The article addresses the issue of Ukrainian war refugees in Poland. The authors aim to reconstruct the role that various places play in the everyday life of refugees in Poland and the differences between recognized places. In this way, the authors try to answer the question about the meaning of place in life as refugee persons during the first weeks and the following months of their stay in host country. The research used a mixed method approach: general questionnaire survey and in-depth interviews. The particular findings of the study are related to the observations that: a) the spaces/places in the first days and weeks of war refugees' stay in the host country are completely generic, b) during their stay in the following months, refugees look for places to redefine their situation. The main conclusion of the research is that places have a very great, perhaps underestimated, importance during the stay of war refugees in the host country. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents a discussion on the anatomy of place-making within the framework of the communication processes against the background of social order in a post-socialist city. The main aim of the text is to look at the social mechanisms of place-making processes “under the microscope”. The place-making activities are very often associated with planning and urban design. However, behind that planning veil is the social world of urban neighbourhood communities. In the article we propose, the social communication and participation processes are among the key factors responsible for creating urban spaces. We are presenting a place-making case study, using the example of Asnyk Square in Poznań. In this context, we are analysing social attitudes and social communication, which took place in the course of the place-making processes and influenced urban planning activities. The discussed case is complicated and provides no easy solutions.

This study explores specific relationships between humans and nature and seeks an extended ‘social construction of nature’ in the direction of place agency. The research assumes that place can be in agented action and a reciprocal relationship with human and non-human beings. The study’s main aim is to identify whether, from the perspective of contemporary city users, a partnership with the biotic and geographical environment is possible both within and outside the city. From this aim arises a research question: Does an inhabitant of a large city realize the possibility of a dialogue involving an ‘exchange of meanings’ between two entities of interaction that are often highly different (human and non-human beings)? The research uses a questionnaire survey (to recognize general quantitative opinion) and in-depth interviews with selected respondents (to look for deeper explanations). Results show that some urban respondents can see some environmental elements (in and out of the city) as agents and can describe the relationship human-environment in case of a reciprocal action called dialogue. The application of GIS and GPS methods together with qualitative sociological methods is one of the current fields of discussion in studies of human behaviour in space. The authors ask about the justification, manner and value of using the ‘triad’: quantitative GIS measurement methods – qualitative sociological methods – quasi-experiment. A mixed-method approach in an analysis of human movement patterns is introduced. Also, the role of the investigator in such projects is discussed.

This paper argues for attention to place dialogue, rethinking how place meanings emerge through interactions between human agency and the nonhuman agency of place. To speak is to act, so what is in play here is acknowledging place not only as a 'speaker' and a 'listener' but also as an agent. In addition to developing posthumanist geographies, the article proposes a new direction for geographical studies of communication, building on the semiotic theory of C.S. Peirce and closely related research in philosophical pragmatism. Communication geography research on place‐in‐communication (representations) and communication‐in‐place (infrastructures) should be complemented by a third approach that recognises place as an interlocutor intervening in meaningful ways with human and nonhuman inhabitants' lives. In calling for this sort of recognition of place dialogue, we trace an ontological shift already prescribed by Indigenous geography, assemblage theory, philosophical pragmatism and posthumanism. The body of the article offers glimpses of three place dialogues: a research meeting taking place in an outdoor seating area of a bakery/cafe, a short viral video featuring a resourceful rat living in the New York subway, and a trip to a nature preserve to climb a mountain. The study addresses two current issues in social geography: the modern reflection on the topic of agency and the possibility of introducing the notion of place agency. When discussing human-environment relations, geographers more often use the terms more-than-human or non-human beings and focus on the animal and plant worlds. However, the symmetrical or mutual relationship between humans and the natural environment can be linked to a question arises about the wider scope of the notion of place agency and understanding the phenomenon of place as an entity acting on its own rights. The specific objective of the paper is to discuss the mutual relations between tourism and sport and, in a wider context, to draw the reader's attention to the potentially excessive range of research goals in tourism as a discipline. Within the scope of discussion, the author looks at tourism as a social activity and a conceptual and research subject. Research questions, the signposts of intellectual debate, come down to whether tourism shares any common areas with sport (in its widest sense). If so, is such activity still tourism activity? Or perhaps these types of 'sport-tourist' activities should be excluded from discussion on tourism as an academic discipline because of their non-tourist character? The author assumes that there is an exploratory and cognitive zone between these two areas of social activity, going beyond both tourism and sport. This article fits into the category of a conceptual-discursive article. Its aim is to discuss the application of 'mixed methods' in research concerning tourist behaviours, especially in the city. The article consists of a part presenting a set of methods used to study such behaviours and a part discussing the results concerning the application of a proposed research procedure algorithm. The authors take a behavioural approach and propose using a quasi-experimental method combined with techniques of mobility monitoring (GPS), and the qualitative methods used in sociological research. The article presents a discussion concerning 'mixed methods', discusses a proposed algorithm of research procedure and presents conclusions following the joint application of these methods.
