We report the physical properties of Eu-doped bulk TmFeO3 through X-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility (χ), Raman scattering and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) study, which shows a similar orthorhombic structure with the Pbnm space group as TmFeO3. Magnetic measurement on Eu-doped TmFeO3 provides evidence for spin reorientations of Fe3+. Further, the Raman spectra of Eu3+ doped TmFeO3 show significant changes in Raman modes as a function of temperature, which are evidence for strong spin–lattice interaction. From the XAS spectra, the L-edge of Fe provides information on the valence state of Fe, whereas the K-edge of oxygen shows that the compound has a strong influence on the hybridization of the O(2p) state with the 3d states of Fe. SmxPr1-xFeO3 (x = 0, 0.4, 0.7, 0.9, 1.0) all-in-one single crystal rod with quasi-continuous composition distribution was successfully grown by a hetero-seed and hetero-feed optical floating zone technique in flowing air. The lattice mismatch between each adjacent composition is very small, leading to the high-quality continuous growth of SmxPr1-xFeO3 single crystal rod. X-ray back-reflection Laue photographs indicate that all single crystals at different positions along the growth direction have good crystallization quality and the same crystallographic axis. The composition change of the quasi-continuous single crystals along growth direction was analyzed by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), which shows that the composition varies continuously and smoothly near the different composition boundaries. At a distance relatively far away from the boundary, the composition remains constant. Finally, we measured the anisotropic magnetic properties of these single crystals when x = 0.7. Our study shows that the hetero-seed and hetero-feed optical floating zone technique has a great potential for high-throughput growth of crystalline materials, and could serve as an effective method to collect single crystal material properties in materials database research. Strongly correlated electron systems are an excellent platform for functional materials. Here, we present a strong magnetic effect in the Eu3+-doped TmFeO 3 single crystal, where half of the Tm3+ sites are replaced by Eu3+ dopants in the orthorhombic lattice of TmFeO 3 (Tm 0.5 Eu 0.5 FeO 3). We demonstrated by combining the dc -magnetic susceptibility χ(T) as well as magnetization isotherm M (H), that the temperature dependent magnetization results under tiny change in magnetic field (H) shows the evidence for the formation of such remarkable effects due to Tm3+ substituted with Eu3+ ion in TmFeO 3. Interestingly, Eu3+ doping protects the antiferromagnetic (AFM) spin-reorientation transition along crystallographic c -axis as observed by a sharp transition at T SR = 90 K, similar as parent TmFeO 3. Further, an external applied field (H) of 500 Oe is enough to fully suppress the spin-reorientation transition in Eu3+ doped TmFeO 3. We emphasize that the transition from almost free-state of Tm3+ spin to AFM state changes by 90 K at such low magnetic field. Experimentally observe significant changes in terms of shift in the magnetic transition (SRT) under an applied very low magnetic field due to Eu3+ doping in TmFeO 3 lattice is truly robust effect. The spin switching and exchange bias effect were investigated in the rare earth orthoferrite SmFeO 3 composed of two antiferromagnetically coupled sublattices Sm 3+ and Fe 3+ with canted ferromagnetic moments and a temperature induced spin switching in single crystal SmFeO 3 was observed. The spin switching temperature was found to be modulated by exerting different magnetic fields below the compensation temperature ([Formula: see text]). This effect could be explained as the changes of energy barrier related to the magnetization direction under different magnetic fields. In the meantime, the coercivity displayed strong dependence on the maximum applied magnetic fields in the hysteresis measurement. In addition, spontaneous exchange bias effect (EB) was observed with the largest EB field value of 1.2 T, and the EB field changed its sign across the compensation point. Our results indicate that the magnetic properties of SmFeO 3 can be strongly affected and controlled by the temperature or the applied magnetic field during the measurement process, and it might lead to novel applications in magneto-optics, ultrafast switching, and magnetic sensing devices.
