussed which favour the development of glaucoma, especially in the presence of diabetes mellitus. Medicinal and surgical adjustment of intraocular pressure is associated with some limitations in patients with diabetes mellitus, for example, filtering interventions show lower success rates than in non-diabetic glaucoma patients. Background: Surgical procedures in ophthalmology are subject to fluctuations in their application and are dependent on new developments, availability, and success rates. In the field of glaucoma surgery in particular, numerous new procedures have been introduced over the last few years. So far, hardly any analyses have been done on the current application of these newer procedures. In this paper, we present the extent to which different glaucoma surgery procedures were used in German hospitals in 2019., Methods: The quality reports of German hospitals from 2019 were evaluated regarding all glaucoma-specific procedure codes. In particular, laser procedures, "classic" glaucoma procedures, and "modern" procedures such as MIGS (minimally invasive glaucoma surgery) are compared below., Results: In 2019, 49,031 glaucoma procedures were performed in German hospitals. Numerically, cyclodestructive procedures were used most frequently. MIGS accounted for approximately 10% of procedures according to the available data. Among filtering procedures, about 40% were implant-assisted., Discussion and Conclusion: On the one hand, the data analyzed show a mixed expansion of the spectrum with newer procedures such as the MIGS and implants; on the other hand, classic procedures such as cyclodestruction are still used. Layer 3 (L3) pyramidal neurons in aged rhesus monkey lateral prefrontal cortex (LPFC) exhibit significantly elevated excitability in vitro and reduced spine density compared to neurons in young subjects. The time-course of these alterations, and whether they can be ameliorated in middle age by the powerful anti-oxidant curcumin is unknown. We compared the properties of L3 pyramidal neurons from the LPFC of behaviorally characterized rhesus monkeys over the adult lifespan using whole-cell patch clamp recordings and neuronal reconstructions. Working memory (WM) impairment, neuronal hyperexcitability, and spine loss began in middle age. There was no significant relationship between neuronal properties and WM performance. Middle-aged subjects given curcumin exhibited better WM performance and less neuronal excitability compared to control subjects. These findings suggest that the appropriate time frame for intervention for age-related cognitive changes is early middle age, and points to the efficacy of curcumin in delaying WM decline. The purpose of this theoretical article is to analyze the utility of postcolonial, Black, and Chicana feminist frameworks to inform nursing research and practice specific to mental health needs of Latina women migrant farmworkers. Twentieth-century Western feminist narratives overlooked the intersecting systems of oppression experienced by women of color, including Latina women. Feminist epistemologies are useful in understanding the complex sociopolitical contexts that have impacted women's health outcomes and well-being. Background: Unmet health needs of women with head injuries sustained by intimate partner violence (IPV) include risk of traumatic brain injury (TBI). The purpose of this evaluation was to explore the potential effectiveness of TBI screening as a health promotion strategy for shelter-seeking women with IPV head injuries. We wanted to learn if shelter-seeking women, willing to disclose IPV, would accept TBI screening if offered. Methods: An extended version of the HELPS TBI screening tool and survey of daily symptoms and health needs were used to screen new residents of an urban shelter for women. Results: The participants ( N  = 18) primarily were educated black women with one or more self-reported IPV-related head injury. Most participants (77.8%) had positive TBI screens for probable brain injury. The majority (88.8%) lived with one or more daily symptoms they did not have before sustaining a IPV head injury. The symptoms reported most frequently were depression (88.9%), anxiety (77.8%), and headache (66.7%). All participants had one or more unmet health need. Although most (77.8%) needed to see a primary care provider, mental health care was the most important health need identified. Conclusions: TBI screening could be considered an effective health promotion strategy for IPV survivors if screening facilitates treatment for positive screens and other unmet health needs. Intersectionality theory has been used by nursing scholars to offer insight into how multiple systems of oppression mutually interact to impact health and to examine how multiple social modes of existence shape individual and group experiences of health inequality. The application of intersectionality theory, however, requires a reflexive critical lens to more effectively inform nursing science and practice. We draw on a comprehensive integrative literature review to offer a critical reflection by considering the semantic and structural consistency, generalizability, simplicity and complexity, and the utility and value of intersectionality theory to nursing science and practice. If nurses are to effectively utilize intersectionality theory, it is essential that we are able to analyze and speak to the multiple modes of existence based on historical, social, economic, and political processes that impact the health of those we serve. The purpose of this theoretical article is to analyze the utility of postcolonial and Indigenous feminist frameworks in informing nursing research and practice specific to addressing intimate partner violence (IPV) in the lives of Indigenous women. Prevailing feminist narratives of the 20th century focused overwhelmingly on patriarchy as the sole source of oppression against women and root cause of IPV. These narratives failed to consider the complex historical ways in which patriarchy intersected with colonialism and racism to produce violence, affecting the contemporary realities of Indigenous women. In contrast, postcolonial and Indigenous feminist frameworks consider the colonial history that has disempowered Indigenous women and their nations over centuries of settler occupation. Situating IPV within historical, legal, social, and political contexts can unmask how current research and health care discourses may continue to constrain, rather than improve, access, care, and services for Indigenous victims of IPV.

