VFA and BFM measurements were obtained using three standing 8-electrode BIA devices, InBody230, InBody770, and IOI353. These acquired VFA and BFM were expressed as VFAIOI353, VFAInBody230, VFAInBody770 V, BFMIOI353, BFMInBody230, and BFMInBody770, respectively. As reference measurement, the VFA acquired from computer tomography (CT) was expressed as VFACT, and the BFM measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) was denoted as BFMDXA.Results: The coefficient of determination (r2) in regression analysis between the measurements by VFAIOI353, VFAInBody230, VFAInBody770 and VFACT were 0.425, 0.492, and 0.473, respectively. Also, the limits of agreement (LOA) obtained from Bland–Altman analysis were − 25.18 to 56.62, − 29.74 to 62.44, and − 32.96 to 71.93 cm2. For BFM, r2 in regression analysis between the measurements by BFMIOI353, BFMInBody230, BFMInBody770 and BMFDXA were 0.894, 0.950, and 0.955, respectively; LOA were − 7.21 to 5.75, − 4.70 to 4.05, and − 5.48 to 3.05 kg, respectively.Conclusion: The results showed when assessing BFM, these instruments delivered comparable measurements, and the degree of agreement ranged from excellent to moderate compared with the reference method. However, when assessing VFA, the agreements were weak. Strategies in elevating autophagy to disintegrate the insoluble aggregates without injuring cells have become a major goal for therapy. In this work, a triazole derivative, OC-13, was found accelerating autophagic clearance of polyQ aggregation in human neuroblastoma cells following induction of the enhanced green fluorescence-conjugated chimeric protein that enclosed 79 polyQ repeats (Q79-EGFP). OC-13 accelerated autophagy development and removed nuclear Q79-EGFP aggregates. The increase of Beclin-1, turnover of LC3-I to LC3-II and degradation of p62 supported autophagy activation. Pretreatment of autophagy inhibitor, bafilomycin A1, not only suppressed autophagolysome fusion, but also impeded aggregate eradication. The study also showed that c-Jun N-terminal kinase/Beclin-1 pathway was activated during OC-13 treatment and c-Jun N-terminal kinase inhibitor impaired autophagy and final breakdown. Autophagic clearance of the insoluble aggregates demonstrated the feasibility of OC-13 in alleviating neuronal disorders because of expanded glutamine stretches. Even when entirely unloaded, biological structures are not stress-free, as shown by Y.C. Fung׳s seminal opening angle experiment on arteries and the left ventricle. As a result of this prestrain, subject-specific geometries extracted from medical imaging do not represent an unloaded reference configuration necessary for mechanical analysis, even if the structure is externally unloaded. Here we propose a new computational method to create physiological residual stress fields in subject-specific left ventricular geometries using the continuum theory of fictitious configurations combined with a fixed-point iteration. We also reproduced the opening angle experiment on four swine models, to characterize the range of normal opening angle values. The proposed method generates residual stress fields which can reliably reproduce the range of opening angles between 8.7±1.8 and 16.6±13.7 as measured experimentally. We demonstrate that including the effects of prestrain reduces the left ventricular stiffness by up to 40%, thus facilitating the ventricular filling, which has a significant impact on cardiac function. This method can improve the fidelity of subject-specific models to improve our understanding of cardiac diseases and to optimize treatment options.

Ventricular growth is widely considered to be an important feature in the adverse progression of heart diseases, whereas reverse ventricular growth (or reverse remodeling) is often considered to be a favorable response to clinical intervention. In recent years, a number of theoretical models have been proposed to model the process of ventricular growth while little has been done to model its reverse. Based on the framework of volumetric strain-driven finite growth with a homeostatic equilibrium range for the elastic myofiber stretch, we propose here a reversible growth model capable of describing both ventricular growth and its reversal. We used this model to construct a semi-analytical solution based on an idealized cylindrical tube model, as well as numerical solutions based on a truncated ellipsoidal model and a human left ventricular model that was reconstructed from magnetic resonance images. We show that our model is able to predict key features in the end-diastolic pressure-volume relationship that were observed experimentally and clinically during ventricular growth and reverse growth. We also show that the residual stress fields generated as a result of differential growth in the cylindrical tube model are similar to those in other nonidentical models utilizing the same geometry.

Fingerprint is one of the most common evidence found at a crime scene. Owing to the uniqueness of fingerprint, it is useful for suspect identification. Typically, the questioned fingerprint is of limited contribution due to blurriness of the minutia or absence of potential suspect. However, it is still useful if the ethnicity or sex of the questioned fingerprint could be inferred to narrow down the scope of searching of suspect. Therefore, this study aims to examine sexual and ethnic differences in fingerprint patterns among the three major ethnic groups in Malaysia, i.e. Malays, Chinese and Indians. In total, 2000 plain fingerprints were collected from all the ten fingers of 200 Malaysians (i.e. 99 males and 101 females). Each of the three ethnic groups was represented by at least 60 subjects. Descriptive statistics and hypothesis test were performed to assess the sexual and ethnic variability of fingerprint patterns. In addition, simple correspondence analysis was also conducted to support the descriptive and inferential statistics. By considering fingerprint patterns in all the ten fingers, loop was the most frequent pattern in Malays (23.0%) and Indians (23.2%), while Chinese (13.9%) showed slightly higher frequency of whorl than Malays (9.6%) and Indians (10.3%). The relative distribution of fingerprint patterns of male was similar to that of female. In conclusion, fingerprint patterns could be used to infer the ethnicity rather than the sex of a suspect in the Malaysian context. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: We investigated the prevalence and predictors of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in patients admitted to the hospital for acute myocardial infarction and whether OSA has any association with microvascular perfusion after primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).Methods: Recruited patients were scheduled to undergo an overnight sleep study between 2 and 5 days after primary PCI. An apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) of > or = 15 was considered diagnostic of OSA. Impaired microvascular perfusion after primary PCI was defined as an ST-segment resolution of < or = 70%, myocardial blush grade 0 or 1, or a corrected Thrombolysis in Myocardial Infarction (TIMI) [antegrade flow scale] frame count > 28.Results: Sleep study was performed in 120 patients and completed in 105 patients (study cohort, mean age 53 +/- 10 years, male 98%) with uncomplicated myocardial infarction. An AHI was > or = 15 in 69 patients (OSA-positive), giving a prevalence of 65.7%. Diabetes mellitus was found to be a significant risk factor for OSA (odds ratio, 2.86; 95% confidence interval, 1.06 to 8.24; p = 0.033). There were no differences between OSA-positive and OSA-negative groups with regard to the percentage of patients with < or = 70% ST-segment resolution (73% vs 64%, respectively; p = 0.411), myocardial blush grade 0 or 1 (39.1% vs 38.9%, respectively; p = 1.000), or corrected TIMI frame count > 28 (21.7% vs 25.0%, respectively; p = 0.807).Conclusions: We found a high prevalence of previously undiagnosed OSA in patients admitted with acute myocardial infarction. Diabetes mellitus was independently associated with OSA. No evidence indicated that OSA is associated with impaired microvascular perfusion after primary PCI. