Acylhydrazone-based fluorescent conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) with inter-and intra-hydrogen bonding-controlled emissive properties were prepared. The synthesized CMPs (BH-CMP and ABH-CMP) were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, solid-state 13C cross polarization/magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and photoluminescence spectroscopy. Interestingly, BH-CMP exhibited emission enhancement via adsorption of water molecules, whereas the emission of ABH-CMP, which possesses free amine groups, decreased upon the addition of water molecules. The differences in the emission trends of BH-CMP and ABH-CMP in the presence of water molecules originate from the formation of different hydrogen-bonding networks in each CMP. The acylhydrazone-based CMPs were applied to the detection of nitroaromatic compounds. As a result, ABH-CMP in DMF exhibited high selectivity for 1,3,5-trinitrotoluene (TNT) over other nitroaromatic compounds nitrobenzene, 1-chloro-4-nitrobenzene, 2,3-dichloronitrobenzene, and 2,4-dinitrotoluene.

Pre-trained generators have been frequently adopted in compressed sensing (CS) owing to their ability to effectively estimate signals with the prior of NNs. To further refine the NN-based prior, we propose a framework that allows the generator to utilize additional information from given measurements of training samples for prior learning, thereby yielding more accurate reconstruction for signals. As our framework has a simple form, it can be easily applied to existing CS methods using pre-trained generators. Through extensive experiments, we demonstrate that our framework consistently outperforms these works by a large margin and can reduce the reconstruction error up to an order of magnitude for the presented target applications. We also explain the experimental success theoretically by showing that our framework can slightly relax the stringent signal presence condition, which is required to guarantee the success of signal recovery.

Given its low dose and compactness, chest radiography has been widely used as the first-line test to determine the presence of lung anomalies. Nevertheless, a high-performance diagnosis for initial screening to detect shadows in lungs due to general lung diseases is not available. During initial screening, chest radiography can be used to distinguish any diseased lung shadowing caused by lung diseases. Thus, chest radiography can contribute to the early diagnosis and prevention of novel lung infectious diseases if training for a specific disease is not required. Accordingly, we propose a deep-learning-based diagnostic system called contrast-shifted instances via patch-based percentile (CSIP) to automatically detect diseased lung shadowing via training only on chest X-ray data from healthy subjects. CSIP is the first application of a patch-based percentile approach to state-of-the-art one-class classifiers (OCCs). This application improves the sensitivity of the network to recognize shadowing density differences in each local area of the lung, thereby considerably improving the diagnostic performance of average area under the curve (AUC) by more than 20% and achieving a sufficiently high diagnostic performance (average AUC of 0.96 for various lung diseases), compared to the existing OCC case without applying our patch-based approach (average AUC of 0.74). Therefore, CSIP may contribute to the early detection of anomalies caused by novel infectious diseases such as variants of the coronavirus disease, for whom training data are scarce. Purpose Early detection and classification of bone tumors in the proximal femur is crucial for their successful treatment. This study aimed to develop an artificial intelligence (AI) model to classify bone tumors in the proximal femur on plain radiographs. Methods Standard anteroposterior hip radiographs were obtained from a single tertiary referral center. A total of 538 femoral images were set for the AI model training, including 94 with malignant, 120 with benign, and 324 without tumors. The image data were pre-processed to be optimized for training of the deep learning model. The state-of-the-art convolutional neural network (CNN) algorithms were applied to pre-processed images to perform three-label classification (benign, malignant, or no tumor) on each femur. The performance of the CNN model was verified using fivefold cross-validation and was compared against that of four human doctors. Results The area under the receiver operating characteristic (AUROC) of the best performing CNN model for the three-label classification was 0.953 (95% confidence interval, 0.926–0.980). The diagnostic accuracy of the model (0.853) was significantly higher than that of the four doctors (0.794) (P = 0.001) and also that of each doctor individually (0.811, 0.796, 0.757, and 0.814, respectively) (PConclusions The AI-based model demonstrated high performance in classifying the presence of bone tumors in the proximal femur on plain radiographs. Our findings suggest that AI-based technology can potentially reduce the misdiagnosis of doctors who are not specialists in musculoskeletal oncology.

