A theoretical description of ideal and viscous fluid media is proposed to address the problem of modeling damping effects of surface acoustic waves and more generally of any guided elastic waves at the interface between viscous fluids and solids. The influence of acoustic radiation and viscosity effects on different kinds of waves excited on various substrates is reported and discussed.

Research describing the formation of surface acoustic waves with general polarization is presented. In particular a periodic array of metallic electrodes deposited over a piezoelectric substrate is investigated.

An architecture for the implementation of optical pattern recognition is proposed that makes use of convolution-kernel-based optimal trade-off filters to allow for an increased speed of operation and filter storage capability. The derivation of these new convolution-kernel-based optimal trade-off filters is presented, and their noise robustness and discrimination capabilities are discussed. A multicriteria optimization method is introduced in order to find optimal filters for implementation on arbitrary spatial light modulators in the Fourier plane of an optical correlator. This method is applied to the trade-offs between noise robustness, sharpness of the correlation peak, and optical efficiency. A fast and simple algorithm is given in this case, which is independent of the particular form of the spatial light modulator coding constraint. It is used to characterize and to compare typical coding domains through the performances of their associated optimal filters.

Strongly confined waveguiding is one of the main applications of phononic crystals that can be achieved at any frequency and scale. Phononic crystal waveguides replace the cladding of classical homogeneous waveguides by a crystal possessing a complete phononic bandgap. We review the different material systems used to implement phononic crystal waveguides and how waveguiding is obtained by confining waves in a core or by coupling defects along a given direction. Finally, we introduce topological principles to design defect-less waveguides by exploiting the symmetry of crystals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This broad review summarizes recent advances and “hot” research topics in nanophononics and elastic, acoustic, and mechanical metamaterials based on results presented by the authors at the EUROMECH 610 Colloquium held on April 25–27, 2022 in Benicássim, Spain. The key goal of the colloquium was to highlight important developments in these areas, particularly new results that emerged during the last two years. This work thus presents a “snapshot” of the state-of-the-art of different nanophononics- and metamaterial-related topics rather than a historical view on these subjects, in contrast to a conventional review article. The introduction of basic definitions for each topic is followed by an outline of design strategies for the media under consideration, recently developed analysis and implementation techniques, and discussions of current challenges and promising applications. This review, while not comprehensive, will be helpful especially for early-career researchers, among others, as it offers a broad view of the current state-of-the-art and highlights some unique and flourishing research in the mentioned fields, providing insight into multiple exciting research directions.

The development of new surface acoustic wave devices exhibiting complicated electrode patterns or layered excitation transducers has been favored by an intense innovative activity in this area. For instance, devices exhibiting interdigital transducers covered by piezoelectric or dielectric layers have been fabricated and tested, but the design of such structures requires simulation tools capable to accurately take into account the actual shape of the wave guide elements. A modeling approach able to address complicated surface acoustic wave periodic structures (defined in the saggital plane) exhibiting any geometry then has been developed and implemented. It is based on the combination of a finite element analysis and a boundary element method. A first validation of the computation is reported by comparison with standard surface wave devices. Surface transverse wave resonators covered by amorphous silica have been built and consequently used for theory/experiment assessment. Also the case of recessed electrodes has been considered. The possibility to excite and detect acoustic waves in fluids using capacitive transducers built on silicon using surface micromachining offers attractive opportunities in the manufacturing of high quality low cost imaging probes. As in the case of standard probe transducers, simulation codes are required to accurately design such devices. The periodic structures extensively used for these capacitive transducers has to be accounted for. In this work, a two-dimensional finite element analysis of capacitive micromachined ultrasonic transducers (cMUT) is proposed, taking into account periodicity and radiation in fluids. The convergence of the calculation is verified using different computation approaches. It is then shown that the periodic computations provide a rapid and precise analysis of the cMUT compared to non periodic calculations. The mutual displacements are deduced from the periodic harmonic calculation, providing an efficient estimation of cross-talk phenomena arising for cMUT radiating in water. The capability of cMUT operating under such conditions to generate a low velocity wave guided at the fluid/silicon interface is theoretically pointed out. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The demand for high frequency surface acoustic wave devices for modern telecommunication applications imposes the development of devices able to answer the manufacturer requirements. The use of high velocity substrates for which a piezoelectric layer is required to excite and detect surface waves has been widely investigated and requires the implementation of accurate theoretical tools to identify the best combinations of material. The present paper proposes a mixed formulation combining finite element analysis with a boundary integral method to accurately simulate the capability of massive periodic interdigital transducers to excite and detect guided acoustic waves in layered media. Photonic crystal fibers (PCF) structure posses a full acoustic band gap. It is very important to understand the behavior of the localized modes to perform and interpret acousto-optical experiments in PCF structures.

