Although identified as a feature of the film by both critics and researchers, the narrative complexity of Perfect Blue (Satoshi Kon, Madhouse, 1997) has been ambiguously defined. In this article, the authors examine the complex narration in Kon's first feature film, equivocal and obscure in its more confusing points, through a narratological analysis of the film's most ambiguous scenes. Using cognitive film theory as introduced by David Bordwell and Edward Branigan, they link its approach in terms of the modulation of information flow throughout the film – high knowledgeability, high self-consciousness and (occasionally) low communicativeness – with the conventions of the slasher genre. Their analysis of the more perplexing scenes in Perfect Blue is reinforced by monitoring the veiled changes of focalization between the film's three focalizers: Mima, Uchida (aka Me-Mania) and Rumi. In order to do this, they explore how the narration – in the tradition of contemporary puzzle films – makes use of judgements, preconceptions and cognitive illusions in the spectators' activity to conceal Rumi's involvement in the persecution of Mima and the murders committed. In the conclusion, they associate the film's complex narration with its critical commentary on the representation of Japanese pop idols (and former idols) and the state of audiovisual entertainment in Japan. The self-styled #Littlesecretfilm phenomenon is a low-cost film production and distribution movement that was launched in Spain in 2013. Based on a reconstruction and examination of its development from its foundation (with the publication of a manifesto in the form of ten commandments) through to its products (a full survey of which are presented here), this article offers a meaningful and not entirely uncritical snapshot of a conscious proposal of a low-cost production model in contemporary Spain. In our conclusion, we tie this film movement in with international debates about the viability of a low-cost approach in the context of a national film industry that has been left badly battered by the financial crisis that began in 2008. The article describes a catalogue of rhetorical resources implemented by the cinemas of the 21st century. Rhetorical resources are classified into these two blocks for reasons of methodological imperative and clarity of explanation. It explores the relationship of film discourse with other audiovisual media.

The current article offers an exploration of the incipient development of crowdfunding anime projects for short and medium-length films. Japanese commercial animation is characterized by the support of a strong production industry that primarily targets local audiences through cross-media projects, developed in synergy with other cultural sectors (such as the publishing industry, record labels, or video game developers). The growing acceptance of anime in markets around the world has strengthened it as one of the most well-known forms of Japanese popular culture and has also resulted in changes to some of the dominant dynamics of its production to adapt to technological innovations. One of these changes has been the rise of crowdfunding, an increasingly popular form of financing involving the patronage of fans from all corners of the world who want to participate in these audiovisual projects. This article analyses the response to some of the more popular initiatives from a historiographical perspective on the production and reception of commercial animation and the main theories related to the relationship between the hyperactive nature of Japanese fandom and collective financing. The conclusions include the confirmation of the increasing receptiveness to anime crowdfunding among potential sponsors—especially among fans based outside Japan on platforms with a global reach, such as Kickstarter—and a consideration of the transformative potential of this phenomenon for a precarious industry and its usefulness as a tool for exploring the viability of the production and distribution of projects by animation studios.
