Directional elastic peak electron spectroscopy (DEPES) was used to reveal a short range order within the near-surface region of Pt(111). Experiments were performed at primary electron beam energies in the range from 0.9 keV to 1.8 keV. DEPES signal was recorded for a wide range of polar θ and azimuthal ø angles and then transformed to two-dimensional DEPES maps using stereographic projection. Theoretical DEPES distributions were obtained with the application of the multiple scattering (MS) theory. In MS calculations, the following parameters were varied: the inelastic mean free path λ, the radius around the emitter Rmax and the cones of smoothing M. The comparison of experimental and theoretical DEPES maps was performed by an R-factor analysis in order to find the best correspondence between the recorded and calculated distributions. The absolute minimum of the R-factor was found at rather small values of the radius around the emitter and large inelastic mean free paths. However, the obtained minimum was very shallow and took the form of a characteristic band in the Rmax(l) plots. Thus, other Rmax and λ values corresponding to the local R-factor minimum can also be to some extent used in computations. The cone of smoothing, which reflects the spread of primary beam directions before it strikes the sample, decreases at larger electron energies which scales with better electron focusing at larger Ep values. Connections between neurons can be mapped by acquiring and analysing electron microscopic brain images. In recent years, this approach has been applied to chunks of brains to reconstruct local connectivity maps that are highly informative 1-6 , but nevertheless inadequate for understanding brain function more globally. Here we present a neuronal wiring diagram of a whole brain containing 5 × 10 7 chemical synapses 7 between 139,255 neurons reconstructed from an adult female Drosophila melanogaster 8,9 . The resource also incorporates annotations of cell classes and types, nerves, hemilineages and predictions of neurotransmitter identities 10-12 . Data products are available for download, programmatic access and interactive browsing and have been made interoperable with other fly data resources. We derive a projectome-a map of projections between regions-from the connectome and report on tracing of synaptic pathways and the analysis of information flow from inputs (sensory and ascending neurons) to outputs (motor, endocrine and descending neurons) across both hemispheres and between the central brain and the optic lobes. Tracing from a subset of photoreceptors to descending motor pathways illustrates how structure can uncover putative circuit mechanisms underlying sensorimotor behaviours. A catalogue of neuronal cell types has often been called a 'parts list' of the brain 1 , and regarded as a prerequisite for understanding brain function 2,3 . In the optic lobe of Drosophila, rules of connectivity between cell types have already proven to be essential for understanding fly vision 4,5 . Here we analyse the fly connectome to complete the list of cell types intrinsic to the optic lobe, as well as the rules governing their connectivity. Most new cell types contain 10 to 100 cells, and integrate information over medium distances in the visual field. Some existing type families (Tm, Li, and LPi) 6-10 at least double in number of types. A new serpentine medulla (Sm) interneuron family contains more types than any other. Three families of cross-neuropil types are revealed. The consistency of types is demonstrated by analysing the distances in high-dimensional feature space, and is further validated by algorithms that select small subsets of discriminative features. We use connectivity to hypothesize about the functional roles of cell types in motion, object and colour vision. Connectivity with 'boundary types' that straddle the optic lobe and central brain is also quantified. We showcase the advantages of connectomic cell typing: complete and unbiased sampling, a rich array of features based on connectivity and reduction of the connectome to a substantially simpler wiring diagram of cell types, with immediate relevance for brain function and development., (© 2024. Microparticles as a multicompartment drug delivery system are beneficial for poorly soluble drugs. Mucoadhesive polymers applied in microparticle technology prolong the contact of the drug with the mucosa surface enhancing drug bioavailability and extending drug activity. Sodium alginate (ALG) and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (hypromellose, HPMC) are polymers of a natural or semi-synthetic origin, respectively. They are characterized by mucoadhesive properties and are applied in microparticle technology. Spray drying is a technology employed in microparticle preparation, consisting of the atomization of liquid in a stream of gas. In this study, the pharmaceutical properties of spray-dried ALG/HPMC microparticles with posaconazole were compared with the properties of physical mixtures of powders with equal qualitative and quantitative compositions. Posaconazole (POS) as a relatively novel antifungal was utilized as a model poorly water-soluble drug, and hard gelatin capsules were applied as a reservoir for designed formulations. A release study in 0.1 M HCl showed significantly prolonged POS release from microparticles compared to a mixture of powders. Such a relationship was not followed in simulated vaginal fluid (SVF). Microparticles were also characterized by stronger mucoadhesive properties, an increased swelling ratio, and prolonged residence time compared to physical mixtures of powders. The obtained results indicated that the pharmaceutical properties of hard gelatin capsules filled with microparticles were significantly different from hard gelatin capsules with mixtures of powders.

