The COVID-19 pandemic has been one of the worst infectious disasters in human history. The best way to minimize COVID-19 transmission is to follow preventive measures. This study aimed to examine the factors influencing adolescents' COVID-19 prevention behaviors. The study was conducted online from 1 to 15 February 2023 with 196 adolescents aged between 13 and 18 years of age. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation, the independent t-test, analysis of variance (ANOVA), and multiple hierarchical regression analysis. Adolescents' COVID-19 prevention behaviors were influenced by intrapersonal factors, such as knowledge of and attitudes toward COVID-19, and interpersonal factors, such as social support. Community and governmental factors had no impact. Public health education strategies should be planned to include friends and family members in programs for preventing new infectious diseases such as COVID-19 so that adolescents can learn and share what they have learned, correct wrong behavior, and understand and change infection prevention behavior. In addition, it is necessary to actively support the development of public health education with appropriate contents in accordance with the characteristics and preferences of adolescents. Glutathione (GSH) is an essential molecule that plays a pivotal role in maintaining intracellular redox homeostasis, as well as other physiological processes. However, the chemical mechanisms underlying the GSH-induced processes remain insufficiently understood due to the lack of appropriate detection tools. Fluorescence GSH imaging can serve as a useful principle for the rapid, convenient, and non-destructive detection of GSH in living organisms. In this study, we developed a fluorescent GSH probe based on a linear, homoleptic Au(I) complex with two 1,3-diphenylbenzimidazolium carbene ligands. The Au(I) complex produced a fluorescence turn-on response to GSH. Fluorescence GSH signaling was characterized with a short response time of a few seconds. The rapid response was attributed to the displacement of the carbene ligand with GSH, which involved a labile inner-sphere coordination interaction. Finally, we demonstrated the biological utility of our GSH probe by unambiguously discriminating between different GSH levels in normal and senescent preadipocytes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: Based on the main concept of reasoned action theory, this study aimed to examine which of the attitude and subjective norms affect the intention of smoking cessation by using four types of antismoking messages: (1) positively and(2) negatively stimulating one's attitude toward smoking cessation; and (3) positively and (4) negatively reflected subjective norms for second‐hand smoking. Methods: We conducted a randomized field study in smoking areas in universities located in D city of South Korea. Two hundred and eighty‐seven male students who smoke daily were recruited in the field and randomly divided into four experimental groups and one control group. The participants in each experimental group were asked to read attitude/positive, attitude/negative, norm/positive, and norm/negative message. The data of attitude, subjective norm, and intention to stop smoking were collected. Results: There were significant differences in the intention to quit smoking in attitude/negative messages (F = 4.311, p =.015) and norm/positive messages (F = 4.353, p =.014). The effects of subjective norm were greater than those of attitude (p <.001). Conclusion: Emphasizing the positive subjective norm for smoking cessation among young smokers might be effective in persuading them to quit smoking. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: We report a method for the quantitative analysis of human serum leptin, which is a protein hormone associated with obesity, using a nanoarray protein chip based on a single-molecule sandwich immunoassay. The nanoarray patterning of a biotin-probe with a spot diameter of 150nm on a self-assembled monolayer functionalized by MPTMS on a glass substrate was successfully accomplished using atomic force microscopy (AFM)-based dip-pen nanolithography (DPN). Unlabeled leptin protein molecules in human serum were detected based on the sandwich fluorescence immunoassay by total internal reflection fluorescence microscopy (TIRFM). The linear regression equation for leptin in the range of 100zM–400aM was determined to be y =456.35x +80,382 (R =0.9901). The accuracy and sensitivity of the chip assay were clinically validated by comparing the leptin level in adult serum obtained by this method with those measured using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) performed with the same leptin standards and serum samples. In contrast to conventional ELISA techniques, the proposed chip methodology exhibited the advantages of ultra-sensitivity, a smaller sample volume and faster analysis time. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

This study introduces a new zircon reference material, LKZ-1, for the in situ U–Pb dating and O–Hf isotopic and trace element analyses. The secondary ion mass spectrometric analyses for this gem-quality single-crystal zircon yielded a weighted mean 206Pb/238U age of 572.6 ± 2.0 Ma (2σ, n = 22, MSWD = 0.90), with moderately high U concentrations (619 ± 21 ppm, 1 SD), restricted Th/U ratios (0.146 ± 0.002, 1 SD), and negligible common Pb content (206Pbc < 0.2%). A comparable 206Pb/238U age (570.0 ± 2.5 Ma, 2σ) was produced by the isotope dilution-thermal ionization mass spectrometry. The secondary ion mass spectrometric and laser ablation-assisted multiple collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer analyses respectively showed that LKZ-1 had little variation in O (δ18OV-SMOW = 10.65 ± 0.14‰; laser fluorination value = 10.72 ± 0.02‰; 1 SD) and Hf (176Hf/177Hf = 0.281794 ± 0.000016, 1 SD) isotopic compositions. LKZ-1 was also fairly homogeneous in its chemical composition (RSD of laser ablation ICPMS data ≤ 10%), displaying a relatively uniform chondrite-normalized rare earth element pattern ((Lu/Gd)N = 31 ± 3, Eu/Eu* = 0.43 ± 0.17, Ce/Ce* = 44 ± 32; 1 SD). These consistencies suggest that the LKZ-1 zircon is a suitable working standard for geochronological and geochemical analyses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mature hippocampal astrocytes exhibit a linear current-to-voltage (I-V) K + membrane conductance called passive conductance. It is estimated to enable astrocytes to keep potassium homeostasis in the brain. We previously reported that the TWIK-1/TREK-1 heterodimeric channels are crucial for astrocytic passive conductance. However, the regulatory mechanism of these channels by other binding proteins remains elusive. Here, we identified Na+/H+ exchange regulator-1 (NHERF-1), a protein highly expressed in astrocytes, as a novel interaction partner for these channels. NHERF-1 endogenously bound to TWIK-1/TREK-1 in hippocampal cultured astrocytes. When NHERF-1 is overexpressed or silenced, surface expression and activity of TWIK-1/TREK-1 heterodimeric channels are inhibited or enhanced, respectively. Furthermore, we confirmed that reduced astrocytic passive conductance by NHERF-1 overexpressing in the hippocampus increases kainic acid (KA)-induced seizure sensitivity. Taken together, these results suggest that NHERF-1 is a key regulator of TWIK-1/TREK-1 heterodimeric channels in astrocytes and suppression of TREK-1 surface expression by NHERF-1 increases KA-induced seizure susceptibility via reduction of astrocytic passive conductance., (© 2024 The Author(s).