BackgroundThis study aims to develop artificial intelligence (AI) system to automatically classify patients with maxillary sinus fungal ball (MFB), chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS), and healthy controls (HCs).MethodsWe collected 512 coronal image sets from ostiomeatal unit computed tomography (OMU CT) performed on subjects who visited a single tertiary hospital. These data included 254 MFB, 128 CRS, and 130 HC subjects and were used for training the proposed AI system. The AI system takes these 1024 sets of half CT images as input and classifies these as MFB, CRS, or HC. To optimize the classification performance, we adopted a 3-D convolutional neural network of ResNet 18. We also collected 64 coronal OMU CT image sets for external validation, including 26 MFB, 18 CRS, and 20 HCs from subjects from another referral hospital. Finally, the performance of the developed AI system was compared with that of the otolaryngology resident physicians.ResultsClassification performance was evaluated using internal 5-fold cross-validation (818 training and 206 internal validation data) and external validation (128 data). The area under the receiver operating characteristic over the internal 5-fold cross-validation and the external validation was 0.96 ±0.006 and 0.97 ±0.006, respectively. The accuracy of the internal 5-fold cross-validation and the external validation was 87.5 ±2.3% and 88.4 ±3.1%, respectively. As a result of performing a classification test on external validation data from six otolaryngology resident physicians, the accuracy was obtained as 84.6 ±11.3%.ConclusionsThis AI system is the first study to classify MFB, CRS, and HC using deep neural networks to the best of our knowledge. The proposed system is fully automatic but performs similarly to or better than otolaryngology resident physicians. Therefore, we believe that in regions where otolaryngology specialists are scarce, the proposed AI will perform sufficiently effective diagnosis on behalf of doctors.

Dysarthria may present during the natural course of many degenerative neurological conditions. Hypokinetic and ataxic dysarthria are common in movement disorders and represent the underlying neuropathology. We developed an artificial intelligence (AI) model to distinguish ataxic dysarthria and hypokinetic dysarthria from normal speech and differentiate ataxic and hypokinetic speech in parkinsonian diseases and cerebellar ataxia. We screened 804 perceptual speech analyses performed in the Samsung Medical Center Neurology Department between January 2017 and December 2020. The data of patients diagnosed with parkinsonian disorders or cerebellar ataxia were included. Two speech tasks (numbering from 1 to 50 and reading nine sentences) were analyzed. We adopted convolutional neural networks and developed a patch-wise wave splitting and integrating AI system for audio classification (PWSI-AI-AC) to differentiate between ataxic and hypokinetic speech. Of the 395 speech recordings for the reading task, 76, 112, and 207 were from normal, ataxic dysarthria, and hypokinetic dysarthria subjects, respectively. Of the 409 recordings of the numbering task, 82, 111, and 216 were from normal, ataxic dysarthria, and hypokinetic dysarthria subjects, respectively. The reading and numbering task recordings were classified with 5-fold cross-validation using PWSI-AI-AC as follows: hypokinetic dysarthria vs. others (area under the curve: 0.92 ± 0.01 and 0.92 ± 0.02), ataxia vs. others (0.93 ± 0.04 and 0.89 ± 0.02), hypokinetic dysarthria vs. ataxia (0.96 ± 0.02 and 0.95 ± 0.01), hypokinetic dysarthria vs. none (0.86 ± 0.03 and 0.87 ± 0.05), and ataxia vs. none (0.87 ± 0.07 and 0.87 ± 0.09), respectively. PWSI-AI-AC showed reliable performance in differentiating ataxic and hypokinetic dysarthria and effectively augmented data to classify the types even with limited training samples. The proposed fully automatic AI system outperforms neurology residents. Our model can provide effective guidelines for screening related diseases and differential diagnosis of neurodegenerative diseases.

