Aerosol deposition (AD) method is a kind of additive manufacturing technology for fabricating dense films such as metals and ceramics at room temperature. It resolves the challenge of integrating ceramic films onto temperature-sensitive substrates, including metals, glasses, and polymers. It should be emphasized that the AD is a spray coating technology that uses powder without thermal assistance to generate films with high density. Compared to the traditional sputter-based approach, the AD shows several advantages in efficiency, convenience, better interfacial bonding and so on. Therefore, it opens some possibilities to the field of batteries, especially all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs) and draws much attention not only for research but also for large scale applications.The purpose of this work is to provide a critical review on the science and technology of AD as well as its applications in the field of batteries. The process, mechanism and effective parameters of AD, and recent developments in AD applications in the field of batteries will be systematically reviewed so that a trend for AD will be finally provided.

Abstract Haplo-insufficiency of the gene encoding the myelin protein PMP22 leads to focal myelin overgrowth in the peripheral nervous system and hereditary neuropathy with liability to pressure palsies (HNPP). Conversely, duplication of PMP22 causes Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 1A (CMT1A), characterized by hypomyelination of medium to large caliber axons. The molecular mechanisms of abnormal myelin growth regulation by PMP22 have remained obscure. Here, we show in rodent models of HNPP and CMT1A that the PI3K/Akt/mTOR-pathway inhibiting phosphatase PTEN is correlated in abundance with PMP22 in peripheral nerves, without evidence for direct protein interactions. Indeed, treating DRG neuron/Schwann cell co-cultures from HNPP mice with PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathway inhibitors reduced focal hypermyelination. When we treated HNPP mice in vivo with the mTOR inhibitor Rapamycin, motor functions were improved, compound muscle amplitudes were increased and pathological tomacula in sciatic nerves were reduced. In contrast, we found Schwann cell dedifferentiation in CMT1A uncoupled from PI3K/Akt/mTOR, leaving partial PTEN ablation insufficient for disease amelioration. For HNPP, the development of PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathway inhibitors may be considered as the first treatment option for pressure palsies.

The successful substitution of complex physiological fluids, such as human saliva, remains a major challenge in drug development. Although there are a large number of saliva substitutes on the market, their efficacy is often inadequate due to short residence time in the mouth, unpleasant mouthfeel, or insufficient protection of the teeth. Therefore, systems need to be identified that mimic the functions of saliva, in particular the salivary mucin MUC5B and the unique physiological properties of saliva. To this end, plant extracts known to contain hydrocolloid polysaccharides and to have mucus-forming properties were studied to evaluate their suitability as saliva substitutes. The aqueous plant extracts of Calendula officinalis, Fucus sp. thalli, and lichenan from Lichen islandicus were examined for composition using a range of techniques, including GC-MS, NMR, SEC, assessment of pH, osmolality, buffering capacity, viscoelasticity, viscoelastic interactions with human saliva, hydrocolloid network formation, and in vitro cell adhesion. For this purpose, a physiologically adapted adhesive test was developed using human buccal epithelial cells. The results show that lichenan is the most promising candidate to mimic the properties of MUC5B. By adjusting the pH, osmolality, and buffering capacity with K2HPO4, it was shown that lichenan exhibited high cell adhesion, with a maximum detachment force that was comparable to that of unstimulated whole mouth saliva.

Abstract Aiming to advance the technical maturity of CO2 electrolysis to formic acid, various gas diffusion layers (GDLs) are investigated for their suitability as carbon‐based substrate for gas diffusion electrodes (GDEs) and their effect on the electroreduction of CO2 to formate. Particular attention lies on the elucidation for the effect of the GDL thickness, hydrophobic treatment, and presence of a microporous layer (MPL) on the GDE performance in terms of Faradaic efficiency. Based on the investigation it is found that the GDL thickness has no discernible influence on the Faradaic efficiency, while a GDE with a hydrophobic treatment of 10 % PTFE outperforms a GDE based on a GDL with 30 % PTFE. Furthermore, the presence of a MPL is found to be of marked importance to achieve relevant current densities given its effect on the focus of the catalyst layer on the GDE surface after spray coating, the wetting, and the electrical conductivity.