Personal and planetary environmental justice has become a driving force for innovation in nursing science. The purpose of our Critical Environmental Justice Nursing for Planetary Health Framework is to guide this work by applying critical theory to the way we conceptualize the root causes of environmental injustices. The framework calls for more ethical responses to injustices and challenges the biohierarchical belief that nonmales, non-Whites, and nonhumans are lesser beings that can be made profitable. Women's experiences of sexual assault are rooted in and informed by a history that nurses need to understand in order to provide meaningful and effective care. In this article, we present a comprehensive literature review guided by intersectionality theory to deepen our understanding of the historical role that hegemonic masculinity plays in shaping ethnic minority women's experiences of sexual assault. Final sources included were analyzed using thematic analysis. On the basis of our analyses, we identified 4 themes: social order hierarchies, "othering" dynamics, economic labor divisions, and negative media/mass communication depiction. Our findings contribute to our understanding of these important histories that speak to the trauma of sexual violence inflicted upon the bodies of ethnic minority women, which we can incorporate into nursing education curricula. Incorporating this knowledge would equip nurses and allied health professionals with the necessary knowledge and skills that would enable them to help patients navigate multiple systems of oppression as they engage in help seeking following a sexual assault experience. This knowledge also acknowledges rather than dismisses the historically acceptable use of sexual violence against ethnic minority women. Background: One of the poorest countries in the world, Malawi's palliative care system is under-resourced, and one-third of the population is food-insecure., Aims: This study describes the lived experience of female palliative care patients, and their caregivers, and aimed to: (1) analyse their physical, spiritual and mental health needs; and (2) analyse best palliative nursing practice for patients at the end of life. An unexpected finding was the impact of food insecurity on the women and their caregivers., Methods: We conducted interviews with 26 women who at the end of life and 14 of their caregivers. All were participating in a community palliative care programme offered by an AIDS support organisation in Kasungu, Malawi. We used deductive qualitative analysis to organise identified themes using the four pillars of food security: availability, access, utilisation and stability., Findings: All study participants experienced challenges with food security., Conclusions: We offer policy recommendations for palliative care nurses, and other allied health professionals.