Abstract It is widely held that disorder is essential to the existence of a finite interval of magnetic field in which the Hall conductance is quantized, i.e., for the existence of “plateaus” in the quantum Hall effect. Here, we show that the existence of a quasi-particle Wigner crystal (QPWC) results in the persistence of plateaus of finite extent even in the limit of vanishing disorder. Several experimentally detectable features that characterize the behavior in the zero disorder limit are also explored.

Plywood is one of the important materials in LNG cargo containment systems, and, due to the characteristics of the wood, its properties vary greatly depending on the humidity conditions in the storage facility. Due to the distribution environment of plywood, there is a high probability of long-term exposure to the domestic seasonal environment. Considering an environment in which the humidity changes greatly according to the seasons in Korea and the characteristics of the wood, it is necessary to acquire data on changes in the characteristics of the plywood for accurate quality control. In this study, the moisture content of plywood was determined experimentally to reflect the seasonal environmental conditions of shipyards in Korea. A noticeable change in the thermal conductivity was confirmed experimentally.

Efforts have been made in this paper to develop the measuring device for the insulation performance of full scale NO96 LNG CCS. The facility was designed to maintain environmental conditions which are similar to operation conditions of full scale LNG CCS. In the facility, the heat sink boundary was kept cryogenic temperature by cold chamber which contains liquefied nitrogen and heat source boundary was made by external case heated by natural convection. Heat Flow Meter method (HFM) was applied to this facility, hence Heat Flux Sensors (HFS) were attached to specimen. The equivalent thermal conductivity of full scale NO96 unit box was targeted to measure and PUF of same size was used for the calibration test. Additionally, the finite element analysis was carried out to check the performance of the developed test facility and experimental results were also compared with those predicted by the numerical method. A greedy algorithm called Bayesian multiple matching pursuit (BMMP) is proposed to estimate a sparse signal vector and its support given m linear measurements. Unlike the maximum a posteriori (MAP) support detection, which was proposed by Lee to estimate the support by selecting an index with the maximum likelihood ratio of the correlation given by a normalized version of the orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP), the proposed method uses the correlation given by the matching pursuit proposed by Davies and Eldar. BMMP exploits the diversity gain to estimate the support by considering multiple support candidates, each of which is obtained by iteratively selecting an index set with a size different for each candidate. In particular, BMMP considers an extended support estimate whose maximal size is m in the process to obtain each of the support candidates. It is observed that BMMP outperforms other state-of-the-art methods and approaches the ideal limit of the signal sparsity in our simulation setting. This study aimed to establish a rapid in vitro plant regeneration method from rhizome buds of Kaempferia parviflora to obtain the valuable secondary metabolites with antioxidant and enzyme inhibition properties. The disinfection effect of silver oxide nanoparticles (AgO NPs) on rhizome and effects of plant growth regulators on shoot multiplication and subsequent rooting were investigated. Surface sterilization of rhizome buds with sodium hypochlorite was insufficient to control contamination. However, immersing rhizome buds in 100 mg L−1 AgO NPs for 60 min eliminated contamination without affecting the survival of explants. The number of shoots (12.2) produced per rhizome bud was higher in Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium containing 8 µM of 6-Benzyladenine (6-BA) and 0.5 µM of Thidiazuron (TDZ) than other treatments. The highest number of roots (24), with a mean root length of 7.8 cm and the maximum shoot length (9.8 cm), were obtained on medium MS with 2 µM of Indole-3-butyric acid (IBA). A survival rate of 98% was attained when plantlets of K. parviflora were acclimatized in a growth room. Liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) was used to determine the chemical profile of K. parviflora leaf extracts. Results showed that several biologically active flavonoids reported in rhizomes were also present in leaf tissues of both in vitro cultured and ex vitro (greenhouse-grown) plantlets of K. parviflora. We found 40 and 36 compounds in in vitro cultured and ex vitro grown leaf samples, respectively. Greenhouse leaves exhibited more potent antioxidant activities than leaves from in vitro cultures. A higher acetylcholinesterase inhibitory ability was obtained for greenhouse leaves (1.07 mg/mL). However, leaves from in vitro cultures exhibited stronger butyrylcholinesterase inhibitory abilities. These results suggest that leaves of K. parviflora, as major byproducts of black ginger cultivation, could be used as valuable alternative sources for extracting bioactive compounds.