Control of sound in phononic band-gap structures promises novel control and guiding mechanisms. Designs in photonic systems were quickly matched in phononics, and rows of defects in phononic crystals were shown to guide sound waves effectively. The vast majority of work in such phononic guiding has been in the frequency domain, because of the importance of the phononic dispersion relation in governing acoustic confinement in waveguides. However, frequency-domain studies miss vital information concerning the phase of the acoustic field and eigenstate coupling. Using a wide range of wavevectors k, we implement an ultrafast technique to probe the wave field evolution in straight and L-shaped phononic crystal surface-phonon waveguides in real- and k-space in two spatial dimensions, thus revealing the eigenstate-energy redistribution processes and the coupling between different frequency-degenerate eigenstates. Such use of k-t space is a first in acoustics, and should have other interesting applications such as acoustic-metamaterial characterization. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Periodic piezoelectric composites are widely used for imaging applications such as biomedical imaging or nondestructive evaluation. In this paper such structures are considered as phononic crystals, and their properties are investigated with respect to periodicity. This approach is based on the investigation of band gaps, that strongly depend on the properties of the considered composites (geometry, size, nature of materials). It is motivated by the fact that band gaps in principle allow one to excite the thickness mode without exciting other parasitic propagating waves. The used plane-wave-expansion method has already been applied to periodic piezoelectric composites, but, in contrast to previous approaches, not only waves propagating in the symmetry plane of the composite are considered, but also waves propagating with a nonzero angle of incidence with this plane. The method is applied to a representative 1-3 connectivity piezocomposite in order to demonstrate its potentialities for design purposes. The evolution of band gaps is explored with respect to the wave vector component parallel to piezoelectric transducer-rod axis. Wavelength-scale periodic microstructuring dramatically alters the optical properties of materials. An example is glass photonic crystal fibre (PCF), which guides light by means of a lattice of hollow micro/nanochannels running axially along its length. In this letter, we explore stimulated Brillouin scattering in PCFs with subwavelength-scale solid silica glass cores. The large refractive-index difference between air and glass allows much tighter confinement of light than is possible in all-solid single-mode glass optical fibres made using conventional techniques. When the silica-air PCF has a core diameter of around 70% of the vacuum wavelength of the launched laser light, we find that the spontaneous Brillouin signal develops a highly unusual multi-peaked spectrum with Stokes frequency shifts in the 10-GHz range. We attribute these peaks to several families of guided acoustic modes each with different proportions of longitudinal and shear strain, strongly localized to the core. At the same time, the threshold power for stimulated Brillouin scattering increases fivefold. The results show that Brillouin scattering is strongly affected by nanoscale microstructuring, opening new opportunities for controlling light—sound interactions in optical fibres. We report on the observation of elastic waves propagating in a two-dimensional phononic crystal composed of air holes drilled in an aluminum nitride membrane. The theoretical band structure indicates the existence of an acoustic band gap centered around 800 MHz with a relative bandwidth of 6.5% that is confirmed by gigahertz optical images of the surface displacement. Further electrical measurements and computation of the transmission reveal a much wider attenuation band that is explained by the deaf character of certain bands resulting from the orthogonality of their polarization with that of the source. We study both theoretically and experimentally the possibility of resonant tunneling of acoustic waves between two parallel guides created in a phononic crystal composed of steel cylinders in water. In the absolute band gap of the phononic crystal, ranging from 250 to 325 kHz, a full transmission band exists for propagation inside a straight waveguide. We show that the transfer of a particular wavelength can occur between two parallel waveguides coupled together through an appropriate coupling structure. We demonstrate experimentally the guiding and the bending of acoustic waves in highly confined waveguides formed by removing rods from a periodic two-dimensional lattice of steel cylinders immersed in water. Full transmission is observed for a one-period-wide straight waveguide within the full band gap of the perfect phononic crystal. However, when the waveguide width is doubled, destructive interference causes the transmission to vanish in the center of the passband. Waveguiding over a wide frequency range is obtained for a one-period-wide waveguide with two sharp 90° bends. A scattering matrix approach is proposed to avoid numerical instabilities arising with the classical transfer matrix method when analyzing the propagation of plane surface acoustic waves in piezoelectric multilayers. The method is stable whatever the thickness of the layers, and the frequency or the slowness of the waves. The computation of the Green’s function and of the effective permittivity of the multilayer is outlined. Abstract: We present a chirped pulse amplification (CPA) Ti:Sa laser generating sub-15fs pulses with expected high temporal quality. Gain-narrowing in the pre-amplifier is balanced by a variable spectral reflectivity mirror and by a fine adaptation of the saturation conditions. A crossed polarized wave generation (XPW) filter is introduced to enhance the contrast, reduce the pulse duration and improve the spectral quality. The pulses are generated at 10Hz repetition rate, with pulse energy of 110μJ and very clean Gaussian spectrum. The temporal contrast is evaluated by a measurement before the XPW filter and calculations of the enhancement by the filter. The potential temporal incoherent contrast is 1012 and the coherent contrast 1010. The performance of the system makes it suitable as an injector for petawatt lasers operating in the double-CPA scheme. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Impedance metasurfaces enable accurate regulation of acoustic fields. However, they can hardly supply a flexible response as such perfect operation is accompanied by stringent requirements on the design of unit cells. Actually, an arbitrary lossless and passive target impedance matrix requires the tuning of 3 independent real parameters. The set composed of a reflection phase, a transmission amplitude, and a transmission phase, enables the representation of an arbitrary impedance matrix, possibly possessing singular elements. In this paper, a mechanism of phase-amplitude-phase modulation (PAP modulation) is developed for the generic design of the unit cells of acoustic impedance metasurfaces. Adjustable acoustic impedance metasurfaces are further available under this framework. An impedance unit with 3 mobile parts is designed based on this idea. The assembled metasurface can handle different incidences for acoustic field manipulation at a given frequency. Beam steering and beam splitting are considered as demonstration examples and are verified by numerical simulation and experiment. Non-Newtonian liquids are characterized by stress and velocity-dependent dynamical response. In elasticity, and in particular, in the field of phononics, reciprocity in the equations acts against obtaining a directional response for passive media. Active stimuli-responsive materials have been conceived to overcome it. Significantly, Milton and Willis have shown theoretically in 2007 that quasi-rigid bodies containing masses at resonance can display a very rich dynamical behavior, hence opening a route toward the design of non-reciprocal and non-Newtonian metamaterials. In this paper, we design a solid structure that displays unidirectional shock resistance, thus going beyond Newton's second law in analogy to non-Newtonian fluids. We design the mechanical metamaterial with finite element analysis and fabricate it using three-dimensional printing at the centimetric scale (with fused deposition modeling) and at the micrometric scale (with two-photon lithography). The non-Newtonian elastic response is measured via dynamical velocity-dependent experiments. The ability to significantly change the mechanical and wave propagation properties of a structure without rebuilding it is currently one of the main challenges in the field of mechanical metamaterials. This stems from the enormous appeal that such tunable behavior may offer from the perspective of applications ranging from biomedical to protective devices, particularly in the case of micro-scale systems. In this work, a novel micro-scale mechanical metamaterial is proposed that can undergo a transition from one type of configuration to another, with one configuration having a very negative Poisson's ratio, corresponding to strong auxeticity, and the other having a highly positive Poisson's ratio. The formation of phononic band gaps can also be controlled concurrently which can be very useful for the design of vibration dampers and sensors. In solid state physics, phase transitions can influence material functionality and alter their properties. In mechanical metamaterials, structural-phase transitions can be achieved through instability or buckling of certain structural elements. However, these fast transitions in one mechanical parameter typically affect significantly the remaining parameters, hence, limiting their applications. Here, this limitation is addressed by designing a novel 3D mechanical metamaterial that is capable of undergoing a phase transition from positive to negative Poisson's ratio under compression, without significant degradation of Young's modulus (i.e. the phase transition is elastically-stable). The metamaterial is fabricated by two-photon lithography at the micro-scale and its mechanical behavior is assessed experimentally. As peptides gained interest as new drugs in the past years, their synthetic routes had been the subject of review and improvement. Fmoc/tBu-based solid-phase peptide synthesis (SPPS) is the most convenient technique, and the implementation in continuous flow has allowed for single-pass coupling and deprotection reactions. The focus of this research is to evaluate the relationship between undesired solvent-promoted reactions and final crude purity, by studying volume changes of a variable bed flow reactor through the synthesis. Based on the temperature, typical solvents for SPPS such as dimethylformamide (DMF) or N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) can cause unwanted Fmoc removal during wash steps. It was found that for every millilitre of DMF used at 80°C, up to 1 μmol of Fmoc-protected peptide is deprotected, leading to additional impurities. This effect can, however, be minimised by adding additives such as HOBt, which reduces such unwanted deprotection to just 0.1 μmol/ml., (© 2022 European Peptide Society and John Wiley & Sons Ltd.)

