Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) are widely considered a pathway to achieve low carbon mobility. BEVs emit zero emissions from the tailpipe, but their life cycle carbon reduction compared to gasoline vehicles varies based on primary energy sources, electricity generation, and use efficiency. The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region is an area rich in fossil fuels, meriting a detailed comparison between the emissions from BEV and other powertrains. We developed a MENA‐specific life cycle model that estimates well‐to‐wheel (WTW) greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from passenger transport with internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEVs), hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), plug‐in hybrid electric vehicles, and BEVs. MENA's average WTW GHG emissions for all supply chain steps including combustion emissions from vehicle operation are 767 g/kWh and 84 g CO2eq/MJ for electricity and gasoline, respectively, but are highly variable due to heterogeneity in upstream supply chains. The use of hybrid gasoline ICEVs provides the largest emission reduction opportunity for existing vehicle fleets in 9 of the 16 MENA countries. For these nine countries, replacing gasoline ICEVs with HEVs could, on average, reduce country‐level life cycle GHG emissions by 47%. There is a similar emission reduction opportunity for 14 of the 16 MENA countries when normalizing vehicle efficiencies irrespective of the powertrain shares and other trends in existing vehicle fleets. Future scenario analysis shows that BEVs would have the lowest WTW GHG emissions among all powertrains in most MENA countries only if significantly reduced electricity transmission losses and cleaner grid mix are realized, although a high cost of infrastructure developments is expected. The MIXv2 Asian emission inventory is developed under the framework of the Model Inter-Comparison Study for Asia (MICS-Asia) Phase IV and produced from a mosaic of up-to-date regional emission inventories. We estimated the emissions for anthropogenic and biomass burning sources covering 23 countries and regions in East, Southeast and South Asia and aggregated emissions to a uniform spatial and temporal resolution for seven sectors: power, industry, residential, transportation, agriculture, open biomass burning and shipping. Compared to MIXv1, we extended the dataset to 2010–2017, included emissions of open biomass burning and shipping, and provided model-ready emissions of SAPRC99, SAPRC07, and CB05. A series of unit-based point source information was incorporated covering power plants in China and India. A consistent speciation framework for non-methane volatile organic compounds (NMVOCs) was applied to develop emissions by three chemical mechanisms. The total Asian emissions for anthropogenic/open biomass sectors in 2017 are estimated as follows: 41.6/1.1 Tg NO x , 33.2/0.1 Tg SO 2 , 258.2/20.6 Tg CO, 61.8/8.2 Tg NMVOC, 28.3/0.3 Tg NH 3 , 24.0/2.6 Tg PM 10 , 16.7/2.0 Tg PM 2.5 , 2.7/0.1 Tg BC (black carbon), 5.3/0.9 Tg OC (organic carbon), and 18.0/0.4 Pg CO 2. The contributions of India and Southeast Asia were emerging in Asia during 2010–2017, especially for SO 2 , NH 3 and particulate matter. Gridded emissions at a spatial resolution of 0.1° with monthly variations are now publicly available. High levels of sulfur dioxide (SO2) due to human activities pose a serious air pollution issue in China, especially in urban agglomerations. However, limited research has investigated the impact of anthropogenic emissions on higher SO2 concentrations in urban regions compared to rural areas in China. Here, we analyzed the trends in SO2 concentrations from 1980 to 2021 in China using the Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications, version 2 (MERRA-2) dataset. SO2 column concentrations from the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) and the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) during the years 2007–2021 were also examined for validation and comparison purposes. Eight representative areas, including four urban regions (Pearl River Delta [PRD], Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei [BTH], Yangtze River Delta [YRD], and Sichuan Basin [SCB]) and four rural regions (Northeast Region [NER], Mongolian Region [MR], West Region [WR], and Tibetan Plateau Region [TR]) were selected for the analysis. Overall, a significant but fluctuating increase in SO2 concentrations over China was observed during 1980–2021. During 1980–1997 and 2000–2010, there was an increase in SO2 concentration, while during 1997–2000 and 2010–2021, a decreasing trend was observed. The average increase in SO2 concentration was approximately 16 times higher in urban regions than in the rural background. We also found that SO2 dynamics were highly associated with expansion of urban areas, population density, and gross domestic product. Nonetheless, since 2007, SO2 concentrations have exhibited a