Humans are strongly dependent upon social resources for allostasis and emotion regulation. This applies especially to early childhood because humans-as an altricial species-have a prolonged period of dependency on support and input from caregivers who typically act as sources of co-regulation. Accordingly, attachment theory proposes that the history and quality of early interactions with primary caregivers shape children's internal working models of attachment. In turn, these attachment models guide behavior, initially with the set goal of maintaining proximity to caregivers but eventually paving the way to more generalized mental representations of self and others. Mounting evidence in non-clinical populations suggests that these mental representations coincide with differential patterns of neural structure, function, and connectivity in a range of brain regions previously associated with emotional and cognitive capacities. What is currently lacking, however, is an evidence-based account of how early adverse attachment-related experiences and/or the emergence of attachment disorganization impact the developing brain. While work on early childhood adversities offers important insights, we propose that how these events become biologically embedded crucially hinges on the context of the child-caregiver attachment relationships in which the events take place. Our selective review distinguishes between direct social neuroscience research on disorganized attachment and indirect maltreatment-related research, converging on aberrant functioning in neurobiological systems subserving aversion, approach, emotion regulation, and mental state processing in the wake of severe attachment disruption. To account for heterogeneity of findings, we propose two distinct neurobiological phenotypes characterized by hyper- and hypo-arousal primarily deriving from the caregiver serving either as a threatening or as an insufficient source of co-regulation, respectively.

Summary: A robust imaging protocol utilizing laboratory XCT is presented. Hybrid 2D/3D imaging at different scales with real-time monitoring allowed to assess, in operation, the evolution of zinc electrodes within three environments, namely alkaline, near-neutral, and mildly acidic. Different combinations of currents were used to demonstrate various scenarios exhibiting both dendritic and smooth deposition of active material. Directly from radiograms, the volume of the electrode and therefore its growth/dissolution rate was estimated and compared against tomographic reconstructions and theoretical values. The protocol combines simplistic cell design with multiple three-dimensional and two-dimensional acquisitions at different magnifications, providing a unique insight into electrode’s morphology evolution within various environments.

Abstract A direct current in an electrochemical cell with a diluted liquid electrolyte leads to the displacement of ions within the solvent, while diffusion works against the resulting concentration differences. This study aims to experimentally evaluate a physicochemical ion transport model (source code provided) that describes current‐driven concentration gradients in diluted electrolytes. Hereto, an aqueous 0.1 M CuSO4 electrolyte between metallic copper electrodes serves as an experimental test system. Spatially resolved optical measurements are used to monitor the evolution of the ion concentration gradient in the electrolyte. Moreover, measured limited currents are related to computationally modeled concentration gradients. A constant parameterization of the diffusion coefficient, molar conductivity and ion transport number lead to a slight overestimation of the cathodic ion depletion and cell resistance, whereas a literature data based concentration dependent parameterization matches better to the measured data. The limited current is considered under a computational parameter variation and thereby related to the physicochemical impact of different electrolyte properties on the ion transport. This approach highlights the differences between purely diffusion limited currents and the limited current resulting from the combined electric field and diffusion driven ion motion. A qualitative schematic sketch of the physical mechanisms of the ion movement is presented to illustrate the current driven ion displacement in liquid electrolytes.

Abstract Efficiently improving the moisture stability of β‐Li3PS4 materials could significantly reduce production costs and eventually enable the mass application. Nanoporous multiphase β‐Li3PS4 materials prepared via solvent‐assistant routes usually contain solvent or solvent decomposition segments associated with the amorphous Li3PS4 phase in their structures. Herein, the solvent ethyl propionate (EP) remains in the β‐Li3PS4 even after 220 h of annealing at 220°C. The possibility of tuning the moisture stability of β‐Li3PS4 by adjusting the content of the solvent is investigated by environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) combined with other structural analysis techniques. The results demonstrated that the hydrogen‐containing amorphous Li3PS4 not only stabilizes the β‐phase at room temperature but also improves the moisture stability of the material. Although the rapid hydrolysis occurs on the surface of solvent‐containing β‐Li3PS4 materials under ambient conditions within 10 s, with 4 wt% EP content, the material can be exposed to 1.6% relative humidity (R.H.) for at least 8 h without any structural or microstructural change. Even with the lower amount of EP (1.2 wt%) in the Li3PS4 structure, the material can withstand 1% R.H. for more than 8 h, which allows the material to be manufactured in a dry room. Our observation proposes a simple method to slightly modify the moisture stability of β‐Li3PS4 to match the different manufacturing conditions.