Stepper motors and actuators are among the main constituents of control motion devices. They are complex multibody systems with rather large overall volume due to their multifunctional parts and elaborate technological assembly processes. Miniaturization of individual parts is still posing assembly problems. In this paper, a single-step lithography process to fabricate a micro-stepper engine with an accurate micrometric rotation axis and an overall sub-millimeter size is demonstrated. The device is based on the frictional contacts and chiral metamaterials to get rid of the dependence on the accuracy of parts. Three-dimensional direct laser writing technology enables one to print polymer microstructures whose size varies from a few hundred nanometers to a few millimeters. It has been shown that, by tuning the laser power during writing, one can adjust continuously the optical and elastic properties with the same base material. This process is referred to as gray-tone lithography. In this paper, we characterize by Brillouin light scattering the complex elastic constant C11 of different reticulated isotropic polymers, at longitudinal phonon frequencies of the order of 16 GHz. We estimate the real part of the C11 constant to vary from 7 to 11 GPa as a function of laser power, whereas its imaginary part varies between 0.25 and 0.6 GPa. The linear elastic properties are further measured at a fixed laser power as a function of temperature, from 20∘C to 80∘C. Overall, we show that our 3D printed samples have a good elastic quality with high Q factors only ten times smaller than fused silica at hypersonic frequencies.