Three materials SUS304, 9% Ni steel and Al 5083-O alloy, which are considered possible candidate for International Maritime Organization (IMO) type B Cargo Containment System, were studied. Monotonic tensile, fatigue, fatigue crack growth rate and Crack Tip Opening Displacement tests were carried out at room, intermediate low (-100 °C) and cryogenic (-163 °C) temperatures. The initial yield and tensile strengths of all materials tended to increase with decreasing temperature, whereas the change in elastic modulus was not as remarkable. The largest and smallest improvement ratio of the initial yield strengths due to a temperature reduction were observed in the SUS304 and Al 5083-O alloy, respectively. The fatigue strengths of the three materials increased with decreasing temperature. The largest increase in fatigue strength was observed in the Al 5083-O alloy, whereas the 9% Ni steel sample showed the smallest increase. In the fatigue crack growth rate test, SUS304 and Al 5083-O alloy showed a decrease in the crack propagation rate, due to decrease in temperature, but no visible improvement in da/dN was observed in the case of 9% Ni steel. In the Crack Tip Opening Displacement (CTOD) test, CTOD values were converted to critical crack length for the comparison with different thickness specimens. The critical crack length tended to decrease in the case of SUS304 and increase for the Al 5083-O alloy with decreasing temperature. In case of 9% Ni steel, change of critical crack length was not observed due to temperature decrease. In addition, the changing material properties according to the temperature of the LNG tank were analyzed according to the international code for the construction and equipment of ships carrying liquefied gases in bulk (IGC code) and the rules of classifications.

Introduction We aimed to describe patient awareness regarding fall prevention and education, perceived causes of falls, and changes in attitude after experiencing a fall through interviews with older Korean patients who experienced falls with resultant hip fractures. Materials and Methods We conducted face-to-face semi-structured in-depth interviews with 11 patients who were admitted to Kangbuk Samsung Hospital for hip fractures caused by falls and were referred to the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine for postsurgical rehabilitation between June 2022 and June 2023. The data were analyzed using the phenomenological method developed by Colaizzi. Results Before hip fracture, none of the patients had received fall prevention education or perceived its necessity; however, they recognized its necessity retrospectively. Participants described the causes of falls as carelessness, actions taken at the time of the fall, environmental factors, and decreased physical function. Most participants believed that falls could be prevented through personal caution and activity restrictions. Some mentioned fall prevention education, exercise, wearing appropriate shoes, environmental adjustments, and seeking assistance from others as methods of preventing future falls. Most patients reported adopting a safety-seeking attitude after experiencing hip fracture. Many patients had negative thoughts such as guilt or thoughts of death, whereas only a few reported increased interest in education and exercise. Conclusions We observed a lack of fall prevention education, misunderstanding regarding the cause of falls, and negative psychological changes after experiencing hip fractures due to falls in older Korean individuals. Recognizing and managing patient perceptions is crucial for effective fall prevention, requiring both healthcare provider awareness and active participation from patients and caregivers.

