Abstract

Rural areas of the Silesian Lowland, undergoing social and economic transformations today, have had a strong impact on the formation of the region's settlement landscapes. Political and economic changes after 1989 have affected the development of rural areas, in particular of ‘privileged’ settlements for which the proximity of towns and a trunk road are favourable factors. The result of these seemingly positive factors is the escape of young people (potential farmers) to the cities and an influx of new settlers. This affects social behaviour and activity, as well as the visual rural landscape, creating suburban zones with residential and leisure functions. The village seems to have lost its typical character but has it really? The subject of the research is, therefore, an analysis of changes in the spatial and social structure of a rural village as exemplified by Borek Strzeliński, which allows setting out its functions. The research issue is to determine the level of social activity of rural residents and their attitude towards the local cultural heritage, which influences their identity and the value of the landscape. The use of integrated methods of field work based on a free sociological survey has allowed identifying the spatial directions of village development and threats resulting from divided social activity.

Abstract

All over the world and for thousands of years, megaliths have been significant cultural elements, as well as sacred sites and places of power. Nowadays megaliths act as a strong magnet for tourists, who appreciate their history, esoterica and magic. Some megaliths were used for astronomical observations, so vital to maintain the continuity of harvest and crop. Other megalithic constructions were erected for funerary purposes, and served as individual or collective burial chambers. Megalithic structures are usually referred to as belonging to the European Neolithic but it has to be stressed that some megalithic constructions date back to the Bronze Age, and some were also built on other continents. Megaliths are a vital element of landscape and for historical reasons they are a sui generis monument, commemorating prehistorical cultures. At the same time, along with the remaining elements of the natural and cultural environment, they create a unique image of place identity, attracting large numbers of tourists. Interestingly, despite the strong attraction exercised by megaliths, there are still many places where tourism does not develop as rapidly as might be assumed. For the above-mentioned reasons, a comparative analysis of several megalithic sites has been conducted in Poland, Sweden, Portugal and Denmark. The following elements have been analysed: the megaliths immediate surroundings, the existing and planned or under-construction tourist and communication infrastructure, as well as architectural and spatial technical solutions and development. Also the key negative and positive elements have been defined which influence the tourist potential of the places in question, and constitute the tourism attractiveness factors of a region.

Abstract

This paper investigates the state of information on geoheritage or, in a wider perspective, a geotourist offer that can be found on the Internet, the basic source of information for the potential tourist, at the example of Lower Silesia. In order to achieve the intended aim, firstly a discussion concerning the division of the tourist resources in the literature was presented. It served as the starting point for the selection and analysis of particular resources, and their online promotion techniques. A place of the geotourist resources within this group was highlighted. Next, the analysis of official documents that constitute the basis for actions aimed at the promotion of tourist resources, with the geotourist ones in particular, was carried out. Predominantly, they comprised the strategies of tourism development at different levels, i.e. the level of voivodeship, and the selected counties, where crucial georesources, or geoheritage complexes of the region are located. One of the most important examples is the Kłodzko County, officially referred to in its strategy as “the Tourist County.” The authors also indicated the nature-based tourist resources of Lower Silesia, placing special emphasis on the resources presented in the Geotourist Catalogues - the most comprehensive presentations of this kind of resources in Poland. In the following part, another analysis was presented regarding information on natural resources promoted on the websites of public administration, or local authorities. Selected websites were examined for their accessibility and the manner in which the georesources are presented. The main result of the conducted research is highlighting the fact that geotourism as a distinctive tourism category is not sufficiently promoted online. The reason behind it is the dispersion of geotourist resources being categorised under divergent umbrella terms. A set of actions for the implementation of changes that can possibly improve the present situation was suggested.

Abstract

The article discusses the application of synthesis gas from pyrolysis of plastics in petrol engine. The appropriate experimental measurements were performed on a combustion engine LGW 702 designated for micro-cogeneration unit. The power parameters, economic parameters in term of brake specific fuel consumption, and internal parameters of the engine were compared to the engine running on the reference fuel - natural gas and synthesis gas. Burning synthesis gas leads to decreased performance by about 5% and to increased mass hourly consumption by 120 %. In terms of burning, synthesis gas has similar properties as natural gas. Compared with [5] a more detailed study has been prepared on the effects of angle of spark advance on the engine torque, giving more detailed assessment of engine cycle variability and considering specification of start and end of combustion in the logarithm p-V diagram.