Previously, rotons were observed in correlated quantum systems at low temperatures, including superfluid helium and Bose-Einstein condensates. Here, following a recent theoretical proposal, we report the direct experimental observation of roton-like dispersion relations in two different three-dimensional metamaterials under ambient conditions. One experiment uses transverse elastic waves in microscale metamaterials at ultrasound frequencies. The other experiment uses longitudinal air-pressure waves in macroscopic channel–based metamaterials at audible frequencies. In both experiments, we identify the roton-like minimum in the dispersion relation that is associated to a triplet of waves at a given frequency. Our work shows that designed interactions in metamaterials beyond the nearest neighbors open unprecedented experimental opportunities to tailor the lowest dispersion branch—while most previous metamaterial studies have concentrated on shaping higher dispersion branches.

Manipulation of mechanical motion at the micro-scale has been attracting continuous attention, leading to the successful implementation of various strategies with potential impact on classical and quantum information processing. We propose an approach based on the interplay between a pair of localised mechanical resonators and travelling surface acoustic waves (SAW). We demonstrate the existence of a two-sided interaction, allowing the use of SAW to trigger and control the resonator oscillation, and to manipulate the elastic energy distribution on the substrate through resonator coupling. Observation of the vectorial structure of the resonator motion reveals the existence of two coupling regimes, a dipole-dipole-like interaction at small separation distance versus a surface-mediated mechanical coupling at larger separation. These results illustrate the potential of this platform for coherent control of mechanical vibration at a resonator level, and reciprocally for manipulating SAW propagation using sub-wavelength elements.

