Context Astragalus polysaccharide (APS) is a new tumour therapeutic drug, that has an inhibitory effect on a variety of solid tumours. Tumour cell immunosuppression is related to the up-regulation of programmed death ligand 1 (PD-L1). However, whether APS exerts its antitumor effect by regulating PD-L1 remains unclear.Objective To explore whether APS exerts its antineoplastic effect via regulating PD-L1-mediated immunosuppression in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).Materials and methods SMMC-7721 cells were subcutaneous injected into BALB/C mice for HCC model establishment. Mice were intraperitoneally injected with 100, 200 and 400 mg/kg APS for 12 days. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) was performed to assess CD8+ T cells' rate and PD-L1 level in HCC tissues. HCC cells were pre-treated with 0.1, 0.5 and 1 mg/mL APS for 4 h, then were treated with 10 ng/mL IFN-γ 24 h. PD-L1 level and cell apoptosis was detected by flow cytometry. PD-L1 and Moesin (MSN) proteins were measured by western blot. MiR-133a-3p and MSN mRNA levels were assessed by qRT-PCR. The targets of miR-133a-3p were predicted by starBase, and which was verified by dual-luciferase reporter assay.Results Our findings illustrated that APS dose-dependently inhibited HCC growth tested with IC50 values of 4.2 mg/mL, and IFN-γ-induced PD-L1 expression and attenuated PD-L1-mediated immunosuppression in HCC cells. APS attenuated PD-L1-mediated immunosuppression via miR-133a-3p in HCC cells. Besides, miR-133a-3p targeted to MSN, and MSN inhibited the antitumor effect of APS by maintaining the stability of PD-L1. Moreover, APS attenuated PD-L1-mediated immunosuppression via the miR-133a-3p/MSN axis.Conclusions APS attenuated PD-L1-mediated immunosuppression via miR-133a-3p/MSN axis to develop an antitumor effect. APS may be an effective drug for HCC treatment.

BackgroundIrreversible electroporation (IRE) is a novel local tumor ablation approach with the potential to stimulate an antitumor immune response. However, it is not effective in preventing distant metastasis in isolation. This study aimed to compare the potential of augmenting the antitumor immune response in patients with locally advanced pancreatic cancer (LAPC) who underwent IRE combined with chemotherapy and PD-1/PD-L1 blockade with those who underwent IRE combined with chemotherapy.MethodsA retrospective review was conducted on LAPC patients treated either with IRE in combination with chemotherapy and PD-1/PD-L1 blockade (group A) or with IRE with chemotherapy alone (group B) from July 2015 to June 2021. The primary outcomes were overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS), with immune responses and adverse events serving as secondary endpoints. Risk factors for OS and PFS were identified using univariate and multivariate analyses.ResultsA total of 103 patients were included in the final analysis, comprising 25 in group A and 78 in group B. The median duration of follow-up was 18.2 months (3.0–38.6 months). Group A patients demonstrated improved survival compared to group B (median OS: 23.6 vs. 19.4 months, p = 0.001; median PFS: 18.2 vs. 14.7 months, p = 0.022). The data suggest a robust immune response in group A, while adverse events related to the treatment were similar in both groups. The multivariate analysis identified the combination of IRE, chemotherapy, and PD-1/PD-L1 blockade as an independent prognostic factor for OS and PFS.ConclusionThe addition of PD-1/PD-L1 blockade to the regimen of IRE combined with chemotherapy enhanced antitumor immunity and extended survival in LAPC patients.

“The Expert Group on Tumor Ablation Therapy of Chinese Medical Doctor Association, The Tumor Ablation Committee of Chinese College of Interventionalists, The Society of Tumor Ablation Therapy of Chinese Anti-Cancer Association and The Ablation Expert Committee of the Chinese Society of Clinical Oncology” have organized multidisciplinary experts to formulate the consensus for thermal ablation of pulmonary subsolid nodules or ground-glass nodule (GGN). The expert consensus reviews current literatures and provides clinical practices for thermal ablation of GGN. The main contents include: (1) clinical evaluation of GGN, (2) procedures, indications, contraindications, outcomes evaluation and related complications of thermal ablation for GGN and (3) future development directions.