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pediatric oncology patients are at risk for developing a headache after they undergo a lumbar puncture for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes. These headaches are likely due to leakage of cerebrospinal fluid at the puncture site. While usually mild and self-limited, some headaches may be persistent and severe, adding to the distress of these young patients. In the past 10 years, refinements in lumbar needle size and shape as well as procedural techniques have reduced the tissue trauma that predisposes patients to headache. A number of interventions, such as bed rest, hydration, caffeine administration, and epidural blood patching, have been suggested to prevent and relieve the headaches that follow lumbar punctures. This article outlines the pathophysiology and incidence of headaches related to lumbar punctures in the pediatric oncology setting and reviews the evidence from research trials to suggest which interventions clinicians should adopt into their practice to minimize this complication of lumbar punctures. Background: A 57% increase in the U.S. prevalence of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) for 8-year-old children born in 1994 versus 1998 was recently reported.Methods: To quantify the possible contributions of given risk/predictive factors on the recent ASD prevalence increase, we formulated a mathematical model based on the baseline risk factor prevalence (RFP), the proportionate change in RFP (cRFP), and the magnitude of the association between the risk factor and ASD [estimated relative risk (RR)]. We applied this model to several pregnancy-related factors (preterm, very preterm, low and very low birth weight, multiple birth, cesarean delivery, breech presentation, and assisted reproductive technology use). RFP and cRFP estimates for each factor were obtained from U.S. population-based surveillance datasets. Estimated RRs were obtained from a series of systematic literature reviews.Results: We estimate that each risk factor examined, alone or in various combinations, accounted for a very small proportion (<1%) of the ASD increase. Additionally, hypothetical scenarios indicate RFP, cRFP, and RR all need to be sizable for a risk factor to appreciably influence ASD prevalence.Conclusions: Thus, although various pregnancy factors have been found to be associated with ASDs, the contribution of many of these factors to the recently observed ASD increase is likely minimal. Background and Objective: Oxygen transport in the heart is crucial, and its impairment can lead to pathological conditions such as hypoxia, ischemia, and heart failure. However, investigating oxygen transport in the heart using in vivo measurements is difficult due to the small size of the coronary capillaries and their deep embedding within the heart wall., Methods: In this study, we developed a novel computational modeling framework that integrates a 0-D hemodynamic model with a 1-D mass transport model to simulate oxygen transport in/across the coronary capillary network., Results: The model predictions agree with analytical solutions and experimental measurements. The framework is used to simulate the effects of pulsatile vs. non-pulsatile behavior of the capillary hemodynamics on oxygen-related metrics such as the myocardial oxygen consumption (MVO 2 ) and oxygen extraction ratio (OER). Compared to simulations that consider (physiological) pulsatile behaviors of the capillary hemodynamics, the OER is underestimated by less than 9% and the MVO 2 is overestimated by less than 5% when the pulsatile behaviors are ignored in the simulations. Physics-based computer models based on numerical solutions of the governing equations generally cannot make rapid predictions, which in turn limits their applications in the clinic. To address this issue, we developed a physics-informed neural network (PINN) model that encodes the physics of a closed-loop blood circulation system embedding a left ventricle (LV). The PINN model is trained to satisfy a system of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) associated with a lumped parameter description of the circulatory system. The model predictions have a maximum error of less than 5% when compared to those obtained by solving the ODEs numerically. An inverse modeling approach using the PINN model is also developed to rapidly estimate model parameters (in ∼ 3 min) from single-beat LV pressure and volume waveforms. Using synthetic LV pressure and volume waveforms generated by the PINN model with different model parameter values, we show that the inverse modeling approach can recover the corresponding ground truth values for LV contractility indexed by the end-systolic elastance E es with a 1% error, which suggests that this parameter is unique. The estimated E es is about 58% to 284% higher for the data associated with dobutamine compared to those without, which implies that this approach can be used to estimate LV contractility using single-beat measurements. The organization of myofibers and extra cellular matrix within the myocardium plays a significant role in defining cardiac function. When pathological events occur, such as myocardial infarction (MI), this organization can become disrupted, leading to degraded pumping performance. The current study proposes a multiscale finite element (FE) framework to determine realistic fiber distributions in the left ventricle (LV). This is achieved by implementing a stress-based fiber reorientation law, which seeks to align the fibers with local traction vectors, such that contractile force and load bearing capabilities are maximized. By utilizing the total stress (passive and active), both myofibers and collagen fibers are reoriented. Simulations are conducted to predict the baseline fiber configuration in a normal LV as well as the adverse fiber reorientation that occurs due to different size MIs. The baseline model successfully captures the transmural variation of helical fiber angles within the LV wall, as well as the transverse fiber angle variation from base to apex. In the models of MI, the patterns of fiber reorientation in the infarct, border zone, and remote regions closely align with previous experimental findings, with a significant increase in fibers oriented in a left-handed helical configuration and increased dispersion in the infarct region. Furthermore, the severity of fiber reorientation and impairment of pumping performance both showed a correlation with the size of the infarct. The proposed multiscale modeling framework allows for the effective prediction of adverse remodeling and offers the potential for assessing the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions in the future. Despite the advent of various medical interventions for cancer treatment, the disease continues to pose a formidable global health challenge, necessitating the development of new therapeutic approaches for more effective treatment outcomes. Photodynamic therapy (PDT), which utilizes light to activate a photosensitizer to produce cytotoxic reactive oxygen species (ROS) for eradicating cancer cells, has emerged as a promising approach for cancer treatment due to its high spatiotemporal precision and minimal invasiveness. However, the widespread clinical use of PDT faces several challenges, including the inefficient production of ROS in the hypoxic tumor microenvironment, the limited penetration depth of light in biological