We model the generation of coherent acoustic beams in a homogeneous solid from the interference of two oppositely propagating, detuned optical laser beams. This configuration is reciprocal to Brillouin light scattering in the backward interaction arrangement. Generation of a confined ultrasound beam is predicted, close to the Brillouin frequency. Optoacoustic gain spectra and beam shapes are obtained numerically using a finite element model. The acoustic spectra are non-symmetrical, i.e., non-Lorentzian, and result from excitation of the continuum of bulk elastic waves. The acoustic beam width correspondingly varies with detuning frequency and optical beam waist.

The measurement of the displacements caused by the propagation of a short pulse of surface acoustic waves on a solid substrate is investigated. A stabilized time-domain differential interferometer is proposed, with the surface acoustic wave (SAW) sample placed outside the interferometer. Experiments are conducted with surface acoustic waves excited by a chirped interdigital transducer on a piezoelectric lithium niobate substrate having an operational bandwidth covering the 200-400MHz frequency range and producing 10-ns pulses with 36nm maximum out-of-plane displacement. The interferometric response is compared with a direct electrical measurement obtained with a receiving wide bandwidth interdigital transducer and good correspondence is observed. The effects of varying the path difference of the interferometer and the measurement position on the surface are discussed. We report, to the best of our knowledge, the first experimental observation of surface Brillouin scattering in silica-based photonic crystal fibers, arising from the interaction between guided light and surface acoustic waves. This was achieved using small-core and high air-filling fraction microstructured fibers that enable a strong opto-acoustic coupling near the air holes while mitigating the acoustic leakages in the microstructured cladding. It is further shown that this new type of light scattering is highly sensitive to the fiber air-hole microstructure, thus providing a passive and efficient way to control it. Our observations are confirmed through numerical simulations of the elastodynamics equation.

We report the observation of anti-crossings between hybrid-mode acoustic phonons in an axially-varying photonic crystal fiber. Our experimental results are analyzed using an electrostriction theory which reveals strong coupling between longitudinal and shear components of elastic wave. These anti-crossings are highly sensitive to the transverse fiber structure and thus could be potentially used for ultra-sensitive sensors and new opto-acoustic devices.

Brillouin scattering in optical fibres is a fundamental interaction between light and sound with important implications ranging from optical sensors to slow and fast light. In usual optical fibres, light both excites and feels shear and longitudinal bulk elastic waves, giving rise to forward-guided acoustic wave Brillouin scattering and backward-stimulated Brillouin scattering. In a subwavelength-diameter optical fibre, the situation changes dramatically, as we here report with the first experimental observation of Brillouin light scattering from surface acoustic waves. These Rayleigh-type surface waves travel the wire surface at a specific velocity of 3,400 m s(-1) and backscatter the light with a Doppler shift of about 6 GHz. As these acoustic resonances are sensitive to surface defects or features, surface acoustic wave Brillouin scattering opens new opportunities for various sensing applications, but also in other domains such as microwave photonics and nonlinear plasmonics.

We study simultaneous photonic and phononic crystal slabs created in Z-cut lithium niobate membranes. Bandgaps for guided waves are identified using the three-dimensional finite element method (FEM). Three lattices are considered: the square, the hexagonal, and the honeycomb lattices. We investigate the evolution of band gaps as a function of geometrical parameters such as hole radius and membrane thickness. We show the existence of dual photonic and phononic bandgaps in the triangular lattice for suitable geometrical parameters and specific modal symmetries for both the elastic and the electromagnetic fields.

We investigate the onset of nonlinear effects in hybrid polymer-chalcogenide optical microwires and show that they provide an enhanced Kerr nonlinearity while simultaneously mitigating stimulated Brillouin scattering as compared to both chalcogenide and silica optical fibers. It is shown in particular that the polymer cladding surrounding the microwire significantly broadens the Brillouin linewidth and increases the threshold, thus enabling Kerr nonlinear applications. We also study the influence of the wire diameter on the Brillouin dynamics and demonstrate that the Brillouin frequency shift can be finely tuned over a wide radio-frequency range.