Introduction Unresectable hilar cholangiocarcinoma (UHC) is a malignant tumor and has a poor prognosis. IRE is a novel non-thermal ablative therapy that causes cellular apoptosis via electrical impulses. To compare the curative effect for UHC, chemotherapy plus concurrent IRE and chemotherapy alone were set up. Materials and methods From July 2015 to May 2019, 47 patients with UHC were analyzed to chemotherapy + IRE group (n = 23) or chemotherapy alone group (n = 24) in this study. Treatment response was assessed with computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) 1 month after treatment and every 3 months thereafter. Local tumor progression (LTP), time to LTP, overall survival (OS) and procedure-related complications were compared between the two groups. Results Chemotherapy plus concurrent IRE group showed a tendency toward a decreased rate of LTP (16.7% vs. 39.5%; p = 0.039) and an increased complete response rate (52.2% vs. 12.5%; p = 0.011) compared with chemotherapy alone group. Time to LTP was significantly longer in the chemotherapy plus concurrent IRE group compared to chemotherapy alone group (11.2 months vs. 4.2 months; p = 0.001). Median OS was significantly longer in the chemotherapy plus concurrent IRE group compared to chemotherapy alone group (19.6 months vs. 10.2 months; p = 0.001). Conclusions Chemotherapy plus concurrent IRE improved local control and prolonged time to LTP and OS in patients with UHC.

Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN1) is an inherited disease caused by mutations in the MEN1 gene encoding a nuclear protein menin. Among those different endocrine tumors of MEN1, the pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (PNETs) are life-threatening and frequently implicated. Since there are uncertainties in genotype and phenotype relationship and there are species differences between humans and mice, it is worth it to replenish the mice model with human cell resources. Here, we tested whether the patient-origin induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) lines could phenocopy some defects of MEN1. In vitro β-cell differentiation revealed that the percentage of insulin-positive cells and insulin secretion were increased by at least two-fold in MEN1-iPSC derived cells, which was mainly resulted from significantly higher proliferative activities in the pancreatic progenitor stage (Day 7–13). This scenario was paralleled with increased expressions of prohormone convertase1/3 (PC1/3), glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), GLP-1R, and factors in the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)/AKT signal pathway, and the GLP-1R was mainly expressed in β-like cells. Blockages of either GLP-1R or PI3K significantly reduced the percentages of insulin-positive cells and hypersecretion of insulin in MEN1-derived cells. Furthermore, in transplantation of different stages of MEN1-derived cells into immune-deficient mice, only those β-like cells produced tumors that mimicked the features of the PNETs from the original patient. To the best of our knowledge, this was the first case using patient-origin iPSCs modeling most phenotypes of MEN1, and the results suggested that GLP-1R may be a potential therapeutic target for MEN1-related hyperinsulinemia.

The primary problem associated with fibrosarcoma is its high potential to metastasize to the lung. Aberrant expression of SAPCD2 has been widely reported to be implicated in the progression and metastasis in multiple cancer types. However, the clinical significance and biological roles of SAPCD2 in fibrosarcoma remain unknown. Here, we reported that SAPCD2 expression was markedly elevated in fibrosarcoma tissues, and its expression was differentially upregulated in fibrosarcoma cell lines compared with that in several primary fibroblast cell lines. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis revealed that SAPCD2 overexpression was significantly correlated with early progression and metastasis, and poor prognosis in fibrosarcoma patients. Our results further showed that silencing SAPCD2 inhibited the proliferation and increased the apoptosis of fibrosarcoma cells in vitro. Importantly, silencing SAPCD2 repressed lung metastasis of fibrosarcoma cells in vivo. Mechanistic investigation further demonstrated that silencing SAPCD2 inhibited the proliferation and lung metastasis of fibrosarcoma cells by activating the Hippo signaling pathway, as evidenced by the finding that constitutively active YAP1, YAP1-S127A, significantly reversed the inhibitory effect of SAPCD2 downregulation on the colony formation and anchorage-independent growth capabilities of fibrosarcoma cells, as well as the stimulatory effect on the apoptotic ratio of fibrosarcoma cells. In conclusion, SAPCD2 promotes the proliferation and lung metastasis of fibrosarcoma cells by regulating the activity of Hippo signaling, and this mechanism represents a potential therapeutic target for the treatment of lung metastatic fibrosarcoma.