tissues, and the inadequate accumulation of photosensitizers at the tumor site. Over the past decade, there has been increasing interest in the utilization of photofunctional transition metal complexes as photosensitizers for PDT applications due to their intriguing photophysical and photochemical properties. This review provides an overview of the current design strategies used in the development of transition metal complexes as innovative phototherapeutics, aiming to address the limitations associated with PDT and achieve more effective treatment outcomes. Promoting good health and ensuring responsible production and consumption are essential components of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) established by of the United Nations, as well as the goals of beautiful China. While the health impacts of air pollution have garnered significant attention, there remains a paucity of studies comparing the disparities in responsibility arising from production versus consumption. This paper integrates the Weather Research and Forecasting - Comprehensive Air Quality Model with Extensions (WRF-CAMx) model, the multiregional input‒output (MRIO) model, and the global exposure mortality model (GEMM) to assess the extent of PM 2.5 -related premature deaths caused by production and consumption activities in 30 Chinese provinces. The findings reveal a spatial mismatch in health burdens between production and consumption. Considering pollutant emissions and their transfer only through the supply chain leads to the finding that the net outflow of emissions from producers is mainly located in most of the northern provinces of China. However, when atmospheric transport and health impacts are included, the producing provinces are mainly located in central China, while the consuming provinces are located in the southeastern coastal and remote western and northern regions. Additionally, the long-range impact of consumption provinces with respect to the health burden is more than twice as large as that of production provinces, and its potential impact on the health burden cannot be ignored. From a sectoral perspective, production emissions from the non-electricity industry and services sectors contribute to 60% of the health burden, while their consumption emissions contribute to over 80% of the health burden. Furthermore, consumption activities in the non-electricity industry and services sectors significantly influence production emissions in the transport, agriculture, and electricity sectors. The geographical separation of consumption and production regions facilitated by trade is a critical yet often overlooked aspect in current regional air quality planning in China. People with hearing impairments often face increased risks related to traffic accidents due to their reduced ability to perceive surrounding sounds. Given the cost and usage limitations of traditional hearing aids and cochlear implants, this study aims to develop a sound alert assistance system (SAAS) to enhance situational awareness and improve travel safety for people with hearing impairments. We proposed the VAS-Compass Net (Vehicle Alert Sound-Compass Net), which integrates three lightweight convolutional neural networks: EfficientNet-lite0, MobileNetV3-Small, and GhostNet. Through employing a fuzzy ranking ensemble technique, our proposed model can identify different categories of vehicle alert sounds and directions of sound sources on an edge computing device. The experimental dataset consisted of images derived from the sounds of approaching police cars, ambulances, fire trucks, and car horns from various directions. The audio signals were converted into spectrogram images and Mel-frequency cepstral coefficient images, and they were fused into a complete image using image stitching techniques. We successfully deployed our proposed model on a Raspberry Pi 5 microcomputer, paired with a customized smartwatch to realize an SAAS. Our experimental results demonstrated that VAS-Compass Net achieved an accuracy of 84.38% based on server-based computing and an accuracy of 83.01% based on edge computing. Our proposed SAAS has the potential to significantly enhance the situational awareness, alertness, and safety of people with hearing impairments on the road.

The development of new and improved mitochondria-targeting photosensitisers (PSs) for photodynamic therapy (PDT) remains highly desirable, due to the critical role the mitochondria play in maintaining healthy cellular function. Here, we report the design, synthesis, photophysical properties and biological characterisation of a series of di-iodinated BODIPY-based PSs, BODIPY-Mito-I-n, for mitochondria-targeted PDT applications. Six BODIPY-Mito-I-n analogues were synthesised in good yields, with fast reaction times of between 30 and 60 min under mild conditions. The di-iodination of the BODIPY scaffold enabled highly efficient population of the triplet state, leading to high singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) photosensitisation efficiencies ( Φ Δ = 0.55-0.65). All BODIPY-Mito-I-n compounds exhibited very high photocytotoxic activity towards HeLa cells, with IC 50,light values of between 1.30 and 6.93 nM, due to photoinduced 1 O 2 generation. Notably, the poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)-modified BODIPY-Mito-I-6 showed remarkably lower dark cytotoxicity (IC 50,dark = 6.68-7.25 μM) than the non-PEGylated analogues BODIPY-Mito-I-1 to BODIPY-Mito-I-5 (IC 50,dark = 0.58-1.09 μM), resulting in photocytotoxicity indices up to 2120. Mechanistic studies revealed that BODIPY-Mito-I-6 induced reactive oxygen species overproduction and mitochondrial dysfunction in cells upon irradiation, leading to significant cell death through a combination of apoptosis and necrosis. It is anticipated that our design will contribute to the development of more effective mitochondria-targeting PSs for cancer therapy.

Cross-linking strategies have found wide applications in chemical biology, enabling the labeling of biomolecules and monitoring of protein-protein interactions. Nitrone exhibits remarkable versatility and applicability in bioorthogonal labeling due to its high reactivity with strained alkynes via the strain-promoted alkyne-nitrone cycloaddition (SPANC) reaction. In this work, four cyclometalated iridium(III) polypyridine complexes functionalized with two nitrone units were designed as novel phosphorogenic bioorthogonal reagents for bioimaging and phototherapeutics. The complexes showed efficient emission quenching, which is attributed to an efficient nonradiative decay pathway via the low-lying T 1 /S 0 minimum energy crossing point (MECP), as revealed by computational studies. However, the complexes displayed significant emission enhancement and lifetime extension upon reaction with (1 R ,8 S ,9 s )-bicyclo[6.1.0]non-4-yne (BCN) derivatives. In particular, they showed a remarkably higher reaction rate toward a bis -cyclooctyne derivative ( bis -BCN) compared with its monomeric counterpart ( mono -BCN). Live-cell imaging and (photo)cytotoxicity studies revealed higher photocytotoxicity in bis -BCN-pretreated cells, which is ascribed to the enhanced singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) photosensitization resulting from the elimination of the nitrone-associated quenching pathway. Importantly, the cross-linking properties and enhanced reactivity of the complexes make them highly promising candidates for the development of hydrogels and stapled/cyclized peptides, offering intriguing photophysical, photochemical, and biological properties. Notably, a nanosized hydrogel ( 2-gel ) demonstrated potential as a drug delivery system, while a stapled peptide ( 2- bis -pDIKK ) exhibited p53-Mdm2 inhibitory activity related to apoptosis and a cyclized peptide ( 2- bis -RGD ) showed cancer selectivity.