We report on 18 patients with myeloid neoplasms and associated tyrosine kinase (TK) fusion genes on treatment with the TK inhibitors (TKI) ruxolitinib (PCM1-JAK2, n = 8; BCR-JAK2, n = 1) and imatinib, nilotinib or dasatinib (ETV6-ABL1, n = 9). On ruxolitinib (median 24 months, range 2-36 months), a complete hematologic response (CHR) and complete cytogenetic response (CCR) was achieved by five of nine and two of nine patients, respectively. However, ruxolitinib was stopped in eight of nine patients because of primary resistance (n = 3), progression (n = 3) or planned allogeneic stem cell transplantation (allo SCT, n = 2). At a median of 36 months (range 4-78 months) from diagnosis, five of nine patients are alive: four of six patients after allo SCT and one patient who remains on ruxolitinib. In ETV6-ABL1 positive patients, a durable CHR was achieved by four of nine patients (imatinib with one of five, nilotinib with two of three, dasatinib with one of one). Because of inadequate efficacy (lack of hematological and/or cytogenetic/molecular response), six of nine patients (imatinib, n = 5; nilotinib, n = 1) were switched to nilotinib or dasatinib. At a median of 23 months (range 3-60 months) from diagnosis, five of nine patients are in CCR or complete molecular response (nilotinib, n = 2; dasatinib, n = 2; allo SCT, n = 1) while two of nine patients have died. We conclude that (a) responses on ruxolitinib may only be transient in the majority of JAK2 fusion gene positive patients with allo SCT being an important early treatment option, and (b) nilotinib or dasatinib may be more effective than imatinib to induce durable complete remissions in ETV6-ABL1 positive patients., (© 2020 The Authors. Gender inequality in the form of gender-based violence manifests throughout the course of women's lives but has a particularly unique impact at end of life. We sampled 26 patients and 14 caregivers for this qualitative critical ethnographic study. The study purpose was to describe the lived experience of female palliative care patients in rural Malawi and their caregivers. The specific aims were to (i) analyse physical, spiritual and mental health needs and (ii) guide best healthcare practice. The study was informed by feminist epistemology, which drew us to an analysis focused on how gender inequality and gender-based violence affect the care of those with terminal illness. In this article, based on our findings, we demonstrate how gender inequality manifests through the intersecting gendered vulnerabilities of patients and their caregivers in rural Malawi. The findings specifically provide insight into the gendered nature of care work and how the gendered life trajectories of both patients and caregivers intersect to impact the health and well-being of both groups. Our findings have implications on how palliative care can be scaled up in rural Malawi in support of women who are experiencing intimate partner violence at end of life, and the caregivers responsible for their well-being.

In the BACHD mouse model of Huntington's disease (HD), deletion of the N17 domain of the Huntingtin gene (BACHDΔN17, Q97) has been reported to lead to nuclear accumulation of mHTT and exacerbation of motor deficits, neuroinflammation and striatal atrophy (Gu et al., 2015). Here we characterized the effect of N17 deletion on dorsolateral striatal medium spiny neurons (MSNs) in BACHDΔN17 (Q97) and BACWTΔN17 (Q31) mice by comparing them to MSNs in wildtype (WT) mice. Mice were characterized on a series of motor tasks and subsequently whole cell patch clamp recordings with simultaneous biocytin filling of MSNs in in vitro striatal slices from these mice were used to comprehensively assess their physiological and morphological features. Key findings include that: Q97 mice exhibit impaired gait and righting reflexes but normal tail suspension reflexes and normal coats while Q31 mice do not differ from WT; intrinsic membrane and action potential properties are altered -but differentially so- in MSNs from Q97 and from Q31 mice; excitatory and inhibitory synaptic currents exhibit higher amplitudes in Q31 but not Q97 MSNs, while excitatory synaptic currents occur at lower frequency in Q97 than in WT and Q31 MSNs; there is a reduced total dendritic length in Q31 -but not Q97- MSNs compared to WT, while spine density and number did not differ in MSNs in the three groups. The findings that Q31 MSNs differed from Q97 and WT neurons with regard to some physiological features and structurally suggest a novel role of the N17 domain in the function of WT Htt. The motor phenotype seen in Q97 mice was less robust than that reported in an earlier study (Gu et al., 2015), and the alterations to MSN physiological properties were largely consistent with changes reported previously in a number of other mouse models of HD. Together this study indicates that N17 plays a role in the modulation of the properties of MSNs in both mHtt and WT-Htt mice, but does not markedly exacerbate HD-like pathogenesis in the BACHD model., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist.

The remnants of colonialism manifesting as structural violence, racism, and oppression continue to plague our society as evidenced by the persistence of health inequities, particularly for minority populations in the United States. As a profession bound by moral and ethical mandates, nursing must resist and deconstruct oppression in all its forms. Nurses, informed by critical race theory, intersectionality, and historical trauma, can become formidable allies with marginalized populations in the fight for social justice and health equity.

