As freshwater becomes increasingly scarce, many industrial and municipal water utilities look at premise-scale water treatment and reuse to meet water demand. Closed-circuit reverse osmosis (CCRO) has been proposed as a promising process design to do so. This sequencing batch process enables operation at higher brine salinity levels by means of a recycle flow. Optimal operation requires that the maximum salinity level at the membrane surface represents an optimal trade-off between brine disposal costs and energy efficiency. This maximum salinity level may change over time as the feed water composition changes and electricity markets fluctuate. In this article, we present the results of the experimental evaluation of an automatic technique for continuous online optimization, known as extremum seeking control. This technique has a long history in the process control community but has received little traction so far in the water industry. We modify this technique to enable its use for online optimization of CCRO, specifically to account for its sequential batch operation. We challenge the optimization schemes through several experimental tests and illustrate the advantages and drawbacks of extremum-seeking control.

Proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controllers in water resource recovery facilities (WRRFs) feedback control loops are commonplace. While simple to implement, such control loops are rarely tuned optimally or systematically. Heuristic tuning approaches are commonly applied with varying degrees of success using trial-and-error, ad hoc tuning rules, or duplication of tuning values from a similar system. However, there are effective methods, such as lambda tuning, produce acceptable tuning with limited effort. These are based on the step-response method, where a manual process perturbation is used to define the relationship between the manipulated and controlled variables. Based on such an experiment, a simple process model is constructed and used to determine the controller tuning values. In this work, we used the step-response method and lambda tuning for two control systems in full-scale WRRFs. This led to responsive and stable behavior of the controlled system as defined by the absolute average error of the controlled variable to setpoint and standard deviation of the manipulated variable. Tuning of feedback control loops can be completed successfully through a systematic approach, and this work suggests that tuning tools, like lambda, should be part of all wastewater treatment control engineers' toolbox. HIGHLIGHTS The step-response method can be used to determine a first-order plus deadtime model of a given water resource recovery facility (WRRF) control loop.; Lambda tuning with parameters determined from a step-response test and the adjustable-λ factor can produce a well-tuned control loop as quantified by given performance metrics for both fast and slow controllers.; Step-response tuning is an efficient method for tuning multiple parallel and cascaded PI control loops in a WRRF.;

RESUMENLos metadatos hacen referencia a información descriptiva (como ubicación del sensor, unidad de medida, rango de medida, fecha de calibración, fecha de limpieza, si ocurrió algún evento como episodio de lluvia/fallo operativo/vertido tóxico …) que es esencial para convertir los grandes volúmenes de datos que se recogen actualmente en las instalaciones de tratamiento de agua y que están sin procesar en información y recursos útiles. Con el avance de la digitalización en el sector del agua, es fundamental evitar los cementerios de datos y, por otro lado, utilizar los datos almacenados para resolver problemas actuales y futuros. Este artículo se centra en el papel crucial que tienen los metadatos para responder a desafíos futuros y posiblemente impredecibles. El objetivo de este documento es presentar el ‘reto de los metadatos’ y destacar la necesidad de tener en cuenta los metadatos cuando se recoge información como parte de las buenas prácticas de digitalización.

Sensing nitrite in-situ in wastewater treatment processes could greatly simplify process control, especially during treatment of high-strength nitrogen wastewaters such as digester supernatant or, as in our case, urine. The two technologies available today, i.e. an on-line nitrite analyzer and a spectrophotometric sensor, have strong limitations such as sample preparation, cost of ownership and strong interferences. A promising alternative is the amperometric measurement of nitrite, which we assessed in this study. We investigated the sensor in a urine nitrification reactor and in ex-situ experiments. Based on theoretical calculations as well as a practical approach, we determined that the critical nitrite concentrations for nitrite oxidizing bacteria lie between 12 and 30 mgN/L at pH 6 to 6.8. Consequently, we decided that the sensor should be able to reliably measure concentrations up to 50 mgN/L, which is about double the value of the critical nitrite concentration. We found that the influences of various ambient conditions, such as temperature, pH, electric conductivity and aeration rate, in the ranges expected in urine nitrification systems, are negligible. For low nitrite concentrations, as expected in municipal wastewater treatment, the tested amperometric nitrite sensor was not sufficiently sensitive. Nevertheless, the sensor delivered reliable measurements for nitrite concentrations of 5–50 mgN/L or higher. This means that the amperometric nitrite sensor allows detection of critical nitrite concentrations without difficulty in high-strength nitrogen conversion processes, such as the nitrification of human urine.

Wastewater treatment systems have, over the past decades, been subjects for optimization and control research. One of the most intricate problems faced is that direct measurements of the variables of interest are seldom available. A large part of research has therefore been aimed at the extraction of suitable information from indirect measurements such as dissolved oxygen, pH, and oxidation reduction potential (ORP). Even if relatively complex tools, such as neural networks and fuzzy logic, have been used to conceive control laws, advantage is seldom taken of such tools with respect to development of the actual control algorithm. In this paper, a simple yet effective tool is presented that allows the detection of a desired process state by means of the Hotelling’s T2statistic. The detection tool is generic in nature and is thereby applicable to any process where a certain desired state is to be detected by means of measured variables reflecting the targeted state. Its advantages over formerly proposed control strategies are discussed, and the precautions that were taken to render its application robust are presented. It is shown by means of a laboratory-scale sequencing batch reactor (SBR) setup for nutrient removal from wastewater that the proposed controller allows one to detect the targeted endogenous state and that its application leads to effective optimization of the overall system performance. More specifically, the length of the optimized phase is reduced by 41% of its original default length and a reduction of 5% is estimated for the expected energy consumption by the aeration system. In addition, effluent concentrations of total nitrogen and nitrate nitrogen are estimated to be lower by 30 and 25%, respectively.
