Low temperature (~35 K) measurements of the scintillation kinetics of [Y.sub.2]Si[O.sub.5] : Ce (YSO:Ce) have previously illustrated that shallow electron traps can play an important role in the scintillation mechanism. In addition, divalent calcium co-doping of isostructural [Lu.sub.2]Si[O.sub.5] : Ce (LSO:Ce) has been shown to eliminate shallow electron traps and decrease scintillation decay time while maintaining high light output. Here we investigate the effect of [Ca.sup.2+] codoping on the trap populations and scintillation kinetics of YSO:Ce. Single crystals were grown with [Ca.sup.2+] concentrations up to 0.5 at % relative to Y. Thermoluminescence measurements indicate a significant reduction in shallow traps, and a marked change in the scintillation kinetics can be seen in the scintillation time profiles as a result of [Ca.sup.2+] codoping. The effects of composition on the phase formation of multicomponent garnet crystals grown via directional solidification by the micro-pulling-down method are studied. A relatively wide range of rare-earth (RE) average ionic radii (AIR) is explored by formulating ten compositions from the system (Lu,Y,Ho,Dy,Tb,Gd)3Al5O12. Crystals were grown at either 0.05 or 0.20 mm min-1. The hypothesis is that multicomponent compounds with large AIR will form secondary phases as the single-RE aluminum garnets formed by larger Tb3+ or Gd3+; this will result in crystals of poor optical quality. Crystals with large AIR have a central opaque region in optical microscopy images, which is responsible for their reduced transparency compared to crystals with small AIR. Slow pulling rates suppress the formation of the opaque region in crystals with intermediate AIR. Powder and single-crystal X-ray diffraction and electron probe microanalysis results indicate that the opaque region is a perovskite phase. Scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy measurements reveal eutectic inclusions at the outer surface of the crystals. Single crystals of Eu2+-activated SrI2, one of the most leading-edge scintillators for gamma-ray spectroscopy applications, have a low radioactive background, excellent energy resolution of 2.6%–3% at 662 keV, and high light yield of 80 000–120 000 photons/MeV. In this article, tetravalent ions codoping, namely, Hf4+ codoping, was used to enhance its scintillation performance. $\emptyset 12$ mm diameter SrI2:Eu2+ single crystals codoped with 0, 0.05, 0.1, and 0.2 at% Hf4+ were successfully grown by the multiampoule Bridgman method. All grown crystals are highly transparent, crack-free, and inclusion-free. The effects of Hf4+ codoping concentration on the optical and scintillation properties were studied. The gamma-ray energy resolutions of SrI2:Eu single crystals can be improved from 3.4% to 3.1% at 662 keV, and from 6.6% to 6.0% at 122 keV upon 0.05 at% Hf4+ codoping. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Phase formation in multicomponent rare‐earth oxides is determined by a combination of composition, sintering atmosphere, and cooling rate. Polycrystalline ceramics comprising various combinations of Ce, Gd, La, Nd, Pr, Sm, and Y oxides in equiatomic proportions were synthesized using solid‐state sintering. The effects of composition, sintering atmosphere, and cooling rate on phase formation were investigated. Single cubic or monoclinic structures were obtained with a slow cooling of 3.3°C/min, confirming that rare‐earth oxides follow a different structure stabilization process than transition metal high‐entropy oxides. In an oxidizing atmosphere, both Ce and Pr induce a cubic structure, while only Ce plays that role in an inert or reducing atmosphere. Samples without Ce or Pr develop a single monoclinic structure. The structures formed at initial synthesis may be converted to a different one, when the ceramics are annealed in an additional atmosphere. Phase evolution of a five‐cation composition was also studied as a function of sintering temperature. In this study, we demonstrated a drastic improvement in energy resolution of (Lu0.75Y0.25)3Al5O12:Pr (LuYAG) single crystal scintillators from 4.8% to 4.1% at 662 keV upon Li+ codoping, which is the best value ever reported in the class of oxide single crystal scintillators. Li+ codoping can also significantly enhance its scintillation yield from 16 000 to 25 000 photons MeV−1, but slightly prolong the scintillation decay time. As Li+ codoping was found to have a negligible effect on the light yield non‐proportionality, we attributed the significant improvement in energy resolution to the reduced statistical variance in the number of photoelectrons produced in the photomultiplier tube (Rstat). Organic–inorganic and all-inorganic halide perovskites have become leading candidates toward high-performance optoelectronic devices and radiation detectors. In this work, we report novel zero-dimensional Cs4EuX6 (X = Br, I) perovskite single crystals as self-activated scintillators with superior