Introduction: Primary dysmenorrhea (PDM), characterized by cyclic pain, may involve pain modulation within the reward system (RS). The Catechol-O-methyltransferase ( COMT ) Val158Met polymorphism, which significantly influences dopamine activity, is linked to the regulation of both acute and chronic pain. This study examines the differential neurodynamic modulation in the RS associated with COMT Val158Met polymorphisms during menstrual pain among PDM subjects., Method: Ninety-one PDM subjects underwent resting-state fMRI during menstruation and were genotyped for COMT Val158Met polymorphisms. The amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF) and functional connectivity (FC) analyses were used to assess the RS response. Psychological evaluations included the McGill Pain Questionnaire, Pain Catastrophizing Scale, Beck Anxiety Inventory, and Beck Depression Inventory., Result: Val/Val homozygotes ( n = 50) and Met carriers ( n = 41) showed no significant differences in McGill Pain Questionnaire, Beck Anxiety Inventory, and Beck Depression Inventory. However, Met carriers exhibited lower scores on the Pain Catastrophizing Scale. Distinct FC patterns was observed between Val/Val homozygotes and Met carriers, specifically between the nucleus accumbens (NAc) and prefrontal cortex, NAc and inferior parietal lobe, ventral tegmental area (VTA) and prefrontal cortex, VTA and precentral gyrus, and VTA and superior parietal lobe. Only Met carriers showed significant correlations between ALFF and FC values of the NAc and VTA with pain-related metrics (McGill Pain Questionnaire and Pain Catastrophizing Scale scores). NAc ALFF and NAc-prefrontal cortex FC values positively correlated with pain-related metrics, while VTA ALFF and VTA-prefrontal cortex and VTA-superior parietal lobe FC values negatively correlated with pain-related metrics., Discussion: This study reveals that the COMT Val158Met polymorphism results in genotype-specific functional changes in the brain's RS during menstrual pain. In Met carriers, engagement of these regions is potentially linked to motivational reward-seeking and top-down modulation. Background: The emerging fungal pathogen Candida auris poses a serious threat to global public health due to its worldwide distribution, multidrug resistance, high transmissibility, propensity to cause outbreaks, and high mortality. We aimed to characterise three unusual C auris isolates detected in Singapore, and to determine whether they constitute a novel clade distinct from all previously known C auris clades (I-V)., Methods: In this genotypic and phenotypic study, we characterised three C auris clinical isolates, which were cultured from epidemiologically unlinked inpatients at a large tertiary hospital in Singapore. The index isolate was detected in April, 2023. We performed whole-genome sequencing (WGS) and obtained hybrid assemblies of these C auris isolates. The complete genomes were compared with representative genomes of all known C auris clades. To provide a global context, 3651 international WGS data from the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) database were included in a high-resolution single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) analysis. Antifungal susceptibility testing was done and antifungal resistance genes, mating-type locus, and chromosomal rearrangements were characterised from the WGS data of the three investigated isolates. We further implemented Bayesian logistic regression models to classify isolates into known clades and simulate the automatic detection of isolates belonging to novel clades as their WGS data became available., Findings: The three investigated isolates were separated by at least 37 000 SNPs (range 37 000-236 900) from all existing C auris clades. These isolates had opposite mating-type allele and different chromosomal rearrangements when compared with their closest clade IV relatives. The isolates were susceptible to all tested antifungals. Therefore, we propose that these isolates represent a new clade of C auris, clade VI. Furthermore, an independent WGS dataset from Bangladesh, accessed via the NCBI Sequence Read Archive, was found to belong to this new clade. As a proof-of-concept, our Bayesian logistic regression model was able to flag these outlier genomes as a potential new clade., Interpretation: The discovery of a new C auris clade in Singapore and Bangladesh in the Indomalayan zone, showing a close relationship to clade IV members most commonly found in South America, highlights the unknown genetic diversity and origin of C auris, particularly in under-resourced regions. Background: We describe the investigations for control of two consecutive Serratia marcescens outbreaks in neonatology unit of Singapore General Hospital., Methods: Epidemiological investigations, environmental sampling and risk-factors analysis were performed to guide infection control measures. Active surveillance sampling of nasopharyngeal aspirate and/or stool from neonates was conducted during both outbreaks. Whole-genome-sequencing was done to determine clonal links. Retrospective case-control study was conducted for second outbreak to identify risk factors for S marcescens acquisition., Results: In 2022, two genetically unrelated S marcescens outbreaks were managed involving five neonates in March 2022 (outbreak 1) and eight neonates in November 2022 (outbreak 2). A link to positive isolates from sinks in intensive care units and milk preparation room was identified during outbreak 1. Neonatal jaundice (aOR, 16.46; p-value= 0.023) and non-formula milk feeding (aOR, 13.88; p-value= 0.02) were identified as risk factors during second outbreak. Multiple interventions adopted were cohorting of positive cases, carriage-screening, enhanced environmental cleaning, and emphasis on alcohol-based handrubs for hand-hygiene., Conclusion: The two outbreaks were likely due to infection prevention practices lapses and favourable environmental conditions. Recent clinical studies have reported that heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) can be divided into two phenotypes based on the range of ejection fraction (EF), namely HFpEF with higher EF and HFpEF with lower EF. These phenotypes exhibit distinct left ventricle (LV) remodelling patterns and dynamics. However, the influence of LV remodelling on various LV functional indices and the underlying mechanics for these two phenotypes are not well understood. To address these issues, this study employs a coupled finite element analysis (FEA) framework to analyse the impact of various ventricular remodelling patterns, specifically concentric remodelling (CR), concentric hypertrophy (CH), and eccentric hypertrophy (EH), with and without LV wall thickening on LV functional indices. Further, the geometries with a moderate level of remodelling from each pattern are subjected to fibre stiffening and contractile impairment to examine their effect in replicating the different features of HFpEF. The results show that with severe CR, LV could exhibit the characteristics of HFpEF with higher EF, as observed in recent clinical studies. Controlled fibre stiffening can simultaneously increase the end-diastolic pressure (EDP) and reduce the peak longitudinal strain (e ll ) without significant reduction in EF, facilitating the moderate CR geometries to fit into this phenotype. Similarly, fibre stiffening can assist the CH and 'EH with wall thickening' cases to replicate HFpEF with lower EF. Luminescence imaging is a powerful and versatile technique for investigating cell physiology and pathology in living systems, making significant contributions to life science research and clinical diagnosis. In recent years, luminescent transition metal complexes have gained significant attention for diagnostic and therapeutic applications due to their unique photophysical and photochemical properties. In this Review, we provide a comprehensive overview of the recent development of luminescent transition metal complexes for bioimaging and biosensing applications, with a focus on transition metal centers with a d 6 , d 8 , and d 10 electronic configuration. We elucidate the structure-property relationships of luminescent transition metal complexes, exploring how their structural characteristics can be manipulated to control their biological behavior such as cellular uptake, localization, biocompatibility, pharmacokinetics, and biodistribution. Furthermore, we introduce the various design strategies that leverage the interesting photophysical properties of luminescent transition metal complexes for a wide variety of biological applications, including autofluorescence-free imaging, multimodal imaging, organelle imaging, biological sensing, microenvironment monitoring, bioorthogonal labeling, bacterial imaging, and cell viability assessment. Finally, we provide insights into the challenges and perspectives of luminescent transition metal complexes for bioimaging and biosensing applications, as well as their use in disease diagnosis and treatment evaluation.