Background/Aims: We evaluated the clinical effectiveness of irreversible electroporation (IRE) in combination with immunotherapy using allogenic natural killer cells (NK) for stage IV hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Methods: The study involved 40 patients with stage IV HCC who were divided equally into two groups: 1) simple IRE; and 2) IRE plus allogenic NK cells (IRE-NK); we mainly assessed the overall survival (OS). Results: The effect of the IRE-NK treatment was synergistic, i.e., not only did it enhance immune function, it also decreased alpha-fetoprotein expression and showed significantly good clinical effectiveness. At the median 7.6-month follow-up (range, 3.8–12.1 months), median OS was higher in the IRE-NK group (10.1 months) than in the IRE group (8.9 months, P = 0.0078). Conclusion: IRE combined with allogeneic NK cell immunotherapy significantly increases the median OS of patients with stage IV HCC.

Background/Aims: Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is often diagnosed at an advanced stage, resulting in extremely poor 5-year survival. Late diagnosis of PDAC is mainly due to lack of a reliable method of early detection. Carbohydrate antigen (CA) 19-9 is often used as a tumor biomarker in PDAC; however, the test lacks sensitivity and specificity. Therefore, new sensitive and minimally invasive diagnostic tools are required to detect pancreatic cancer. Methods: Here, we investigated circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) which contained KRAS-mutated as a potential diagnostic tool for PDAC patients who underwent irreversible electroporation (IRE). We used droplet digital polymerase chain reaction (ddPCR) to detect the expression of KRAS-mutated genes in plasma samples of 65 PDAC patients who underwent IRE. Results: In these 65 cases, ctDNA was detected in 20 (29.2%) samples. The median overall survival (OS) was 11.4 months with ctDNA+ patients and 14.3 months for ctDNA- patients. ctDNA+ patients had a obviously poorer prognosis associated to overall survival (P < 0.001). Conclusion: Our results suggested that the existence of ctDNA was a predictor of survival for PDAC patients. Therefore, ctDNA may be a new sensitive biomarker for monitoring treatment outcome in PDAC.

Abstract Background Cardiophrenic angle lymph node metastases are relatively rare. Surgical resection is the main treatment for cardiophrenic angle lymph node metastasis, but it is not always possible. Case presentation Here, we report our initial experience with cryoablation of a cardiophrenic angle lymph node metastasis from liver cancer. As the cardiophrenic angle lymph node metastasis was located close to the heart, about 200 mL of 0.9% saline was injected into the pericardium to separate the heart from the target area. The cardiophrenic angle lymph node metastasis was successfully ablated, without any complications. Conclusions Cryoablation may be a suitable alternative treatment for cardiophrenic angle lymph node metastasis.

Irreversible electroporation (IRE) was confirmed to control several solid tumors effectively in vivo. Our preclinical study aimed to assess the feasibility and safety of IRE in the breast of rabbit.Thirty New Zealand white rabbits were randomly divided into 3 groups of 10 rabbits (control group, IRE group A, and B). Two mono-electrode needles were inserted into the breast tissue by percutaneous puncture. Electrocardiogram and vital signs were monitored before, during, and after ablation. Histopathology, immunohistochemistry, and transmission electron microscopy were examined at 0 hours, 12 hours, 24 hours, 4 days, 7 days, 14 days, and 28 days after ablation.All the rabbits survived the procedure with no significant adverse effects. Intra-operative ventricular arrhythmias occurred in 1 rabbit from IRE group B and was immediately relieved after ablation. Reversible subcutaneous hemorrhage was observed in 8 rabbits from IRE group A and 7 rabbits from IRE group B. No skin was burnt, however, pectoralis major muscle injuries were found in all rabbits. Histopathological and ultrastructural examination revealed the coexistence of cell necrosis and apoptosis. HE, TUNEL, and Masson staining revealed breast tissue injury and the recovery of damage by fibrous tissue and granulation tissue. Notably, the structures of mammary gland lobules and interstitial components of the breasts were well preserved.Our study suggests that IRE destroys breast cancer while effectively preserving the skin, the structure of mammary gland lobules, and interstitial components. IRE may be a promising technique to locally control breast cancer and to maintain the esthetic of the breast.