Abstract The purpose of study was to evaluate that kallistatin deficiency causes excessive production of reactive oxygen species and exacerbates neuronal injury after cardiac arrest. For in vitro study, kallistatin knockdown human neuronal cells were given ischemia–reperfusion injury, and the oxidative stress and apoptosis were evaluated. For clinical study, cardiac arrest survivors admitted to the ICU were divided into the good (CPC 1–2) and poor (CPC 3–5) 6-month neurological outcome groups. Malignant schwannoma is an extremely rare tumor and the risk of malignant schwannoma increases in patients with von Recklinghausen’s disease. Recently, we encountered a case of solitary malignant schwannoma in the choana and posterior nasal septum. Malignant schwannoma has not been previously reported in these locations. A 53-year-old man, who was immunologically healthy and showed no abnormal dermatological lesions, presented with a polypoid mass in the right nasal cavity and underwent endoscopic mass excision. The mass originated from the choana and the posterior portion of the right nasal septum. This mass was confirmed as a malignant schwannoma on histological examination and immunohistochemical staining. After endoscopic excision, postoperative adjuvant radiotherapy was administered, and there was no recurrence at 1 year after treatment. This case suggests that a solitary malignant schwannoma should be considered in the differential diagnosis of a mass in the posterior nasal cavity.

Objective: This study introduces a novel system that can simulate diverse mechanical properties of the human chest to enhance the experience of CPR training by reflecting realistic chest conditions of patients. Methods: The proposed system consists of Variable stiffness mechanisms (VSMs) and Variable damper (VD) utilizing stretching silicone bands and dashpot dampers with controllable valves to modulate stiffness and damping, respectively. Cyclic loading was applied with a robot manipulator to the system. Compression force and displacement were measured and analyzed to evaluate the system’s mechanical response. Long-term stability of the system was also validated. Results: A non-linear response of the human chest under compression is realized through this design. Test results indicated non-linear force-displacement curves with hysteresis, similar to those observed in the chest of patients. Controlling the VSM and VD allowed for intentional changes in the slope and area of curves that are related to stiffness and damping, respectively. Stiffness and damping of the system were computed using performance test results. The stiffness ranged from 5.34 N/mm to 13.59 N/mm and the damping ranges from 0.127 N $\cdot $ s/mm to 0.511 N $\cdot $ s/mm. These properties cover a significant portion of the reported mechanical properties of the human chests. The system demonstrated satisfactory stability even when it was subjected to maximum stiffness conditions of the long-term compression test. Conclusion: The system is capable of emulating the mechanical properties and behavior of the human chests, thereby enhancing the CPR training experience.

Abstract Despite intensive clinical and scientific efforts, the mortality rate of sepsis remains high due to the lack of precise biomarkers for patient stratification and therapeutic guidance. Secreted human tryptophanyl-tRNA synthetase 1 (WARS1), an endogenous ligand for Toll-like receptor (TLR) 2 and TLR4 against infection, activates the genes that signify the hyperinflammatory sepsis phenotype. High plasma WARS1 levels stratified the early death of critically ill patients with sepsis, along with elevated levels of cytokines, chemokines, and lactate, as well as increased numbers of absolute neutrophils and monocytes, and higher Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) scores. These symptoms were recapitulated in severely ill septic mice with hypercytokinemia. Further, injection of WARS1 into mildly septic mice worsened morbidity and mortality. We created an anti-human WARS1-neutralizing antibody that suppresses proinflammatory cytokine expression in marmosets with endotoxemia. Administration of this antibody into severe septic mice attenuated cytokine storm, organ failure, and early mortality. With antibiotics, the antibody almost completely prevented fatalities. These data imply that blood-circulating WARS1-guided anti-WARS1 therapy may provide a novel theranostic strategy for life-threatening systemic hyperinflammatory sepsis.

Abstract Importance The COVID‐19 pandemic led to reductions in primary care and cancer screening visits, which may delay detection of some cancers. The impact on incidence has not been fully quantified. We examined change in cancer incidence to determine how the COVID‐19 pandemic may have altered the characteristics of cancers diagnosed among women. Methods This study included female patients aged ≥18 years and diagnosed with breast (n = 9489), colon (n = 958), pancreatic (n = 669), or uterine (n = 1991) cancer at three hospitals in North Carolina. Using interrupted time series, we compared incidence of cancers diagnosed between March 2020 and November 2020 (during pandemic) with cancers diagnosed between January 2016 and February 2020 (pre‐pandemic). Results During the pandemic, incidence of breast and uterine cancers was significantly lower than expected compared to pre‐pandemic (breast—18%, p = 0.03; uterine −20%, p = 0.05). Proportions of advanced pathologic stage and hormone receptor‐negative breast cancers, and advanced clinical stage and large size uterine cancers were more prevalent during the pandemic. No significant changes in incidence were detected for pancreatic (−20%, p = 0.08) or colon (+14%, p = 0.30) cancers. Conclusion and Relevance In women, the COVID‐19 pandemic resulted in a significant reduction in the incidence of breast and uterine cancers, but not colon or pancreatic cancers. A change in the proportion of poor prognosis breast and uterine cancers suggests that some cancers that otherwise would have been diagnosed at an earlier stage will be detected in later years. Continued analysis of long‐term trends is needed to understand the full impact of the pandemic on cancer incidence and outcomes.