downward trend, which is mainly attributed to the air pollution policies implemented by the Chinese government. Diffractive optical elements (DOEs) with rotationally symmetric phase distribution are mainly produced by laser direct writing technique in a polar coordinate system, which has slow processing speed and limited fabrication area. In this paper, we propose a digital micro-mirror device maskless digital lithography technique based on stepwise rotary stitching. DOEs with rotationally symmetric phase distribution are fabricated by exposure of stitching units and rotation of rotary tables. Then, different stitching units are designed to compensate for the errors caused by the accuracy of the rotary table. Finally, the high quality DOEs are produced by the double-exposure method. When increasing the fabrication area, significantly improves the saw-tooth of the lithography pattern edge while reducing misalignment and overlap of stitching caused by residual errors. The diameter of the fabricated Fresnel zone plate was increased from 5.25 mm to 11.40 mm, and the fabrication area was 4.72 times larger than conventional lithography. The stitching error of 18.95 μ m has been eliminated after optimization, and the pixelization has been smoothed. The diffraction results show that the method not only can produce large area and high-quality diffraction elements but also greatly reduce the processing cost. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Vehicle electrification is considered a pathway for on-road transportation decarbonization in China. Different from the conventional gasoline vehicles whose emissions are mainly released from vehicle tailpipes, emissions of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) are from the upstream processes of electricity generation and vehicle manufacturing, thus a comprehensive lifecycle analysis and comparison of BEVs with gasoline vehicles is required to quantify the emission mitigation benefit of vehicle electrification and determine the path to a carbon-neutral future. In the study, we compare the cradle-to-grave (C2G) lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions of gasoline and electric vehicles in China and analyze the greenhouse gas emission reduction of vehicle electrification in different provinces. Results show that under the current technologies, the national average C2G GHG emissions for battery electric vehicles (BEVs) of 100 miles (i.e., 160 km) and 300 miles (i.e., 480 km) all-electric range (AER) are 231 and 279 g CO2eq/km, respectively, 22% and 5% lower than those for gasoline internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEVs). Improving vehicle fuel efficiency by hybridizing gasoline ICEVs can effectively reduce C2G emissions to 212 g CO2eq/km. At the provincial level, C2G GHG emissions of BEVs vary according to the provincial electricity mix. In eight provinces, C2G GHG emissions of BEVs with 300 miles AER (BEV300s) are higher than those of gasoline ICEVs due to the GHG-intensive coal-based electricity mix. In the future scenario, with low carbon fuels (such as high-level bioethanol blending gasoline) and electricity decarbonization, the national average C2G emissions of hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) and BEV300s can be reduced to 55 and 73 g CO2eq/km, respectively. Objective. An increasing risk of developing osteoporosis which is characterized by bone production weakness and microarchitectural deterioration is found among postmenopausal women. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are secreted into the circulation from cells of various tissues in response to local disease severity including bone diseases. Herein, we set out to identify candidate miRNAs predictable for osteoporosis incidence in postmenopausal elderly women. Methods. The circulating miRNA expression profiles deposited in the dataset accessioned as GSE201543 were downloaded from the GEO database. The study included 176 postmenopausal women who underwent BMD testing, including 96 women reporting osteoporosis and 70 women reporting normal BMD. All subjects were submitted their serum samples for measurements of bone metabolism markers. Results. The miRNA expression profiles of the GSE201543 dataset were differentially analyzed and found 97 miRNAs being upregulated concomitantly with 31 miRNAs being downregulated in the serum samples between osteoporotic postmenopausal women and postmenopausal women with normal BMD. Osteoporotic postmenopausal women were demonstrated with elevated serum levels of miR-340-5p and miR-506-3p when compared to normal postmenopausal women. Pearson correlation analysis demonstrated that circulating miR-340-5p and miR-506-3p expressions were increased as BAP, β-CTx, and PINP levels increased, but osteocalcin and 25-(OH)VitD levels are declined in osteoporotic postmenopausal women. Results of the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and the area under the ROC curve (AUC) showed circulating miR-340-5p and miR-506-3p