Abstract

In forest soils along vertical profiles located in different parts of the Alps, concentrations of persistent organic pollutants (POPs), namely organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) like dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethanes (DDTs), hexachlorobenzene (HCB), hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCH), heptachlor, aldrin, dieldrin and mirex, were measured. Though local characteristics of the sites are influenced by numerous factors like orographic and meteorological parameters, forest stand characteristics and humus parameters, we ascertained a marked vertical increase of concentrations of some organochlorine compounds in the soil. On the basis of climatological values of each site, we found that the contamination increase with altitude can be ascribed to a certain ‘cold condensation effect’. In addition, the perennial atmospheric deposition of POPs is controlled by precipitation. Other key parameters explaining the accumulation of POPs are the soil organic carbon stocks, the turnover times, the re-volatilisation and degradation processes, which vary with altitude. Abstract

Atmospheric sampling of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) was conducted using Semi Permeable Membrane Devices (SPMDs) deployed in the Alps at different altitudinal transects for two consecutive exposure periods of half a year and a third simultaneous year-long period. Along all the altitude profiles, the sequestered amounts of OCPs increased in general with altitude. SPMDs were still working as kinetic samplers after half a year for the majority of the OCPs. However, compounds with the lowest octanol-air partition coefficient (Koa), reached equilibrium within six months. This change in the SPMD uptake was determined for the temperature gradient along the altitude profile influencing Koa, OCPs availability in the gaseous phase, and SPMD performance. In sum, it seems two effects are working in parallel along the altitude profiles: the change in SPMD performance and the different availability of OCPs along the altitudinal transects determined by their compound properties and concentrations in air. Abstract

The project MONARPOP analysed the concentrations of semivolatile organic compounds (SVOCs) in two important sink compartments, needles of Norway spruce (Picea abies [L.] Karst.) and forest soil from 40 remote Alpine forest sites in Austria, Germany, Italy, Slovenia and Switzerland. In the present study the load of PCDD/F, PCB, PBDE, PAH, HCB, HCH and DDT in the Alps calculated on the basis of measured data are compared with their estimated emissions in the Alpine region. It comes out that the masses of the studied pollutants stored in the forests are higher than the corresponding emissions in the Alpine area indicating that the Alps are a sink for POPs advected from surrounding areas. It is assumed that local emissions of PCDD/F and PAH deriving from biomass burning are probably underestimated and that the pool of these pollutants in the forests represents the accumulation over some decades. Abstract

The mineralization of the herbicide 3-(4-isopropylphenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea (isoproturon) was reduced after the dry and hot summer 2003 in a soil profile placed in a field lysimeter. A different isoproturon mineralization pattern remained in soil material taken at two different soil depths (0–5 cm and 15–20 cm), although soil material was re-equilibrated at adequate climatic conditions. Special soil microcosms were designed to determine if the changes in this special soil function ‘isoproturon mineralization’ were related to the climatic scenario of summer 2003. These microcosms were filled with lysimeter soil from the 15–20 cm depth and the temperature and dryness of summer 2003 were simulated. Afterwards, soil samples were taken from the microcosms and re-equilibrated under controlled conditions for 4 weeks. Subsequently, isoproturon mineralization was investigated. The soil microbial community reduced drastically its original capability of isoproturon mineralization in the course of the model experiments. Analysis of 16S-rRNA by denaturing gel gradient electrophoresis (DGGE) revealed substantial differences in the band patterns of the bacterial communities from both depths of the field lysimeter soil and from the soil incubated in microcosms. The different soil microbial biomass determined by microcalorimetry reinforced these results. In conclusion, the factors higher temperature and smaller soil moisture content generated important and enduring changes in the microbial community structure and therefore in specific soil functions of the community, as shown here by the function of isoproturon degradation. Abstract

Objective: This study was undertaken to compare the cerebral oxygenation measured by an experimental phase-modulated near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy system with capillary saturation estimated from jugular venous oxygen saturation.Methods: Jugular venous catheters were placed in 30 patients undergoing carotid endarterectomy and 194 measurements of venous oxygen saturation were obtained intra operatively. Simultaneous measurement of optical path length at 754, 785, and 816 nm was performed using a phase-modulated near-infrared spectroscopy system. Optical calibration was performed using both an optical bench and a scattering mold. Hemoglobin saturation was calculated from NIR measurements using equations derived from diffusion theory. Capillary saturation was calculated from the arterial and venous saturations.Results: Jugular venous saturations ranged from 41 to 92%. When calibrated using the optical bench, the NIR estimates of hemoglobin saturation deviated from estimated capillary values by an average of 2.6% bias and 4.3% deviation. No systematic bias was noted. NIR values derived from mold calibration were less accurate and precise (4.6% bias and 6.9% deviation.) Use of the initial venous sample as an in vivo calibration improved the accuracy of the mold calibration but did not alter the performance of the bench calibration.Conclusions: Under the conditions tested, an experimental phase-modulated near-infrared spectroscopy system calibrated using an optical bench agreed with capillary saturation estimated from jugular venous samples. Further work is necessary to demonstrate valid performance of the system under other conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Observations in a small population suggest that the Stycar system for vision testing is especially applicable to the evaluating of retarded and other handicapped children functioning at a young age level. Our experience suggests most children with mental ages above three years can be tested with this approach, despite their limitations of short attention span, distractibility, visual perceptual immaturity, and behavior problems. When adjustment is made for the children's mental ages, these difficulties seem minimized and success is probably equivalent to that of other studies of preschool children. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

41. CASED: A simulation package designed for variable speed drives.

Abstract

In recent years there has been an increase in the types and usage of AC variable speed drives. However, as the complexity of these systems has increased, so has the occurrence of problems which are often caused by the interaction of the various drive components. The authors have developed CASED which allows users to simulate complete drive systems. An overview is given of the types of models used for the converter and the motor, from which it is seen that three special features are required. Firstly the models are modular in nature, hence the simulator must be able to link the various models. Secondly a combination of discrete and continuous time simulation is required to model the converters, and lastly there may occasionally be a need for specialised stiff differential equation (DE) solvers. It is shown that by choosing the correct DE solver the simulation time can be decreased by more than one hundred fold. CASED has shown itself to be a specialised and powerful tool in variable speed drive analysis. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