Multiscale models of the cardiovascular system are emerging as effective tools for investigating the mechanisms that drive ventricular growth and remodeling. These models can predict how molecular-level mechanisms impact organ-level structure and function and could provide new insights that help improve patient care. MyoFE is a multiscale computer framework that bridges molecular and organ-level mechanisms in a finite element model of the left ventricle that is coupled with the systemic circulation. In this study, we extend MyoFE to include a growth algorithm, based on volumetric growth theory, to simulate concentric growth (wall thickening/thinning) and eccentric growth (chamber dilation/constriction) in response to valvular diseases. Specifically in our model, concentric growth is controlled by time-averaged total stress along the fiber direction over a cardiac cycle while eccentric growth responds to time-averaged intracellular myofiber passive stress over a cardiac cycle. The new framework correctly predicted different forms of growth in response to two types of valvular diseases, namely aortic stenosis and mitral regurgitation. Furthermore, the model predicted that LV size and function are nearly restored (reversal of growth) when the disease-mimicking perturbation was removed in the simulations for each valvular disorder. In conclusion, the simulations suggest that time-averaged total stress along the fiber direction and time-averaged intracellular myofiber passive stress can be used to drive concentric and eccentric growth in simulations of valve disease., (© 2024. Background: The postpartum period is a critical phase in which postpartum women experience dynamic changes in their physiology, psychology, and family status., Objective: This study investigated the changes in women's quality of life (QoL) during the first, third, and sixth months of the postpartum period and their associated factors., Methods: A single-group repeated-measure design was used to collect data from 282 postpartum women recruited from a regional hospital in Taiwan. We used the brief World Health Organization Quality of Life scale, Social Support Scale, and Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale to assess postpartum women's quality of life, social support, and postpartum depressive symptoms, respectively. The data were analyzed using trajectory analysis and generalized estimating equations., Results: The trajectory analysis indicated that postpartum women could be categorized into low, medium, and high QoL groups. Although the medium and high QoL groups maintained stable QoL levels, the low QoL group experienced a linear decrease in QoL over time. Moreover, the determinants of postpartum women's QoL were immigrant status, employment status, family type, social support, and postpartum depression., Conclusions: Health care providers should assess these determinants of postpartum QoL in perinatal women to identify those at risk of low postpartum quality of life. Three-dimensional echocardiography (3D ECHO) and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging are frequently used in patients and animals to evaluate heart functions. Inverse finite element (FE) modeling is increasingly applied to MR images to quantify left ventricular (LV) function and estimate myocardial contractility and other cardiac biomarkers. It remains unclear, however, as to whether myocardial contractility derived from the inverse FE model based on 3D ECHO images is comparable to that derived from MR images. To address this issue, we developed a subject-specific inverse FE model based on 3D ECHO and MR images acquired from seven healthy swine models to investigate if there are differences in myocardial contractility and LV geometrical features derived using these two imaging modalities. We showed that end-systolic and end-diastolic volumes derived from 3D ECHO images are comparable to those derived from MR images (R2=0.805 and 0.969, respectively). As a result, ejection fraction from 3D ECHO and MR images are linearly correlated (R2=0.977) with the limit of agreement (LOA) ranging from -17.95% to 45.89%. Using an inverse FE modeling to fit pressure and volume waveforms in subject-specific LV geometry reconstructed from 3D ECHO and MR images, we found that myocardial contractility derived from these two imaging modalities are linearly correlated with an R2 value of 0.989, a gradient of 0.895, and LOA ranging from -6.11% to 36.66%. This finding supports using 3D ECHO images in image-based inverse FE modeling to estimate myocardial contractility.

Background: Tissue adhesive has been widely used in ophthalmic surgery for various procedures, proving both effective and safe. However, no studies have compared the surgical efficacy of the tissue adhesive 2-octyl cyanoacrylate (SurgiSeal®) to that of traditional suture closure in Asian children undergoing surgery for lower lid epiblepharon. Methods: This is a single-center retrospective case-control study. Surgical correction for epiblepharon was performed on 22 patients from November 2019 to May 2023. A total of 20 patients who were followed up for at least 1 month were included for analysis. After standardized epiblepharon surgery, group A underwent wound closure with a subcuticular suture and 2-octyl cyanoacrylate, and group B underwent closure with a 6-O fast-absorbing surgical gut suture. Patients were followed up at 1, 4, and 12 weeks post-surgery. Results: A total of 10 patients (20 eyes) underwent skin closure with tissue adhesives (group A), and 10 patients (18 eyes) underwent wound closure using conventional suture material (group B). No significant differences in the sex ratio, mean age at operation, pre- and postoperative best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), or average surgical time were observed between groups. Both groups exhibited improved postoperative BCVA, with symptom relief and a significant decrease in the severity of keratopathy after surgery. Neither recurrence nor complications were reported during follow-up. The aesthetic results were similar between groups, while caregivers of children in the tissue adhesive group expressed high satisfaction regarding the ease of postoperative care. Conclusions: Successful closure of lower lid epiblepharon surgery wounds in children can be performed using 2-octyl cyanoacrylate (SurgiSeal®). This method is simple, safe, and effective when compared to conventional sutures.