31. Numerical modelling of retrofitting an industrial boiler type OP-230 for predicting NOx reduction

Abstract

This study focuses on the indirect co-firing CFD simulations of reductions in NOx emissions relative to the coal combustion. For the given biomass-derived syngas composition and 15% syngas heat input, two arrangements of nozzles dedicated to the syngas injection into the furnace of an older PC-fired boiler of type OP-230 with low-emission burners on the front wall were chosen to investigate the impact of their location on the reduction in NOx emissions. It was shown that the highest reduction achieved by means of the improvement of the air staging via the dual-fuel technique can reach up to 40% (Case 1: nozzles at the elevation of the bottom row of burners) and up to 32% (Case 2: nozzles above the upper level of the burners). The modelling results also showed that one can meet the requirements for co-firing of coal with waste derived syngas. The boiler can be retrofitted for the fulfilment of the prospective environmental protection regulations relating to levels of NOx emissions by combining the described technology with SNCR methods. It is also very important that the indirect co-firing enables reduction of carbon dioxide emissions proportionally to the syngas heat input.

32. Assessment of water loss level on the example of selected distribution systems

Abstract

One of the major problems of waterworks is the excessive failure of distribution systems and associated water leaks. Water losses in water supply networks and systems are often a very high percentage of water supplied into the network. Therefore, a comprehensive analysis and assessment of water losses should be the basis for undertaking modernisation efforts to reduce the costs associated with water production and distribution. The article presents the analysis of water losses performed on the basis of data provided by the Water Supply and Sewerage Company in Radomsko. The data comprised the information on the water supply infrastructure and quantitative water balance for the period of 2010–2015. Based on the data, the following water loss indices were calculated: the percentage water loss (PWS) or non revenue water (NRW) index, real loss basic (RLB), non revenue water basic index (NRWB), unavoidable annual real losses (UARL) and infrastructure leakage index (ILI). The obtained results demonstrate that due to continuous actions in the recent years the Water Supply and Sewerage Company in Radomsko has reduced the water loss to the levels that correspond to the average water loss on national and international levels.

33. Adsorption of selected pharmaceuticals on activated carbons from water

Abstract

The possibility of using activated carbon for the removal of salicylic acid andiibuprofen sodium has been explored. These compounds are observed in crude and treated sewage and in surface water. The effect of pH on the adsorption efficiency was assessed. Tests were carried out from solutions with pH ranging from 2 to 10 (salicylic acid) and from 6 to 10 (iibuprofen sodium). It was found that the higher pH, the lower the adsorption of the compounds tested. Salicylic acid was most efficiently adsorbed from a solution with pH = 2, in which it occurred mainly in an undissociated form. The achieved efficiency of salicylic acid adsorption from solutions with pH=2 was 91%, while from those with pH=10, it was 55% (Co=4 mmol/L). The efficiency of removing ibuprofen sodium from the pH=6 solution was 64%, while from the pH = 10 solution, 60%.The adsorption of both salicylic acid and ibuprofen sodium follows the kinetics equation of the pseudo-2nd order. For the description of the adsorption isotherms, the Freundlich, Langmuir, Temkin and Dubibin-Radushkevich models were employed. The both compounds are described with the highest correlation coefficient in the case of the Freundlich equation.

34. Dual-fuel combustion in a tangential PC-fired boiler of type OP-230 – computational simulations

Abstract

Syngas co-firing in coal fired boilers can be one of the prospective technologies which may help to retrofit some of still functioning older boilers. This study focuses on the results of CFD simulations of wood biomass-derived syngas co-firing with coal in an older mid-sized tangential PC-fired boiler of type OP-230. The design and the implementation of the combustion process predispose the boiler to the connection with the biomass gasifier in which low calorific syngas from solid raw biomass gasification can be produced and next used as a supplemental fuel in the coal furnace. The simulations were performed to predict the influence of the improvement of the air staging via the dual-fuel technique based on the indirect co-firing technology on both the reductions in NOx emissions relative to the baseline (no syngas) and the residence time of syngas particles in a zone with the temperature higher than 1123K. This way one can determine whether the boiler can be recommended to indirect co-firing of syngas derived from agricultural residues biomass or SRF gasification containing such troublesome components as chlorine and alkali.