Background and objective Lung cancer is one of the most commonly occurring malignancies and frequent causes of death in the world. Cryoablation is a safe and alternative treatment for unresectable lung cancer. Due to the lung being gas-containing organ and different from solid organs such as liver and pancreas, it is difficult to achieve the freezing range of beyond the tumor edge 1 cm safety border. The aim of this study is to examine the effect of different numbers of freeze cycles on the effectiveness of cryoablation on normal lung tissue and to create an operation guideline that gives the best effect. Methods Six healthy Tibetan miniature pigs were given a CT scan and histological investigation after percutaneous cryosurgery. Cryoablation was performed as 2 cycles of 10 min of active freezing in the left lung; each freeze followed by a 5 min thaw. In the right lung, we performed the same 2 cycles of 5 min of freezing followed by 5 min of thawing. However, for the right lung, we included a third cycle of consisting of 10 min of freezing followed by 5 min of thawing. Three cryoprobes were inserted into the left lung and three cryoprobes in the right lung per animal, one in the upper and two in the lower lobe, so as to be well away from each other. Comparison under the same experimental condition was necessary. During the experiment, observations were made regarding the imaging change of ice-ball. The lungs were removed postoperatively at 3 intervals: 4 h, 3 d of postoperation and 7 d of postoperation, respectively, to view microscopic and pathological change. Results The ice-ball grew gradually in relation to the increase in time, and the increase in number of cycles. The size of the cryolesion (hypothesis necrotic area) in specimens, over time, became larger in size than the size of the ice-ball during operation, regardless of whether 2 or 3 freeze-thaw cycles were performed. The area of necrosis was gradually increased over the course of time. The hypothesis necrotic area was equal to necrosis area 3 d after cryosurgery. Conclusion Percutaneous cryoablation of the lung can achieve complete ablation of target tissue. The freezing technique may be different depending on the individual circumstances of each tumor. In technology, 3 freeze-thaw cycles are recommended, and the range of cryoablation’s effective diameter may be not necessarily beyond the tumor edge at least 1 cm safe border during cryosurgery.

Background and objective As many lung cancer patients lose surgical possibility, it is important to explore new treatments to improve prognosis. The study is to observe adverse reactions and therapeutic effects of cryosurgery combined iodine-125 seeds implantation in treating advanced lung cancer patients. Methods One hundredforty unresectable pulmonary cancer patients received percutaneous cryosurgery and iodine-125 implantation under CT guidance. Patients were followed-up 1 year, with CT scan, therapeutic effect, complications and survival time monitoriy. Results The one hundred forty patients successfully received cryosurgery combined with iodine-125 seed implantation and one-year follow-up. The patients with 6 m posttreatment had complete remission (CR) of 93.4%, partial remission(PR) of 70.1%, stable disease (SD) of 7.4%, and progressive disease (PD) of 5.7%. The half-year and one-year survival rates were 94.3% and 65.7% respectively. The average KPS was improved from 66.9 to 76.3. Conclusion Cryosurgery combined with iodine-125 seed implantation is effective in treating unresectable lung cancer, providing a promising treatment protocol for unresectable lung cancer patients.

Irreversible electroporation (IRE) is a method of targeted cell ablation which has been suggested as a potential cancer therapy as it leaves structures such as blood vessels and the extracellular matrix intact, thereby allowing the rapid recovery of healthy tissue. Here, we investigated the effects of IRE on the colon in vivo in a porcine model.IRE ablation was performed on the colon walls of 12 female Tibet mini-pigs, creating a total of 24 lesions. Lesions were monitored periodically by endoscopy. The pigs were euthanized 7, 14, 21 or 28 days after IRE ablation and the colons harvested for gross and histological analysis. Sections were stained with hematoxylin and eosin (H&E), Masson's trichrome (MT) stain and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) assay.All pigs tolerated the ablation procedure without serious clinical symptoms or complications. There was no evidence of perforation by endoscopy or gross postmortem examination. All lesions were characterized by necrotic cell death with mild inflammation and hyperemia, with a sharp demarcation between ablated and adjacent normal tissue. A fibrous scar was observed in the ablated colon tissue. Histological analysis revealed damage to each layer of the colon. Histopathology findings also showed the preservation of extracellular structures and the recovery of the ablated colon.The complete ablation of the target area, its rapid recovery and the lack of posttreatment symptoms suggest that IRE ablation may be a promising therapy for tumors located adjacent to or violating the colon wall.