The performance of exchange-correlation functional of density functional theory represented in generalized gradient approximation (GGA) and in the strongly constrained and appropriately normed (SCAN) meta-GGA scheme to study structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of greigite (Fe 3 S 4 ) was investigated. The effects of inclusion of strong electron correlations represented by on-site Hubbard correction U , and nonlocality of the long-range van der Waals (vdW) interactions were also considered. Geometry optimization yielded the inverse spinel structure and lattice parameter of greigite in good agreement with experimental data. Calculated electronic structure revealed a half-metallic nature of the greigite bands for the applied functionals except for GGA, which predicts metallic behavior. Antiferromagnetic coupling of iron ions in tetrahedral and octahedral coordinations makes the overall crystal structure ferrimagnetic. In general the GGA+ U and SCAN show comparable performance in prediction physical properties of greigite. Fungal infections are a group of diseases which are challenging to treat because of drug-resistant fungi species, drug toxicity, and often severe patient conditions. Hence, research into new treatments, including new therapeutic substances and novel drug delivery systems, is being performed. Mucoadhesive dosage forms are beneficial to improving drug bioavailability by prolonging the residence time at the site of application. Sodium alginate is a natural polymer with favorable mucoadhesive and gelling properties, although its precipitation in acidic pH significantly disrupts the process of drug release in gastric conditions. Hypromellose is a hydrophilic, semi-synthetic cellulose derivative with mucoadhesive properties, which is widely used as a control release agent in pharmaceutical technology. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of hypromellose on alginate microparticles with posaconazole, designed to modify drug release and to improve their mucoadhesive properties for both oral or vaginal application.

Alginates (ALG) have been used in biomedical and pharmaceutical technologies for decades. ALG are natural polymers occurring in brown algae and feature multiple advantages, including biocompatibility, low toxicity and mucoadhesiveness. Moreover, ALG demonstrate biological activities per se, including anti-hyperlipidemic, antimicrobial, anti-reflux, immunomodulatory or anti-inflammatory activities. ALG are characterized by gelling ability, one of the most frequently utilized properties in the drug form design. ALG have numerous applications in pharmaceutical technology that include micro- and nanoparticles, tablets, mucoadhesive dosage forms, wound dressings and films. However, there are some shortcomings, which impede the development of modified-release dosage forms or formulations with adequate mechanical strength based on pure ALG. Other natural polymers combined with ALG create great potential as drug carriers, improving limitations of ALG matrices. Therefore, in this paper, ALG blends with pectins, chitosan, gelatin, and carrageenans were critically reviewed.

Spiny lobsters have a range of complex chemical communication pathways that contribute to feeding behaviour. Feed intake is modulated by feed availability and feed characteristics, such as attractiveness and palatability, with behavioural factors, such as social competition and circadian rhythm, providing an extra layer of complexity. In this study, we investigated the effect of feed frequency on survival and growth of early-stage (instar 2-6) juvenile Palunirus ornatus . In addition, we investigated the interactive effect of feed frequency and circadian rhythm on lobster feed response. Lobsters were fed a set ration at a frequency of either one, two, four, eight, sixteen or thirty-two times per day over 49 days. The effect of feed frequency on growth and survival was determined. Circadian feeding activity under these feeding treatments was assessed by time-lapse photography. Increased feed frequency from one to sixteen feeds daily improved growth by increasing apparent feed intake (AFI) and feed attraction, as confirmed by the increased presence of lobsters in the feeding area. The rapid leaching of feed attractant, particularly free amino acid, suggests a beneficial effect of multiple feeding frequencies on feed intake and growth. However, more than sixteen feeds per day resulted in decreased feed intake and a subsequent reduction in growth. The decrease in feed intake is thought to be associated with saturation of the culture environment with attractants, resulting in a reduced behavioural response to feed supplies. This may indicate the need for depletion of attractants to retrigger a feeding response. As lobsters were grown communally, faster growth at sixteen rations per day was also coupled with increased cannibalism, likely driven by increased vulnerability with the occurrence of more frequent ecdysis events. Whereas circadian rhythm indicated more activity at night, an interaction between daytime activity and feed frequency was not observed.