performance for gamma-ray spectroscopy. Both Cs4EuBr6 and Cs4EuI6 single crystals grown by the Bridgman method were determined to have the trigonal crystal structure with the R3̅c space group, and have a melting point of approximately 540 °C. Cs4EuBr6 and Cs4EuI6 exhibit blue emission under UV excitation and high light yields of 78 000 ± 4000 photons per MeV and 53 000 ± 3000 photons per MeV under 137Cs gamma-ray irradiation, respectively. In particular, the former represents the best result achieved for self-activated scintillators thus far. Thermally stimulated luminescence studies and density functional theory calculations elucidate the correlation between halogen vacancies and long-lived emission (afterglow) at room temperature in Cs4EuX6 (X = Br, I) single crystals. Our findings not only demonstrate the high gamma-ray detection efficiency in Cs4EuX6 (X = Br, I), but will further promote the development of 0D metal halide-based novel luminescent and radiation detection materials. Cerium-doped YAlO3:Ce (YAP:Ce) is an interesting oxide scintillator that exhibits a wider range of light yield nonproportionality on a sample-to-sample basis than most other well-known oxide scintillators. In general, most oxide materials, such as Bi4Ge3O12 and Lu2SiO5:Ce, are thought to have an intrinsic proportional response that is nearly constant between samples and independent of growth conditions. Since light yield nonproportionality is responsible for degrading the achievable energy resolution of all known scintillators, it is important to understand what contributes to the behavior. In an attempt to understand if the phenomenon can be affected by growth parameters or by other means, seven samples of YAP:Ce were collected from various sources, and eight samples were grown in-house using the Czochralski method. Based on optical and scintillation measurement as well as direct measurement of the cerium concentration, it was determined that the light yield proportionality in YAP:Ce is strongly related to the cerium concentration. Samples that were found to have higher relative cerium concentration displayed a more proportional light yield response. In addition, it was determined that samples with higher cerium concentration also exhibit a faster decay time and an enhanced energy resolution when compared to samples with less cerium. Time‐resolved spectroscopic study of the photoluminescence response to femtosecond pulse excitation and free carrier absorption at different wavelengths, thermally stimulated luminescence measurements and investigation of differential absorption are applied to amend the available data on excitation transfer in GAGG:Ce scintillators, and an electronic energy‐level diagram in this single crystal is suggested to explain the influence of codoping with divalent Mg on luminescence kinetics and light yield. The conclusions are generalized by comparison of the influence of aliovalent doping in garnets (GAGG:Ce) and oxyorthosilicates (LSO:Ce and YSO:Ce). In both cases, the codoping facilitates the energy transfer to radiative Ce3+ centers, while the light yield is increased in the LYSO:Ce system but reduced in GAGG:Ce. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Codoping is an effective approach for precise control of point defects in many advanced materials, and can be used to optimize their function. This paper reports an effort toward tailoring the scintillation properties of metal halides through defect engineering. A study of aliovalent codoping of the KCaI3:Eu2+ single‐crystalline scintillators is performed, through which it is discovered that a simultaneous suppression of X‐ray induced afterglow and improvement of gamma‐ray energy resolution can be successfully achieved via Zr4+ codoping. The afterglow level is reduced by more than twofold with Zr4+ codoping. The energy resolution of a 5 mm cubic KCaI3:Eu2+ sample is improved from 3.25 to 2.7% at 662 keV, and 6.5 to 5.73% at 122 keV upon Zr4+ codoping. Physical explanations for the improvements are revealed from our investigations into both the electronic structure and thermodynamics of the defects by using thermoluminescence techniques and density functional theory calculations. The codoped Zr4+ ions prefer to form interstitials acting as shallow electron traps. The {ZrCa+VCa} complex can co‐exist with Zri interstitials as shallow hole traps under certain condition, which are able to trap holes temporarily. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A quaternary iodide KCa0.8Sr0.2I3:Eu2+ scintillator with 2.5% energy resolution at 662 keV in a 5 mm3 sample shows great potential for use in gamma-ray spectroscopy applications. In this work, we report the state-of-the-art growth of high quality 25, 38, and 50 mm diameter KCa0.8Sr0.2I3:Eu2+ single crystals by the vertical self-seeding Bridgman method. KCa0.8Sr0.2I3:Eu2+ with a size of ∅25 mm × 25 mm can achieve excellent energy resolutions of 3.15% at 662 keV and 6.8% at 122 keV irradiation, which are superior to that of a commercial NaI:Tl+ of the same size. The nonuniformity of light collection and production in ∅25 mm × 25 mm and ∅38 mm × 38 mm KCa0.8Sr0.2I3:Eu2+ crystals was evaluated by using a technique based on a collimated 137Cs source and coupling the crystal to a photomultiplier tube (PMT) in different directions. Ternary halide scintillators are commonly prepared from a mixture of commercially available binary halides. The initial binary halides may contain excess halogen ions or have different volatilities, which could lead to loss of stoichiometry of the resulting ternary halide crystals and potentially negatively affect optical and scintillation properties. In this work, the effects of vacuum aging of the melt (melt aging) and use of off-stoichiometric melts via introduction of excess CsI on the crystal quality and scintillation properties of CsSrI3:Eu2+, a promising scintillator for gamma-ray detection applications, are investigated. The phase purity of the grown samples was confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimeter measurements, and the existence of matrix composition variations is revealed by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analyses. An abnormal relationship between the full energy peak and the shaping time, i.e. full energy peak broadening or existence of two full energy peaks, in the melt-aged and off-stoichiometric samples is observed. It is ascribed to a slow scintillation decay event in a time scale between 15 and 50 μs. For the CsSrI3:Eu2+ single crystal grown from a stoichiometric melt without melt aging treatment, an energy resolution of 5.0% at 662 keV and a light yield of 48 000 ± 2000 photons per MeV can be achieved at a size of 1.4 cm3. GGAG:Ce crystals with various Ca concentrations were grown by the Czochralski technique. The introduction of Ca2+ ions into a trivalent site results in a change in the Ce valence state as well as an additional F+ luminescence center. The changes of Ce valence state could be affected by various annealing atmospheres and were investigated via measuring the Ce3+ absorbance and observing the color change of the sample. Photoluminescence spectra and photoluminescence decay were used to reveal the occurrence of F+ center related to the oxygen vacancies during the annealing. A redox mechanism and a charge compensation process are proposed to explain the change in Ce state charge and F+ center during the annealing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Single crystals of Gd_3Ga_3A l_2O12:Ce with Ca, B and Ba codopants were successfully grown using the Czochralski technique. The samples of each composition were irradiated to 10 kGy and 100 kGy gamma dose to determine the radiation induced absorption. The Ca co-doped crystal was found to have maximum induced absorption, while B and Ba co-doped were found to be more radiation hard. The reduction in transmission could be partially restored at room temperature without any annealing treatment of the crystals. The additional absorption was also measured after annealing the crystals in reducing environment and compared with the radiation induced absorption. Thermoluminescence measurements were carried out to explain the defect structure and recovery of the transmission reduction at room temperature. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

In this paper, nine different samples of \ YAIO3:{\ {Ce}} have been collected and analyzed. The light yield non-proportionality of each sample was measured and used to classify each sample as proportional or non-proportional. A variety of scintillation and optical measurements were conducted on each sample, and the proportional samples were generally found to have a higher light output and better energy resolution. In addition, a strong linear correlation was found between scintillation decay time and the degree of non-proportionality. Based on absorption measurements as well as radioluminescence data, it was determined that the non-proportional samples all shared a range of increased absorption near the cerium 5d absorption edge between about 325 and 400 nm. The increased absorption has been reported in literature, and it is believed to be the result of a material defect introduced during growth. Thermoluminescence glow curves were measured for two representative \ YAIO3:{\ {Ce}} samples, one from each proportionality grouping, and it was determined that there was an observable change in defect structure, but there were no additional traps visible in the glow curves of either the proportional or non-proportional samples. However, the intensity of the 105 K thermoluminescence peak was found to be approximately a factor of two greater in the non-proportional samples. Since the lifetime of this peak is known to be between 25 and 81 ns, it was determined to be the likely cause of the slower decay in the non-proportional samples. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