BackgroundRecently, we developed a chest compression device that can move the chest compression position without interruption during CPR and be remotely controlled to minimize rescuer exposure to infectious diseases. The purpose of this study was to compare its performance with conventional mechanical CPR device in a mannequin and a swine model of cardiac arrest.Materials and methodsA prototype of a remote-controlled automatic chest compression device (ROSCER) that can change the chest compression position without interruption during CPR was developed, and its performance was compared with LUCAS 3 in a mannequin and a swine model of cardiac arrest. In a swine model of cardiac arrest, 16 male pigs were randomly assigned into the two groups, ROSCER CPR (n = 8) and LUCAS 3 CPR (n = 8), respectively. During 5 minutes of CPR, hemodynamic parameters including aortic pressure, right atrial pressure, coronary perfusion pressure, common carotid blood flow, and end-tidal carbon dioxide partial pressure were measured.ResultsIn the compression performance test using a mannequin, compression depth, compression time, decompression time, and plateau time were almost equal between ROSCER and LUCAS 3. In a swine model of cardiac arrest, coronary perfusion pressure showed no difference between the two groups (p = 0.409). Systolic aortic pressure and carotid blood flow were higher in the LUCAS 3 group than in the ROSCER group during 5 minutes of CPR (p < 0.001, p = 0.008, respectively). End-tidal CO2 level of the ROSCER group was initially lower than that of the LUCAS 3 group, but was higher over time (p = 0.022). A Kaplan-Meier survival analysis for ROSC also showed no difference between the two groups (p = 0.46).ConclusionThe prototype of a remote-controlled automated chest compression device can move the chest compression position without interruption during CPR. In a mannequin and a swine model of cardiac arrest, the device showed no inferior performance to a conventional mechanical CPR device.

Several recent studies have investigated the use of hypofractionated radiotherapy (HFRT) for various cancers. However, HFRT for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) with or without concurrent chemotherapy is not yet widely used because of concerns about serious side effects and the lack of evidence for improved treatment results. Investigations of HFRT with concurrent chemotherapy in NSCLC have usually been performed in single-arm studies and with a small number of patients, so there are not yet sufficient data. Therefore, the Korean Society for Radiation Oncology Practice Guidelines Committee planned this review article to summarize the evidence on HFRT so far and provide it to radiation oncology clinicians. In summary, HFRT has demonstrated promising results, and the reviewed data support its feasibility and comparable efficacy for the treatment of locally advanced NSCLC. The incidence and severity of esophageal toxicity have been identified as major concerns, particularly when treating large fraction sizes. Strategies, such as esophagus-sparing techniques, image guidance, and dose constraints, may help mitigate this problem and improve treatment tolerability. Continued research and clinical trials are essential to refine treatment strategies, identify optimal patient selection criteria, and enhance therapeutic outcomes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As one of efforts to conserve a genetic resource of the endemic cobitid species in the Korean peninsula, the complete mitogenome of Cobitis hankugensis (Kim, Park, Son & Nalbant, 2003) was determined using Illumina MiSeq system. The circular mitogenome was 16,557 bp length and encoded 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), two ribosomal RNA genes, 22 tRNA genes, and a control region. Only the COX1 gene was identified with an aberrant initiation codon GTG, and an incomplete termination codon (T—/TA–) was identified in six PCGs including COX2, COX3, ND2, ND3, ND4, and Cytb genes. Phylogenetic analysis using 30 mitochondrial genomes belonging to Cobitidae, Botiidae, and Gyrinocheilidae showed that the highest identity (92.38%) with Kichulchoia brevifasciata (NC_027166). The complete mitogenome of C. hankugensis, an endemic species in Korea, will provide fundamental data on the evolutionary relationship of Cobitidae species.