Abstract Supporting electrolytes contain inert dissolved salts to increase the conductivity, to change microenvironments near the electrodes and to assist in electrochemical reactions. This combined experimental and computational study examines the impact of supporting salts on the ion transport and related limited currents in electrochemical cells. A physical model that describes the multi-ion transport in liquid electrolytes and the resulting concentration gradients is presented. This model and its parameterization are evaluated by the measured limited current of the copper deposition in a CuSO4 electrolyte under a gradually increasing amount of Na2SO4 that acts as a supporting salt. A computational sensibility analysis of the transport model reveals that the shared conductance between the ions lowers the limited currents with larger supporting salt concentrations. When the supporting salt supplies most of the conductance, the electric-field-driven transport of the electrochemically active ions becomes negligible so that the limited current drops to the diffusion-limited current that is described by Fick’s first law. The transition from diluted supporting electrolyte to the case of ionic liquids is elucidated with the transport model, highlighting the different physical transport mechanisms in a non-conducting (polar) and a conducting (ionic) solvent.

Abstract Pseudocapacitances such as the hydrogen adsorption on platinum (HAoPt) are associated with faradaic chemical processes that appear as capacitive in their potentiodynamic response, which was reported to result from the kinetics of adsorption processes. This study discusses an alternative interpretation of the partly capacitive response of the HAoPt that is based on the proton transport of ad- or desorbed hydrogen in the double layer. Potentiodynamic perturbations of equilibrated surface states of the HAoPt lead to typical double layer responses with the characteristic resistive–capacitive relaxations that overshadow the fast adsorption kinetics. A potential-dependent double layer representation by a dynamic transmission line model incorporates the HAoPt in terms of capacitive contributions and can computationally reconstruct the charge exchanged in full range cyclic voltammetry data. The coupling of charge transfer with double layer dynamics displays a novel physicochemical theory to explain the phenomenon of pseudocapacitance and the mechanisms in thereon based supercapacitors.

To tackle the challenge of powering distributed autonomous indoor sensors and electronics, such as in the implementation of the internet of things (IOT), a high-efficiency solar module with integrated storage is a potential solution that offers a stable, reliable power source. For this, organic photovoltaics (OPV) are a promising candidate, delivering high efficiencies under indoor lighting, flexibility, scalability and low-cost designs via roll-to-roll manufacturing. Pairing an OPV device with batteries made from widely available sodium seems to be a viable strategy for achieving a low-cost, low-power, self-charging power source. PV devices can be coupled directly to batteries without power conditioning. Self-sustained operation and stable power output of this power harvester are achievable with proper voltage matching and scaling of both the PV and battery within the target range of operating conditions. We achieved a record indoor direct charging overall efficiency of an OPV and sodium ion battery of 13.1–14.4% over a wide range of LED illumination intensities of 150–15 000 lx. It is a central tenet of attachment theory that individual differences in attachment representations organize behavior during social interactions. Secure attachment representations also facilitate behavioral synchrony, a key component of adaptive parent–child interactions. Yet, the dynamic neural processes underlying these interactions and the potential role of attachment representations remain largely unknown. A growing body of research indicates that interpersonal neural synchrony (INS) could be a potential neurobiological correlate of high interaction and relationship quality. In this study, we examined whether interpersonal neural and behavioral synchrony during parent–child interaction is associated with parent and child attachment representations. In total, 140 parents (74 mothers and 66 fathers) and their children (age 5–6 years; 60 girls and 80 boys) engaged in cooperative versus individual problem‐solving. INS in frontal and temporal regions was assessed with functional near‐infrared spectroscopy hyperscanning. Attachment representations were ascertained by means of the Adult Attachment Interview in parents and a story‐completion task in children, alongside video‐coded behavioral synchrony. Findings revealed increased INS during cooperative versus individual problem solving across all dyads (훸2(2) = 9.37, p = 0.009). Remarkably, individual differences in attachment representations were associated with INS but not behavioral synchrony (p > 0.159) during cooperation. More specifically, insecure maternal attachment representations were related to higher mother–child INS in frontal regions (훸2(3) = 9.18, p = 0.027). Conversely, secure daughter attachment representations were related to higher daughter–parent INS within temporal regions (훸2(3) = 12.58, p = 0.006). Our data thus provide further indication for INS as a promising correlate to probe the neurobiological underpinnings of attachment representations in the context of early parent–child interactions. Tenascin-C (TNC) is a complex glycoprotein of the extracellular matrix (ECM) involved in a plethora of (patho-)physiological processes, such as oncogenesis and inflammation. Since chemokines play an essential role in both disease processes, we have investigated here the binding of TNC to some of the key chemokines, namely CCL2, CCL26, CXCL8, CXCL10, and CXCL12. Thereby, a differential chemokine-TNC binding pattern was observed, with CCL26 exhibiting the highest and CCL2 the lowest affinity for TNC. Heparan sulfate (HS), another member of the ECM, proved to be a similarly high-affinity ligand of TNC, with a Kd value of 730 nM. Chemokines use glycosa-minoglycans such as HS as co-receptors to induce immune cell migration. Therefore, we assumed an influence of TNC on immune cell chemotaxis due to co-localization within the ECM. CCL26- and CCL2-induced mobilization experiments of eosinophils and monocytes, respectively, were thus performed in the presence and the absence of TNC. Pre-incubation of the immune cells with TNC resulted in a 3.5-fold increase of CCL26-induced eosinophil chemotaxis, whereas a 1.3-fold de-crease in chemotaxis was observed when monocytes were pre-incubated with CCL2. As both chemokines have similar HS binding but different TNC binding affinities, we speculate that TNC acts as an attenuator in monocyte and as an amplifier in eosinophil mobilization by impeding CCL2 from binding to HS on the one hand, and by reinforcing CCL26 to bind to HS on the other hand.