Luminescent cyclometallated iridium(III) complexes bearing a 2-formylphenylboronic acid moiety were designed; one of the complexes was utilised to modify peptides containing an N-terminal cysteine to afford luminescent conjugates with selective organelle-targeting or furin-responsive properties.

Amid growing interest in using body heat for electricity in wearables, creating stretchable devices poses a major challenge. Herein, a hydrogel composed of two core constituents, namely the negatively-charged 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid and the zwitterionic (ZI) sulfobetaine acrylamide, is engineered into a double-network hydrogel. This results in a significant enhancement in mechanical properties, with tensile stress and strain of up to 470.3 kPa and 106.6%, respectively. Moreover, the ZI nature of the polymer enables the fabrication of a device with polar thermoelectric properties by modulating the pH. Thus, the ionic Seebeck coefficient (S i ) of the ZI hydrogel ranges from -32.6 to 31.7 mV K -1 as the pH is varied from 1 to 14, giving substantial figure of merit (ZT i ) values of 3.8 and 3.6, respectively. Moreover, a prototype stretchable ionic thermoelectric supercapacitor incorporating the ZI hydrogel exhibits notable power densities of 1.8 and 0.9 mW m -2 at pH 1 and 14, respectively. Background: Establishing a nurturing bond with the unborn child is essential for expectant mothers throughout pregnancy. While the influence of family support and pregnancy adaptation on maternal-fetal bonding is evident, these factors remain unexplored in the early stages of pregnancy. This study aims to elucidate the dynamic interaction between family support, pregnancy adaptation, and maternal-fetal bonding during the first trimester, explicitly investigating the mediating role of pregnancy adaptation., Method: A cross-sectional design was conducted to recruit expectant mothers between 8 and 12 weeks of gestation without significant complications., Results: Family support and pregnancy adaptation emerged as significant predictors of maternal-fetal bonding, and pregnancy adaptation mediated the relationship between family support and maternal-fetal bonding in the first trimester., Conclusions: The study confirms the critical role of family support and pregnancy adaptation in facilitating maternal-fetal bonding during early pregnancy, with pregnancy adaptation fully mediating this relationship. Introduction: Prompt reperfusion of coronary artery after acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is crucial for minimizing heart injury. The myocardium, however, may experience additional injury due to the flow restoration itself (reperfusion injury, RI). The purpose of this study was to demonstrate that short preconditioning (10 min) with selective autoretroperfusion (SARP) ameliorates RI, based on a washout hypothesis., Methods: AMI was induced in 23 pigs (3 groups) by occluding the left anterior descending (LAD) artery. In SARP-b (SARP balloon inflated) and SARP-nb (SARP balloon deflated) groups, arterial blood was retroperfused for 10 min via the great cardiac vein before releasing the arterial occlusion. A mathematical model of coronary circulation was used to simulate the SARP process and evaluate the potential washout effect., Results: SARP restored left ventricular function during LAD occlusion. Ejection fraction in the SARP-b group returned to baseline levels, compared to SARP-nb and control groups. Infarct area was significantly larger in the control group than in the SARP-b and SARP-nb groups. End-systolic wall thickness was preserved in the SARP-b compared to the SARP-nb and control groups. Analyte values (pH, lactate, glucose, and others), measured every 2 min during retroperfusion, suggest a "washout" effect as one important mechanism of action of SARP in reducing infarct size. With SARP, the values progressively approached baseline levels. Cardiac-coronary interaction is fundamental to the function of the heart. As one of the highest metabolic organs in the body, the cardiac oxygen demand is met by blood perfusion through the coronary vasculature. The coronary vasculature is largely embedded within the myocardial tissue which is continually contracting and hence squeezing the blood vessels. The myocardium-coronary vessel interaction is two-ways and complex. Here, we review the different types of cardiac-coronary interactions with a focus on insights gained from mathematical models. Specifically, we will consider the following: (1) myocardial-vessel mechanical interaction; (2) metabolic-flow interaction and regulation; (3) perfusion-contraction matching, and (4) chronic interactions between the myocardium and coronary vasculature. We also provide a discussion of the relevant experimental and clinical studies of different types of cardiac-coronary interactions. Finally, we highlight knowledge gaps, key challenges, and limitations of existing mathematical models along with future research directions to understand the unique myocardium-coronary coupling in the heart. Screening for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is an essential early step in the identification process and inaccurate screening may lead to significant delays in the onset of treatment. Past research has highlighted discrepancies in the performance of ASD screening tools such as the Social Communication Questionnaire (SCQ) among certain racial and ethnic groups. The current study explored the functioning of the SCQ among African American/Black and White respondents based on item level performance on the measure. Differential Item Functioning (DIF) analyses showed that 16 (41%) items of the SCQ functioned differently for African American/Black respondents when compared to White respondents. The coronary sinus reducer (CSR) is an emerging medical device for treating patients with refractory angina, often associated with myocardial ischemia. Patients implanted with CSR have shown positive outcomes, but the underlying mechanisms are unclear. This study sought to understand the mechanisms of CSR by investigating its effects on coronary microcirculation hemodynamics that may help explain the therapy's efficacy. We applied a validated computer model of the coronary microcirculation to investigate how CSR affects hemodynamics under different degrees of coronary artery stenosis. With moderate coronary stenosis, an increase in capillary transit time (CTT) [up to 69% with near-complete coronary sinus (CS) occlusion] is the key change associated with CSR. Because capillaries in the microcirculation can still receive oxygenated blood from the upstream artery with moderate stenosis, the increase in CTT allows more time for the exchange of gases and nutrients, aiding tissue oxygenation. With severe coronary stenosis; however, the redistribution of blood draining from the nonischemic region to the ischemic region (up to 96% with near-complete CS occlusion) and the reduction in capillary flow heterogeneity are the key changes associated with CSR. Because blood draining from the nonischemic region is not completely devoid of O 2 , the redistribution of blood to the capillaries in the ischemic region by CSR is beneficial especially when little or no oxygenated blood reaches these capillaries. This simulation study provides insights into the mechanisms of CSR in improving clinical symptoms. The mechanisms differ with the severity of the upstream stenosis. NEW & NOTEWORTHY Emerging coronary venous retroperfusion treatments, particularly coronary sinus reducer (CSR) for refractory angina linked to myocardial ischemia, show promise; however, their mechanisms of action are not well understood. We find that CSR's effectiveness varies with the severity of coronary stenosis. In moderate stenosis, CSR improves tissue oxygenation by increasing capillary transit time, whereas in severe stenosis, it redistributes blood from nonischemic to ischemic regions and reduces capillary flow heterogeneity.