Background and objective Most lung cancer patients present an advanced stage at diagnosis without suitable surgical chances. Cryotherapy has been applied to the advanced lung cancer with safety and effectiveness. The aim of this study is to analyze the most common complications that occur after percutaneous cryoablation when applied to advanced lung cancer. Methods Total 644 lung cancer patients had been treated with percutaneous cryoablation guided by ultrasound and/or CT scan. The cardivascular and respiratory complications were monitored. Results Complications were relatively minor and could be controlled with routine methods. Serious complications included cardiac arrest and hemopneumothorax, and thus preventative steps should be taken. Conclusion Percutaneous cryoablation for lung cancer is a simple, effective and relatively safe method, but attention should be paid to the possible complications during cryoablation.

In the present study, we aimed to compare the clinical outcome of autogeneic and allogeneic natural killer (NK) cells immunotherapy for the treatment of recurrent breast cancer. Between July 2016 and February 2017, 36 patients who met the enrollment criteria were randomly assigned to two groups: autogeneic NK cells immunotherapy group (group I, n=18) and allogeneic NK cells immunotherapy group (group II, n=18). The clinical efficacy, quality of life, immune function, circulating tumor cell (CTC) level, and other related indicators were evaluated. We found that allogeneic NK cells immunotherapy has better clinical efficacy than autogeneic therapy. Moreover, allogeneic NK cells therapy improves the quality of life, reduces the number of CTCs, reduces carcinoembryonic antigen and cancer antigen 15-3 (CA15-3) expression, and significantly enhances immune function. To our knowledge, this is the first clinical trial to compare the clinical outcome of autogeneic and allogeneic NK cells immunotherapy for recurrent breast cancer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of irreversible electroporation (IRE) on the stomach wall following the direct application of IRE onto the organ surface. IRE ablation was performed in 8 Tibetan mini-pigs, which were randomly assigned into two groups based on their ablated areas: Group A, gastric cardia, fundus of stomach, gastric body and group B, lesser gastric curvature, greater gastric curvature, stomach pylorus. Two IRE needles were placed in the space between the stomach wall and the liver (not inserted into the stomach tissue), and three lesions were created in each pig. Serum aminotransferase and white blood cell (WBC) levels were measured. Gastroscopy and endoscopic ultrasonography were performed. From each group, 2 pigs were sacrificed on day 7 post-IRE; the remaining pigs were sacrificed on day 28 post-IRE. There were no signs of perforation on the stomach wall. Serum aminotransferase and WBC levels increased in both groups on day 1 post-IRE and decreased gradually thereafter. The gastroscopy procedure revealed oval ulcers on day 7 post-IRE and smaller ulcers on day 28 post-IRE. Transmural necrosis, inflammation and fibrosis were observed at 7 days post-IRE. Healing ulcers were observed at 28 days post-IRE. In conclusion, IRE ablation caused damage to the stomach wall; however, IRE did not induce any perforation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Many previous studies demonstrated that cell adhesion molecules CD44v6 and integrin-β1 had been extensively investigated as potential prognostic markers of various cancers. However, data in PC are scarce. Methods: We now investigate CD44v6 and integrin-β1 mRNA expression in PBMC by a triplex real-time RT-PCR assay and protein expression in plasma by ELISA. All specimens were collected from 54 PC patients who received the treatment of cryosurgery as well as 20 healthy individuals (control). Results: The mRNA and protein expression levels of CD44v6 and integrin-β1 in patients were significantly increased compared with control group (P<0.05). The high CD44v6 mRNA and protein expression were significantly correlated with clinical stage, tumor differentiation, LNM, liver metastasis and decreased median DFS (P<0.05), while the high integrin-β1 mRNA and protein expression were significantly correlated with clinical stage, LNM, liver metastasis and decreased median DFS (P<0.05). Clinical stage, LNM, liver metastasis, CD44v6 mRNA and protein expression were the independent predictors of survival in PC patients (P<0.05). Moreover, CD44v6 and integrin-β1 mRNA and protein expression levels were significantly decreased in patients in 3 months after cryosurgery (P<0.05). No significant difference was found in CD44v6 mRNA and protein expression between patients in 3 months after cryosurgery and control group (P>0.05). Conclusion: CD44v6 and integrin-β1 mRNA and protein expression in blood may serve as biomarkers for the development and metastasis of PC, and as prognostic indicators for PC. They may become useful predictors in assessing outcome of PC patients after cryosurgery. BACKGROUNDThe anti-programmed cell death 1 (anti-PD-1) antibody pembrolizumab is clinically active against non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). In addition to T cells, human natural killer (NK) cells, reported to have the potential to prolong the survival of patients with advanced NSCLC, also express PD-1. This study aimed to investigate the safety and efficacy of pembrolizumab plus allogeneic NK cells in patients with previously treated advanced NSCLC.METHODSIn total, 109 enrolled patients with a programmed death ligand 1 (PD-L1) tumor proportion score (TPS) of 1% or higher were randomly allocated to group A (n = 55 patients given pembrolizumab plus NK cells) or group B (n = 54 patients given pembrolizumab alone). The patients received i.v. pembrolizumab (10 mg/kg) once every 3 weeks and continued treatment until the occurrence of tumor progression or unacceptable toxicity. The patients in group A continuously received 2 cycles of NK cell therapy as 1 course of treatment.RESULTSIn our study, patients in group A had longer survival than did patients in group B (median overall survival [OS]: 15.5 months vs. 13.3 months; median progression-free survival [PFS]: 6.5 months vs. 4.3 months; P < 0.05). In group A patients with a TPS of 50% or higher, the median OS and PFS was significantly longer. Pain caused by liver tumors can be alleviated by cryoablation, but little is known about the analgesic effects and duration of pain alleviation. We retrospectively reviewed the changes in the severity of pain before and after percutaneous cryoablation of hepatic tumors. Each patient enrolled in this study had a single hepatic tumor; patients with large tumors (major diameter, P5 cm) underwent transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) first and then cryoablation. Severe abdominal pain that was not controlled with long-lasting oral analgesics was treated with opioid injections. In all 73 study patients, severe abdominal pain was gradually eased 5 days after cryosurgery, completely disappeared after 15 days and did not recur for more than 8 weeks. There were no differences in analgesic effects between patients with hepatocellular carcinomas and those with liver metastasis (P > 0.05). The patients were divided into four groups depending on their pain outcomes: (i) immediate relief (n = 6), severe abdominalgia was no longer present after cryosurgery; (ii) delayed relief (n = 11), severe abdominalgia disappeared gradually within 15 days after the cryosurgery; (iii) always pain-free (n = 39), severe abdominalgia was not present before or after treatment; and (iv) new pain (n = 17), abdominalgia developed after treatment and disappeared within 15 days. In summary, percutaneous cryoablation of hepatic tumors caused short-term pain in some patients, but this pain disappeared within 15 days. Moreover, the pain-relieving effect of this treatment was sustained for at least 8 weeks, without severe side effects.