Purpose: Intraocular pressure (IOP) measurement can be performed with different methods. Newer methods have to be compared to the standard method, the Goldmann applanation tonometry (GAT). We herein compare two air-puff tonometers, the non-contact tonometer (Tomey NCT) and the Corvis ST (CST) with GAT in eyes with a broad spectrum of IOP., Methods: Two hundred and forty-nine eyes of 249 patients (with diagnosis of either glaucoma or ocular hypertension) were included in this monocenter prospective cohort study. Each eye underwent IOP measurements via GAT, NCT and CST. Bland-Altman plots were calculated to compare the different methods in the three groups. Paired t tests were used for statistical comparison between the three measurement methods. The difference between the different methods was tested on correlation against central corneal thickness (CCT)., Results: Mean IOP in GAT was 17.6 mmHg (standard deviation (SD) 5.9), 16.3 mmHg (SD 5.6) in NCT and 18.0 mmHg (SD 5.5) in CST. Comparisons between GAT and CST vs. NCT showed significant differences (p < 0.001), while GAT vs. CST showed no significant difference (p = 0.1162). Mean CCT was 538.7 µm (SD 35.1)., Conclusions: Mean values of GAT and CST show comparable results. However, both GAT and CST differ significantly from NCT. NCT shows lower IOP values compared to both other methods.

Measuring the intraocular pressure in eyes with corneal diseases or after corneal interventions often results in false values due to abnormal corneal biomechanics. Many different approaches are used to compensate for these abnormal corneal biomechanic properties, with varying measuring methods. There are differences when these alternative measuring methods are compared to the gold standard, applanation tonometry according to Goldmann. These differences vary between the methods and with different corneal changes. There is no clear recommendation on a precise method that is suitable for every pathological cornea. Emerging studies suggest a role for tau in regulating the biology of RNA binding proteins (RBPs). We now show that reducing the RBP T-cell intracellular antigen 1 (TIA1) in vivo protects against neurodegeneration and prolongs survival in transgenic P301S Tau mice. Biochemical fractionation shows co-enrichment and co-localization of tau oligomers and RBPs in transgenic P301S Tau mice. Reducing TIA1 decreased the number and size of granules co-localizing with stress granule markers. Decreasing TIA1 also inhibited the accumulation of tau oligomers at the expense of increasing neurofibrillary tangles. Despite the increase in neurofibrillary tangles, TIA1 reduction increased neuronal survival and rescued behavioral deficits and lifespan. These data provide in vivo evidence that TIA1 plays a key role in mediating toxicity and further suggest that RBPs direct the pathway of tau aggregation and the resulting neurodegeneration. We propose a model in which dysfunction of the translational stress response leads to tau-mediated pathology.

Background: The dislocation of the crystalline lens is a common finding in patients with Marfan syndrome (MFS). Scleral intraocular lens (IOL) fixation is an accepted treatment method of this complication. To now, no long-term data on scleral IOL fixation in MFS exist., Methods: We present a retrospective study of 27 eyes of 17 MFS patients that underwent scleral lens fixation at our clinic between 1999 and 2012. These patients are compared to an age- and surgeon-matched group of 31 eyes of 27 patients who underwent the same procedure for reasons other than MFS., Results: The median age in the MFS group was 35.4 years versus 35.6 years in the non-MFS group. The median follow-up was 4 years for MFS and 3 years for non-MFS. In the MFS group, significantly more IOL-dislocations occurred than compared to the non-MFS group (30% vs. 6.5%, p = 0.02). Retinal detachment occurred in four MFS-eyes compared to three eyes in the non-MFS group. Biometry prediction error was 1.11 diopters (D) for MFS and 1.33 D for non-MFS (p = 0.11). Median BCVA (best-corrected visual acuity, logMAR) was 0.1 in the MFS group versus 0.3 in non-MFS patients., Conclusion: Scleral lens fixation in MFS patients achieves satisfying visual and refractive outcomes. Our data shows a significantly higher rate of IOL dislocations in patients with MFS. We therefore recommend addressing this complication preoperatively.

Background With the help of reporting systems, errors that occur in medical settings can be documented and can lead to an improved workflow. We, herein, present data from our reporting system that we have used since 2012. Materials and Methods All reports since 2012 were evaluated and analyzed regarding the annual rate of reportings, who reported and what reasons were suspected to be causative for the reported errors. Results Over the last five years a mean of 33 reports were given annually. While mostly doctors reported in the first year, the following years showed almost balanced reports from medical assistant staff and doctors. Not all of these reports resulted in actions. The most often stated reason for errors or critical situations was miscommunication between the staff. Conclusion Our data show that a constant number of reports can be obtained over at least five years from doctors as well as medical assistant staff. The main reason for critical situations seems to be miscommunication.