Introduction: Coeliac disease (CD) is a systemic disease of inappropriate immune response to gluten, and is associated with 10% increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Here we present a case of a young patient with persistent myocardial ischaemia due to iron-deficiency anaemia despite oral iron supplementation, who was eventually diagnosed with CD., Case Report: A 36-year-old man was admitted to the cardiology department due to ST-elevation myocardial infarction of the inferior wall. Emergency coronary angiography showed occlusion of the right coronary artery and intermediate-diameter lesions in other arteries. Primary percutaneous coronary intervention with stent implantation to the right coronary artery was performed. Despite the successful intervention, the patient presented with recurrent chest pain, persistent tachycardia up to 120 beats per minute and syncope. Coronary angiography was repeated and the intermediate-diameter lesions were proved insignificant. Laboratory tests revealed microcytic anaemia with haemoglobin level of 6.5 g/dL, despite oral iron supplementation in the pre-hospital period. An emergency gastroscopy with duodenoscopy revealed flat duodenal mucosa. The duodenal biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of CD. Strict gluten-free diet and further iron supplementation were recommended. Two months later the patient presented with no recurrent chest pain and normal haemoglobin concentration., Conclusions: Diagnosis of CD with atypical presentation can be difficult. Background: In multiple sclerosis (MS), insufficient blood supply might worsen energy deficiency of the brain tissue. Thus, cerebrovascular reactivity (CVR), which is the capacity of cerebral circulation to match blood supply to metabolic demand, might be important in MS pathology., Objectives: The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship of CVR to disease activity and neuroimaging markers of disease progression in patients with MS., Material and Methods: In 43 patients with relapsing remitting MS (RRMS) in clinical remission, 30 patients with a relapse of MS and 30 healthy controls, we measured CVR with transcranial Doppler as a relative change in flow velocity after breath-holding (breath-holding index) and voluntary hyperventilation (hyperventilation index). All patients in remission underwent brain magnetic resonance imaging at baseline and 33 underwent repeated imaging after 12 months, with various brain volume measurements taken., Results: Cerebrovascular reactivity indices did not differ between patients in remission, patients with a relapse and controls. In patients in remission, CVR did not differ between those with or without contrast-enhancing lesions. In patients with a relapse, glucocorticoids significantly reduced both CVR indices. Cerebrovascular reactivity was not related to brain volume, white matter lesion volume, percent brain volume change, and the change in total white matter lesion volume., Conclusions: In RRMS, CVR appeared normal and unrelated to disease activity. There was no substantial association of CVR to brain atrophy and accumulation of white matter lesions.

The security of water delivery of the required quality by water supply networks is identified with the concept of reliability. Therefore, a method of reliability evaluation of water distribution of the required quality was developed. The method is based on the probabilistic character of secondary water contamination in the water supply network. Data for the method are taken from monitoring of the water distribution system. The method takes into consideration the number and locations of individual measurement points and the results of the tests of water quality indicators at these points. The sets of measurement points and water quality indicators constitute a matrix research (observation) field in the model. The proposed method was implemented to assess the reliability of a water distribution process with respect to water with the required microbiological quality indicators in a real distribution system.

This randomized controlled trial was designed to determine if art therapy in conjunction with Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) was more effective for reducing symptoms of combat posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) than CPT alone. Veterans ( N = 11) were randomized to receive either individual CPT, or individual CPT in conjunction with individual art therapy. PTSD Checklist-Military Version and Beck Depression Inventory-II scores improved with treatment in both groups with no significant difference in improvement between the experimental and control groups. Art therapy in conjunction with CPT was found to improve trauma processing and veterans considered it to be an important part of their treatment as it provided healthy distancing, enhanced trauma recall, and increased access to emotions.