Hepatic cell death occurs in response to diverse stimuli such as chemical and physical damage. The exposure of intracellular contents such as DNA during necrosis induces a severe inflammatory response that has yet to be fully explored therapeutically. Here, we sought means to neutralize the ability of extracellular DNA to induce deleterious tissue inflammation when drug‐induced liver injury had already ensued. DNA exposure and inflammation were investigated in vivo in drug‐induced liver injury using intravital microscopy. The necrotic DNA debris was studied in murine livers in vivo and in DNA debris models in vitro by using a positively charged chemokine‐derived peptide (MIG30; CXCL9[74‐103]). Acetaminophen‐induced liver necrosis was associated with massive DNA accumulation, production of CXC chemokines, and neutrophil activation inside the injured tissue. The MIG30 peptide bound the healthy liver vasculature and, to a much greater extent, to DNA‐rich necrotic tissue. Moreover, MIG30 bound extracellular DNA directly in vivo in a charge‐dependent manner and independently of glycosaminoglycans and chemokines. Post‐treatment of mice with MIG30 reduced mortality, liver damage, and inflammation significantly. These effects were not observed with a control peptide that does not bind DNA. Mechanistically, MIG30 inhibited the interaction between DNA and histones, and promoted the dissociation of histones from necrotic debris. MIG30 also inhibited the pro‐inflammatory effect of CpG DNA, as measured by a reduction in CXCL8 production, indicating that MIG30 disturbs the ability of DNA to induce hepatic inflammation. Conclusion: The use of DNA‐binding peptides reduces necrotic liver injury and inflammation, even at late timepoints.

An innovative approach for the design of air electrodes for metal–air batteries are free-standing scaffolds made of electrospun polyacrylonitrile fibres. In this study, cobalt-decorated fibres are prepared, and the influence of carbonisation temperature on the resulting particle decoration, as well as on fibre structure and morphology is discussed. Scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry are used for characterisation. The modified fibre system is compared to a benchmark system without cobalt additives. Cobalt is known to catalyse the formation of graphite in carbonaceous materials at elevated temperatures. As a result of cobalt migration in the material the resulting overall morphology is that of turbostratic carbon. Nitrogen removal and nitrogen-type distribution are enhanced by the cobalt additives. At lower carbonisation temperatures cobalt is distributed over the surface of the fibres, whereas at high carbonisation temperatures it forms particles with diameters up to 300 nm. Free-standing, current-collector-free electrodes assembled from carbonised cobalt-decorated fibre mats display promising performance for the oxygen reduction reaction in aqueous alkaline media. High current densities at an overpotential of 100 mV and low overpotentials at current densities of 333 μA·cm−2 were found for all electrodes made from cobalt-decorated fibre mats carbonised at temperatures between 800 and 1000 °C.