Targeting Anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) is a promising therapeutic strategy for aberrant ALK-expressing malignancies including neuroblastoma, but resistance to ALK tyrosine kinase inhibitors (ALK TKI) is a distinct possibility necessitating drug combination therapeutic approaches. Using high-throughput, genome-wide CRISPR-Cas9 knockout screens, we identify miR-1304-5p loss as a desensitizer to ALK TKIs in aberrant ALK-expressing neuroblastoma; inhibition of miR-1304-5p decreases, while mimics of this miRNA increase the sensitivity of neuroblastoma cells to ALK TKIs. We show that miR-1304-5p targets NRAS, decreasing cell viability via induction of apoptosis. It follows that the farnesyltransferase inhibitor (FTI) lonafarnib in addition to ALK TKIs act synergistically in neuroblastoma, inducing apoptosis in vitro. In particular, on combined treatment of neuroblastoma patient derived xenografts with an FTI and an ALK TKI complete regression of tumour growth is observed although tumours rapidly regrow on cessation of therapy. Overall, our data suggests that combined use of ALK TKIs and FTIs, constitutes a therapeutic approach to treat high risk neuroblastoma although prolonged therapy is likely required to prevent relapse., (© 2024. Background: Bivalent mRNA vaccines were recommended since September 2022. However, coverage with a recent vaccine dose has been limited, and there are few robust estimates of bivalent VE against symptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection (COVID-19). We estimated VE of a bivalent mRNA vaccine dose against COVID-19 among eligible U.S. healthcare personnel who had previously received monovalent mRNA vaccine doses., Methods: We conducted a case-control study in 22 U.S. states, and enrolled healthcare personnel with COVID-19 (case-participants) or without COVID-19 (control-participants) during September 2022-May 2023. Participants were considered eligible for a bivalent mRNA dose if they had received 2-4 monovalent (ancestral-strain) mRNA vaccine doses, and were ≥67 days after the most recent vaccine dose. We estimated VE of a bivalent mRNA dose using conditional logistic regression, accounting for matching by region and four-week calendar period. We adjusted estimates for age group, sex, race and ethnicity, educational level, underlying health conditions, community COVID-19 exposure, prior SARS-CoV-2 infection, and days since the last monovalent mRNA dose., Results: Among 3,647 healthcare personnel, 1,528 were included as case-participants and 2,119 as control-participants. Participants received their last monovalent mRNA dose a median of 404 days previously; 1,234 (33.8%) also received a bivalent mRNA dose a median of 93 days previously. Overall, VE of a bivalent dose was 34.1% (95% CI, 22.6%-43.9%) against COVID-19 and was similar by product, days since last monovalent dose, number of prior doses, age group, and presence of underlying health conditions. However, VE declined from 54.8% (95% CI, 40.7%-65.6%) after 7-59 days to 21.6% (95% CI 5.6%-34.9%) after ≥60 days., Conclusions: Bivalent mRNA COVID-19 vaccines initially conferred approximately 55% protection against COVID-19 among U.S. healthcare personnel. Prenatal depression is highly prevalent, but its relationship with the multidimensional burden of physical symptoms during pregnancy remains underexplored. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between pregnancy-related physical symptom burden, including frequency, severity, and impact on life and pregnancy adaptation to prenatal depression, and to identify predictors of depression during pregnancy. The study was cross-sectional in design. A hospital-based setting providing comprehensive maternity care services from outpatient to inpatient. The sample consisted of two hundred forty-three pregnant individuals aged 20 and above with no major obstetrical complications. Structured questionnaires including demographic and obstetrical characteristics, depression, symptom burden, and pregnancy adaptation were used for data collection. Multiple linear regression analyses were performed to identify significant predictors of depression. The study revealed that approximately 32% of the variance in depression scores could be explained by the combined effects of pregnancy-related physical symptom burden and pregnancy adaptation. Specifically, low-level pregnancy adaptation, high-level symptom impact on life, unmarried status, and mid-level symptom severity were identified as the main predictors of prenatal depression among low-risk pregnant individuals. An increase in the mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) is a characteristic feature of cancer and cardiovascular disease. Therefore, it remains of crucial importance to develop new and improved fluorescent probes that are sensitive to the MMP, to report on mitochondrial health and function. Reported here are the design, synthesis, photophysical properties and biological characterisation of a series of BODIPY dyes, BODIPY-Mito- n , for mitochondria-targeted fluorescence imaging applications. Six BODIPY-Mito- n analogues were synthesised under mild conditions, and displayed excellent fluorescence quantum yields of between 0.59 and 0.72 in aqueous environments at physiological pH (pH = 7.4). The incorporation of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) chains to the triarylphosphonium cation moiety significantly improved the biocompatibility of the probes (BODIPY-Mito-6, IC 50 > 50 μM). All BODIPY-Mito- n compounds demonstrated a high MMP-sensitive localisation in the mitochondria, with Pearson's correlation coefficients (PCC) of between 0.76 and 0.96. Compounds BODIPY-Mito-2 and BODIPY-Mito-6 revealed the highest sensitivity to the MMP, with a decrease in the emission intensity of 62% and 75%, respectively following MMP depolarisation. Phytoremediation is an environmentally friendly, economical, and sustainable technique for restoring farmland. It can remove heavy metals and organic pollutants from the soil through the implementation of hyperaccumulator plants. In recent years, it has garnered significant interest from academic and industrial sectors. This article screened 368 research papers from the Web of Science core collection database related to farmland phytoremediation and conducted a bibliometric analysis of the domain based on CiteSpace. The paper intuitively demonstrates the most influential countries, the most productive institutions, the most contributing groups of authors, and the primary sources of farmland phytoremediation research domain. The findings additionally indicate that the research hotspots include: (1) mechanisms and principles of phytoremediation, (2) the improvement of restoration efficiency, (3) the economic, ecological, and sustainable development of phytoremediation. The exploration of plants with potential to accumulate heavy metals and produce large amounts of biomass is the research frontier within the field of farmland phytoremediation. Additionally, this bibliometric analysis can help scholars willing to work in this research field by concisely understanding the overall research field and frontiers. Introduction: Defects in the homologous recombination repair (HRR) pathway can include mutations in BRCA1 and BRCA2 (BRCAm) and other HRR genes (HRRm). These mutations are associated with a homologous recombination deficiency (HRD) phenotype. We evaluated testing journey and treatment patterns by BRCAm, HRRm, and HRD status in a real-world