7. The Importance of Relationship Building with ADHD Students

Abstract

ADHD's becoming more prevalent in classrooms speaks to how schools must train and support their teachers to stop and work with their "non-stop" students to build a strong relationship with them. This concept becomes challenging when behaviours get in the way of learning, and teachers lack confidence to teach and support students with ADHD. There are many techniques teachers can use to help these students be successful. In order for these strategies to work, a teacher must understand that none of these techniques will be successful without building a positive relationship with a student who has ADHD.

Abstract

Study objectiveEmergency departments (EDs) often serve vulnerable populations who may lack primary care and have suffered disproportionate COVID-19 pandemic effects. Comparing patients having and lacking a regular source of medical care and other ED patient characteristics, we assessed COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy, reasons for not wanting the vaccine, perceived access to vaccine sites, and willingness to get the vaccine as part of ED care.MethodsThis was a cross-sectional survey conducted from December 10, 2020, to March 7, 2021, at 15 safety net US EDs. Primary outcomes were COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy, reasons for vaccine hesitancy, and sites (including EDs) for potential COVID-19 vaccine receipt.ResultsOf 2,575 patients approached, 2,301 (89.4%) participated. Of the 18.4% of respondents who lacked a regular source of medical care, 65% used the ED as their usual source of health care. The overall rate of vaccine hesitancy was 39%; the range among the 15 sites was 28% to 58%. Respondents who lacked a regular source of medical care were more commonly vaccine hesitant than those who had a regular source of medical care (47% versus 38%, 9% difference, 95% confidence interval 4% to 14%). Other characteristics associated with greater vaccine hesitancy were younger age, female sex, Black race, Latinx ethnicity, and not having received an influenza vaccine in the past 5 years. Of the 61% who would accept a COVID-19 vaccine, 21% stated that they lacked a primary physician or clinic at which to receive it; the vast majority (95%) of these respondents would accept the COVID-19 vaccine as part of their care in the ED.ConclusionED patients who lack a regular source of medical care are particularly hesitant regarding COVID-19 vaccination. Most COVID-19 vaccine acceptors would accept it as part of their care in the ED. EDs may play pivotal roles in COVID-19 vaccine messaging and delivery to highly vulnerable populations.

Abstract

Hyperconnectivity of neuronal circuits due to increased synaptic protein synthesis is thought to cause autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). The mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) is strongly implicated in ASDs by means of upstream signalling; however, downstream regulatory mechanisms are ill-defined. Here we show that knockout of the eukaryotic translation initiation factor 4E-binding protein 2 (4E-BP2)-an eIF4E repressor downstream of mTOR-or eIF4E overexpression leads to increased translation of neuroligins, which are postsynaptic proteins that are causally linked to ASDs. Mice that have the gene encoding 4E-BP2 (Eif4ebp2) knocked out exhibit an increased ratio of excitatory to inhibitory synaptic inputs and autistic-like behaviours (that is, social interaction deficits, altered communication and repetitive/stereotyped behaviours). Pharmacological inhibition of eIF4E activity or normalization of neuroligin 1, but not neuroligin 2, protein levels restores the normal excitation/inhibition ratio and rectifies the social behaviour deficits. Thus, translational control by eIF4E regulates the synthesis of neuroligins, maintaining the excitation-to-inhibition balance, and its dysregulation engenders ASD-like phenotypes.

Abstract

Examined whether adolescents with psychiatric problems and their mothers interact differently as a function of symptom profile. Results, based on 38 dyads, indicate that dyads where adolescents scored lower on the depression scale were calmer, friendlier, and more involved than those with high depression scores. Abstract

Reports on a recently developed scale that examined adolescents'(N=400) perceptions of their family responsibility-taking. Results indicate that adolescents who felt they assumed more family responsibility reported less depression, more intimate relationships with their parents, and higher self-esteem. Adolescents viewed family responsibility-taking as positive, regardless of gender or ethnicity. (RJM)

A study of 22 preschool children with autism investigated touch therapy effects on problems commonly associated with autism including inattentiveness, touch aversion, and withdrawal. Orienting to irrelevant sounds and stereotypic behaviors decreased in both the touch therapy and the touch control group; however, orienting decreased more in the touch therapy group. (CR)

Abstract

The ASY-EOS experiment at GSI laboratory measured the direct and elliptic flow of neutrons and light charged particles in the reaction 197Au+197 Au at 400 A MeV incident energy. The ratio of elliptic flow of neutrons with respect to that of the light charged particles was used as main experimental observable to probe the density dependence of the symmetry energy term of the nuclear equation of state. Results, obtained by comparison of the experimental data with the UrQMD model predictions, strongly support a moderately soft to linear density dependence of the symmetry energy at suprasaturation densities below 2ρ0.

Abstract

Cloacal exstrophy is a rare birth defect that affects both the genitourinary and gastrointestinal tract, with an estimated incidence between 1:200,000 and 1:400,000 live births. The exact mechanism that leads to this defect is still unknown. Our purpose is to report a case of omphalocele-exstrophy-imperforate anus-spinal defect (OEIS) complex with a rare variant to add to the literature. A 28-year-old female with no known medical history had a monochorionic diamniotic twin pregnancy. At 20 weeks of gestation a prenatal ultrasound demonstrated multiple fetal anomalies on twin B, including omphalocele, absent right kidney, non-visualization of bladder, and single umbilical artery. She had a scheduled Cesarean section at 34 weeks and 5 days of gestation. Twin B had a large omphalocele with an intact sac. Below the omphalocele, there was a cecal plate with a prolapsed ileum and a second small orifice corresponding to the hindgut. Two hemivaginas and hemiclitorises were appreciated inferior to the cecal plate but superior to a bladder plate bridge joining both halves. Each of the hemivaginas was connected to a hemiuterus with its own fallopian tube and ovary. The bladder was on both sides of the cecal plate and connected in the midline adopting a crescent shape with the concave side facing cephalad. Genetic testing confirmed an XX karyotype. On day-of-life 5 the patient underwent omphalocele repair and closure of the abdominal wall, tubularization of the cecal plate, and an end colostomy. Additionally, the hemivaginas and hemiclitorises were relocated to an orthotopic position and the bladder plates were joined together and used to cover part of the abdominal wall defect. She was discharged on day of life 42 with a weight of 2.72 kg. She continues to follow up outpatient. Her second stage procedure is still pending. The position of the genital tract superior to the bladder exstrophy observed in this case has not been described before and is not fully explained by the current theories on the development of OEIS.