SnO2 nanoparticles have frequently been reported as effective electrocatalysts for CO2 electroreduction to formate. However, in the literature, there is little knowledge of SnO2 nanoparticles that guarantee superior electrocatalytic performance. Hence, in this study, several SnO2 nanoparticles are compared with respect to their material properties, and correlations to the electrocatalytic performance are established. For comparison, three custom-made SnO2-electrocatalysts were prepared, reproducing frequently cited procedures in literature. Based on the comparison, it is found that hydrothermal, sol-gel, and solid-state synthesis provide quite different electrocatalysts, particularly in terms of the particle size and crystal lattice defect structure. Desirably small nanoparticles with a comparatively high number of lattice defects are found for the nanoparticles prepared by hydrothermal synthesis, which also provide the best electrocatalytic performance in terms of Faradaic efficiency for the electroreduction of CO2 to formate. However, despite the considerably smaller surface area, the commercial reference also provides significant electrocatalytic performance, e.g., in terms of the overall produced amount of formate, which suggests a surprisingly high surface area-specific activity for this material that is low on defects. Thus, defects do not appear to be the preferred reaction site for the CO2 electroreduction to formate on SnO2 in this case.

Bidirectional dialogue between cellular and non-cellular components of the tumor microenvironment (TME) drives cancer survival. In the extracellular space, combinations of matrix molecules and soluble mediators provide external cues that dictate the behavior of TME resident cells. Often studied in isolation, integrated cues from complex tissue microenvironments likely function more cohesively. Here, we study the interplay between the matrix molecule tenascin-C (TNC) and chemokine CCL2, both elevated in and associated with the progression of breast cancer and playing key roles in myeloid immune responses. We uncover a correlation between TNC/CCL2 tissue levels in HER2+ breast cancer and examine the physical and functional interactions of these molecules in a murine disease model with tunable TNC levels and in in vitro cellular and cell-free models. TNC supported sustained CCL2 synthesis, with chemokine binding to TNC via two distinct domains. TNC dominated the behavior of tumor-resident myeloid cells; CCL2 did not impact macrophage survival/activation whilst TNC facilitated an immune suppressive macrophage phenotype that was not dependent on or altered by CCL2 co-expression. Together, these data map new binding partners within the TME and demonstrate that whilst the matrix exerts transcriptional control over the chemokine, each plays a distinct role in subverting anti-tumoral immunity.

Social processing, namely the ability to understand others' cognitive and affective states, is crucial for successful social interaction. It encompasses socio-affective abilities such as empathy and compassion, as well as socio-cognitive abilities such as theory of mind (ToM). This study examined the link between social processing and attachment. Our study goes beyond previous research in that social processing abilities were assessed in a single, state-of-the-art behavioral paradigm using video narratives, the EmpaToM. Attachment was captured with the Adult Attachment Interview (N = 85; 50.60% women, Mage = 25.87 ± 4.50 years) measuring participants' present-day capacity to think about and communicate attachment-relevant information about the past. Additionally, a self-report attachment questionnaire was employed (N = 158). We found that AAI-based attachment security (vs. insecurity) was associated with higher behavioral ToM abilities. Furthermore, self-reported attachment avoidance was negatively correlated with behavioral compassion abilities. Our findings provide further evidence that interview-based and self-reported attachment measures do not converge, but may rather be understood as capturing different facets of attachment that relate to different components of social processing. We conclude that individuals with secure, non-avoidant attachment show social abilities that allow them to better understand others' thoughts and generate positive, caring emotions in face of others' distress. Attachment is differentially associated with distinct behavioral social processing abilities, that is, compassion and theory of mind. Higher attachment security in the Adult Attachment Interview (AAI) is linked to higher behavioral theory of mind abilities. Myelinating cells differentially myelinate axons of different diameters, however whether they can also restrict radial axonal growth remained unclear. Here, the authors show that CMTM6 in Schwann cells restricts axon diameters, affecting sensory nerve conduction and behavioral performance.

Abstract Lithium aluminum titanium phosphate (LATP) is one of the materials under consideration as an electrolyte in future all-solid-state lithium-ion batteries. In ceramic processing, the presence of secondary phases and porosity play an important role. In a presence of more than one secondary phase and pores, image analysis must tackle the difficulties about distinguishing between these microstructural features. In this study, we study the phase evolution of LATP ceramics sintered at temperatures between 950 and 1100 °C by image segmentation based on energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) elemental maps combined with quantitative analysis of LATP grains. We found aluminum phosphate (AlPO4) and another phosphate phase ((Lix)PyOz). The amount of these phases changes with sintering temperature. First, since the grains act as an aluminum source for AlPO4 formation, the aluminum content in the LATP grains decreases. Second, the amount of secondary phase changes from more (Lix)PyOz at 950 °C to mainly AlPO4 at 1100 °C sintering temperature. We also used scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) to study the evolution of the LATP grains and AlPO4, and LATP grain size increases with sintering temperature. In addition, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was used for the determination of grain boundary width and to identify the amorphous structure of AlPO4.