dataset., Methods: Deidentified data for patients who had undergone comprehensive genomic profiling using FoundationOne ® CDx were collected through December 31, 2020, from a real-world multi-tumor clinico-genomic database (CGDB) capturing data from clinics in the United States. Patients eligible for inclusion in this analysis had a confirmed diagnosis with advanced or metastatic disease between January 1, 2018, and December 31, 2019, for 1 of 15 solid tumor types. Objectives were to evaluate patient treatment patterns by BRCAm, HRRm, and HRD status and to describe the timing of when (throughout disease course) comprehensive genomic profiling was performed., Results: Among 9457 patients included in the overall population with evaluable biomarker status, 7856 (83.1%) received ≥ 1 systemic therapy. Among the 7856 patients who received systemic therapy, 2324 (30.0%) underwent testing before first-line therapy, 4114 (52.4%) were tested after receiving first-line therapy and before receiving subsequent therapy (if any), 970 (12.3%) were tested after second-line therapy and before receiving subsequent therapy (if any), and 447 (5.7%) patients underwent testing after receiving third-line therapy. A higher proportion of patients with BRCAm, HRRm, or HRD-positive status were treated with poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) inhibitors across all lines of therapy. There was no evidence of a meaningful difference in the proportion of patients who received other treatment (including chemotherapy and immunotherapy) by BRCAm, HRRm, or HRD status., Conclusion: The majority of patients from this real-world dataset underwent FoundationOne ® CDx testing after initiation of first-line treatment. Purpose: Palliative home care services (PHCS) have been emerging for years. However, limited data exist regarding quality indicators for pain control, unplanned hospital readmissions, and household deaths among terminal cancer and non-cancer patients receiving PHCS., Methods: We conducted a retrospective collection and recording of data from 1242 terminally ill cancer and non-cancer patients receiving PHCS. The data were obtained from the Hospice-Palliative Clinical Database (HPCD) of Taichung Veterans General Hospital (TCVGH) for the period from 2016 to 2021. T test and chi-square test were applied for characteristics and the quality indicators among cancer and non-cancer groups. Chi-square test was used for trend analysis of the number of patients receiving PHCS and the quality indicators among cancer and non-cancer groups throughout the study period., Results: A total of 1242 terminally ill cancer and non-cancer patients who had received PHCS were documented by TCVGH from the years 2016 to 2021, including 221 non-cancer patients and 1021 cancer patients having an average age of 70. The number of terminally ill cancer and non-cancer patients receiving PHCS has increased annually since 2016. Another finding was that age was a statistically significant factor impacting quality indicators. On the other hand, compared to non-cancer patients, cancer patients had a higher likelihood of receiving treatment with analgesics when needed. Their odds of needing analgesics more than three times within 4 days after PHCS enrollment were significantly elevated [OR 4.188, 95% CI (1.002, 17.51)]., Conclusion: The results of this 6-year observational study indicate a substantial increase in the number of terminal cancer and non-cancer patients receiving PHCS over the past decade. Introduction: The brain's reward system (RS) reacts differently to pain and its alleviation. This study examined the correlation between RS activity and behavior during both painful and pain-free periods in individuals with primary dysmenorrhea (PDM) to elucidate their varying responses throughout the menstrual cycle. Methods: Ninety-two individuals with PDM and 90 control participants underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rsfMRI) scans during their menstrual and peri-ovulatory phases. Regional homogeneity (ReHo) and amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF) analyses were used to evaluate RS responses. Psychological evaluations were conducted using the McGill Pain Questionnaire and the Pain Catastrophizing Scale. Results: ReHo analysis showed higher values in the left putamen and right amygdala of the PDM group during the peri-ovulatory phase compared to the menstrual phase. ALFF analysis revealed lower values in the putamen of the PDM group compared to controls, regardless of phase. ReHo and ALFF values in the putamen, amygdala, and nucleus accumbens were positively correlated with pain scales during menstruation, while ALFF values in the ventral tegmental area inversely correlated with pain intensity. Those with severe PDM (pain intensity ≥7) displayed distinct amygdala ALFF patterns between pain and pain-free phases. PDM participants also had lower ReHo values in the left insula during menstruation, with no direct correlation to pain compared to controls. Discussion: Our study highlights the pivotal role of the RS in dysmenorrhea management, exhibiting varied responses between menstrual discomfort and non-painful periods among individuals with PDM. During menstruation, the RS triggers mechanisms for pain avoidance and cognitive coping strategies, while it transitions to processing rewards during the peri-ovulatory phase. Aim: To determine the prevalence of deleterious mutations in BRCA1 and BRCA2 and in 13 genes involved in homologous recombination repair (HRR), the prevalence of genomic loss of heterozygosity and the allelic and hereditary status of BRCA1 , BRCA2 and other HRR gene mutations in multiple solid tumor types. Patients & methods: This was a retrospective observational study of patients with an advanced/metastatic diagnosis in one of 15 solid tumor types, who were identified in a real-world clinico-genomic database. Results: Tumor tissue samples from 9457 patients were analyzed, among which 4.7% had known or suspected deleterious BRCA1/2 mutations. The prevalence (range) of mutations in HRR genes was 13.6% (2.4%-26.0%) and genomic loss of heterozygosity ≥16% was 20.6% (2.6-34.4%) across all tumor types. Conclusion: The prevalence of mutations varied significantly depending on the type of tumor.

Soil is one type of Earth material demonstrating a wide range of physical, chemical, and biological properties. As the compositional profile of soil is a product of interaction between numerous abiotic and biotic components, it tends to be unique by its geographic origin. Hence, soil is paramount for predicting source or origin in forensic provenance and intelligence, food provenance, biosecurity, and archaeology. In the context of forensic investigation, source tracing of soil could be executed by a comparison or provenance analysis. Soil compositional fingerprints acquired using analytical methods must be carefully interpreted via suitable mathematical and statistical tools since multiple sources can contribute to the variability of soil other than its provenance. This article reviews recent trends in soil sampling and data interpretation strategies proposed for source tracing of soil evidence. Performances of soil provenance indicators are also described. Then, perspectives on possible research directions guiding forensic soil provenance are proposed. This timely critical review reveals the essential idea and gap in forensic soil provenance for stimulating the development of more efficient and effective provenance strategies.