Advances in radiotherapy (RT) techniques, including intensity-modulated RT and image-guided RT, have allowed hypofractionation, increasing the fraction size over the conventional dose of 1.8-2.0 Gy. Hypofractionation offers advantages such as shorter treatment times, improved compliance, and under specific conditions, particularly in tumors with a low a/ß ratio, higher efficacy. It was initially explored for use in RT for prostate cancer and adjuvant RT for breast cancer, and its application has been extended to various other malignancies. Hypofractionated RT (HFRT) may also be effective in patients who are unable to undergo conventional treatment owing to poor performance status, comorbidities, or old age. The treatment of brain tumors with HFRT is relatively common because brain stereotactic radiosurgery has been performed for over two decades. However, re-irradiation of recurrent lesions and treatment of elderly or frail patients are areas under investigation. HFRT for head and neck cancer has not been widely used because of concerns regarding late toxicity. Thus, we aimed to provide a comprehensive summary of the current evidence for HFRT for brain tumors and head and neck cancer and to offer practical recommendations to clinicians faced with the challenge of choosing new treatment options. The complete mitochondrial genome of Odontobutis platycephala collected from a native Korean river was determined by the bioinformatics assembly of the next-generation sequencing (NGS) reads. The circular mitogenome was 17,590 bp length which harbored canonical 13 protein-coding genes, 22 tRNAs, and 2 rRNAs, which was identical to those of family Odontobutidae. Twenty-eight genes were located on H strand, whereas remaining nine genes were on L strand. Except for COX1 gene (GTG), other 12 protein-coding genes were predicted typical start codons (ATG). Among the currently known mitogenome sequences, O. platycephala showed highest identity (96.98%) to Korean haplotype of O. platycephala (NC010199).

The circular mitogenome was 16,525 bp in length which harbored canonical 13 protein-coding genes, 22 tRNAs, and 2 rRNAs, which was identical to those of family Siluridae. Twenty-eight genes were located on H strand, whereas the remaining nine genes were on L strand. Except for COX1 gene (GTG), other 12 protein-coding genes were predicted typical start codons (ATG). Among the currently known mitogenome sequences, S. soldatovi showed highest identity (99.38%) to the Chinese haplotype of S. soldatovi (NC022723) followed by the Chinese haplotype of Silurus asotus (JX087351). Interestingly, intraspecies variations of S. asotus are higher than those of interspecies and further study should be made to elucidate the evolutional relationship between two Silurus species.