Esophageal cancer is common in China. There is a lack of treatment strategies for metastatic esophageal cancer (MEC) after radical surgery on the primary tumor. Cryoablation is an attractive option because tumor necrosis can be safely induced in a minimally invasive manner. This study assessed its therapeutic effect in MEC after failure of radical surgery. One hundred and forty patients met the inclusion criteria from May, 2003 to March, 2011. Comprehensive cryotherapy of multiple metastases was performed on 105 patients; 35 received chemotherapy. No severe complications occurred during or after cryoablation. Overall survival (OS) was assessed according to therapeutic protocol, pathologic type, treatment timing and number of procedures. The OS of patients who received comprehensive cryoablation (44 ± 20 months) was significantly longer than that of those who underwent chemotherapy (23 ± 24 months; P = 0.0006). In the cryotherapy group, the OS for squamous cell carcinoma (45 ± 19 months) was longer than that for adenocarcinoma (33 ± 18 months; P = 0.0435); the OS for timely cryoablation (46 ± 19 months) was longer than that for delayed cryoablation (33 ± 20 months; P = 0.0193); the OS for multiple cryoablation (50 ± 17 months) was longer than that for single cryoablation (37 ± 20 months; P = 0.0172); and the OS for cryo-immunotherapy (56 ± 17 months) was longer than that for cryoablation alone (39 ± 19 months; P = 0.0011). Thus, comprehensive cryotherapy may have advantages over chemotherapy in the treatment of MEC and, in patients with squamous cell carcinoma, supplementary immunotherapy and timely and multiple cryoablation may be associated with a better prognosis.