Dynamic development of biobanking industry (both business and science) resulted in an increased number of IT systems for samples and data management. The most difficult and complicated case for the biobanking community was cooperation between institutions, equipped with different IT systems, in the field of scientific research, mainly data interchange and information flow. Tools available on the market relate mainly to the biobank or collection level. Efficient and universal protocols including the detailed information about the donor and the sample are still very limited. Here, we have developed BioSCOOP, a communication protocol in the form of a well documented JSON API. The main aim of this study was to harmonize and standardize the rules of communication between biobanks on the level of information about the donor together with information about the sample. The purpose was to create a communication protocol for two applications: to transfer the information between different biobanks and to allow the searching and presentation of the sample and data sets. 36. The removal of chloramphenicol from water through adsorption on activated carbon

Abstract

The presented research investigated the removal of chloramphenicol from water solutions on selected activated carbon available in three grades with different porous structure and surface chemical composition. Two models of adsorption kinetics were examined, i.e. the pseudo-first order and the pseudo-second order models. For all examined cases, the results of tests with higher value of coefficient R2 were described by the equation for pseudo-second order kinetics. The adsorption kinetics was also investigated on the activated carbons modified with ozone. The measurements were taken from the solutions with pH values of 2 and 7. Chloramphenicol was the most efficiently adsorbed on the activated carbon F-300 from the solutions with pH=7, and on the activated carbon ROW 08 Supra from the solutions with pH=2. The adsorption of this antibiotic was in the majority of cases higher from the solutions with pH=2 than pH=7. The modification of the activated carbons with ozone enhanced their adsorption capacities for chloramphenicol. The adsorption is influenced by the modification method of activated carbon (i.e. the duration of ozonation of the activated carbon solution and the solution temperature). The results were described with the Freundlich and Langmuir adsorption isotherm equations. Both models well described the obtained results (high R2 values).

Abstract

Minimizing energy consumption is the effect of sustainable design technics as among many others: designing buildings with solar access and natural ventilation, using climate responsive design materials and effective insulation. Contemporary examples of zero-carbon cities: Masdar City, United Arab Emirates and Dongtan, China, confirm technical feasibility of renewable energy by implementation of solar PV and wind technologies. The ecological city - medium or high density urban settlement separated by greenspace causes the smallest possible ecological footprint on the surrounding countryside through efficient use of land and its resources, recycling used materials and converting waste to energy. This paper investigates the concept of energy sustainable cities, examines, how urban settlements might affect building energy design in eco-villages, eco-districts (e.g. Vauban, Freiburg in Germany, Bo01 Malmo in Sweden), and discuss the strategies for achieving Zero Emission Cities principles in densely populated areas. It is focused on low energy architectural design solutions which could be incorporated into urban settlements to create ecological villages, districts and cities, designed with consideration of environmental impact, required minimal inputs of energy, water, food, waste and pollution.

38. Highly Flexible Multimode Digital Signal Processing Systems Using Adaptable Components and Controllers

Abstract

Multimode systems have emerged as an area- and power-efficient platform for implementing multiple timewise mutually exclusive digital signal processing (DSP) applications in a single hardware space. This paper presents a design methodology for integrating flexible components and controllers into primarily fixed logic multimode DSP systems, thereby increasing their overall efficiency and implementation capabilities. The components are built using a technique called small-scale reconfigurability (SSR) that provides the necessary flexibility for both intermode and intramode reconfigurabilities, without the penalties associated with general-purpose reconfigurable logic. Using this methodology, area and power consumption are reduced beyond what is provided by current multimode systems, without sacrificing performance. The results show an average of 7% reduction in datapath component area, 26% reduction in register area, 36% reduction in interconnect MUX cost, and 68% reduction in the number of controller signals, with an average 38% increase in component utilization for a set of benchmark 32-bit DSP applications.

Abstract

Fresh arterial grafts, obtained during multiorgan harvests, enlarge treatment possibilities of patients suffering both lower extremities ischemic occlusive desease and end stage kidney desease. Since 1998 untill 2002 researchers performed five simultaneous abdominal aorta aneurysm reconstructions with fresh arterial grafts and cadaveric kidney transplantations. The surgical procedure as well as the postoperative flow in four of the patiens was with no serious complications. This rare postoperative complication which has required close co-operation of surgeons, anesthesiologists and nephrologists, as well as the one year follow up of the patient, is described in the study.