Purpose This study aimed to compare treatment outcomes and toxicity profile between imaged-guided brachytherapy (IGBT) versus conventional brachytherapy (CBT) performed by the same practitioner during the same time period. Materials and Methods Medical records of 104 eligible patients who underwent brachytherapy for locally advanced cervical cancer were retrospectively reviewed. Fifty patients (48.1%) underwent IGBT, and 54 (51.9%) patients underwent CBT. All patients underwent concurrent chemoradiation with cisplatin. High-dose-rate intracavitary brachytherapy with dose prescription of 25-30 Gy in 4-6 fractions was performed for all patients. Late lower gastrointestinal (GI) and urinary toxicities occurred more than 3 months after the end of brachytherapy were included for comparative and dosimetric analyses. Results The median follow-up period was 18.33 months (range, 3.25 to 38.43 months). There were no differences in oncologic outcomes between the two groups. The IGBT group had lower rate of actuarial grade ≥ 3 toxicity than the CBT group (2-year, 4.5% vs. 25.7%; p=0.030). Cumulative equieffective D2cc of sigmoid colon was significantly correlated with grade ≥ 2 lower GI toxicity (p=0.033), while equieffective D2cc of rectum (p=0.055) and bladder (p=0.069) showed marginal significance with corresponding grade ≥ 2 toxicities in the IGBT group. Half of grade ≥ 3 lower GI toxicities impacted GI tract above the rectum. Optimal thresholds of cumulative D2cc of sigmoid colon and rectum were 69.7 Gy and 70.8 Gy, respectively, for grade ≥ 2 lower GI toxicity. Conclusion IGBT showed superior toxicity profile to CBT. Evaluating the dose to the GI tract above rectum by IGBT might prevent some toxicities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: Septoturbinoplasty is frequently performed to correct nasal obstruction; however, there is still a lack of research on changes in nasal and nose-related symptoms early after septoturbinoplasty. Therefore, we aimed to investigate changes in subjective outcomes within 6 months after septoturbinoplasty. Materials and Methods: The medical records of patients who underwent septoturbinoplasty at Gangnam Severance Hospital were retrospectively analyzed. Symptom scores were evaluated using the Sino-nasal Outcome Test (SNOT-22) and obstruction scores. The SNOT-22 and obstruction scores were investigated before surgery and at 1, 3, and 6 months after surgery. Results: We noted significant decreases in both SNOT-22 and obstruction scores at 1 month after surgery, compared to those before surgery (p<0.001). However, there were no significant changes at 3 and 6 months after surgery, compared to scores at 1 month after surgery. Using multivariate logistic regression analysis, a larger difference between SNOT-22 scores preoperatively and 1 month after surgery was significantly associated with a significant improvement in symptoms at 3 or 6 months after septoturbinoplasty (p=0.029). Conclusion: These results imply that subjective outcomes and degree of improvement in the first month after septoturbinoplasty can be used as a predictor of the results thereof and for counseling patients about its progress. Purpose We aimed to investigate manifestations and patterns of care for patients with brain metastasis (BM) from breast cancer (BC) and compared their overall survival (OS) from 2005 through 2014 in Korea. Materials and Methods We retrospectively reviewed 600 BC patients with BM diagnosed between 2005 and 2014. The median follow-up duration was 12.5 months. We categorized the patients into three groups according to the year when BM was initially diagnosed (group I [2005-2008], 98 patients; group II [2009-2011], 200 patients; and group III [2012-2014], 302 patients). Results Over time, the median age at BM diagnosis increased by 2.2 years (group I, 49.0 years; group II, 48.3 years; and group III, 51.2 years; p=0.008). The percentage of patients with extracranial metastasis was 73.5%, 83.5%, and 86.4% for group I, II, and III, respectively (p=0.011). The time interval between BC and BM was prolonged in patients with stage III primary BC (median, 2.4 to 3 years; p=0.029). As an initial brain-directed treatment, whole-brain radiotherapy alone decreased from 80.0% in 2005 to 41.1% in 2014. Meanwhile, stereotactic radiosurgery or fractionated stereotactic radiotherapy alone increased from 13.3% to 34.7% during the same period (p=0.005). The median OS for group I, II, and III was 15.6, 17.9, and 15.0 months, respectively, with no statistical significance. Conclusion The manifestations of BM from BC and the pattern of care have changed from 2005 to 2014 in Korea. However, the OS has remained relatively unchanged over the 10 years. Charged-particle therapy (CPT) such as proton beam therapy (PBT) and carbon-ion radiotherapy (CIRT) exhibit substantial physical and biological advantages compared to conventional photon radiotherapy. As it can reduce the amount of radiation irradiated in the normal organ, CPT has been mainly applied to pediatric cancer and radioresistent tumors in the eloquent area. Although there is a possibility of greater benefits, high set-up cost and dearth of high level of clinical evidence hinder wide applications of CPT. This review aims to present recent clinical results of PBT and CIRT in selected diseases focusing on possible indications of CPT.