We demonstrate theoretically that photons and acoustic phonons can be simultaneously guided and slowed down in specially designed nanostructures. Phoxonic crystal waveguides presenting simultaneous phononic and photonic band gaps were designed in perforated silicon membranes that can be conveniently obtained using silicon-on-insulator technology. Geometrical parameters for simultaneous photonic and phononic band gaps were first chosen for optical wavelengths around 1550 nm, based on the finite element analysis of a perfect phoxonic crystal of circular holes. A plain core waveguide was then defined, and simultaneous slow light and elastic guided modes were identified for some waveguide width. We present experimental and numerical results demonstrating the simultaneous frequency-selective excitation of several guided acoustic Brillouin modes in a photonic crystal fiber with a multi-scale structure design. These guided acoustic modes are identified by using a full vector finite-element model to result from elastic radial vibrations confined by the wavelength-scale air-silica microstructure. We discuss the simultaneous existence of phononic and photonic band gaps in a periodic array of holes drilled in a Si membrane. We investigate in detail both the centered square lattice and the boron nitride (BN) lattice with two atoms per unit cell which include the simple square, triangular and honeycomb lattices as particular cases. We show that complete phononic and photonic band gaps can be obtained from the honeycomb lattice as well as BN lattices close to honeycomb. Otherwise, all investigated structures present the possibility of a complete phononic gap together with a photonic band gap of a given symmetry, odd or even, depending on the geometrical parameters.

In this work, the singular behavior of charges at corners and edges on the metallized areas in SAW transducers are investigated. In particular, it is demonstrated that a tensor product of the commonly used Tchebychev bases overestimates the singularities at corners, and, hence, it cannot be used in a proper boundary element method formulation. On the other hand, it is shown that a simple finite element method-like approach is impractical due to the enormous number of unknowns required to model the electrode's large length-to-width ratio. These considerations are then used for defining a hybrid element model, which combines Tchebychev and linear polynomials over differently meshed domains. Such an approach is shown to suitably account for charge singularities while greatly reducing the number of unknowns. Results are obtained for isotropic and anisotropic substrates for non-periodic configurations.

We provide a complete experimental characterization of stimulated Brillouin scattering in a 160 m long solid-core photonic crystal fiber, including threshold and spectrum measurements as well as position-resolved mapping of the Brillouin frequency shift. In particular, a three-fold increase of the Brillouin threshold power is observed, in excellent agreement with the spectrally-broadened Brillouin gain spectrum. Distributed measurements additionally reveal that the rise of the Brillouin threshold results from the broadband nature of the gain spectrum all along the fiber and is strongly influenced by strain. Our experiments confirm that these unique fibers can be exploited for the passive control or the suppression of Brillouin scattering.

The propagation of acoustic waves in a square-lattice phononic crystal slab consisting of a single layer of spherical steel beads in a solid epoxy matrix is studied experimentally. Waves are excited by an ultrasonic transducer and fully characterized on the slab surface by laser interferometry. A complete band gap is found to extend around 300 kHz, in good agreement with theoretical predictions. The transmission attenuation caused by absorption and band gap effects is obtained as a function of frequency and propagation distance. Well confined acoustic wave propagation inside a line-defect waveguide is further observed experimentally.

The need for high-frequency, wide-band filters has instigated many developments based on combining thin piezoelectric films and high acoustic velocity materials (sapphire, diamond-like carbon, silicon, etc.) to ease the manufacture of devices operating above 2 GHz. In the present work, a technological process has been developed to achieve thin-oriented, single-crystal lithium niobate (LiNbO3) layers deposited on (100) silicon wafers for the fabrication of radio-frequency (RF) surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices. The use of such oriented thin films is expected to favor large coupling coefficients together with a good control of the layer properties, enabling one to chose the best combination of layer orientation to optimize the device. A theoretical analysis of the elastic wave assumed to propagate on such a combination of material is first exposed. Technological aspects then are described briefly. Experimental results are presented and compared to the state of art.