expressions alone or combined together produced 0.843 AUC, 0.851 AUC, and 0.935 AUC, respectively, when used to predict the incidence of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. Conclusion. Our work suggested that circulating miR-340-5p and miR-506-3p function as osteo-miRNAs in postmenopausal women and may serve as potential noninvasive biomarkers for the incidence of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. Global crude‐oil transportation contributes a significant portion of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the marine transportation sector. In this work, we first compile a detailed country‐level global crude‐oil transportation network in 2018 and estimate that the direct and well‐to‐hull GHG emissions related to crude transportation were 97 and 109 million metric tons, respectively. Combining with the country‐specific crude recovery GHG intensities, the consumption‐based well‐to‐country‐gate crude‐oil GHG intensities are derived for individual countries, ranging from 2.99 to 27.32 g CO2eq/MJ, with a global crude‐volume‐weighted average of 8.67 g CO2eq/MJ. We then project the global crude transportation emissions at the regional level in 2050 under a static (no change) scenario (based on current ship energy efficiency) and a sustainable‐development (SD) scenario (based on the International Energy Agency's projections of ship energy efficiency and penetration of alternative marine fuels). Results show that the global well‐to‐hull GHG emissions related to crude transportation would be 82 and 59 million metric tons in 2050 in the static and SD scenarios, respectively. To further evaluate the impact of potential fuel‐switching on decarbonizing the crude oil transportation sector, we estimate the GHG emissions for 20 fuel/production options in 2050. We find that, in comparison to the static scenario, ∼50% reduction in global well‐to‐hull GHG emissions from crude transportation could be achieved under the SD scenario if green ammonia further replaces conventional ammonia. The methodology developed here can be applied to other commodities to estimate the emissions associated with their global marine transportation and to evaluate the potential emission mitigation options. Real-time and fast trapping and tagging of microfeatures, such as microparticles and cells, are of great significance for biomedical research. In this work, we propose a novel in situ digital projection lithography technology that integrates real-time, in situ generation of digital masks for particle processing and fluid control into conventional DMD-based projection lithography. With the help of image recognition technology, we rapidly resolve the information of the microparticle profile or channel location, combining the selection of existing masks of different shapes, thus enabling in situ generation of user-customized micro-trap arrays and microfilter arrays for particle trapping and tagging. The success in trapping and filtering single particles, particle arrays, and cells has indicated the promising prospects of this novel technology for broad applications in microfluidics, single-cell analysis, and early-stage disease diagnostics. Taraxacum kok‐saghyz Rodin (TKS) is an important potential alternative source of natural inulin and rubber production, which has great significance for the production of industrial products. In this study, we sequenced 58 wild TKS individuals collected from four different geography regions worldwide to elucidate the population structure, genetic diversity, and the patterns of evolution. Also, the first flowering time, crown diameter, morphological characteristics of leaf, and scape of all TKS individuals were measured and evaluated statistically. Phylogenetic analysis based on SNPs and cluster analysis based on agronomic traits showed that all 58 TKS individuals could be roughly divided into three distinct groups: (a) Zhaosu County in Xinjiang (population AB, including a few individuals from population C and D); (b) Tekes County in Xinjiang (population C); and (c) Tuzkol lake in Kazakhstan (population D). Population D exhibited a closer genetic relationship with population C compared with population AB. Genetic diversity analysis further revealed that population expansion from C and D to AB occurred, as well as gene flow between them. Additionally, some natural selection regions were identified in AB population. Function annotation of candidate genes identified in these regions revealed that they mainly participated in biological regulation processes, such as transporter activity, structural molecule activity, and molecular function regulator. We speculated that the genes identified in selective sweep regions may contribute to TKS adaptation to the Yili River Valley of Xinjiang. In general, this study provides new insights in clarifying population structure and genetic diversity analysis of TKS using SNP molecular markers and agronomic traits. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
